All Good With Aaron Wood: 100 Things I've Learned About A Decade Of Smackdown
By Aaron Wood
Sep 13, 2009 - 3:18 PM
So, I got the
Smackdown 10th Anniversary DVD
WAY early, and now that I
have finally found the time to watch it all, it's safe to say there's a lot to
learn about Smackdown and the last 10 years.
Around about 100 things actually.
Funny that...
100: Candice Michelle can't talk like a
human...or sing like one either. Also,
the spinning WWE Title is shinier than I remembered. Oh, and Todd Grisham is a legend.
99: Eric Bischoff is one lucky son of a
bitch. Stephanie makes for one hot
witch. And Todd Grisham is a
legend.
98: Funny how Big Show & Lesnar will be at
the start and end of the countdown, huh?
At least they got their moments the right way round.
97: If this was a tradition because of Smackdown
airing on Thursday, it didn't move to Friday quick enough. That said, Kenzo Suzuki was funny. Plus, I wonder how much food that wasted
could have fed orphans...
96: Almost exactly 4 years later, I'm still not
sure how a "copy" of The Undertaker in a casket was supposed to help
Orton beat the Deadman...
95: Mattitude is considered sacred in
Japan. And I have to admit, it wasn't
until the gimmick was long over that I got the double entendre of
MF'er.
94: I miss Big Show with hair. That said, I miss a bunch of people's hair
now that they are bald. And Todd
Grisham is a legend.
93: It's such a shame that the
"Dominic" angle was Eddie's last really major one. That said, they were great
matches.
92: Aside from anything else, you should
probably add "Mr. America" to the reasons to combat terrorism. That way, there's no need to crappy
Patriotic gimmicks like that.
91: The best thing that guitar ever did was go
over Vince's head. And Todd Grisham
is a legend.
90: That skit with those signs has to be one of
the funniest moments ever on Smackdown.
But did that shirt really start the "You Suck" chant? Me no thinky so.
89: No challenger for the IC Title should ever
show off their painted fingernails...
Not that I'm against women fighting for it in principle, but not in
painted fingernails.
88: This injury for Bob Holly was
unfortunate. Can't say the same for the
one Lesnar gave him. It was a nasty
one.
87: Being dragged behind a bus like that would
be awesome, I'm betting.
86: Is there anyone Matt Striker can't
impersonate? And no-one can do a spin sell for a clothesline like
Rikishi.
85: Won the US Title on his first night in the
WWE. He won the IC Title on his first
night on RAW. You'd think Carlito be a
bigger name by now...
84: The Miz loved the potty humour. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
83: If for nothing else, we can thank Boogeyman
for ending the dumb "growth" gimmick of Jillian's... And isn't it funny how me bit the thing off
her face, and it just so happened not to leave any sort of wound. You'd think it was some sort of thing stuck
on by make-up...
82: Man, I remember that ovation today. Never thought it'd friggin' end. Shame he didn't really draw from that point
on...
81: And to think, when that actually happened, I
had no idea what was going on as I never knew ECW existed. Hell, since I wasn't able to see it at the
time, I barely knew RAW existed outside of Livewire and Sunday Heat!
80: While I don't doubt the New Age Outlaws were
strangers to a bar, I don't think they meant a normal bar, if you get
me...
79: Man, that original Smackdown set was
cheap...
78: And people think that HHH dominates TV
today. 5 matches on one show... Also, the Drowning Pool version of "The
Game" is awesome.
77: Man, never mind Eric Young being an entirely
rinky-dink Chris Jericho, Borash & Foley's "Tweet & Tweak
Connection" is an even more rinky-dink Rock & Sock
Connection.
76: In reference to earlier, Hogan's Undisputed
Title run was a bum's rush...
75: Stone Cold really enjoyed throwing things
off of bridges, didn't he?
What?
74: Kurt Angle actually never had much luck with
his possessions, did he?
73: Was Al Wilson ever alive? He didn't seem to be... Also, when you think about it, Paul Heyman
was a genius, but it is a long story...
72: Vince can cut a promo.
71: Head Cheese were awesome... And Todd Grisham is a legend.
