T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #141

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: A lot of you newer fans who do not have WWE Classics On Demand aren’t going to really know this week’s guest with James Guttman. But if you grew up a fan in the 80’s and 90’s you sure will!!! This week James Guttman interviews JAMISON of the Bobby Heenan Show and Primetime Wrestling. He and Heenan were CLASSIC together. GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes

- When Mick Foley was released by TNA, he made mention in several interview that he feels like he has a handful of matches left in him and he would want some notice beforehand in order to get in “ring shape” for those matches. Well apparently it looks like NO ONE INFORMED HIM ABOUT RAW ON MONDAY because he has to be close to 500 lbs. Jesus H. Christ was he out of shape. I don’t think I have ever seen him that big.

- How long did that opening segment last? That isn’t a hypothetical question, it was legit. The answer is 18 minutes. RAW’s opening promo went 18 minutes long. According to sources, it was penciled in for 10 minutes. So it went 8 minutes over; hence why the Air Boom vs. Primo/Epico tag title match was 2 minutes long. It got cut by 8 minutes.

- I love how Mick Foley is pretending that his TNA run didn’t happen. LOL. He said he wanted to wrestle in the Royal Rumble because he wants his youngest kids to see him wrestle at least once. Um…you just wrestled a few months ago in TNA dude.

- FYI…The reason Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston lost the WWE Tag Team Titles to Primo and Epico at a WWE Live Event in Oakland California is because Evan Bourne has been suspended by WWE for 60 DAYS for the second violation of the WWE Wellness policy. Not a good move for Evan. One more violation and by WWE policy, he is Future Endeavored. Suffice to say, WWE is NOT pleased with Bourne.

- With Bourne gone, WWE needs to find a babyface tag team to face the champs. No idea who. I really wish WWE would give tag teams a shot again. Remember when the WWE tag team division was stacked during the Attitude Era? Edge and Christian, The Hardy’s, The Dudley’s, The A.P.A., the New Age Outlaws, Too Cool, etc.

- Bourne will be cleared to return to WWE in March however it is unlikely he will be back on television before Wrestlemania. WWE is likely to keep him off TV until after as punishment for his second suspension.

- You know what was awesome (that is sarcasm by the way), when Zack Ryder lost the US title to Jack Swagger and then it was revealed that Ryder wasn’t medically cleared to wrestle. It was awesome because literally one month ago on Smackdown, Daniel Bryan cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Mark Henry for the title and the crowd went nuts even though LITERALLY a few minutes after doing so, Teddy Long reversed the decision because Henry was not medically cleared to wrestle. Isn’t that weird?

- R-Truth is funny but I can’t really see this character as a babyface. I get they want to sell Little Jimmy T-shirts and they will once they launch but his character being insane is more suited for a heel. That is just my opinion. On another note, those Disney jokes/pictures were abysmal.

- Can Miz be rehabbed? Seriously, he is nothing more than a joke now. I do not think they can make him a main eventer/title contender again. He is laughable.

- Was that a JTG sighting? He still works here?

- The Funkasaurus is growing on me. I think he can definitely get this act over. “Somebody call my momma!!!”

- I still cannot believe that Arianne is the first from Tough Enough to make the main roster.

- I am still flabbergasted to that some fans still aren’t “getting” the fact that Chris Jericho is a heel. It’s mind boggling. He is still getting cheered when he does the things he is doing.

- PS. – Jericho getting the crowd hyped and then tagging out and leaving was AWESOME.

- Finally, a good Kane/John Cena segment. Although I am confused as to why Cena was so pissed at Swagger? What did Swagger do? He didn’t petition for the match. He didn’t force John Laurinaitis to make Ryder wrestle. He didn’t punish Ryder physically on purpose. It was Ryder who kept kicking out of Swagger’s finishing move. I don’t get it. All Swagger did was wrestle and beat Ryder fair and square.

- From most accounts, I am one of the few that I know of, but did anyone else LOVE the finish to the Daniel Bryan vs. Big Show match on Smackdown last week where AJ got run over? I thought it was fantastic. Anyone disagree? Why?

- Bryan is FANTASTIC in his slow evolving heel role. It is a shame mainly because I believe WWE is still on track for Randy Orton to battle Mark Henry at Wrestlemania for the title (hence why Orton lost all those matches cleanly to Henry). If that is the case, Bryan is likely to lose to the title to Henry soon, perhaps as soon as the Royal Rumble. I wish WWE would just call an audible and have Bryan hold the title until Mania and then have him lose to Orton.

