T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #139

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE: Happy New Year to all!! Hope you all had a nice holiday and enjoyed yourselves. Here is to a great 2012. Hopefully you all succeed in your resolutions so long as they are good and honest ones. Don’t want any bank robbers or crazy people in our midst. Here is my latest. Lots of news these past two weeks.

WWE News and Notes

- RAW is JERICHO again. Much to the surprise of no one since if you read this column you already knew it several weeks back; Chris Jericho returned to WWE on RAW Monday in what was a return that has sparked several debates across the interweb. On one hand, many people, me included, think it was a fantastic and brilliant return. Others including WWI CEO James Guttman thinks it was a waste of vignettes. Regardless on what side of the fence you sit on, it is all good because it accomplished its purpose. It got everyone talking.

- Amazingly enough, a PICTURE of Jericho in Nashville International Airport hit the internet on Sunday, January 1st. I am shocked that WWE knew it was a surprise and yet had Jericho fly commercial into a local airport as opposed to flying him on their corporate jet. Jericho took to twitter to deny the photo was legit saying it was photo shopped. WWE did so with Rock when they announced a special guest host for Wrestlemania. WWE management felt that instead of flying him directly into Memphis and then driving the 250 miles to Nashville was enough to keep his return a secret rather than flying him privately.

- Jericho’s RETURN .

- Besides that, RAW continued its pattern of being a crap show. No redeeming qualities about it what so ever. The show was apparently written and changed up until 8:00 pm ET day of. That is NOT how you put together a good show.

- Did John Cena say that one of his New Years Resolutions was to show Dwayne Johnson that he has lost his lady parts? Was that an admission that he in fact had lady parts at one point? Way to bury yourself there d*ck!!!

- WHERE THE F*CK IS BRODUS CLAY!!!????!!!! I am sick and tired of them announcing his debut and then not giving it in. What the f*ck?

- John Laurinaitis is awesome, plain and simple. He took a role that was bound to fail due to his lack of experience in front of a camera and blossomed into a player. Example: He was selling his arm when he “accidently” cost CM Punk his match with Dolph Ziggler. Following the Chris Jericho re-debut, Laurinaitis tweeted the following: "I know everyone watching #WWE #RAW is asking the same question right now. The answer is, Yes, I think my arm will be ok-Thank u 4 ur concern" That my friend is F’N GOLD.

- The finish of the Punk/Ziggler match that caused the “arm injury” was not GOLD. Are you telling me that a fall to the outside of the ring incapacitated Punk for him to get counted out? Can Punk be made to look any weaker?

- PS: We were thisclose to not even having to discuss a finish since Ziggler legit almost KILLED PUNK on a botched stun gun. That was frightening to look at.

- I cannot for the life of me, buy a water bottle shot to the head as a devastating maneuver that knocks someone unconscious. I just cannot.

- The ending to RAW was crap-tastic. Kane trying to pull Zack Ryder under the ring through a hole that ended up shooting fire? Really? That was ‘cutting edge”? Really? On top of that, where was the logic in booking? Since the 1980’s, booking has been fairly simple. The evil guys get the heat on the good guys and the good guys get revenge for it. Example: Hulk Hogan gets laid out by a big bad villain on WWE Superstars or Saturday Night’s Main Event and then overcomes the odds at Wrestlemania or Survivor Series. So why in the world would you book a handicap elimination match where the babyface team have a 3 on 2 advantage and then eliminate one from each team after a few minutes so they have a 2 on 1 advantage before winning? That makes no sense.

- Also making no sense is why Mark Henry is not resting his injured groin? He has been working limited matches on houseshows and covered in tag and multi person matches on television. If you want to keep him on TV, fine. But it makes no sense to put him on houseshow matches. Let him rest and heal up.

- Randy Orton is resting and healing up hence the angle where Wade Barrett threw him down a flight of stairs. The injury referenced on commentary is legitimate. He has a herniated disc. He is expected to not wrestle until the Royal Rumble.

- Alberto Del Rio on the other hand, not so lucky. He underwent a minor surgery to repair his torn groin and is not expected to return until AFTER the Royal Rumble. Sucks.

- Does Hornswoggle still have a home under the ring? Was there fire damage because of Kane? Is that covered by insurance?

- If Daniel Bryan does not turn heel and continues to be buried by Michael Cole, he is going to suffer irreparable damage in the future. That is a FACT.

- Interesting tweet from The Rock following Jericho’s return. TheRock: "@IAmJericho Helluva kick ass return. Welcome back my friend. Look forward to having some fun w you."