70: Less than a year after this match, 37.5 % of
it isn't in the WWE anymore. Also, has
it been almost a year on MyNetworkTV already?
69: Here's a profile for a future TNA wrestler...
68: They may be exaggerating how far Foley gets
thrown, but that was a helluva bump.
That said, Striker's 20/30 feet is a HELLUVA LOT closer to Lawler's
50...
67: I'd like to be pinned by Stephanie
McMahon. And Stephanie’s face is
awesome. And Todd Grisham is a
legend.
66: Even on his debut, you could see Orton had
it.
65: Of all the titles he's won, they highlight
him winning the EUROPEAN Title??? That
said, Angle's reaction was great.
Santino Marella should really be European Champion now. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
64: Man, if you think that Rey's World Title win
was a cash-in on Eddie's death, try his tag title win with Batista! Also, why not point out how Batista f**ked
Melina before the match? This DVD is a
15-rated piece after all...
63: Michael Cole still doesn't see the funny
side of getting dry-humped.
62: A handicap tables match that the side with
the numbers advantage won? Man, this
match really was 9 years ago...
61: How ghetto was that nWo sign painted on the
back of Vince's chair?
60: The Parking Lot Brawl looked better than I
remembered it...
59: I had totally forgotten that Crash Holly was
an MF'er. Also, Matt despises traffic.
58: Impersonating Hulk Hogan is so
hacky.
57: Torrie Wilson never looked sexier than when
Big Show was flipping her car. And no,
that's not a euphemism...
56: It was always great to see Stacy Keibler in
the Miss. Hancock attire...
55: Smackdown must be taped on a Tuesday, since
Cole said "On RAW last night".
Also RVD was terrible at taking the Stunner.
54: Edge & Vickie were the sweetest couple
ever. And Todd Grisham is a
legend.
53: Road Dogg in a bear trap was
funny.
52: At least Debra looked hot for one day in her
life...
51: Someone found the "WWE Originals"
CD. Damn that album sucked the meat
missile.
50: You CAN represent the "Smackdown
Six" era without featuring Benoit.
49: There is a worse duet out there with The
Rock and a hip-hop star than the one with Wyclef Jean.
48: After yesterday's news, this one seems
rather ironic...
47: Of all the segments they have on the DVD set,
this is the one they show in full, and not in clip form? That said, I never saw Bischoff coming until
the last moment. And did someone just
say THREE MINUTES~?~?~?
46: God bless Eddie Guerrero.
45: Mick Foley was an awesome commissioner. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
44: I wonder if Jeff smacks Karen around with a
guitar like he did Moolah... And Todd
Grisham is a legend. Not that he was
particularly funny here, but I may as well keep up the running joke. That said, what's with the Moolah burying by
everyone?
43: If you are standing on top of a cage, and
have the chance to leave, do that and don't dive back in. You will always lose. Also, I always thought El Gran Luchadore was
Paul London...
42: We need Rey (or Evan Bourne) getting thrown
into the audience again one of these days...
41: Our very own Mike Rickard will like this
segment the most. Chances are he'll
need some alone time to think about what he sees here. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
40: See...Undertaker HAS tapped out. Sure, it ended up as a draw, so he hasn't
lost by tapout, but there has at least been one...
39: And to think, the woman taking a slap from
her daughter in the middle of a wrestling ring may one day be Senator
McMahon. And Todd Grisham is a
legend.
38: Eddie's title celebration was better than
Jeff's.
37: Big Show can kill a MF'er. And I don't mean a Mattitude
Follower...
36: My version of Sexy Boy was better with The
Liz playing Sherri. Shame Bulldog
didn't have the nuts to follow-through with his "Bulldog Idol" idea
knowing my greatness would shine through...
35: If you're determined to no longer team with
someone, it's maybe not the best idea to win the tag titles on your last night
together. Also, once upon a time, The
Rock and Mick Foley needed Bob & Crash Holly's help to win
matches...
34: Matt Striker was the original 24/7 Hardcore
Champion. Not just that, but the
Crash/Headbangers Fun Time USA match is funnier with comedy music...