- CM Punk was ON FIRE during his promo to end the show on John Laurinaitis. Noticed that Laurinaitis confirmed he planned on screwing Punk out of the title and also called himself the “soon to be” permanent General Manager of RAW. Big red flags folks. Those statements including the screw up by allowing Zack Ryder to wrestle while not being medically cleared are all signs that his tenure as interim General Manager are about to end.

- Laurinaitis is awesome in his role as Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager of Raw. I hate to see him go but the writing is on the wall.

- Former WWE Diva and current ROH 1st Lady Maria Kanellis was visiting backstage at RAW this week.

- Shawn Michaels was backstage at Smackdown this week.

- Also backstage was former WWE Star Rikishi. He came to the event with his sons Jimmy and Jey Uso.

- Fans in Washington State were treated to a fun surprise at a live event last weekend when current WWE agent Jamie Noble competed vs. World Champion Daniel Bryan. For those who did not follow Noble when he was in ROH, Bryan defeated Noble to become ROH Heavyweight Champion in what was a fantastic match back in 2005.

- Apparently Vince McMahon isn’t a fan of free publicity because he has vetoed the idea of WWE Champion CM Punk walking UFC star Chael Sonnen to the ring for his UFC on FOX 2 fight on January 28th. Now I know some people are going to defend Vince’s decision saying what does he get to benefit from this but the fact is, more people are going to watch the show on FOX then are going to see the Royal Rumble the following day. It can get Punk some publicity since he will have so many eyes on him and maybe it can help people want to see the PPV.

- WWE is hoping that Christian will be medically cleared for action in time to compete in the Royal Rumble. If not, he will be in action before the February Elimination Chamber PPV.

- Ric Flair CONFIRMED at an autograph signing last week that he will be at the Hall of Fame and on stage to accept with the rest of the Four Horsemen. The rumor backsyage on Monday was that they were going to be inducted into the Hall by Triple H and Shawn Michaels. The reason for this is that both men lobbied for the group to be inducted. I understand if they do because it was unlikely Vince McMahon was going to induct them without someone in power to lobby for them. That being said, I have no idea why Dusty Rhodes isn’t inducting them. Dusty is the only person who should induct, especially THAT particular group of Horsemen since he was their main feud.

- A lot of speculation on how Ole Anderson is feeling about not being inducted with the rest of the Horsemen however Ole cleared that up in an interview with Mike Mooneyham. Ole stated that he hates Vince McMahon and McMahon hates him back. It is as simple as that. He also said that due to his multiple sclerosis, he wouldn’t be able to attend anyway. He is confined to a wheelchair and has to constantly lay down to alleviate pain. So there would be no way for him to travel to the show anyway.

- In a separate interview with Mike Mooneyham, Ric Flair discussed his induction and informed Mike that HHH called him during the RAW when the induction was announced to confirm it before the video package. Flair was at an Impact taping, changed the channel on the television to RAW and the entire locker room was the video. Flair also stated that WWE informed him that his individual speech will be 7 minutes long. When he was inducted individually in 2008, his speech went over an hour. That SUCKS.

- Alberto Del Rio is expected to induct Mil Mascaras (his real life uncle) and Christian is obviously going to induct Edge. There is talk of having the Rock induct Yokozuna as well in order to get him to appear on the show.

- A lot of noise has been made about where Wrestlemania 29 would be held with Dallas Stadium being the lead rumor monger. This rumor was debunked last weekend when Dallas Cowboys spokesman Brett Daniels stated that the NCAA has Dallas Stadium locked up on Wrestlemania weekend in both 2013 and 2014 putting the building out of contention for the big show.

- WWE is seriously considering breaking tradition and having Wrestlemania 30 from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (where the NY Giants and NY Jets play) rather than from Madison Square Garden. WWE would have loved to continue the tradition of having Mania take place for every 10 year anniversary at MSG however Mania has taken a life of its own and become a stadium show. Doing it in an arena is going to cost them a ton of money at the gate even with raised ticket prices. MSG for Mania can hold maybe 18,000. Set up for wrestling, MetLife stadium can hold 75,000 people. The flip side is that MetLife is not a domed stadium so you are rolling the dice with weather conditions. Could be cold, it could rain.

- To the surprise of absolutely NO ONE, WWE has begun officially advertising that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be appearing on the “go-home” edition of RAW leading to Wrestlemania.

