T.G.I.New Year with Matt Dawgs...Remembering Doctor Death, The Two Things Timbaland Was At Raw, Tentative WrestleMania 26 Card, TNA Crunch Time, Brock and Her Mom, Big Baby Hangs 'Em Up, and More
Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It's New Years !!!!! Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled “Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy. MATT NOTE: Last week Christmas, this week New Years. Have a happy and safe New Years everyone. Enjoy 2010. 1) WWE News and Notes - R.I.P. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams. For those who don’t know his story, he has been battling cancer for a DAMN LONG time now. He was a warrior both in the ring and out of it. One of the best wrestlers in the entire world in the mid 90’s and was unfortunately “screwed” over by a stupid concept in WWE. He was scheduled to be pushed as a monster heel during the Attitude Era and into a feud with a freshly turned babyface Steve Austin for the WWE title. Austin was said to be looking forward to working with him as well. Unfortunately WWE booked the “Brawl for it All” tournament to show what “tough guys” their wrestlers were. It was basically booked to be a showcase for Doc but he tore his knee in a fight with Bart Gunn and then proceeded to be knocked out by Bart Gunn in the same “fight”. Thus with the knockout went his push along with it. He was released not too long after. Had WWE not done that stupid concept, Williams would have made a killing as a bad ass heel on the top of the card. Same if WWE had went with the concept but booked it as a work rather than letting them having them shoot fight. DUMB. If you’ve never seen Dr. Death in action, try to search clips for his tag team with Terry Gordy in Japan. By far one of the most awesome teams in wrestling history. Anyway, R.I.P. Dr. D!!! - I attended this week’s Smackdown /ECW tapings in New Jersey (spoilers on the main page) with my longtime friend Jay and it was his first WWE event. He now has one more thing to check off his bucket list. - It’s been a while since I’ve been to a WWE event and it was still impressive from a production standpoint but nothing spectacular from a storyline standpoint. Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho was by far the match of the night. These guys have such a great chemistry together in the ring. Simply amazing. - The most important angle was Tommy Dreamer’s final match in a WWE ring. He got a good sendoff after the match and his wife Beulah of Original ECW fame along with their daughters were ringside. It’ll be a shame if he ruins the wonderful tribute he got by going to TNA. But…..I do hear that he does have a tentative plan to do a project with Rob Feinstein shortly. Not sure what that is about. - What the f*ck was that on RAW? It’s almost as if WWE is purposely trying to get a piss poor RAW host? Even more amazing is that they had absolutely ZERO confidence in Timbaland so they only allowed him in front of the live audience for 2 minutes AT THE END of the show. He was A - HORRIBLE and B - High. - Watch his backstage skits and you can tell he is reading from a teleprompter/cue cards. What was even more amazing was that HE SUCKED AT IT TOO!!!!! I wouldn’t go far enough to say that he was worse than Johnny Damon but that is only because WWE knew he sucked and kept him to a bare minimum. But it was definitely close. - For those who were kind of confused at the entire Shawn Michaels/Vince McMahon angle, it was insinuated that Shawn will “take care” of Bret in order for Vince to give Shawn his match with Taker at Mania. My guess is, with Shawn a babyface (and I am 100% positive that he is going to meet with Bret next week behind closed doors prior to RAW for a LONG TIME) he is going to tease helping Vince beat Bret up at the end of the show only to help Bret. Vince doesn’t give Shawn his Taker match, Shawn wins the Rumble and challenges Taker anyway. - I absolutely LOVED how Vince McMahon said that he and Bret Hart never shared a word together during Bret’s Mania Induction weekend and that they haven’t spoken since “Bret screwed Bret” yet a few years back on WWE.com, they had THIS posted. - Everyone was expecting a DX vs. Bret feud but my feeling is that Jeri-Show win the titles back next week and Vince “hires” them to take out Bret. That brings Jeri-Show into a feud with the Hart Dynasty for the titles. Since Shawn is going to gun for Taker, HHH will move into another direction gun for Sheamus. As that is the talk for Mania. With Sheamus facing HHH (perhaps for the title) that leaves John Cena out. If Cena wins the title and Shawn is fighting Taker, perhaps Cena will be hunted by Batista. - If you are wondering where Randy Orton fits into those plans, the idea is to finally go ahead with the Ted DiBiase face turn (at or around the Rumble) and have Orton face him at Mania. - Sheamus finally has a name plate on his title belt. I still think he will drop the strap before Mania. - Best PIN ever!!! - With the big Bret Hart debut set for next week, it has fallen under the radar that John Cena will not be LIVE at RAW that day. Cena will be the WWE representative in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl to hype Wrestlemania. - Take it with a grain of salt because he hasn’t exactly been a pillar of truth but Teddy Hart has been telling friends that he is coming back to WWE as part of the Bret Hart signing. Being that he has probably one of the worst track records working for WWE, I wouldn’t expect it to be true and if it is, I wouldn’t expect him to last. - As per every year, WWE is pushing to try and get the Rock to wrestle at Wrestlemania this year against John Cena. