Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It's Friday!!!!!

Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled “Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy.

MATT NOTE: Hey all, before you get into my awesomeness this week, I just wanted to drop you all a quick note asking if you haven't done so already, JOIN WWI'S FACEBOOK FAN PAGE!!! It is another great way to find out the latest happenings of World Wrestling Insanity, only this time, through Facebook. It's almost as awesome as I am!!!

1) WWE News and Notes

- FYI...tonight pick a channel, any channel. Doesn't matter because all channels are going to be tuned into the "George Clooney and Friends Haiti Relief Telethon". Due to this, Smackdown will air at later times than normal. So check with your local My network affiliate to see when it airs. I think it is 11:30 pm ET in New York.

- Very surprised that WWE decided to go without Bret Hart on RAW this past week. I understand why it was done, especially since you don’t want to “blow your load” too fast but still, expected him to be there. Since Vince is going to “call him out” next week, I think we won’t see him until after the Rumble

- The Hart Family DVD is expected to be released on April 6th. It is titled, “Hart and Soul: The Hart Family Anthology”

- Taker vs. Shawn is going to be awesome. Their face to face confrontation was fantastic. I just hope that Taker can hold out physically until Mania because by all accounts, his surgically replaced hip is shot to hell right now. That’s what you get for wrestling on it 5 months after having it placed. My god-brother had his hip replaced and wasn’t 100% in 5 months, let alone taking bumps and running on it.

- With all the talk about WWE needing to make new stars, I don’t understand why their staff doesn’t look in the mirror? All of the GOLDEN angles they have done in the past few years (Shawn/Jericho, Jericho/Mysterio, Orton/McMahon Family, Shawn/Taker, Bret/Vince) is all done by veterans from the 90’s who are basically given freedom when it comes time to cut promo’s and build angles. The entire opening segment was fantastic. First between Vince/Taker and then between Taker/Shawn.

- Don Johnson and John Heder were completely fine as guest hosts. Johnson didn’t do much and Heder was a pretty decent heel. Just for the record though, they barely plugged their movie. Not that it is a bad thing that they didn’t cause I could care less and don’t plan on seeing it. I just figured they would have rammed it down our throats. Perfectly acceptable as hosts.

- Cena is working through back and neck problems stemming from his neck surgery from a few years back that kept him out of the ring for like a month. Definitely not a good thing and once again proves to WWE management that if you need neck surgery, you need fusion surgery. Unless your neck is legit broken like Austin, you can have fusion surgery and sit out a year. You’ll come back as good as new like “He Who Shall Not Be Named”, Edge and Rhino. Austin was the exception cause his neck was broken.

- The Rock recently confirmed that he was scheduled to host the January 11th RAW and that he was willing but he had to be in Mexico per his movie studio to do promotion for the “Tooth Fairy”. He said he is thisclose to coming to a deal to host RAW. Most likely by the summer sometime.

- According to Bryan Alvarez , the finish that was botched during the Randy Orton/Kofi Kingston match was that Orton was supposed to go for the punt kick, Kingston was supposed to dodge it and go for the “Trouble In Paradise”, miss it and get RKO’d for the pin. By getting up early, he messed it up and they had to audible the finish which visibly pissed Orton off.

- And since we are on the subject of tantrums, did anyone catch Shawn’s tantrum when someone f*cked up after the tag match and either didn’t cue up Cena’s music in time or Cena came out late? LOL. Some things never change.

- Edge is more than likely going to be in the Royal Rumble as a surprise entrant. If not in the match itself, should be back in order to kick off his angle to feud with Chris Jericho for their Mania match. Fantastic news.

- One punch. That is all it took to completely remove any credibility that MVP may have gained in last week’s segment with Miz. ONE F’N BIG SHOW PUNCH and MVP looked like a complete tool.

- Just saw last week’s ECW. Not for nothing but when Goldust is motivated, HE CAN WORK. He looked good out there from a “work-rate” standpoint.

