WWE News and Notes

- RAW was a solid show this week which was heavy in promos and video packages due to WWE not wanting anyone to get hurt since following the show, the roster was leaving to Abu Dhabi for their first ever tour there. Some good that did them considering both Eve Torres and R-Truth were injured on the show. Thankfully neither were as serious as thought.

- Side Note: No WWE Diva is on the Abu Dhabi tour due to the strict dress code for women there. Only the males from the RAW roster attended.Cena and Kane did do an ANGLE at the press conference.

- Absolutely ZERO John Cena on RAW. That was interesting and unusual to say the least. Cena was in fact in Oklahoma as he wrestled in the dark match main event vs. Kane and confirmed this on his Twitter. So it was a creative decision to keep him off television.

- There was also no Brodus Clay. It is weird because his angle on Smackdown last week was cut from the show. He originally squashed Heath Slater before being attacked by Drew McIntyre. For some reason, WWE removed the angle from the show and then it was scripted in to be featured on RAW Monday but was cut as well. Clay did not wrestle on the Smackdown tapings this week meaning he will be off of 3 consecutive shows.

- Is Drew McIntyre fired or what? What the f*ck was the point of that angle with Long going on for as many weeks as it did without a payoff? I do not get it.

- HHH’s promo to open the show was good and the Undertaker video of him being obsessed with HHH was AWESOME. It was very well done and cool looking package.

- I liked HHH’s explanation for not wanting to wrestle Taker at Mania. Turning it into a respect for Taker’s legacy was a nice touch.

- Daniel Bryan continues to shine in his role as a little weasel World Champion. He is good on the mic and his tactics including bringing out the injured AJ for his match with Big Show was GOLD. The fact that Big Show almost ran her down again and Bryan ended up using that as an excuse to not continue fighting and then claim that if Big Show was able to stop himself then he obviously could have before therefore he ran over AJ on purpose last time was amazing. I want Bryan to be World Champion until the end of time. Sadly I do not think that is happening. Either Bryan or Punk is losing their title at Elimination Chamber. No way do both men walk into Wrestlemania as champion.

- Another neon sign of Bryan and/or Punk not walking into Mania as champion is that Randy Orton is battling Bryan on the main event of Smackdown this week. Unless this is an angle and not a match, I do not see WWE giving away this match if they plan on giving it away as the Mania co-main event.

- The Bryan pushing the fact that he is vegan stuff is actually Bryan’s idea. He decided to incorporate it as a rib on CM Punk because for those who did not know, Punk “stole” the entire Best in the World gimmick/catchphrase from Daniel Bryan’s run as Ring of Honor World Champion. So the entire Bryan being a vegan thing means he is better than you is a play on CM Punk’s ROH “Straight Edge” promos/persona.

- Not sure why Sheamus debuted a new finisher on Smackdown last week (the old Celtic Cross by Finlay) if he wasn’t planning on using it consistently until it gets over with the fans and they become accustomed to it.

- The Punk/Jericho confrontation was exactly what it needed to be. It was also, booking 101. In the 6 way main event, if you watch it again, notice that other than the finish, Punk and Jericho did not interact at all. It is exactly what I have been saying for weeks. In order to build to a PPV main event, you keep the physical contact between the two main eventers to a minimum. Now that Jericho is the last participant in the Elimination Chamber, you can have him steal a cheap win on Punk to win the title/eliminate Punk without having have them working several spots. Either way, Punk coming out to interrupt Jericho and then not say a word was well done.

- Poor R-Truth and now Poor Miz. If you missed it, R-Truth did a DIVE TO THE OUTSIDE of the ring onto Miz. Problem is, Miz completely did not catch him. Did not even attempt to catch him and break his fall. Miz just froze in his tracks and let Truth crash and burn. Truth splattered on the mat and appeared to be DEAD. He had to be helped to the back and was completely out of it and out of the match. The match kind of fell apart after that as audibles had to be called since Truth was involved in other stuff that was supposed to happen.

