Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It's Friday!!!!!
Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled
“Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling
PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy.
1)
WWE News and Notes
- Leading off with what in my book is MAJOR WWE NEWS, Vince McMahon announced yesterday during WWE’s Quarterly Investor Conference Call that they are dropping the “Survivor Series” PPV name after 23 years. Survivor Series was the second oldest WWE PPV after Wrestlemania and was originally created to compete (and ruin) WCW’s version of Wrestlemania, the Starcade PPV which traditionally fell on Thanksgiving Day until being moved to December.
- This saddens me. While I understand the need for it considering Survivor Series saw a drop in buys compared to the other 4th quarter PPV’s but still, 23 years is a long time. A great tradition for the company and I always enjoyed the traditional SS style matches. Too bad they drifted away from that. Hopefully they will use the match down the line somewhere. Even more hopefully is that this causes the WWE to use the War Games concept.
- Another major development from the conference call was that Vince McMahon stated that WWE has done all of their due diligence and are approximately 18 months away from launching their own permanent cable network along the lines of the NFL network and MLB networks. This will not be a PPV concept. It will be an actual channel across all cable companies. While it will not mean the imminent end of WWE on USA, My Network TV or SyFy, it will create a ton of leverage during negotiations should their station take off and become successful.
- Damn good episode of RAW this week. Everything has a purpose and not for nothing but if RAW keeps up the solid booking and good angles (which leading into Mania, there’s no reason why not), TNA is going to get crushed in the ratings.
- I’m completely flabbergasted as to why they continue to show Bret Hart beat the piss out of Vince McMahon on free television. Easy money is having Bret not touch Vince until Mania. Sure I understand the main visual is locking Vince in the sharpshooter but still, they had to do the Bret gets his hands on Vince deal last week in order to introduce Batista and Cena into the storyline. This week, mind boggling.
- Bret however did look better in throwing his punches. He did look rusty when he was attacking Vince and the security (then again, he hasn’t thrown a worked punch in about 10 years or so and they are probably the hardest thing to do). He was moving better and less gingerly and the angle was FANTASTIC from beginning to end.
- John Cena has a bad back. Has had one for weeks now hence why he has been protected in tag matches and six mans and held off of long singles matches on PPV. So, just a suggestion to WWE management, it probably isn’t the best idea to have him get Batista-Bombed on the steel ring steps. No?
- While not official, chances are that current ECW Champion Christian will move to the Smackdown brand once WWE NXT debuts. What is official however is that on February 23rd, all ECW wrestlers become free agents which means for the next few weeks leading into Mania, we should be having “re-debuts” on both RAW and Smackdown.
- Speaking of Christian, line of the week goes to him. Christian to Sheamus: “We have a lot in common. Neither of us was born with a last name.”
- Jared the Subway guy at RAW, CM Punk confronts him and tries to convert him to the “Straight Edge Society”, he declines. Punk’s response: “I had a feeling you’d say no Jared, That’s why I’m prepared to make an example out of you! Luke, Serena - GET ME JARED FROM SUBWAY!”PURE GOLD FROM PUNK!!!
- Shawn Michaels continues to add to his resume of being the best of all time with his off the rocker obsession with Taker. The man has managed to resurrect (no pun intended) a career that many thought was over with his loss to Steve Austin at Wrestlemania all those years ago. He is a phenomenal performer and while this statement may not be popular, I do truly believe that Shawn Michaels is the best performer EVER. He has surpassed Ric Flair in my book. Now I recently observed a debate on how Shawn is on the decline. Sure, the man is 44 years old, had a “career ending” back in jury in 1998, came back in 2002 and has been working injured ever since. Yet when the time is right, Shawn always dials it up a notch and makes wrestling on television completely compelling no matter the cost. Just look back at Shawn’s biggest feuds/angles in the past few years. From his entire run with Jericho to his Mania moment with Flair to his moment with Taker at last years Mania which is by far one of the top 5 Mania matches EVER to the build up to this year’s Mania. Shawn Michaels is truly in a class by himself with his ability to tell/sell a story. Anyone who says “Shawn sucks” or “Mark Henry is better than Shawn these days” (YES THAT WAS AN ACTUAL STATEMENT from someone) is deluding themselves. 44-year old injured Shawn is still one of the best in the world. His entire body of work career wise is better than anyone else in the business.