- Regardless of when the WWE Network launches, WWE 24/7 is probably going to go off the air at the end of March.

- In other Network news, DAVE MELTZER is reporting that Kevin Dunn has proven his worth with assisting with the handling of the change in date of launch. He has come up with several ideas that Vince McMahon likes in regards to 30 minute shows to fill time. It has been widely speculated that when McMahon steps down and the company is run by Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, Dunn would be ousted form power. He will still be Executive Vice President of Production but would not have nearly the amount of influence that he currently has now.

- WWE NXT is 46 weeks in now. 46!!!!!!

- WWE has signed Jody Kristofferson to a developmental deal. Jody is the son of musician and actor Kris Kristofferson who starred in the Blade series as well as other feature films. Jody had a tryout several months ago and HHH was impressed with him not realizing who his father was (HHH worked with him in Blade).

- Let me preface this by saying that former WWE Superstar Marty Jannetty admittedly posted on his Facebook that he was drinking Jack Daniels for 48 hours. That is likely the reason the next paragraph may sound a little off. Janetty posted: "o hell yes, Imma ax this now.. Shawn, my good friend, what up bee otch??... I gotta book coming out..well not yet..there"s a few moral issues.., you may wanta contact me first, cause Im telling bout my life, you being a part of it, well hell..call me...but in truth, I'd rather you not, the book will be soooo much better if I dont fall for your shit.. but If you say "DONT SAY THAT" ...I'll remember what yo religious fake ass said about me in your bullshit book..Anyone wanting to see real, will..I aint protecting yo ass..."

- Social media is becoming the hot bed for news and scoops involving professional wrestling. Paul Heyman, in response to a fan question, tweeted the following to Jim Ross: "Greatest announcer ever. And 1 TOUGH mentor. I learned about wrestling and LIFE from JR." JR then replied, "but Happy...you never hired Ol JR..could've been a contend-a. Do you remember when we discussed me being a 'surprise?" Ross was referring to the until now unknown fact that during one of the times Ross was fired in real life by Vince McMahon, he toyed with the idea of joining ECW as an announcer with Joey Styles.

- Episode 48 of “ Z! True Long Island Story

WWE “ROYAL RUMBLE” PPV is on January 29, 2012 from St. Louis Missouri and the line-up is as follows:

  • 30 Man Royal Rumble Match featuring Jinder Mahal, Sheamus, Santino Marella, Wade Barrett and more.
  • WWE TITLE: CM Punk (c) vs. US Champion Dolph Ziggler with Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and interim General Manager of RAW Mr. John Laurinaitis as special guest referee.
  • John Cena vs. Kane

- For the record, Ric Flair HAS NOT been granted permission to attend the WWE Hall of Fame yet and since he was announced by WWE before getting any deal in place, TNA if it chooses to, has a legal case against WWE.

- Hulk Hogan will return from his TNA hiatus on the January 28th Impact tapings from London. Hogan has been MIA for several months now. I am hoping he isn’t planning on wrestling again though.

- Sting has joined Twitter. He is @Sting. He has not made a decision on his future in wrestling. The rumors that are circulating about his retirement come from the misinterpretation of Dixie Carter’s statement about him wrestling in UK for the last time. The reason she said that is because it is likely true. Sting joining the UK tour and subsequent Impact taping is likely the last time Sting will wrestle…IN THE UK. That does not mean he will not wrestle beyond 2012 in the United States. Sting is on a different schedule/contract than most TNA talents and he gets to pick and choose what shows outside of Orlando he can/will appear on. So if TNA goes to the UK in 2013 and Sting is still with the company, he will likely not go on that road trip.

- Best wishes to Eric Young who successfully underwent his 15TH operation on his throat this week since 2004. Young has had throat issues all his life hence why his voice is raspy.

- What the hell is going on with Mr. Anderson? He has not been on TNA television since November. That is kind of odd, no?

- TNA has officially removed Jacqueline Moore from their roster page as well as Jesse Neal and his real life girlfriend Toxxin (Christine Von Erie).

- Kurt Angle tweeted Jim Ross the following messages: “You will call my last match. Somwhow. Love you.” Not sure what that means exactly since Angle just recently re-signed with TNA and he is well into his 40s with a hell of a lot of wear and tear on his body and neck.