- Suffice to say, Miz was BURIED when he got backstage as EVERYONE was livid at him and he had nuclear heat. It is one thing in WWE to get buried for minor crap. But WWE management has had a long history of going postal on those who are careless in the ring including going so far enough to release people (see Kenndy, Mr.). Accidents happen and those are forgiven. But when something like what happened on Monday happens, you get heat. This was 100% Miz’s fault. It wasn’t a mistake or bad timing or wrong place/wrong time. Miz froze and Truth paid the price for it. It was a bad deal all around. Apparently Truth is fine. No concussion and no further injury other than being shaken up. Miz, apparently was not so lucky. Miz was already on the WWE sh*t list for whatever reason (some say due to Maryse and the circumstances behind her departure, others say other reasons including the ridiculous one of him being blamed for the poor buyrate of Survivor Series with the Rock’s return, WTF?) Management has felt that Miz has also lost his drive recently. When Miz was a mid card talent and wanting to “break the glass ceiling”, he worked hard and improved all around. Apparently when he was de-pushed, he did not work hard enough to get back to his place. Instead he digressed in the ring and actually got a little worse on the mic. Regardless of the reason, one you get labeled with the stigma of being reckless, that doesn’t fade. Whatever Miz does for the next few months, he is going to be buried. That is a fact. Hopefully he recovers but for right now, all because of Monday, he is not going to get a push anytime soon. It’s sad but that is how WWE works.

- Shane Helms on Miz’s catch: "Wow @mikethemiz Way to puss out on catching Truth on that dive. Geez,"

- Color me impressed. Randy Orton’s RKO on the Great Khali actually looked good. An incredible feat considering we are talking about Khali here and he isn’t the most graceful man on the planet when it comes to showing athleticism.

- I am not sure if it is a WWE mandate or Beth Phoenix taking initiative herself but she has been on a tear in the ring. She is stiffing the hell out of everyone she comes across including the six woman tag match where she legit broke Eve Torres’ nose with a clothesline that nailed Eve RIGHT IN THE FACE. OUCH. Eve sold for a little bit more before making the hot tag and vanishing completely from ringside. The referee gave the dreaded X symbol and other officials escorted Eve to the back for treatment. The closing angle of the show with Kane and Eve backstage was filmed earlier in the day hence why she had no broken nose in the angle.

- As witnessed by Smackdown last week, someone in WWE smartened up and Mark Henry was written off television when he was “suspended indefinitely” by Teddy Long. The reason for this is to keep him off television until he heals his groin and knee injuries.

- John Cena video PACKAGE hyping Mania. FYI…this package and the one on the Rock are going to continue as we head towards Mania. They are not “one and done” packages. The plan, pushed by Kevin Dunn, is to do similar packages going forward like HBO Boxing and UFC do leading into big fights.

- Per WWE.com , the WWE Board of Directors decided to keep John Laurinaitis as interim General Manager of RAW.

- Shawn Michael is confirmed for RAW next week. He is expected to be a part of the Undertaker/HHH storyline.

- The Twitter trash talk between The Rock and John Cena has restarted again as both men are slowly moving into hype mode for their Wrestlemania match. Comment started by the Rock when he was asked when he will be on RAW again by a fan.

"@JohnCena @WWE RAW 2/27. Portland, OR. The night The Rock slaps the feminine napkin out of John Cena. #UWhiningBitch"

"@JohnCena Settle down cowgirl. Your lemon panties are getting bunched up in your lady parts. #HustleLoyaltyVagisil"

- Cena replied with the following: "In Wichita today. Maybe my buddy Dwayne from #Teamfilmit will be here...probably not. But maybe ill be lucky enuff to get a message about how he used to be in WWE and once went to Wichita, and how good it was...u know before he left...and the whatever came back...only to say he was home and never leaving....only to leave again. Bring your boots movie star. Ill see u april 1st. Meanwhile ill do my job... One that I would never leave. The one I love. The one u left. #everyotherdaybesideswrestlemaina. That should hold #Teamfilmit over until the superbowl. But ill leave u with this..I speak fact, not politics. What is Dwayne gonna do....."

"Once again outclassed by #thefakeone man it would be a shame if Dwayne got beat by a guy with a mangina. Hey hollywood what u doin april 9? I know where ill be. Have a nice day Dwayne."

"Another classy response from my fav movie star. Just to make sure..ill pencil u in for RAW. Cause a lot of times u say you'll be there..but e all know how that one ends. And please..keep up the mangina talk..ill flip it into a Tampax deal :) have a nice night Dwayne.’

- Cena is having a new song commissioned by rapper Machine Gun Kelly for Wrestlemania. Not sure if it is just for Mania or will be his theme going forward.

- In addition to the RAW’s mentioned in last week’s column, the Rock is now confirmed for the post Mania RAW in Miami on April 2nd.

- CM Punk is AWESOME part 1,596. At a WWE houseshow this weekend, Punk threw his t-shirt into the crowd ala John Cena. The shirt was almost caught by a kid in the first row but a grown man ended up grabbing it and taking it to his seat. Punk then left the ring, walked across the arena to a merchandise stand and grabbed a Punk t-shirt off the table, walked to the kid in the front row and handed him the shirt. That is class folks.

- Christian is medically cleared to return to the ring. I am hoping that WWE does not wait until after Mania.