- It is expected that the Rock will appear in some form on RAW for most shows following the Royal Rumble to hype his Mania match. Not all appearances will be live as some will be taped. Rock is not done with WWE at Mania as he is going to appear periodically on and off following Mania and may have a match with someone other than Cena at Summerslam. The key names mentioned were Orton, Jericho and Punk (in that order).

- Several key people in position of power within WWE are working feverishly to convince Vince McMahon to DELAY the start of the WWE Network from the planned April 1st launch date. They have no clearances other than Comcast right now and the only original programming they have set is “Legend’s House” which starts filming next week in Florida. There is still no network head hired yet nor does he have the necessary 200 employees he needs to run a network. Many fear that launching on the 1st of April with little to no clearance on cable will assure that it is a flop.

- According to DAVE MELTZER , there is a TON of heat on Evan Bourne as HHH confronted him recently before a show and blamed him for the story of his suspension and R-Truth’s not suspension being leaked. Sources say that HHH is not a fan of Bourne and the only reason he has a semi-push was because of Stephanie who sees something unique in him. If you noticed, Bourne and Kingston have not been on RAW as of late and have been relegated to Superstars and an occasional Smackdown appearance.

- Skip Sheffield made his return this week defeating Michael McGuillicuty in a dark match before RAW went on the air.

- Donny Marlow from FCW (Haku’s son) will be working on the main roster as Hunico’s bodyguard using the name Camacho.

- Happy birthday to Jim Ross who celebrated his 60th birthday this week.

- In an interview with WWE Magazine, Mark Henry stated the following: "Well, I'm older in the business, and my children miss their dad. Not to mention the aches and pains are just making it harder to get through everything. But, right now, I'm feeling fresh and things are going well. I'm going to hang around as long as I can."

- Shawn Michaels noted this week in a fan Q&A that he will NEVER appear in a non-WWE wrestling ring and is WWE for life. He also noted that he has a ‘special” contract with WWE. He is not under a Legends Deal nor is he under a regular contract. He stated that the deal is exclusive to him and him alone.

- Jim Ross doing COMMENTARY at an Oklahoma Thunder NBA basketball game.

- WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper tweeted a strong hint that he will be one of the guests on the WWE Network “Legend’s House” show when he stated the following: "How can you put 8 seasoned guys living together...lets hear the name of the guy that's going to control them week 2.5. Not Vince! No Man! Telling you...things are going to get Very Real. Straight fact,I don't like it..don't tease me... don't play with me...I bite, then bury!!!" Piper also let it slip that The Honky Tonk Man will be one of the residents of the house.

- John Morrison is making his first “post-WWE” wrestling appearance and he will actually be wrestling. He is working in the Philippines on February 4th for the World Wrestling Fan Xperience promotion. He is replacing Ken “Mr. Anderson” vs. Shelton Benjamin. Also working the show are a bunch of former WWE names including MVP, Melina, Chris Masters, Carlito, Luke Gallows, Rhino, Jimmy Yang, Shawn Daivari, Billy Gunn, Jillian Hall, Snitsky and more.

- Sean “X-Pac” Waltman was a virtual lock for a position within the WWE developmental system based on his friendship with HHH and his current ‘freelance” work in developmental. That is likely out the window now as he was arrested before Christmas in Florida for drug possession. He was arrested while in possession of Vicodin, Hydromorphine and drug paraphernalia (likely some sort of pipe or needle). Waltman had claimed that he had cleaned up a while back and was no longer using.

- New York Yankee 3rd Baseman Alex Rodriquez is currently dating former WWE Diva Torrie Wilson. They were SPOTTED over New Years weekend with actor George Clooney and his girlfriend former WWE Diva Stacy Kiebler. Kiebler and Wilson are still best friends from their time in WCW together.

- Speaking of Kiebler, she is now getting $25,000 per appearance all because she is dating Clooney. WOW.

- Kevin Nash has legit challenged Warrior (formerly known as Ultimate Warrior) to a shoot fight. MMA rules on Wrestlemania weekend in Miami. Warrior made a twitter comment about Nash when asked by a fan why he doesn’t dye his hair black like Nash. Warrior responded: “"I'm not a d***head who thrives on stealing the limelight from young guys.". When made aware of his comments, Nash went on a tirade offering to fight Warrior and both men put $100,000 on the line. Warrior did not reply.