33: I hope the future Edge/Chris Jericho feud
has matches this good. And Rey was
helluva busy on his debut...
32: Vicki Guerrero in what is a 69
position. I wouldn't be disagreeable...
31: Linda is one f**king team player for giving
that the OK...
30: It's INCREDIBLY odd seeing John Cena come
out without either My Time Is Now, or Basic Thuganomics. Oh, and spiky hair. Oh, and given that a lot of people compare
him to the old Sting, it's ironic he did a Stinger Splash within a minute of
his debut...
29: This was probably the last time Hogan put
someone over properly. That said, I
believe he was planning on getting his win back until he ended up leaving.
28: Don't ask Big Show to do a Scottish
accent. Not unless you really want an
Irish one with a touch of Pakistani.
27: If nothing else, Mark Henry probably has a
future career as a Barry White tribute act.
26: You heard it here first. It's a HERD of Mexicans.
25: Stephanie McMahon is wrestling gear. Yes please.
Zach Gowen had some really cool music.
Also, this whole bit was better than I remember it.
24: HHH is a lucky son of a bitch.
23: Anything CM Punk can do, Edge can do
first. And I don't just mean
Lita.
22: This countdown can't possibly be in order if
the best match in Smackdown history is No. 22.
21: Isn't it odd that a beam dropped onto the
top of a bus caused THAT big an explosion?
You'd think it was rigged. And
Todd Grisham is a legend.
20: Batista announcing he's injured. I know.
You're asking "Which exact time are they talking about here?". As it goes, I had forgotten Angle was
managed by Daivari...
19: That was indeed the greatest People's Elbow
ever. And Todd Grisham is a
legend.
18: Hulkamania negates Canadianess on July
4th.
17: So Kurt was after another wrestler's
wife... Not only that, but they were
still actually married. Mr. Kettle,
that Pot over there called you black...
16: I wonder how offensive the Japanese found
this... Plus, how did a more powerful
tranquilliser only make JBL Loopy when a normal one put Big Show
down?
15: You can include Chris Benoit in historical
retrospectives, but you sure as hell do your utmost to forget he's
there.
14: The Miz's Governor is Arnie? Arnie's Governor of Ohio? And who knew 500 million people watched
Smackdown that week?
13: It probably helps they don't mention what
happened on the following RAW...
12: Vince's recollection of his title win
doesn't exactly square with the truth... ;)
11: Bull Buchanan finally makes an appearance
just outside the top 10. Word Life.
10: Yeah, going to the Middle East for the
Troops is damn cool. It be nice if
looked cold one year though. Always
seems to be the middle of summer!
9: Man, that was a squash "match" and
a half... And Todd Grisham is a legend.
8: I'm guessing Melina was watching this match,
judging by the amount of screaming...
7: THE COACH~! needs his own DVD... And what does it say about me that I
actually remember Marc Lloyd?
6: Actually, never mind Foley's cage, riding a
casket seems like more fun... And Todd
Grisham is a legend.
5: You know, if it wasn't for the wildly out of
tune, Austin's singing wasn't actually
that bad... Angle, on the other hand, blows. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
4: I had forgotten the Corporate Ministry
formed on Smackdown's pilot episode...
3: C'mon...
Like HBK was going to do anything different...
2: HOLY S**T~!
Yeah, sounds about right...
1: It's maybe not Smackdown's greatest moment,
but it was a necessary one.
The DVD itself,
to sum it up quickly is a fine, largely tongue-in-cheek, retrospective on the
first decade of Smackdown. The segments
don't air in full, in the main part, but rather have clips with WWE people talking
about them. The matches on the set
though do air in full, so it's probably a good thing that the Ironman match was
just a segment. It's nice that no-one gets disrespected on here. Lesnar is treated like the star he is and
Kurt gets his due respect as well. And
of course, there's a healthy dose of Eddie.
As I noted, Chris Benoit does feature, but they do somewhat make a point
of not featuring him, as the only sight of him is in the TLC3 match, and we
only see shots of him at the beginning where they show the teams and the end
where he pulled the titles down for the win, but beyond that, we only ever see
his partner, Jericho, and the other three duos in the match. And Todd Grisham is a legend.