- Hopefully this is true as well but Alberto Del Rio is being advertised for tomorrow’s Smackdown Live Event in San Francisco. He is booked to wrestle Sheamus.

- The entire Natalya farting gimmick is retardedness at it’s finest. Also, where the hell is Kharma? By the looks of the angle and where it is going, it appears we are headed to a Beth Phoenix vs. Tamina feud followed by Beth vs. Natalya at Mania. Breaking up Pin-Up Strong is way too soon since they barely did anything and were just stopped dead in their tracks. Plus, a farting gimmick will not turn Nattie into a babyface. She has been very diplomatic about it on her Twitter telling fans that they shouldn’t take everything so seriously but I am 100% sure she is not happy about this gimmick.

- Send prayers out to WWE Hall of Famer “Superstar” Billy Graham. Graham was hospitalized this week for pneumonia and a leg infection. Graham has had a history of medical problems over the years that are life threatening. So much so that he has stopped travelling and can no longer leave the state of Arizona due to needing to be able to get to the hospital should his medical illnesses require it. So checking into a hospital for pneumonia and a leg infection are NOT a good thing. Prepare for the worst.

- Chris Hero has passed his lingering medical tests by WWE and has reported to FCW. He is officially on the WWE roster as his contract is signed. Hero was signed as a singles wrestler. There are no plans for him to team with former partner Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli). Both men were signed by WWE with singles careers in mind. The reason Hero’s signing took so long is because his original WWE medical testing showed elevated testosterone levels. This raises red flags with WWE due to that normally leading to steroid use. Hero has since undergone several forms of testing (which take a long time to complete) and while he still shows elevated levels of testosterone in his system, they were able to prove that the reading was natural and not due to steroid use/abuse.

- WWE is looking to hire a group of independent cruiserweights for the launch of a cruiserweight wrestling show on the new WWE Network when they launch. That has potential to be awesome.

- Congrats to recent ClubWWI.com guest and WWE "super"star Shane “Hurricane” Helms as he wrestled his first match back in over a year in the Philippines last week. Helms had not wrestled in over a year due to injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident that almost ended his life. This match was on the same show that John Hennigan “Morrison” wrestled his first independent match on.

- Dave Batista has been confirmed as one of the main villains in the new Vin Diesel “Chronicles of Riddick” movie that is being launched. This is a very big deal for Batista as it is the most main stream project he is doing to date. Sad thing is though; every day longer he is out of wrestling is one more day he is less likely to return to WWE. It sucks because as I have stated on several occasions, his final few months in WWE were his best months of his career from a talent perspective. His character was hitting on all cylinders as he was the perfect storm of cocky, arrogant, awesome heel and his mic work was never better. Batista has a “ NEW LOOK ” for the movie.

- The Royal Rumble is being pegged at around 250,000 – 285,000 PPV buys which is in range of what it does annually; so no gain or no loss.

- The February 21st Smackdown will air LIVE on SyFy meaning that during that weekend, they will have the Elimination Chamber PPV, Raw and Smackdown all LIVE within a 72 hour period. It is going to suck to be on that writing team considering the hype to Mania starts with Elimination Chamber. 7 hours of live television.

- WWE in an effort to improve house show attendance has decided to make the visual of house shows appear like television tapings. They have upgraded their sets and looks since house shows use to be more plain. They also plan on using almost the same amount of pyro they use on TV to make the shows look more major league.

  • John Cena vs. Kane in an Ambulance Match.

2012 WWE Hall of Fame takes place on Saturday, March 31st from Miami Florida and the line-up is as follows: (SPOILER LINE UP!!!!)

  • Edge (inducted by Christian)
  • The Four Horsemen of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham managed by JJ Dillon (inducted by Triple H and Shawn Michaels)
  • “Iron” Mike Tyson (inducted by“Stone Cold” Steve Austin)
  • Yokozuna (inducted by The Rock)
  • Ron Simmons (inducted by John Bradshaw Layfield)
  • Mil Mascaras (inducted by his real life nephew Alberto Del Rio)

- Sting once again confirmed in a recent interview that he was very close to signing with WWE last year around Mania and stated that he has had several conversations with Vince McMahon over the years and had almost signed about 4 times over his career but he just couldn’t come to terms. He regrets that he never wrestled a Wrestlemania event.

- Hulk Hogan goodie of the week: Hogan in an interview with the Sun in the UK states that he has only exercised his “creative control” clause ONCE in his career when Vince Russo ended up screwing him in WCW by forcing Jeff Jarrett to lay down. He said this. Really. I am assuming with a straight face too.

