T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #143

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE: GO GIANTS!!!! SuperBowl Sunday is in two days!!!! LET’S GO BIG BLUE!!!!!

CLUB WWI NEWS: If you missed it, last week the always controversial Paul Roma was back and he absolutely discussed the fact that the Four Horsemen are getting inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Did you think he wouldn’t mention it? To find out what he said, you need to GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes

- Sheamus? Um…ok. I always said Sheamus has “IT” so let’s see where they go with it from here. It was definitely a surprise. I am hoping they strap the rocket to his back and let him fly rather than a start/stop push.

- The WWE Website is pointing out that should Daniel Bryan be champion at Wrestlemania this year and if Sheamus challenges him for the title, it will mark exactly a year since Bryan vs. Sheamus was bumped from the last Mania card due to time constraints and turned into a dark match. So they would have gone from not having a match at Mania at all to main eventing Mania this year. That is a good thing for both men.

- Speaking of Bryan, WWE held his title defense to 9-minutes due to the limited ability of Mark Henry. Henry is battling both a torn groin and hyper-extended knee. His mobility is limited and he is in pain but is working through the injuries. If I were WWE, I would hold him out until Mania. He needs to heal. I don’t understand why they are allowing him to work through the injuries. Especially if they still have plans on pushing him as a main event heel.

- The little girl who ran from Big Show when he was giving her the hat was Alanna Orton a.k.a. Randy Orton’s daughter.

- Drew McIntyre was fired on Smackdown last week but wrestled on the Royal Rumble PPV. What are the odds he is fired tonight on Smackdown? Why is this still a storyline?

- Was that real heat between Beth Phoenix and one of the Bellas? Phoenix look like she was legit pissed when she tagged one of the Bellas before the finish and the Bella who got slapped looked lost as if she wasn’t expecting it. Anyone know?

- For those wondering, the Cena vs. Kane storyline was expanded so that the blow off can take place at the Elimination Chamber PPV. The reason for this is that The Rock will not be back until after the PPV so they have to kill time between now and then.

- Just because I am explaining why WWE did what they did, does not mean I agree with it. Cena/Kane/Ryder is still the most abysmal storyline WWE has done in a LONG time. Ugh.

- Kudos to Eve for letting out real tears when Ryder was “killed” by Kane. Good acting job.

- Kane has obviously never pushed a wheel chair before. Man that was brutal to watch. PS – Why was Zack purposely holding his feet off the ground when being wheeled? Wouldn’t it make sense for him to let them fall so that Kane would have even more trouble pushing him?

- I can watch Punk vs. Ziggler all day. Boy can those guys put on a match.

- Was it just me or did the Rumble match itself seem “weak”? No big surprises, lacked major “star power” and not for nothing but Cole being in the Rumble was just dumb. How many WWE Superstars that did not get a pay day for the Rumble do you think were happy that they were bumped for Cole and Kharma?

- How is that roster depth coming along too? Last year was “the biggest Rumble match EVER” with 41 participants and this year they need to put 3 announcers, 2 former wrestlers (Duggan and Road Dog) a manager (Ricardo Rodriquez) and Kharma in the match just to get to 30. WTF?

- Do not get me wrong though, I am happy Kharma is back. She did an excellent job of keeping her personal life, personal. I did not hear one peep about her since she was gone. She had the baby on December 31st, a boy named Jamie.

- Kharma vs. Beth Phoenix at Mania? Hope so.

- Ricardo Rodriquez was AWESOME.

- Mr. Socko vs. the Cobra? That was 100% entertainment.

- The Great Khali? Again? I thought he wasn’t under contract anymore. Why is he back?

- Kofi Kingston’s hand stand walking spot was incredible. One of, if not the most impressive thing I have seen in the Rumble. It goes hand in hand with the John Morrison Parkour spot from last year.

- Let me preface by saying that I am a Mick Foley fan. He has always been one of the greatest to me from his WCW days. Yes, I have followed Foley and liked him for that long. That being said, I think he needs to hang it up. It is real sad and uncomfortable to watch him now. He moves so slowly and gingerly around the ring. I cannot bear to see him like this.