- In what has to have WWE management salivating, Dr. Dory Funk Jr. (Dory Funk III) makes his independent wrestling debut on February 20th. He is the son of Dory Funk Jr. and grand-nephew of Terry Funk. He is a 4th generation wrestler and being a Funk means he definitely knows how to work. The man knows how to tell a story and deliver in the ring given his physical limitations.
- Show-Miz, I like it.
- WWE officially announced on RAW their 1st inductee to the 2010 Hall of Fame. It is none other than the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. They have un-officially announced Stu Hart and Antonio Inoki.
- Tentative plan as of right now is for Undertaker to drop the title in the Elimination Chamber. My guess is that Jericho wins it and faces Edge for the title. If that is indeed the case, my 2nd guess is that contrary to what everyone is going to think, Jericho is going to walk out of Mania champion as well. Edge will not get his revenge at Mania.
- Going back to Shawn Michaels; he is truly amazing. In the first graduating class at the Texas Wrestling Academy, he was the head trainer before leaving it to Rudy Boy Gonzalez. In his first and only class were “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson, Brian “Spanky” Kendrick, Garrison “Lance” Cade, Michael Shane and a man by the name of Shooter Schultz. They were all signed to WWE developmental deals. With the exception of Shultz, all have gone onto success in the wrestling world. What is amazing about it is that at the time, every single scout including Jim Ross said that Shultz was by far the most talented of the group. WOW. That really says something about him and his potential since Danielson is considered the best in the world today and the rest of the crew has been really decent in their careers.
- Here’s
Shultz vs. Kendrick
.
- Make sure you tune into Smackdown tonight so you can see the Hart Dynasty get their big push to coincide with Bret Hart’s storyline on RAW!!! Oh wait…….
- Joe "Road Warrior Animal" Laurinaitis is writing a book on the career of the
Road Warriors
due out in March 2011.
-
WWE NXT
. Early details on this show from WWE insiders (courtesy of
Mike Johnson
) state that this show is going to be similar to a reality show of sorts. It will take you through the life of a “new” WWE Superstar®© and find out more details about them such as their goals, aspirations, background, etc. Similar to the Ultimate Fighter and Tough Enough. They will have matches on the show and the goal is for the developmental talent to “fight” their way up to RAW and/or Smackdown. The show will at first largely be built around the stories of Kaval (Low-Ki) and “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson since WWE has full confidence in them displaying quality in ring work. As the show progresses, they are more than likely going to focus on a lot of the 2nd and 3rd generation wrestlers in developmental since those are the guys who have a better understanding of wrestling than the FCW guys who come from independents.
-
Bryan “American Dragon” Danielson vs. Kaval (Low-Ki)
from FCW.
- The title of Mickie James country music album is Strangers and Angels and is due in stores on March 23rd.
- The latest on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is that he and WWE are negotiating him to return for MULTIPLE appearances to host RAW this summer. He himself has stated that while he does not plan on wrestling, he is definitely doing something “different” than previous guest hosts and that it will definitely be big.
-
TRIPLE H FUN FACT: HHH has only 28 clean losses since 2001. (Clean meaning no interference. Tag Team, six mans, etc are not included. Single matches ONLY..)
The guest host schedule for RAW is as follows:
-
February 15th – Talk Show Host Jerry Springer
-
February 22nd – Singer Jewel and husband bull rider Ty Murray
-
March 1st – Actors/Comedian’s Cheech and Chong
-
March 8th – Magician Criss Angel
-
March 15th – WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
2) WWE ELIMINATION CHAMBER
is on February 21, 2010 from St. Louis Missouri and the line-up is as follows:
-
ELIMINATION CHAMBER WWE TITLE:Sheamus
© vs.