- Full Interview HERE .

- Per Kurt Angle’s Twitter: “I’m Ready for Olympic trials. I Studied My Competition. Let’s Bring It On. 43 yrs old. Never Done B4. I’m gonna Make History.Deny Naysayers" For the record, I am a naysayer. I would be SHOCKED if he made the Olympic team at his age and with his history of health issues.

- TNA has trademarked the term “Soccer Moms” in relation to a reality TV show project that they are working on. Not really sure if adding additional projects to their plate is the best idea right about now.

- How long has Austin Aries been X-Division champion? I feel like he is so overlooked and under utilized for the promotion and it is only a matter of time before TNA takes the title off of him “just because”. I am hoping that they don’t end up moving him up the card in a more meaningful feud or at least getting better X-Division talents to feud with. Zema Ion? Jesse Sorenson? Really?

- Magnus is developing into a decent middle card talent. While I am 100% against the use of Samoa Joe, I am at least glad that Magnus is working with him as a partner. Hopefully he picks up some things and gets better. He has a great look and is good on the mic and serviceable in the ring. Definitely can improve his work but he isn’t horrible by any means.

- Go home show to Sunday’s PPV last night and no Jeff Hardy to hype the main event match he is in. Unbelievable.

- Bobby Roode got an awesome treat this past week when he received the following tweet from Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson: "I dig your work. Keep moving the crowd and kicking that ass. Tell Bubba his calves still aren't as big as mine."

TNA “Against All Odds PPV is THIS SUNDAY from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA WORLD TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. James Storm vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Bully Ray
  • TNA TAG TEAM TITLES: Matt Morgan & Crimson (c) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
  • TNA X-DIVISION TITLE: Austin Aries (c) vs. Alex Shelly
  • TNA KNOCKOUTS TITLE: Gail Kim (c) vs. Tara
  • Kazarian vs. AJ Styles
  • Zema Ion vs. Jesse Sorensen (X-Divsion #1 Contentders Match)

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Dragon Gate USA has announced that during their Wrestlemania weekend shows, they will have their annual tradition of the Dragon Gate Six Man tag which was a mainstay during their once alliance with Ring of Honor. The Dragon Gate Six Man was voted match of the year on two occasions. Also announced by DGUSA is the first time ever meeting between Low-Ki and Pac.

- Sabu vs. Sami Callihan is also penciled in for the Mania weekend. Sabu is now a part of DGUSA going forward as Gabe Sapolsky has been very pleased with his attitude and work and Sabu has been very helpful backstage as a veteran presence. Sabu is still one of wrestling’s greatest anomalies. The man should absolutely be a millionaire due to the way he innovated a lot of things in his career and sacrificed his body. But poor decisions, refusal to do jobs (likely due to his uncle the Sheik helping him make decisions early in his career) and various other problems that have come due to the physical style he has wrestled has hampered that. But Sabu is absolutely one of the nicest and coolest people I have ever met in wrestling. It is amazing considering you would think he could be a major dickhead if he wanted to be but he has been nothing but cool and kind in the locker room all the times I have shared one with him.

- The ROH 10th Anniversary event in NYC on March 4th will feature a main event of Davey Richards & Kyle O’Reilly vs. Eddie Edwards and Adam Cole as well as the Briscoes defending the tag team titles against The Young Bucks.

- ROH is toying with a cool concept/gimmick match during the Wrestlemania weekend in Miami. On March 30th, Davey Richards will defend the ROH title in a three way vs. Eddie Edwards and Roderick Strong. The gimmick is that Jay Lethal, Michael Elgin and Kevin Steen have all won matches in the “Blind Dynasty” tournament. On 3/31 Lethal/Steen/Elgin are all booked in matches vs. Richards/Edwards/Strong. Thing is, one of those matches will be an ROH title match depending on who wins the match on 3/30. No one knows who the champ is so for example, if Lethal is booked vs. Strong, it is possible that his match will be for the title if Strong wins on 3/30. Same with the other two matches. Cool gimmick if you ask me as it makes matches with no storylines seem more important.

- Do you guys remember when Kevin Steen “left” ROH and he had a major knee injury that required surgery which he never got. Instead he worked through it on the independent scene and I kept saying he needs surgery, should get surgery, should lose weight so the pressure isn’t on his knees? Remember that? Well he never did get surgery or lose weight. That is a prelude to my next sentence. Kevin Steen is apparently nursing a severe knee injury. Wonder how that happened?

- It has been revealed that El Generico is NOT under ROH contract at this time.

- Mike Mondo (Formerly of the WWE Spirit Squad) has officially signed with ROH.

- Maria Kanellis is officially on the ROH ROSTER .