- Bye-bye Eric Escobar. He has been future endeavored. Sad but not for nothing, when you can’t get over as a heel with Vickie Guerrero in your corner, chances are you are NOT going to get over period. He was given a prime opportunity that a lot of newer guys would love and he basically couldn’t deliver. Mind you it could be a case of being rushed to the main roster way too soon but still, he had a great chance and just didn’t have “it”.

- If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to see or hear it, does it make a sound? That is the same question I have about Christian matches on ECW. He has been having damn good matches for months now but no one really knows it because, well, no one watches.

- Jerry Springer has been tapped to host the February 15th RAW.

- FCW’s Serena Deeb debuts tonight on Smackdown as a new “convert” to CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society. She is talented from what I hear. Her name going forward will be Mia Mancini and she will be accompanying Punk and Gallows as part of their entourage. For anyone who knows Punk personally, putting him with a hot diva is probably not the best idea. LOL.

- Congrats to Ken Doane (Kenny Dykstra) for making it onto the Cindy Margolis reality show “Seducing Cindy”.

- Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson has stated in several interviews this week that he will definitely be back to WWE to host RAW. It isn't a matter of IF but more of a matter of WHEN.

- Speaking of, Johnson was at ESPN hyping his new "Tooth Fairy" movie and ended up running into an old friend of his. CHECK IT.

2) WWE ROYAL RUMBLE is on January 31, 2010 from Atlanta GA and the lineup is as follows:

  • WORLD TITLE: Undertaker © vs. Rey Mysterio
  • WWE TITLE: Sheamus © vs. Randy Orton
  • ECW TITLE: Christian © vs. Ezekial Jackson
  • ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: John Cena, HHH, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, Ted DiBiase, Cody Rhodes, Kofi Kingston, Miz, MVP, Jack Swagger, Santino Marella, Carlito, Mark Henry, Evan Bourne, Shelton Benjamin, William Regal, Yoshi Tatsu, Zack Ryder, The Hurricane
  • That’s 19 names confirmed. With Smackdown airing tonight, I fully expect Batista, Chris Jericho, CM Punk, Matt Hardy, Finlay, Kane. That leaves 2 open spots which mean limited surprises. 99.0% chance that Edge is one of the two surprises so that leaves one spot open. Rob Van Dam would make a great surprise. So would Booker T. They still have some roster guys not on the card so if worse comes to worse; Chris Masters or someone like Regal could fill in if they can’t get a surprise name.

3) TENTATIVE WRESTLEMANIA 26 LINE-UP ACCORDING TO ME

  • WORLD TITLE: Undertaker © vs. Shawn Michaels (99.9% probable)
  • STREET FIGHT: Bret “Hitman” Hart vs. Vince McMahon (99.9% probable)
  • Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase (99.9% probable)
  • Edge vs. Chris Jericho (99.9% probable)
  • MASK VS. HAIR: Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
  • TENTATIVE WWE TITLE: Sheamus © vs. HHH (99.9% probable, may not be for the title)
  • TENTATIVE WWE TITLE: John Cena ©??? Vs. Batista (99.9% probable, may not be for the title)
  • Now there are still some main players without a match. Assumption is that Kofi Kingston and probably the usual ladder match suspects of Christian, Matt Hardy, Kane and Shelton Benjamin will be in MITB.
  • Where Big Show is left is beyond me?

4) TNA News and Notes

- Applause to Awesome Kong for re-defining the term “TNA Knockout”. Greatest story I heard all year.

- Bye-bye six-sided ring. Hogan and Bischoff have brought back the traditional ring even though at Genesis, the Orlando crowd broke out into a “WE WANT SIX SIDES” chant. Hilarious.

- Even more hilarious is that Hogan said that the six-sided ring was a playpen. That man is GOLD.

- AJ Styles defeated Kurt Angle at the GENESIS PPV with the stipulation that Angle would NEVER get a title shot again as long as AJ is champion. So at the Impact tapings on Monday, want to guess what the main event was? If you said AJ Styles defending the TNA Title against Kurt Angle then YOU WIN!!!!