John Cena
vs. Ted DiBiase vs. Randy Orton vs. Kofi
Kingston
vs. Triple H
-
ELIMINATION CHAMBER WORLD TITLE: The Undertaker © vs. Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison vs. R-Truth vs. CM Punk
-
WWE DIVAS TITLE: Mayrese vs. Gail Kim
3) TENTATIVE WRESTLEMANIA 26 LINE-UP:
-
TENTATIVE WORLD TITLE:
Undertaker © vs. Shawn Michaels (99.9% probable)
-
TENTATIVE
WORLD TITLE: Chris Jericho vs. Edge (99.9% probable may not be for the title)
-
TENTATIVE
WWE TITLE: Sheamus © vs. HHH (99.9% probable, may not be for the title
-
Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase vs. Cody Rhodes (99.9% probable)
-
MASK VS. HAIR: Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
-
STREET FIGHT: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Vince McMahon
OR
-
STREET FIGHT: Bret “Hitman” Hart & John Cena vs. Vince McMahon & Batista
OR
-
STREET FIGHT: John Cena w/Bret “Hitman” Hart in his corner vs. Batista w/Vince McMahon in his corner.
-
Now there are still some main players without a match. Assumption is that Kofi Kingston and probably the usual ladder match suspects of Christian, Matt Hardy, Kane and Shelton Benjamin will be in MITB.
-
Where Big Show is left is beyond me? Teaming with Miz I guess?
4) TNA News and Notes
- In what could be a red herring, The Universal Studio’s website has REMOVED the March 1 (Monday) TNA live event from their schedule. This could be because TNA has yet to officially confirm a live Monday show or because TNA wants to announce it themselves on Sunday’s PPV.
- Bobby Lashley has been removed from the TNA roster page. He is still with the company however TNA does not plan to use him fulltime for the immediate future as he focuses on his MMA career and Strikeforce.
- As I stated a few weeks back, Jeff Hardy IS NOT signed with TNA. His appearance was a one-shot deal however he has been telling friends that once his legal trouble ends, he will most definitely sign with TNA. This saddens me to no end. I don’t understand how you can go from being the hottest babyface wrestler since “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to wrestling in TNA for less money, in front of fewer fans and not be the centerpiece of the promotion. In WWE, Jeff would have come back, been placed right back in the main event picture and would have been a huge superstar. I only hope that he comes to his senses and comes back to WWE.
- *SIGH* Ric Flair in an interview with the Virginian-Pilot stated that he WILL be wrestling for TNA and stated that it will be sooner rather than later. What a way to waste away his legacy and the most fantastic retirement ceremony in wrestling history. COMPLETE SHAME.
- I completely did not realize this until Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan commented on it during a Bubba the Love Sponge interview but Sting no showed the last TNA PPV. He was scheduled to appear on camera and did not come to the event. He told TNA management that he had a “family emergency” and coming from Sting, that was more than likely the truth considering he has never missed a wrestling event in his career. Regardless, Bischoff and Hogan were not pleased.
- March’s “Destination X” PPV is scheduled to be an all X-Division PPV. The promotional posted features Daniels, The Motor City Machine Guns, Amazing Red, D’Angelo Dinero, Suicide, Kiyoshi, Jay Lethal and Consequences Creed.
- Some “interesting” photos of Frankie Kazarian aka Suicide leaked on to the internet this past week. Basically it is some shots of him naked. Rumor has it that they were leaked by his ex-girlfriend, porn actress Lela Star. She did not take their break up well and decided to try and humiliate him and ruin his current relationship by doing this. For those who do not know, Kazarian is currently married to Traci Brooks.