- “Oh you didn’t know? My ass just ATE somebody!!!!!” Yeah, RoadDogg was in the Royal Rumble and he obviously has stopped training since he left TNA. Why is it that agents retire and suddenly stop hitting a gym? Weird. Anyway, he was good for nostalgia purposes and entertaining. Not a bad surprise entrant.

- And the internet exploded during RAW. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan on WWE television. You know how many hardcore wrestling fans creamed their pants over that match? BTW, did anyone catch the old ROH “Code of Honor” handshake to start the match? GOLD.

- You notice how I did not complain about the fact that it was given away on free TV? That is because it is not going to ever be a money making program. Daniel Bryan, even though he is World Champion, is not treated like a main event level star. If he was, I’d be upset. But my feeling is that once he loses the title (possibly as soon as Elimination Chamber) then it is right back to the mid-card for him ala Jack Swagger. If they gave away Punk vs. Jericho on free television before Mania then that would be absurd.

- Is it just me or is the Chris Jericho return losing steam? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed that he did a run in during the Punk/Bryan match and is setting up for a Punk feud. But he no longer feels like something special. He is just another guy already and it is way too soon for him to be one.

- Dolph Ziggler is on the cusp of being a main eventer. He is so close. Right there on the edge. So why isn’t he being protected by booking? Sure Randy Orton is a bigger star than he is, but since that is the case, why put him in a match with Orton? Orton could have easily beaten someone else on the roster. Ziggler shouldn’t job on clean television the day after losing literally 4 times to CM Punk. That is excess.

- William Regal: “I have daughters to be exact. Conjoined twins. I keep them locked in the attic.” I have the faintest clue as to how John Laurinaitis or Regal himself did not burst out into laughter. That was hilarious.

- Good celebrity induction into the Hall of Fame with Mike Tyson. Mike is definitely more deserving than Drew Carey that is for sure. I also know that it will be a travesty if anyone other than “Stone Cold” Steve Austin inducts him. It has to be Steve.

- The Undertaker is back and he looks to be in good shape. A year off will do that to you I guess. While I have been hearing some complaints from fans about Taker vs. HHH 2, I am all for it. Neither man has anything to lose. Both have been out of action for a long time (minus the two HHH matches this year) and both can go. I think they are going to try to top last years match and given their ability, I think they will succeed.

- If you didn’t notice/realize, Taker was wearing a wig. If you remember, he was bald just 6 months ago. NO WAY his hair grew back that fast. The assumption is that he is going to wear a wig until Mania and hopefully get his hair long enough for some extensions to be placed in. I am not exactly sure why he shaved his head especially since he knew he was coming back for Mania.

- Triple H is being advertised locally for all WWE RAW’s going forward between now and Wrestlemania. Not sure if this is going to be the case but it is expected that he is going to be on meaning that his storyline with John Laurinaitis is not over as well as the build to his Mania match.

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is scheduled for the February 27th RAW in Portland Oregon, the March 5th RAW in Boston, the March 12th RAW in Cleveland and the March 26th RAW in Atlanta which is the “go-home” show for Wrestlemania. Unfortunately I am getting the feeling that he is going to end up wrestling a match on RAW before Mania. That is just too many consecutive appearances for it not to happen. WWE is going to screw it up. UGH.

- The Rock VIDEO PACKAGE from the Royal Rumble. AWESOMENESS.

- The Rock also confirmed via his Twitter that he will begin filming the sequel to Fast Five in June. I do believe that Vin Diesel confirmed not too long ago that they are doing 6 and 7 although I am not sure if they are filming both or just begun writing 7. They did get green lit for it based on the profits that Five did.

- I still do not have confirmation as to what Natalya did but it is obvious that it was something because last week on Smackdown, in a backstage segment with Teddy Long and Aksana, it was made to appear that Nattie passed gas. The entire segment was made for that purpose. This was NOT a one time occurrence and it is set to continue going forward. So one half of the Divas of Doom a.k.a. Pin Up Strong is set to be a farter. Isn’t that grand?

- In news that will make many Jim Ross fans cringe, Ross confirmed that he is scheduled to be in attendance on RAW Monday from Oklahoma City. 9 times out of 10 that means he is going to be embarrassed in some way.