MMA News and Notes

- So Carlos Condit did the unthinkable and defeated Nick Diaz to capture the interim UFC Welterweight Title by a decision. This was definitely a fight that could have been called either way. Some people had Condit, some had Diaz. Nick Diaz however completely disagreed. He felt he was robbed by the judges and promptly announced that he was retiring from MMA since he can’t get a fair shake. He totally blew off the post fight press conference and has not made a statement since the loss.

- Condit was originally undecided on what he plans on doing next however he had insinuated before the fight that he DID NOT plan on waiting until November to fight George St. Pierre and wanted to defend his interim title before then. That all changed on Tuesday when Dana White tweeted that Condit has agreed to a REMATCH with Nick Diaz which will make Condit more money than the first fight and with a win, will likely make Condit a bigger than going into a fight with George St. Pierre. Problem is, Nick Diaz’s trainer/manager Caesar Gracie said that there will be no rematch. Reason being is that Diaz FAILED A DRUG TEST after the fight for marijuana. This is the second time in his career that Diaz has failed for marijuana (he failed in 2007 following his fight with Takanori Gomi) meaning that rather than a normal 6 month suspension, he may get a year.  If this is indeed the case, I think enough is enough with Diaz and it is time for UFC to cut their losses. He bring more problems/conflicts than he is worth.

- How pissed do you think Dana White was when Diaz lost? How pissed do you think GSP is? Apparently after the fight, GSP approached Dana White and stated that he was willing to fight Diaz first before Condit. Diaz vs. GSP was a guaranteed million buy PPV and likely would have been UFC’s top drawing PPV of 2013. Condit vs. GSP was/is not going to draw a million.

- Early estimates for UFC 143 have the show pegged at 400,000 PPV buys which is a HUGE surprise for UFC as they expected about 100,000 less.

- Since beating Fedor Emelianenko, Fabricio Werdum has looked like he belongs in the mix with the top heavyweights in UFC. Werdum put a BEATING on Roy Nelson in his UFC return at UFC 143 before getting the victory. While he didn’t “finish” Nelson, he dominated him. Werdum had not been in a UFC Octagon since being demolished by current UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos in Dos Santos UFC debut.

- Dan Henderson has told Dana White that he is not fighting again until he gets his shot at the winner of Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans. He feels that at his age, there are only so many fights left in him so unless they are title fights and big money fights; he isn’t going to risk losses or injury for them. He is also preparing in the event that Rashad Evans gets injured, to step in and take the title fight in April.

- Apparently Jon Jones family is raking in the money. As stated a few weeks ago, Jones older brother Arthur is currently a starting defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. Well as it turns out, Jones younger brother Chandler is the 23rd ranked overall prospect in this coming NFL draft. He is a defensive end out of Syracuse University. The Jones family has two NFL players and the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion all in the same family? WOW.

- For those who do not think weight cutting effects you, the reason Chael Sonnen looked so sluggish during his fight vs. Michael Bisping a few weeks ago is because even though the fight was at 185 pounds, Sonnen just four weeks before the fight weighed in at 233 pounds. He cut from heavyweight to middleweight in four weeks. OUCH.

- Cain Velasquez is looking to fight in either May (with the Memorial Day weekend card being discussed) or June. As of right now, the front runner for his opponent is Frank Mir and the winner either being next in line or close to getting a title shot at the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem.

- UFC on FOX 4 is set for August 4th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

- Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is in bad shape. Since he is likely to have to miss a year due to his steroid suspension (his hearing has not taken place yet to get his punishment), Lawal decided to replace his ACL in his knee. Problem is, he underwent severe complications with the surgery including a life threatening infection and has since undergone 5 surgeries in the past 15 days. That is NOT a good thing. Doctors told him had he waited two more days to get the last surgery, due to how bad it was infected, he would have likely lost the leg.

UFC ON FUEL is on February 15th from Omaha Nebraska and the line-up is as follows:

  • Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger
  • Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman
  • Jonathan Brookins vs. Rani Yahya
  • Aaron Simpson vs. Ronny Markes

UFC 144 is on February 26th from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows:

  • LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Ben Henderson
  • Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Ryan Bader
  • Jake Shields vs. Yoshiro Akiyama
  • Joe Lauzon vs. Anthony Pettis
  • Chieck Kongo vs. Mark Hunt

  • Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald
  • Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin

UFC on FOX 3 is n May 5th from East Rutherford New Jersey and the line-up is as follows:

  • Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz
  • Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson
  • Dennis Hallman vs. Anthony Ferguson

  • Thiago Silva vs.
  • Tom Lawlor vs. Jason McDonald