- Honky Tonk Man has fessed up and admitted that he does not have a TNA deal and he is not joining the company.
- Scott Steiner has been removed from the TNA roster page. This sucks in my book because he definitely could have contributed to the show in some fashion and has been working hard over the past few months even though he was practically immobile. Unfortunately Scott has done nothing but bash HHH and Shawn Michaels over the past few years meaning that his wrestling career, at least on a national level, is probably done.
- In a recent interview, Jimmy Hart has stated that he will be an on-air character for TNA soon. Given that he is Hogan’s best friend, I am going to consider this as true.
- Tara successfully defended her Knockout’s Title last week. Here’s a
PIC
of her celebrating.
- TNA Star
Madison Rayne
of the Beautiful People turned 24 this week.
- TNA has squashed their beef with Dragon Gate USA and are allowing Generation Me (the Young Bucks) to work the Phoenix Wrestlemania Weekend show. TNA’s main reason for pulling them from the show originally was because it is Mania weekend and they do not want any of their talents being invited or attending any Wrestlemania weekend activity.
5) TNA AGAINST ALL ODDS PPV
is this Sunday from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:
-
TNA champion AJ Styles © vs. Samoa Joe
-
Team 3D vs. The Nasty Boys
-
Tournament for Lockdown PPV TNA championship match: Desmond Wolfe, Kurt Angle, Hernandez, Mr. Anderson, D’Angelo Dinero, Abyss, Matt Morgan and Mick Foley.
6) ROH/DGUSA/EVOLVE/Independent News and Notes:
- The second round and finals of the ROH TV title tournament was unfortunately cancelled (along with an entire day of HD Net tapings) due to a severe snow storm that dropped approximately 18 inches of snow in Pennsylvania. It was so bad that a state of emergency was declared for Philadelphia and once state and authorized vehicles were allowed on the road.
- The first round results were Kevin Steen (who really should be on the shelf and get knee surgery) defeating Rhett Titus, Kenny King over El Generico, Eddie Edwards defeated Colt Cabana and Davey Richards over Delirious.
- The finals of the tournament have been rescheduled to March 5th
- Roderick Strong just signed a contract to remain in Ring of Honor. He has been with the promotion since 2004.
- Independent star Human Tornado abruptly announced his retirement from professional wrestling this week. No reason was given other than that he was retiring and has cancelled all upcoming bookings. He was scheduled to become a full timer in Ring of Honor. I hope that everything is ok with him both physically and personally.
- Shawn Davairi made his return to ROH this past weekend in PA. He had previously worked for Ring of Honor prior to his WWE signing in 2004.
- Former WWE announcer and WWI Member Kevin Kelly has attended the last few HD Net tapings. Kelly, a man who I have worked with in the past on the independent scene, has a fantastic wrestling mind and will be a great assistance to the company alongside Jim Cornette.
- Joining Dragon Gate USA for the Phoenix Wrestlemania Weekend shows are LA Park (the original La Parka from WCW), El Hijo de Rey Mysterio (the legit son of Rey Mysterio Sr.), Dudumu Yokozuna, Genki Horiguchi, Shingo and Naruki Doi from Dragon Gate Japan.
- The annual “Dragon Gate Six Man” is returning this year only not for Ring of Honor but rather for Dragon Gate USA. They have been annual staples of Wrestlemania weekend and have continuously placed in the top 3 for Match of the Year on ALL MOTY lists. This year’s match will have CIMA, Gamma & Dragon Kid vs. BxB Hulk, Naruki Doi & Masato Yoshino.
- Samoa Joe makes his return to JAPW on March 20th.
-
WSU
(Woman’s Superstars Unleashed) has their
3rd Anniversary show
on March 6th and it looks to be pretty awesome. For all of you out there who enjoy Women’s wrestling, you should give it a try.