- The current plan being discussed for Money in the Bank this year at Mania is to have all the competitors in the match be a former WWE or World Champion. That would mean people like Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio Mark Henry, Christian, Kane, Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton, etc. Orton was a name given meaning they could in fact be keeping the World title on Daniel Bryan until Mania.

- If you are wondering about Evan Bourne, apparently he is in WWE sponsored rehab while under suspension.

- WWE has made a change in the creative department. They have hired a former executive at Warner Brothers named Eric Pankowski and named him Senior Vice President of Creative and Development. He reports directly to Stephanie McMahon and he will be in “charge of all television and creative development including Reality and children’s programming as well as overseeing the WWE writing team and the sale of programming to networks, studios and other distributions.” This sounds like he is taking a lot off of Stephanie McMahon’s plate. This hiring is also a Stephanie move to try and counter act the gaining of power by Kevin Dunn with the WWE Network. Dunn, more than anyone has had Vince’s ear as of late when it comes to the network and new programming.

- With the delay of the Network until the fall and WWE set to begin filming on Legends House, the talk is that Legends House will NOT be a WWE Network show (season 1 anyway) and will in fact end up airing on the SyFy Network. That is pretty cool news.

- David Otunga successfully won a lawsuit in court for a man who claimed he was wrongfully terminated and denied unemployment benefits. Otunga won and the man can now claim them. This was in New York and Otunga worked the case for free. No word on whether the man was a friend or not however Otunga likely took the case because I believe it is required for an attorney in order to practice law in the state that he passed a bar exam in to practice law during the calendar year.

- Booker T announced this week that he has an autobiography coming out in September 2012. “Booker T: From Prison to Promise” is set to be released on September 1st and will chronicle Booker’s early childhood prison stint for armed robbery to his wrestling career to today. If told truthfully, it should be a fantastic read.

- Apparently the “Bragging Rights” PPV is no more.

- CM Punk confirmed that WWE has begun production on a DVD on his career. No word on whether WWE will license Ring of Honor footage for it or interview those who worked there.

- PS – someone asked me why WWE is launching a YouTube channel when they are launching a network in 2012. The reason is that YouTube approached WWE for original content and is paying WWE $1,000,000.00 a year to create a channel. So that answers your question.

- Former WWE star John Morrison decided not to tempt fate and will be making appearances on the independent scene using his real name John Hennigan. Not sure if WWE sent a cease and desist but he isn’t going to fight for the Morrison name.

- Again, not posting it all here but Chyna has been going on EPIC rants on WWE specifically X-Pac, HHH and Vince McMahon. If you are into train wrecks then go to her Twitter and check them out. INSANITY!!!

- Episode 50 of “ Z! True Long Island Story

WWE Elimination Chamber PPV is on Sunday, February 19th from Milwaukee Wisconsin and the line-up is as follows: (INCLUDES SPOILERS)

  • WWE TITLE: Elimination Chamber match: CM Punk © vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Chris Jericho vs. The Miz vs. R-Truth vs. Kofi Kingston
  • WORLD TITLE: Elimination Chamber match: Daniel Bryan © vs. Randy Orton vs. Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Wade Barrett vs. The Great Khali (not a typo)
  • John Cena vs. Kane

2012 WWE Hall of Fame takes place on Saturday, March 31st from Miami Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • Edge (likely to be inducted by Christian)
  • The Four Horsemen of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham managed by JJ Dillon (likely to be inducted by Triple H and/or Shawn Michaels)
  • Mil Mascaras (inducted by his real life nephew Alberto Del Rio)
  • “Iron” Mike Tyson (would be shocked if he was inducted by anyone other than “Stone Cold” Steve Austin)
  • Rumored: Yokozuna

- TNA, You got to love them. They recently taped the final two “go-home” shows for the “Against All Odds” PPV in England. Jeff Hardy is scheduled to participate in the main event of that PPV. However, Hardy is nowhere to be found on the final two shows. Why you ask? It is because he is banned from travelling to England due to his recent drug conviction. TNA booked this trip a few weeks ago. Are you telling me that couldn’t have NOT booked this trip and waited to go to England? If they couldn’t, then why didn’t they keep Hardy out of the main event? What logic is that?