- Bait and switching isn’t a good thing. Sometimes it is a necessity though. Especially in the Lashley situation since he is scheduled to fight for Strikeforce in two weeks. Having him wrestle and risk injury is a negative so I understand why he was pulled from his match. But……HOW THE F*CK DO YOU BAIT AND SWITCH TWICE IN THE SAME SHOW??? There is absolutely no good reason to pull Scott Hall from the tag team match against Beer Money. Especially since I’m sure the announcement of he and Nash teaming up had to have caused some additional buys from longtime fans. Sure Waltman is the better worker but people PAID to see Hall and Nash team up. Mind boggling.

- The word given by management is that Hall had a groin injury. The word from the locker room is that Hall is out of shape. Either way, still bait and switch. Hall and Waltman are not long for TNA. I fully expect them to be gone soon.

- Samoa Joe lost CLEAN last week to Desmond Wolfe. No interference, nothing. A clean, decisive win by the former Nigel McGuinness. Then, he is not booked on the Genesis PPV. First PPV he missed since joining the company. Then, he isn’t booked on this week’s Impact. Now according to spoilers, he will have an impact (no pun intended) on next week’s show. But still. WTF?

- Anyone seen JEFF HARDY ? I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but if I scored a MAJOR NAME like Hardy for my company, he’d definitely be at the Genesis PPV and the subsequent 3 television tapings following it!!!!! TNA has taped all the way up to February 11th and not one single sign of Hardy being on television. Something smells fishy to me.

- Ken Anderson (formerly Mr. Kennedy Kennedy of WWE Fame) is the name that will help TNA overtake WWE? Really? I mean come on now, really?

- Even more mind boggling to me that Ken Anderson debuted at Genesis WITHOUT A CONTRACT!!!! It’s as if it’s Groundhog Day in TNA!!!! Anderson is working on a per night deal in order to try and break into acting. So basically, if WWE wanted to come in and scoop him up, they could. On top of that, he just beat Abyss on PPV. WTF!!!

- Speaking of Abyss, in a recent interview with him he noted that he was a marketing director and in his last year of that job, he made $70,000. After he quit to become a pro wrestler, in his first year of wrestling he made a whopping $9,600. WOW.

- Eric Bischoff is GOLD. WWE really dropped the ball with him. He was someone who could have continued to play the authority figure for years. I will never understand why they let him go.

- Good idea to book Lashley as a heel with Kristal doing the talking for him. Also good to book him as an MMA star that kicks ass and thinks he is too big for TNA. NOT A GOOD idea to have him get “beat up” backstage by Abyss and knocked out by a shot with some sort of keyboard that he obviously puts his hand up before getting hit. LAME.

- Karen Angle accompanied Jeff Jarrett to television this week and is more than likely going to return as an on air character soon.

- Brian Kendrick debuted at Genesis.

- Ric Flair finally cut a promo. The best promo man in wrestling history, playing a heel for the first time in forever and he FINALLY cuts a promo after appearing on 2 previous shows.

- Where is Scott Steiner? He has history with both Hogan and Bischoff. Book him!!!!

- Jeremy Borash is no longer the backstage announcer. Now personally, I do not like Borash. We met once and he kind of rubbed me the wrong way. At a later date, I tried to reach out to him about something and he blew me off. But that isn’t the point. While I don’t like Borash personally, I do think he is damn good at his job and to sideline him in favor of Bubba the Love Sponge is retardness at its finest. I don’t get it as it makes no sense why you would replace someone who is good at his job with someone who is completely clueless. Even if it is just an angle (which it will turn into but Bischoff legit doesn’t want Borash around although this is going to turn into the Jarrett/Hogan angle), it is still dumb.

- Speaking of Bubba, he is in some sh*t due to him saying “F*CK HAITI” on his Twitter account. Amazing that TNA would remove JB from television for this jerkoff. He’s up in arms about everything going on backstage too because he is a fair-weather fan. He has no idea about what happens backstage and doesn’t get the whole politics and backstabbing thing. Apparently it is “turning him off” to the business as he is constantly complaining about it on his Twitter and blog pages. HAHA. I find this so funny on so many levels. If he was a true fan, he’d know about all of this.