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. But they are going to try. - Anyone know when the MARINE 2 comes out on DVD? Who’s in it by the way? - I’m still amazed that WWE last month gave away Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER for free on Smackdown. So how do they top that? The Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio last week on Smackdown FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER for free with little hype. WTF? It’s as if they just enjoy pissing money away. - WWE has signed Sarona Snuka (daughter of Hall of Famer “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka) to a developmental deal. She was recommended to WWE by former WWE Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. - Melina has apparently torn her ACL at a houseshow on Tuesday and may require surgery which will keep her out of action for up to 6 months or so. - Mickie James country music album goes on sale on March. - WWE has signed lucha libre star Incognito (formerly Mystico not to be confused with the more popular Mistico) to a WWE Developmental contract. - In the “cannot possibly be good news for his career” category, MVP was on the Opie and Anthony Sirius show and he confirmed that he loves to smoke pot and that he has tried to slow down lately due to the $2,500 fine levied for being caught. Dave Meltzer has reported in the past that several WWE Superstars have had their pushes decreased over the years due to marijuana usage. In other news, 2 + 2 = 4 - John Cena’s 12 Rounds debuts on HBO this weekend. I’ll try to check it out soon so I can review it. - Former WWE Woman’s Champion Candice Michelle announced on her Twitter that she is having a baby girl in a few months. Great news for her and her family.
- Congrats to Shad Gaspard from Cryme Tyme as he is expecting his first child. 2) TENTATIVE WRESTLEMANIA 26 LINE-UP ACCORDING TO ME
- Now there are still some main players without a match. Should Jeff Hardy come back in time for Mania, I am 100% certain that CM Punk will be his opponent. If not, Punk is DEFINITELY going into MITB. - Where Big Show is left is beyond me. Same for Mysterio who is holding off major knee surgery to take place in this event. Ditto for (King?) Booker T who should be back in the company in a few weeks or so. 3) TNA News and Notes: - It’s almost crunch time for TNA. As many in the company have already noted, they are not really concerned with beating WWE per se. The main purpose of the January 4th show is to raise awareness for the product as well as have a homerun show which will help lead new fans to the normal Thursday timeslot. Basically Hogan, Dixie and Jeff Jarrett all know WWE is going to slaughter them in the ratings. If they get anything above a 0.5 rating and it will be considered a success. - Hogan is dreaming big as he claimed in a recent radio interview that he is going to be the Vince McMahon of TNA wrestling. Pretty big shoes to fill no? - Eric Bischoff has basically confirmed that while the January 4th Impact will have the 6 sided ring, it will be gone sooner rather than later as they go back to the traditional style ring. - Not for nothing but it is kind of hard to make an impact (no pun intended) on January 4th when your last two shows prior to it have been a Divas special and a “Best of Special”. So far, nothing has been announced other than Hogan. Not a great way to build “buzz” for a show. - TNA has signed the Young Bucks to a contract meaning they will more than likely no longer be working for ROH. They’ll probably finish their commitments as I know they are still working Dragon Gate at Wrestlemania weekend in Phoenix. Either way, congrats to them. - Brock Hogan and her new future mom at the POOL . ( NOTE: Brock is a typo but I am leaving it as it is more fitting.) BTW, which one is Brooke and which one his Hulk’s fiancé? - Shawn Davari cleared up rumors on his TNA departure. He stated that contrary to rumors, it was not due to TNA wanting him to take a pay cut nor did it have to do with any heat between himself and Terry Taylor. He was just frustrated with the lack of a clear vision for his character and TNA management didn’t really have anything concrete for him so he decided to leave. The original pink slip was supposed to go to Cody Deaner (who rumors say has also been released along with Kip James). - Congrats also goes out to TNA Knockout Christy Hemme who recently got engaged over the holiday.