- Sting injured his foot on the tour. It was originally though to be a knee injury as an audible was called involving the finish but he tweeted that he does not think it is that bad. Sting stated that when it happened, he thought it was his Achilles which at his age would have effectively ended his career but after visiting a doctor, he was informed that it is a torn fascia. Doctors say he will be out of action for 4-6 weeks but he expected to be back in 3.

- Once again, against doctor’s orders, Hulk Hogan participated in a wrestling match in Nottingham England last week. While he did not take bumps (nor should he ever take one again), he did team with James Storm and Sting to defeat Bobby Roode, Bully Ray and Kurt Angle.

- Sadly TNA did not draw record crowds in England last week. They were expected to break their record high of 8,000+ in attendance but only drew about 7,000.

- Can anyone name me one single person on this earth who tells more tall tales than Hulk Hogan? ANYONE? Hogan’s latest is that before he broke into wrestling, he was a bass player in a band which is a true story. What people do not know is that he was approached by Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and asked to be the bass player for Metallica but he declined. He said this. In another doozy, he claimed that he was originally contacted on three separate occasions to play the lead role in the Academy Award nominated movie the Wrestler but he turned down director Darren Aronofsky due to the fact that it was such a great script and he felt the movie would get unfair criticism since critics do not like him personally. WOW.

- Hogan, also in discussing what up and coming talents we should look out for in TNA in 2012, replied Christopher Daniels. He said that “Daniels is really starting to step out of the mold and into his own”. You know, 41 year old, 19 years in the wrestling industry “up and comer” Christopher Daniels.

- So Mr. Anderson is back and Pope D’Angelo Dinero is gone? WTF? Where do these people go? They are still under contract. Anderson was gone for like 2 months and now Pope has been gone since blowing off his feud with Devon (in an ending that came about a month earlier than it should have.)

- Nothing new on the Flair front other than that TNA will look like total douches if they don’t let him attend the WWE Hall of Fame. So regardless of any lawsuits they may be able to win, they are likely going to let him attend.

- Remember when TNA turned Bobby Roode heel and he won the TNA title from James Storm and then the plan was to keep Storm off TV for a while before brining him back and eventually having the big confrontation between Roode and Storm at Lockdown in April? HAHA!!! Good times. Instead, last night on Impact Roode fought Storm and won. Tremendous.

TNA “Against All Odds PPV is on February 12, 2012 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA WORLD TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. James Storm vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Bully Ray
  • TNA TAG TEAM TITLES: Matt Morgan & Crimson (c) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
  • TNA X-DIVISION TITLE: Austin Aries (c) vs. Alex Shelly
  • TNA KNOCKOUTS TITLE: Gail Kim (c) vs. Tara
  • Kazarian vs. AJ Styles
  • Zema Ion vs. Jesse Sorensen (X-Divsion #1 Contentders Match)

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Former WWE Star “The Godfather” wrestled at the Wrestle Reunion convention in Los Angeles last weekend and he has definitely stepped his “Ho game” up a level. Instead of local strippers, the Godfather was accompanied by independent wrestlers Becky Bayless (formerly Cookie of TNA), Shelly Martinez (Formerly Ariel of WWE and Salinas of TNA), Angel Orsini and Amber O’Neal. Nice group of “hos”. Footage HERE .

- You know, out of all the people I have ever hung out with in professional wrestling in my lifetime, I do not think there is anyone I would like to hang out with more than SHELLY MARTINEZ . She looks like you’ll have a hell of a cool time with her.

- New Japan Pro Wrestling has been sold by parent company Yukes (the video game maker) to Bushiroad (a popular card game company) for $6.5 million dollars.

- Nigel McGuiness is currently working on a documentary on the end of his wrestling career. He is filming while on the road with his retirement tour. I am still holding out hope that he steps into a Ring of Honor ring once more before it is all said and done. He deserves a proper sendoff considering ROH is where he honed his craft. Admittedly I didn’t like him when he made his ROH debut but he absolutely grew as a performer both in character and his in ring skills. Sad that his career has to end so early.

RING OF HONOR returns TOMORROW NIGHT with a television taping to Baltimore Maryland and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH CHAMP: Davey Richards (c) vs. ROH TV CHAMP: Jay Lethal (c)
  • Kyle O’Reilly vs. Michael Elgin
  • TJ Perkins vs. Michael Bennett
  • Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
  • and more….