- New regime huh? Can any supporter of the new regime explain why Samoa Joe was not on this PPV? Why did Daniels job to Morley?

- Let me preface by saying that I like Sean Morley. He is a damn good worker and his being typecast as “the porn star” completely ruined his career. He had a chance at being a main event talent and his start/stop pushes in WWE f*cked that all up. His Chief Morley gimmick was good stuff and then being brought back as Val Venis after an injury blew that to hell. That being said, his match with Daniels was lackluster. He said it was due to flying over night and he was jet lagged, etc. Whatever. It sucked and that was that. What I didn’t like was the fact that the fans sh*tted all over him and Daniels by literally TURNING THEIR BACKS ON THE MATCH. I don’t care how much you think a match sucks that is complete and utter disrespect. You don’t like someone? Boo them. That’s your right. But these guys put their bodies on the line day in and day out for our entertainment. Turning your back on a match is a slap in the face to not only the performers but to the business in general and I genuinely feel bad for Morley because he is a damn good worker who deserves better.

- Funny stuff from Traci Brooks, Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian. LOL .

- ODB popped an implant. With all of the implants that have been popped, I’m starting to wonder if maybe implants aren’t made for wrestling.

- WWI’s own Orlando Jordan is getting a push. Now while I am all for him having a job and definitely thinks he can contribute (I was a fan of his in JBL’s cabinet), I don’t understand why in the world would they sacrifice D’Angelo Dinero for him. WTF?

- New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Kazuchika Okada will be debuting soon.

- Alyssa Flash has apparently received her release from TNA. Hopefully WWE scoops her up as she is talented.

- Awesome Kong has also requested her release. No word on whether or not it was granted but if she does, WWE will definitely scoop her up and build her for a match with Beth Phoenix.

5) Ring of Honor/DGUSA/EVOLVE/Independent News and Notes

- ROH has announced the creation of the ROH World Television Championship. They plan on holding an 8 man tournament beginning on February 5th to crown the champion. The primary purpose is to have a title that will be defended on the HD Net show.

- I did not see EVOLE but from what I have heard, there was A LOT more positive than negative. It was basically trial an error with EVOLE going for an MMA type of feel including post match interviews in the ring with the winners and emphasis on the win/loss record.

- There was some difference between EVOLE and other independent promotions including generic entrance music for everyone. That kind of stood out both positively and negatively. The positive is that it is very reminiscent of early UFC where everyone had the same song. The negative is that in the future, it is going to take away from creating new stars. Fans associate entrance music to wrestlers. Some fans come to see their favorite stars and hearing their songs get fans hyped for an upcoming match. Take a look at ROH for example. Fans would go apesh*t for Samoa Joe’s “The Champ is Here” or American Dragon’s “Final Countdown” or CM Punk’s “Misera Cantare”. They sang and played along to the entrance. It helps the crowd.

- The EVOLE crowd was estimated at 600+ which is definitely a successful first showing. Given time to develop and get a lot of the newcomers as well as the concept and I think we may have a winner here.

- JUST ADDED to this weeken’s JAPW Anniversary show: The Briscoes vs. Teddy Hart & Jack Evans!!!

- Milano Collection AT has retired from professional wrestling. He was a talented individual

- WSU (Woman’s Superstars Unleashed) has their 3rd Anniversary show on March 6th and it looks to be pretty awesome. For all of you out there who enjoy Women’s wrestling, you should give it a try.

6) MMA News and Notes

- Brock Lesnar has been declared “a medical miracle” by doctors as a recent check up has found absolutely NO SIGN of his diverticulitis and he has been medically cleared to resume training. After losing 40 pounds, he has regained 30 of those pounds in the gym and feels fantastic. The goal now is to get him in a shape for a summer fight (probably UFC’s Boston debut) against the winner of the Interim Heavyweight Title match between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir. (Hopefully Mir because that would be a HUGE rematch between him and Lesnar).

