Canadian Bulldog Presents... 20 Extreme Moments In ECW History
By Canadian Bulldog Feb 16, 2010 - 3:00 PM Later tonight, that bastard Vince McMahon is going to kill Extreme Championship Wrestling. Concerned, I contacted the authorities - but my pleas fell on deaf ears. I was reporting a homicide, but the cops thought I was talking about that jerk in TNA. So now Homicide is behind bars (pending bail), while wrestling's most innovative promotion is awaiting a death sentence. But, hey - I didn't cry when terrorists pushed my second wife out of a moving airplane, and I'm not about to cry now. Instead, I'm going to focus on the happy memories (like the time those terrorists pushed..... aw, never mind). What follows are 20 of the most extreme moments in ECW history:
1) January 7, 1996 - Rob Van Dam debuts in the ECW Arena as part of a stable with Bill Schwarzenegger, Mark Norris, Gary Stallone and Ted Seagal. 2) June 6, 1997 - Jerry "The King" Lawler and Jim Cornette invade ECW, making threats that the World Wrestling Federation will take over Extreme Championship Wrestling. Can you imagine if something like that ever happened??? 3) October 26, 1996 - Kurt Angle abruptly leaves an ECW television taping in Philadelphia, following a segment where Raven ties The Sandman to a crucifix. Objecting to the promotion's total lack of morals, Angle speeds off in his car, before being arrested for impaired driving, possessing steroids and stalking Rhaka Khan. 4) May 8, 1996 - ECW debuts on cable television, matching Paul Heyman's original vision for the promotion: On SportsChannel Philadelphia at 3 in the morning. 5) August 26, 1995 - Dean Malenko and Eddie Guerrero conclude their epic rivalry over the paternity of Dean's son Dominik Malenko.
6) October 1, 2000 - Jerry Lynn defeats Justin Credible (real name: Justin Tolerable) to win the ECW "World" Title at the Anarchy Rulz pay-per-view, proving that jobbers can main event, too. 7) April 13, 1997 - Taz and Sabu finally stand face to face in the ring after months of teased confrontations.... and begin making out. 8) March 7, 1994 - 911 is about to chokeslam another hapless foe, when he's interrupted by his archenemy 411, who introduces the catchphrase "Are you looking for a business or residential listing?" 9) August 6, 1995 - Cactus Jack launches a series of "anti-hardcore" promos. This was a good fourteen years before he'd cut a series of "anti-payoff" promos in TNA. 10) October 31, 1997 - Kimona Wanalaya (real name: Kimeera Wanablowya) performs a strip tease atop the ECW Arena to the delight of the crowd. The World Wrestling Federation attempts the same thing, using Mae Young.
11) January 7, 2001 - Rhino piledrives The Sandman's ex-wife Lori Fullington. And yet when I try something like that, everyone's all up in arms. 12) August 27, 1999 - ECW debuts on national television, matching Paul Heyman's original vision for the promotion: On The Nashville Network, in between "Rollerjam" and reruns of The Dukes Of Hazzard. 13) February 9, 2010 - Yoshi Tatsu and Goldust become the number-one contenders to the WWE Unified Tag Team Titles (hey, we never said all of these moments were from the Good ECW!)
14) February 24, 1997 - ECW alumnae invade The Manhattan Center for Monday Night Raw, only to find that creative has nothing for them. 15) August 27, 1994 - Shane Douglas tosses the NWA World Championship into a trash can, and is fined $500 because it was supposed to be recycled. 16) April 13, 2000 - WWF wrestler Tazz defeats WCW wrestler Mike Awesome (real name: Mike Adequate) to win the ECW "World" Title. Days later, the historic feat is replicated when Hardcore Holly defeats Steve Corino on an episode of WCW Power Hour. 17) February 17, 1996 - During an unscheduled appearance at the ECW Arena, Brian Pillman threatens to "yank out my johnson" in front of the stunned crowd. Unfortunately, he was talking about Ahmed Johnson. 18) December 2, 2004 - New Jack calls yours truly a "f*cking dumbass" when I asked him if he wanted to jump off a balcony as part of my grandparents' 50th anniversary celebrations. 19) October 4, 1994 - Tommy Dreamer (real name: Johnny Dreamer) accidentally blinds his sworn enemy The Sandman by spraying with his cologne "Arrogance" from a hot-pink atomizer.
20) June 13, 2006 - ECW returns to national television, matching Paul Heyman's original vision for the promotion: On a science fiction channel, complete with zombies, ghosts, vampires and a Stephanie McMahon-led writing team.