- Looking forward for the first time in forever that Ric Flair comes out to music other than a version of his music for the last 25 years.BTW, this is not confirmation that he signed with TNA. As far as I know, no agreement has been made yet and if it has, it is being kept under super guard. - Sting is expected to appear on the January 4th show. - Merry Christmas from Velvet Sky . - TNA has a scheduled conference call following Monday’s Impact. You can listen online at this LINK immediately following the show. 4) Ring of Honor/DGUSA/EVOLVE/Independent News and Notes - ROH has announced that the main event of its Los Angeles show on January 29th will feature The Briscoes and The Young Bucks vs. The American Wolves, Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero in an eight-man tag team match. WOW. That’s going to be a hell of a match. - No word on what Brian Kendrick is going to be doing at the 8th Anniversary show in February or whether or not he will be long term although I expect him to be. I also can picture Paul London following suit and coming back to ROH.
- Human Tornado will also be at the 8th anniversary show. I haven’t seen him wrestle in forever. He is going to become an ROH regular from here on in. - 8 years already? Amazing. I was at the first 5 shows for this company. Great stuff at the beginning. I also remember a little known fact that I tried to get famed IWC Legend Derek Burgan into this promotion at its existence and he refused to watch it at first. Took him almost a year to get into the promotion. LOL. - What the hell happened to Takeshi Morishima? I swore everyone was talking about him as if he was the second coming of Christ. Now, we don’t hear much about him. Will he never be in the US again? - Kevin Steen has yet to get his knee surgery. He is still wrestling. Still being advertised on ROH shows and still working at least through the month of January. WTF? - Austin Aries defends the ROH Title at ROH’s Los Angeles debut (in conjunction with the WRESTLE REUNION convention that weekend) against Jushin “Thunder” Liger on January 29th. - Pro Wrestling Guerrilla also has an event in conjunction with Wrestle Reunion and the card is below. - As I said last week, Jimmy Jacobs has indeed joined Gabe Sapolsky’s EVOLVE promotion. EVOLVE: debut show is on January 16, 2010 from Rahway New Jersey and the line up is as follows:

5) MMA News and Notes - The injury bug continues to bite UFC. Josh Koscheck is out of his February 6th fight against Paul Thiago and will be replaced by Mike Swick. - UFC Legend Don Frye announced he is retiring from MMA at the age of 44. Frye was an early UFC Legend joining the company at the request of Dan Severn. He was a wrestling legend who also made a big name for himself in Japan doing both MMA and pro wrestling. It's a real shame that some of the earlier UFC legends came along when they did because a lot of them would have made super big money today.
- Funny story, my friend Jay who I went to Smackdown with is the man who is getting married the same day of UFC 111 in Newark. He is actually getting married in New Jersey. Had he not been getting married on March 27th, we both would be going to our first UFC event. Anyway, he has a block of rooms booked at a nearby hotel for out of town guests, etc. He needed to reserve 4 more rooms for people and when he called, he was told the hotel is sold out. Wondering how that was possible, he asked what happened and he was informed that someone from UFC came in earlier this week and booked 100 rooms. So basically, after his wedding, he can hang with a bunch of UFC fighters who are staying at his hotel. AWESOME.
- Marcus "Big Baby" Jones has announced that he is done with MMA as well. Shame because he had a ton of potential. oo bad his jaw was made of glass. UFC 108 is on January 2, 2010 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:
UFC 109 is on February 6, 2010 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follow
UFC 110 is on February 21, 2010 from Sydney Australia and the line-up is as follows:

She hasn’t been hot for years and her pics are more photoshopped/CGI’d than Avatar!!!! - Speaking of Avatar , I saw it on Wednesday on the IMAX 3D and JESUS H. If you have a Wii, buy this game instantly!!! - Big props to WWI’s own RD LEE who has landed a gig at GEEK WEEK . While he says he is going to remain loyal to WWI, I know the truth. He will forget about us. It’s all gravy though. Canadian Bulldog has promised to mention him weekly in columns about how RD used to say he loved WWI and will always remain faithful yet never makes any appearances anymore and doesn’t “give back” to his fans. - How is THIS even possible? What if she had a gun or a knife? Where was security? What makes this A MILLION times worse is that the same woman, HAS DONE IT TO THE POPE BEFORE!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Is there not a terrorist watch list for things like this? - WTF ? From Teen Wolf. I never noticed this in my countless viewings of the movie.