- It is confirmed that Rob Van Dam’s contract expires in March and while some people in TNA seem to think he isn’t leaving, some people close to him state that he is out the door the minute it is up. It was a complete waste of his time to be there to begin with. He was misused from the start.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- R.I.P. to longtime independent wrestler Tony Lazzaro who passed away this week. He wrestled under his own name as well as the name Apollo Santiago.

- At the Evolve event at the ECW arena last weekend which was the final wrestling show at the location, Low-Ki made his Evolve DEBUT and will be working on future shows including Wrestlemania Weekend in Miami.

- Dave “Fit” Finlay will be working with Evolve again in 2012. I am really shocked that WWE has not hired him back yet considering he has such a great mind for the business and was an invaluable agent. You would think that enough time has passed where the heat for his live event incident would have blown over by now.

- For those who watch ROH TV online religiously, from what I understand (I haven’t seen it yet) is that the latest TV has highlights of the 80 minute elimination tag match from Glory by Honor. I heard that match was INCREDIBLE.

- “The Franchise” Shane Douglas is planning on running an “Extreme Reunion” tour with the first date being in Philadelphia on April 28th. More info can be found HERE .

- UNDISPUTED (a new wrestling comedy): Episode 1 , Episode 2 & Episode 3 .

RING OF HONOR returns to Philadelphia PA TONIGHT and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: Davey Richards (c) vs. Jay Lethal
  • Eddie Edwards vs. Roderick Strong: No Holds Barred
  • Chris Hero vs. Michael Elgin
  • Future Shock vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin
  • ROH TAG TEAM Proving Ground Match: The Briscoes (c) vs. CHIKARA's Jigsaw & Hallowicked
  • Kevin Steen vs. Kenny King
  • Steve Corino interview about his ROH future
  • Meet and Greet pre-show with Briscoes and Chris Hero

MMA News and Notes

- The big news this week is that ESPN did an “Outside the Lines” expose on UFC claiming that UFC does not compensate their fighters accordingly compared to the amount of money the company makes. While it wasn’t a complete smear campaign piece, it did not portray UFC in a positive light. Dana White completely blasted ESPN and had the unedited footage that they filmed with their own crew and released it to show that some stuff was edited in such a way that UFC was portrayed in a negative light. HERE is the Dana White version.

- UFC has been dominating press releases for MMA this week. They announced on Tuesday that UFC 145 from Montreal has been cancelled. It was scheduled to take place on March 24th but Dana White stated that they were not going to go ahead with the card citing a lack of a championship caliber main event match. They will have an event in Montreal in 2012, only at a later date.

- Also announced this week was the fact that Mark Munoz has injured himself during training and has to pull out of his UFC on Fox 2 semi-main event vs. Chael Sonnen. Instead, Sonnen will now face Michael Bisping with the winner going onto face Anderson Silva for the Middleweight title later this summer.

- Bisping is pretty confident in his abilities and stated that Sonnen will not knock him out or submit him. The only way Sonnen wins this fight is to outpoint him and if that happens, then he doesn’t deserve a title shot.

- With Bisping being pulled from his fight vs. Demian Maia, Maia will not face the undefeated and rising prospect Chris Weidman.

- UFC 142 in Brazil has come and gone and it was an AWESOME show which featured nothing but non-stop action. It was also likely the most watched UFC event EVER as 23 million people in Brazil alone watched the show on free TV in Brazil. That is a 14.6 rating with 70 percent of all homes in Brazil tuned in.

- In the end, Anthony Johnson’s not being able to make weight last week wasn’t that big of a deal because Vitor Belfort disposed of him anyway via tap out. After I went to press last week, it was announced that Anthony Johnson weighed in for the fight at 197 pounds when the contracted weight was 185. Dana White convinced Vitor to fight if Johnson would give up 20% of his purse to Vitor and Johnson had to weight in right before the fight and be less than 205 lbs. He was. Vitor then made short work of Johnson, who since it was his third time not being able to make weight, was subsequently released by UFC.

- Vitor Belfort made it clear that his fight should have been awarded the fight of the night bonus however due to Dana White not being happy with Anthony Johnson, they did not get it. He was not happy about it but he understood Dana’s position because rewarding Johnson would have set a bad example.

- Referee Mario Yamasaki was raked over the coals by fans last week when fighter Erick Silva destroyed fighter Carlo Prater in 29 SECONDS at UFC 142 because when he stopped the fight, everyone assumed it was because Silva won however Yamasaki ruled that Silva was disqualified for illegal blows to the back of the head. Joe Rogan, when in the ring to conduct interviews, actually pulled Yamasaki in to view the replay. The replay showed that they were legal and legit shots and only one of them hit the back of Prater’s head. Normally, if an errant shot hits the back of the head of an opponent, the referee will warn or take a point, not DQ. Dana White following the fight provided Silva with the win bonus even though he officially lost.