RING OF HONOR
celebrates their 8th Anniversary on Saturday, February 13, 2010 in New York City and the line-up is as follows:
-

-
ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: Jay & Mark Briscoe ©vs. The Dark City Fight Club
-
Roderick Strong vs. Brian Kendrick (Kendrick's return to ROH)
-
El Generico vs. Davey Richards
-
Kenny King vs. Steve Corino vs. Rache Brown vs. Delirious
-
Necro Butcher & Eddie Kingston vs. Erick Stevens & Joey Ryan: No Rules.
-
Colt Cabana vs. Kevin Steen
-

ACE PRO WRESTLING

-
ACE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Mo Sexton ©vs. “The Innovator of Violence” Tommy Dreamer
-
ACE DIAMOND DIVISION TITLE: Bruno Marciano © vs. Mike Donovan
-
ACE TAG TEAM TITLES: Saints of Brutality (Brolly & Stockade) © vs. The Heavy Hitters (Monsta Mack & Havoc)

-
#1 CONTENDERS LADDER MATCH: R8D X (Envy & Neeno Capone) vs. Midnight Sensations (“Hot Blooded” Chris Rockwell & “Sharp” Sam Shields)
-
Rob Vegas vs. Dan Maff
7) MMA News and Notes
- Randy Couture proved once again that you can never count him out. Mind you, he was fighting someone OLDER than him and definitely more beat up in Mark Coleman but still, Coleman has been on a tear recently defeating Stephen Bonner and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his last two fights so this was not a cakewalk for Couture. Couture still managed to come out victorious.
- Per Dana White, Mark Coleman is probably done with UFC. However…..
- …..Coleman used his brain following the fight and decided to get into a verbal spar with Tito Ortiz in his post fight promo. This all started because Tito was at ringside and did some trash talking of his own with Coleman during the fight. Rebutting was a very smart move to keep his name out there and by calling out the one guy in the entire UFC who would comment in response……
- …..Then again, Coleman was officially “cut” from UFC on Wednesday. While they could always bring him back, he is done for the time being.
- Where Couture goes from here is anyone’s guess. According to sources within UFC, he is going to get a title shot. The question is against whom. A fight with Anderson Silva would make a mint at the box office and be Silva’s biggest drawing opponent to date. Problem is, no way can Couture cut to 185 lbs. They could meet at a “catch” weight but that would make the fight a non-title. He could effectively go to 205 lbs and face Lyoto Machida. He is fine making that weight and has no problem cutting since he goes into camp at around 217 lbs. So that is a possibility and the most likely scenario. The final option, which Dana White would want to avoid is Brock Lesnar. However Randy has stated that if he was offered all three fights, he would definitely choose Lesnar. While he wouldn’t admit this publically, I believe he knows he cannot beat Lesnar. The reason he would make that choice is because he makes a percentage of the PPV revenue and a rematch with Brock will guarantee him a 7-figure payday.
- Also cut from UFC was TNA “star” Frank Trigg.
- Hershel Walker and his team think that they can get another fight in the works for April. This has the potential to be an amazing story because he basically learned a lot in his initial 3 months of training and will probably continue to improve as time goes on. At his age, if he can keep winning and improving, I think he can possibly win a title in Strikeforce.
- Dana White has practically confirmed at the UFC 109 press conference that Brock Lesnar’s next fight will be in July. Brock was aiming for a May return but Dana wants to hold him out until the Nogueria/Velasquez and Mir/Carwin fights are done.
- Dana White on Strikeforce: “Strikeforce is a lower-level show where younger guys and guys who aren’t good enough to fight in UFC can go and make some money. It will never be anything else….EVER.”
- Brock is also going to grace the cover of the new “
UFC Undisputed
” game that is scheduled for a May release. Brock also was on the cover of “WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain”.
- The Quinton Jackson vs. Rashad Evans fight is tentatively scheduled to take place on the May 29th show. Also schedule for that date is Forrest Griffith vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueria.
- Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz is being penciled in for June 12th from Vancouver. This will make the first time in UFC history that the coaches from TUF end up fighting BEFORE the show’s finale.
- Kimbo Slice’s next fight will be on May 8th from Montreal against fellow TUF contestant Matt Mitrone.
- WEC is planning on holding a “stand alone” PPV separate from UFC. It will be held in the Arco Arena in Sacramento CA on April 24th headlined by Urijah Farber vs. Jose Aldo Jr. for the WEC 145 pound title.
- Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski will be stepping in the ring later this month to face off in a boxing exhibition against professional boxer Fres Oquendo. Oquendo has a decent boxing resume including only 5 losses (to Evander Holyfield, John Ruiz, Chris Byrd and David Tua).
- UFC 112, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, will air LIVE on PPV here in the United States with a 1:00 pm ET PPV start time (10:00 am PT) and will then air again in their normal 9:00 pm ET slot on PPV as well.
UFC 110

-
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria vs. Cain Velasquez

-
Keith Jardine vs. Ryan Bader
-
Joe Stevenson vs. George Sotiropoulos
UFC 111
is on March 27, 2010 from Newark NJ and the line-up is as follows:
-
INTERIM HE
AVYWEIGHT TITLE: Frank Mir vs. Shane Carwin
-
WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: George St. Pierre © vs. Dan Hardy
-
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
-
Phil Baroni vs. Marcus Davis

-
Mostapha Al Turk vs. Jon Madsen

- I’m not a football fan but this year’s Super Bowl has officially been named the most watched television program EVER. It has surpassed M*A*S*H*’s finale as the most watched show of all time with an estimated 106.5 million viewers. It is also the first sports program to ever top 100 million viewers. Congrats to the NFL.

- I’ve always said to myself that I would never comment on “her’ or her douche husband but I need to address Heidi Montag. For all of you who don’t know (and shouldn’t care) who she is, I will fill you in. She is a fake reality show star of the OC and the Hills. She is married to a piece of sh*t named Spencer Pratt and all they do is create fake photo opportunities to get publicity. Anyway, to make a long story short, Heidi recently underwent 10 hours of plastic surgery to change her face, eyes, nose, boobs, lypo, etc. She looks like a completely different person now and while I don’t like her by any means as a person, she wasn’t bad looking; cute girl. Now, she looks like Dr. Frankenstein perfected his making of a person gimmick. She is really heartbroken because she recently unveiled her “new look” to her mother and her mother was horrified. She doesn’t understand why. It’s real simple honestly. Your mother was horrified because YOU ARE ONLY 23 YEARS OLD!!!! Demi Moore has had less work on her than you have and she is more than twice your age!!! WTF you dumb bimbo, it isn’t rocket science. When you get more work on your face than a car crash victim that slams through a windshield, obviously people are going to wonder what the f*ck is wrong with you, especially your mom!!!!
- Actress
Anne Hathaway
is a fantastic actress. She has great range from family to comedy to drama to even action. She will also undoubtedly win an Academy Award one day as she has already been nominated and has held her own in movies with Meryl Streep. She is a hottie and she looks like she would make a
GOOD
girlfriend.
- Just a quick note for all of you half-ass baseball fans who don’t know much about the sport. Please stop asking me if I think Derek Jeter will leave the Yankees once his contract is up at the end of the upcoming season. Derek Jeter WILL NEVER depart the Yankees either on his own or by being forced out. The man is going to retire a NY Yankee. End of story.
- Actor
Christopher Meloni
stated this past week that next season (2011) will be his last playing the role of Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: SVU.
- Avatar was knocked out of the #1 spot from the box office for the first time since its release. It was defeated by “Dear John” (a chick flick). Amazingly however, even though it is out of the number 1 spot, it has only suffered a 25% loss from its debut week. It grossed an estimated $25 million to take the number 2 spot and has now grossed $630 million domestically. It is the highest grossing film ever.