MMA News and Notes

- Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen did what they were supposed to do and now we are all set with two MEGA PPV main events for 2012. Rashad Evans defeated Phil Davis in the main event of UFC on FOX 2 to gain himself a Light Heavyweight title shot at Champion Jon Jones at the UFC 145 show from Atlanta. Sonnen, by defeating Michael Bisping in a close decision will finally get his rematch vs. Middle Weight Champion Anderson Silva in Brazil in June. Sonnen is the one man who has come closest to defeating Silva for the first time in 11 years when they first fought. Sonnen dominated 4 and a half rounds before slipping up and getting caught by Silva in a submission and being forced to tap out.

- For the record, many people felt Bisping should have won the decision including UFC head honcho Dana White.

- WWE Champion CM Punk did attend the UFC event but was kept off camera. He was at the weigh-ins with Sonnen as well as in Sonnen’s locker room before the fight.

- UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has requested to Dana White to move up to heavyweight following his title defenses vs. Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson in 2012. Dana White has denied his request. Jones is a natural heavyweight and cuts to 205 for his fights. Eventually he is going to find it more and more difficult to cut and will have to move but it is too soon.

- Nick Diaz has stated that if he defeats Carlos Condit this weekend for the interim Welterweight title, he does not plan on fighting again unless it is George St. Pierre. He will not take another welterweight fight until GSP is healed and ready to go. If a big money fight comes along at Middleweight then he will consider it. Otherwise, it is sit and wait.

- In news that is going to piss off UFC haters, the Federal Trade Commission has closed it’s case against UFC and ruled that UFC is NOT a monopoly. No further action is warranted. So UFC is free to continue conducting business as it has in the past.

- Dana White has always been good putting together matches with matchmaker Joe Silva so it is likely that we are going to get a 3rd Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffith match up. Both men are clamoring for it to happen (as they split the two previous fights, both by draws) and it will likely be Ortiz’s final fight in MMA. If Griffith loses, it will likely be his final fight with UFC since he is on the chopping block.

- UFC has officially retired the gladiator’s theme music that starts all PPV shows. Dana White made the announcement this week stating that with the new deal with Fox, they decided to christen new opening music for their shows. This saddens me.

- Not exactly sure what the background story is but apparently MMA manager Ed Soares is sure "shitting the bed" when it comes to his clients. On the heels of UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos parting ways with Ed a few weeks back, work out of Brazil is that current UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo has not parted ways with Soares. Soares has several Brazillian MMA clients still under his roster however with two big names leaving, who is to say that more won't follow. Soares still currently managed current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was well as former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida.

- Former WWE Star Bobby Lashley is pushing to get a fight with M-1 Global vs. Fedor Emelianenko.

UFC 143 is TOMORROW NIGHT from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • INTERIM WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz
  • Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
  • Fabricio Werdum vs. Roy Nelson
  • Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
  • Ed Herman vs. Clifford Starks

UFC ON FUEL is on February 15th from Omaha Nebraska and the line-up is as follows:

  • Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger
  • Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman
  • Jonathan Brookins vs. Rani Yahya
  • Aaron Simpson vs. Ronny Markes

UFC 144 is on February 26th from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows:

  • LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Ben Henderson
  • Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Ryan Bader
  • Jake Shields vs. Yoshiro Akiyama
  • Joe Lauzon vs. Anthony Pettis
  • Chieck Kongo vs. Mark Hunt

STRIKEFORCE: “Tate vs. Rousey” is on March 3rd from Columbus Ohio and the line-up is as follows:

  • WOMEN’s 135lb TITLE: Miesha Tate (c) vs. Ronda Rousey
  • K.J. Noons vs. Josh Thomson
  • Paul Daley vs. Kazuo Misaki
  • Sarah Kaufman vs. Alexis Davis

UFC 145 is on April 21st from Atlanta Georgia and the line-up is as follows:

  • UFC Light Heavyweight title: Jon “Bones” Jones vs. Rashad Evans
  • Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills
  • Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell
  • Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald
  • Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin

UFC on FOX 3 is n May 5th from East Rutherford New Jersey and the line-up is as follows:

  • Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz
  • Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson
  • Dennis Hallman vs. Anthony Ferguson