- UFC is planning on having the next Brazil show be a HUGE one. The idea is for the show to take place on June 16th from a stadium in San Paulo and have the two finals from The Ultimate Fighter Brazil as well as the Anderson Silva Middleweight title defense vs. the winner of Sonnen vs. Bisping as well as the two coaches of TUF Brazil (Vitor Belfort & Wanderlei Silva). That is a good card.

- UFC Fighter Kenny Florian announced that it is likely he will be forced to retire from Mixed Martial Arts competition due to a recurring back injury. He has a lumber herniated disk and has had 3 separate doctors view him, ALL giving the same diagnosis, his time in the octagon is up. Florian will begin his second job (and likely full time job after retirement) this weekend as the lead announcer with Jon Anik for the FX show tomorrow night.

- UFC changed their round policy late last week when they announced that unless it is a title fight, UFC on FX and UFC on Fuel main events will only be 3 rounds. 5 round non-title main events are being reserved for Fox and PPV.

- Dana White told Jim Rome in an interview that Brock Lesnar retired because he “wasn’t good enough”. True story. White states that when he and Lesnar spoke following the loss to Alistair Overeem, Lesnar said that he was at 100% and hasn’t felt this good in years. He had a great camp, no side effects from his intestinal surgery and he was roaring to go. Then when he lost to Overeem, he realized that Overeem was so much better than him in the octagon and it was time to call it quits. WOW.

- George St. Pierre is planning his return to the Octagon for November 2012. He believes he can start heavy training in July. He is going to fight the winner of the Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz Interim Welterweight Title fight.

- Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is going to appeal her one-year suspension at a hearing to be held in April.

- Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal tested positive for anabolic steroids (Drostanolone) following his January 7th TKO victory over Lorenz Larkin. Mo has immediately denied this claim and says he is as shocked as anyone by this claim. They are planning on testing his second sample and should he fail, he will be suspended for one year. Drostanolone is used primarily by body builders for weight cutting. Not a good look for King Mo.

- And what is likely a direct response to the above; UFC announced that effective immediately, all new fighters to the UFC promotion are subject to pre-contract signing drug testing for performance enhancing drugs.

- King Mo’s drug test failure presented the perfect opportunity for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to comment. Rampage has dealt with a lot of negative comments from Mo over the past few months with Mo verbally bashing him and claiming he would beat Jackson. Jackson basically called it karma and said that it is a sad case of a man blatantly cheating to get an advantage.

- Frank Mir PRANKS a motion capture designer for the new UFC video game. Hilarious.

- Gina Carano’s movie “Haywire” which is released tomorrow is getting very favorable reviews as is Carano. If the movie does well, it will open a BIG DOOR for Carano.

UFC on FX is TONIGHT from Nashville Tennessee and the line-up is as follows:

  • Melvin Guillard vs. Jim Miller
  • Duage Ludwig vs. Josh Neer
  • Pat Barry vs. Christian Morecraft

  • Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis
  • Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping
  • Demian Maia vs. Chris Weidman

  • INTERIM WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz
  • Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Roy Nelson
  • Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier

  • Diego Sanchez vs, Jake Ellenberger
  • Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman
  • Jonathan Brookins vs. Rani Yahya

  • LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Ben Henderson

  • Jake Shields vs. Yoshiro Akiyama
  • Joe Lauzon vs. Anthony Pettis
  • Chieck Kongo vs. Mark Hunt

  • Sarah Kaufman vs. Alexis Davis

- The Los Angeles City Council voted successfully this week to have all adult film stars wear condoms when performing. The measure now needs approval from the mayor of Los Angeles to pass. The law states that LA will deny filming permits to production companies that do not show proof of compliance. My guess? LA will NO LONGER BE the porn capital of the United States. That is going to be a fact. Steve Hirsch (owner of Vivid Video) basically said this when asked about the law. I understand the importance of condoms in real life but the fact is, it ruins the fantasy of porn. Plain and simple. You cannot force upon consumers a product that they are not interested in purchasing. Can you imagine the government telling McDonalds that they can no longer sell Big Macs and have to sell Tofu Burgers instead? Same concept. You can’t force people to watch condom filled porn if we don’t want to watch that.