- Comedian Chelsea Handler made an offhand remark degrading women’s wrestling on her show “Chelsea Lately” when discussing Alex Rodriquez budding romance with Torrie Wilson. In response, WWE Divas Champion Beth Phoenix invited Handler to attend the next WWE event in Los Angeles. This is not likely a publicity stunt between the two parties as Phoenix probably took it upon herself to do this in order to get attention to herself and the company. Good idea if you ask me.

- WWE 12 question. I got it for Christmas and I was wondering, was it hard for everyone else when they first played it? I am assuming counters, etc will get easier when I get more games in but off the bat, I am getting my ass handed to me more often than not. Any tips? Pointers?

WWE “ROYAL RUMBLE” PPV is on January 29, 2012 from St. Louis Missouri and the line-up is as follows:

  • 30 Man Royal Rumble Match featuring TBD.
  • WWE TITLE: CM Punk (c) vs. US Champion Dolph Ziggler w/Vickie Guerrero and Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and interim General Manager of RAW Mr. John Laurinaitis as special guest referee.

- There is serious talk about Rob Van Dam leaving TNA when his contract expires in March. Van Dam is obviously disgruntled with his use in TNA and stated to the Baltimore Sun during an interview that he is open to a WWE return. Losing RVD would be yet another former WWE star that went to TNA thinking the sun was brighter only to realize it isn’t. That list includes Booker T, Kevin Nash, Mick Foley, Christian and now RVD.

TNA Genesis PPV is THIS SUNDAY from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • IMPACT TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
  • TNA TAG TITLES: Matt Morgan & Crimson (c) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
  • X-DIVISION TITLE: Austin Aries (c) vs. Kid Kash vs. Jesse Sorenson vs. Zema Ion
  • KNOCKOUT’S TITLE: Gail Kim (c) vs. Mickie James
  • Kurt Angle vs. James Storm
  • ”The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero vs. Devon
  • Abyss vs. Bully Ray in a Monster’s Ball match (Abyss joins Immortal if he loses)

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Ring of Honor closed out their year with “Final Battle” that had Kevin Steen return to the company full time by defeating Steve Corino in what was one of the most brutal matches in Ring of Honor history. The match ended when Steen nailed Corino with a package piledriver through a stack of chairs. Steen then killed El Generico with a package piledriver through a table as he ran in to attack Steen. Steen threatened to kill Jim Cornette as well. Steen is now working in the promotion and his goal is to END ROH for good. He challenged ROH Champion Davey Richards to a title match and it is likely that they will carry this storyline through all of 2012.

- In other ROH news, the Briscoes recaptured their tag team titles from Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team of Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.

- ROH has announced that the television title currently held by Jay Lethal is only going to be defended on television tapings and iPPV’s. No longer will be defended at live events.

- Several Chikara talents will be making their ROH debuts when the company returns to Philadelphia. This is all part of the “proving ground” initiative where anyone in wrestling whether contracted to ROH or not can come and receive a non-title match against a title holder. Should they win, they can get a title shot in the future. The first proving ground match will feature a Chikara tag team taking on the Briscoes.

- Sinclair Broadcasting is expanding their markets for television over the next several months. They are planning on airing the ROH TV show in West Palm Beach Florida, Austin Texas and Medford Oregon soon. Other cities are planned as the year goes on.

- ROH has reached a talent exchange agreement with Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan. Undercard talents will be exchanged for “tours” of both companies.

- Chris Hero will be working the ROH show in Philadelphia next weekend. Hero’s WWE status is still up in the air as he is undergoing further medical testing by the promotion. The show will be headlined by ROH Champion Davey Richards defending the title vs. ROH TV Champion Jay Lethal.

- Longtime independent wrestler and hardcore match specialist Corporal Robinson had to announce his retirement due to a severe back injury and multiple concussions. He is going to need surgery on his back and doctors informed him that one bad bump can sever his spine and cause death. I met Robinson a few times when I wrestled and he was one of the coolest guys I have met on the independent scene. Sad to see a career end this way. He is the current ICP Juggalo Championship Wrestling Champion.

MMA News and Notes

- UFC was ROCKED with news that obviously did not make Dana White a happy camper last weekend. Brock Lesnar, UFC’s biggest PPV draw, was defeated pretty handedly by former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem in the first round of their epic battle of the titans. Overeem won by TKO (ref stoppage) when he leveled Lesnar with a kick to his ribs forcing Lesnar to wince in pain as he fell to his knees. Overeem pounced on him and the referee stopped the fight as Lesnar could not continue. Following the fight, Lesnar announced that he is retiring from MMA competition as he promised his wife and children that he would retire if he lost and if he won, he would get his heavyweight title shot vs. Junior Dos Santos and retire following that fight. Lesnar leaving UFC is a major financial blow to the company as the majority of his PPV buyrates drew 1,000,000 buys and early estimates put this fight vs. Overeem in the 800,000 buy range (since it was on a Friday as opposed to the normal Saturday slot). That is a GREAT number considering it was New Years Eve weekend and a Friday.