- You can hear Brock discuss his health HERE .

- Dana White hates boxing. He seriously does. UFC 113 might have to move from their advertised 5/1 date in Montreal to 5/8 due to the possible Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight. He already moved the 3/13 card to accommodate the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight which has since fallen through.

- UFC is looking at Kimbo Slice’s next fight to take place at UFC 113 vs. Matt Mitrione in Montreal.

- TUF Winner Roy Nelson will be fighting on the March 31st Spike TV Fight Night against Stefan Struve.

- NY Governor David Patterson announced during his annual budget meeting that he is planning on pushing for the 13 year ban on MMA in New York to be lifted. With over 40 states allowing MMA and reaping the financial benefits of it being allowed, he feels that a regulated MMA event in NY would be a big boost to the economy. FYI, he is right. Should the bill pass NY legislation, (which would take up to 6 months), a UFC event in NY could take place in November or December of 2010. More than likely at Madison Square Garden.

- Last week I wrote about the passing of Bob Shamrock, the adoptive father of both Ken and Frank Shamrock. I want to clarify for those readers who are new to MMA and may not know this but Ken and Frank are not blood related. Yes, I know they look almost exactly alike but they are in no way related by blood. Both were taken in by Bob Shamrock who ran a group home. Both were very troubled youths and on a bad path and Bob Shamrock helped them (along with MANY others), get their lives in order.

- Hershel Walker took his MMA physical and apparently, the 48 year old Walker has the physical heart of a 24 year old. WOW.

- For all the hate he gets, Floyd Mayweather is always looking for the “big” fight. Since the Pacquiao fight is off, (Pac is fighting Joshua Clottey), apparently Floyd is going to work to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley instead. Mosley was scheduled to fight Andre Berto but Berto is Haitian and is distracted by the chaos from the earthquake and has asked for the fight to be cancelled so he can help with rescue efforts.

- Even though he got his ass handed to him last month in a first round knockout, Roy Jones Jr. is not hanging up the gloves and he is still going to go ahead with his WAY LONG overdue fight with Bernard Hopkins on April 17th. Jones will be knocked out again. Hopefully he will retire.

- Bobby Lashley has been twisting in the wind in regards to his first Strikeforce opponent. His first opponent was removed from consideration by the Florida State Athletic Commission due to lack of skill. His second opponent cancelled on him. He now has one week for an opponent to be named. Now while I am sure he is going to be thrown a “journeyman” with limited talent, it is definitely not going to be a cakewalk since it is hard to prep for someone with only a week’s time.

UFC 109 is on February 6, 2010 from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman
  • Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
  • Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
  • Mike Swick vs. Paul Thiago
  • Rolles Gracie vs. Mostapha Al Turk
  • Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller

UFC 110 is on February 21, 2010 from Sydney Australia and the line-up is as follows:

  • Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria vs. Cain Velasquez
  • Wanderlei Silva vs. Michael Bisping
  • Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic vs. Ben Rothwell
  • Keith Jardine vs. Ryan Bader
  • Joe Stevenson vs. George Sotiropoulos

UFC 111 is on March 27, 2010 from Newark NJ and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin
  • WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: George St. Pierre © vs. Dan Hardy
  • Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
  • Phil Baroni vs. Marcus Davis

- KIM KARDASHIAN SUCKING !!!!!

- Former MLB Baseball player Jose Offerman was BANNED for LIFE from the Dominican League for THIS . He should be banned from ALL SPORTS. Not because he tried to punch an umpire but more because he was 3 inches from his face and the umpire didn’t see the punch coming yet he completely MISSED. WTF?

- But….since Conan is still on the air, at least until tonight, he figures that NBC still has to pay for any bit/sketch/skit he has. So….on Wednesday he unveiled the BUGATTI MOUSE . Just watch the skit to understand. LOL.

- Definitely not impressed with 24’s start so far. The casting is definitely suspect. Not a good first impression for new viewers. Hopefully they clean it up some over the next few weeks.