- In all likelihood, Lesnar didn’t really have a choice but to retire. Between several bouts with diverticulitis and a surgery just 9 months ago that saw 12 inches of his intestines removed, Lesnar was not the same. He was a shell of the explosive behemoth that captured UFC by storm in 2007. It was obvious during the fight with Overeem that he just wasn’t “there”. He half heartedly attempted a takedown, was moving slower than he has in the past and his heart was not into the fight. His stamina and explosiveness is probably lost forever.

- Many people are assuming that Lesnar is well on his way back to the WWE however that is not the case. When asked, Dana White stated that Lesnar, even though retired, is still contracted to UFC for several more fights. So should Lesnar want to pursue something with the WWE that involves physicality, he would have to clear it with White or be released from his contract.

- Say what you want about Brock Lesnar being a joke in MMA or whatnot but the fact is, he is/was a DRAW and a major one at that. The only 3 people in PPV history to draw two 1,000,000 PPV buys in a calendar year are Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao and Brock Lesnar. Think about that. Oscar De La Hoya is the second biggest PPV draw in boxing history and he did not draw two 1,000,000 PPV’s in a calendar year. Same with Floyd Mayweather who is the biggest PPV draw of the last 5 years. Brock did. Amazing feat.

- Alistair Overeem will now face UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos (c) for the Heavyweight title in 2012.

- Not that it matters but Brock Lesnar was suspended for 6 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following the fight with Overeem due to an abdominal injury (rumored to be broken ribs) due to the kick from Overeem.

- Probably not the best time but the sports apparel company Everlast just signed Brock Lesnar to a merchandise deal. LOL.

- UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones told ESPN that he is currently planning on fighting 3 or 4 times in 2012. Originally he had asked Dana White to take 4 months off following his last win over Lyoto Machida but has now went back on that and wants to get back into the Octagon sooner rather than later. He also stated that he would like to finish all of his opponents in 2012 like he did in 2011. WOW.

- Chael Sonnen is claiming that he is done with Anderson Silva. He realizes that Silva is a chicken and isn’t going to fight him so he is going to move on to George St. Pierre, Jon Jones or Junior Dos Santos. In all honesty, Sonnen is just talking to get people talking. He will NEVER be able to make 170 lbs and even if he did, GSP isn’t fighting anytime soon. Jon Jones will MURDER him and Junior Dos Santos is just unrealistic as he is way to big and Sonnen will struggle to make heavyweight.

- Speaking of Sonnen, per the WWE section above, WWE Champion CM Punk will accompany Sonnen to the ring for his fight on 1/28 vs. Mark Munoz on UFC on FOX 2. The show emulates from Chicago, Punk’s hometown.

- UFC legend and future hall of famer Tito Ortiz announced that he would like to fight one final fight on July 4th weekend vs. either Chuck Liddell (unlikely) or Forrest Griffin and it will be his retirement bout from MMA.

- UFC Light Heavyweight Thiago Silva is cleared to re apply for his fighting license after officially serving a one year suspension for failing a drug test at UFC 125 on January 1, 2011.

- Miguel Torres was re-hired by UFC after being fired for a comment on twitter making light of rape. Dana White brought him back after claiming that Torres is undergoing sensitivity training and has both visited and donated money to rape crisis shelters in his hometown of Chicago.

- Former Strikeforce Heavyweight top prospect Shane Del Rosario, who was on a tear in MMA before being severely injured in a car accident, is going to debut with UFC in 2012. Del Rosario was one to watch when he was fighting before almost losing his life. Hopefully he can regain his form. Also joining the UFC soon, Strikeforce Heavyweight “The Grave Digger” Chad Griggs. Griggs is best known for being the “spoiler” in the Heavyweight Grand Prix by defeating Bobby Lashley by TKO and Valentijn Overeem (Brother of Alistair). Griggs debuts against undefeated Travis Brown at UFC 145.

- Brittany Palmer has a NEW YEARS RESOLUTION .

- 100% convinced that the movie Haywire is going to make GINA CARANO into a star. I made my wife watch the preview for it on television the other day without telling her who Gina was and she is interested in seeing it. That is a PLUS.

  • Tarec Saffiedine vs. Tyler Stinson

UFC 142 is on January 14, 2012 from Rio de Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:
