By Matt Dawgs Feb 17, 2012 - 8:20 AM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #145

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: Tough Enough 4's Winner Daniel Puder shoots on ClubWWI.com just like he did on Kurt Angle.  It's a rare interview with James Guttman that has many people shocked and talking.  You know where it is?  Yup... GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes

- In MAJOR NEWS, (SPOILER ALERT) Randy Orton suffered a concussion during his match with the Big Show on Monday and is OUT of the Elimination Chamber match this Sunday. Since Mania is only 6 weeks away, I am assuming that Orton is going to be very limited in what he does so that he is ok to go by Mania. His replacement in the Elimination Chamber match will be decided tonight on Smackdown. Please highlight the blank space to see who will be in the match in his place. SPOILER: Santino Marella. Yes, that is NOT a typo. Marella wins a battle royal to end up as Orton’s replacement. END OF SPOILER.

- Please note that I 100% do not expect WWE to go ahead with the above mentioned spoiler. I think it is a swerve and they will shoot an angle on Sunday at the PPV to change it. Mark Henry was actually flown to Smackdown and was to be named Orton’s replacement but WWE thought twice about it and decided against it as they want him rested in time for Mania.

- RAW was so-so which is not a good sign heading into a PPV this coming Sunday.

- The opening segment was abysmal. From my understanding, they were trying to knock the Republican Presidential debates that are on going. How this sells a PPV is beyond me but nothing good came out of it other than Truth being a clown. I get Truth, I like Truth but how a man is more focused on being Looney yet you are trying to push him like a viable contender and possible champion is mind boggling. PS – CM Punk does not lose on Sunday.

- The matches that came out of it weren’t anything to write home about either. I did get a chuckle out of Miz tapping out clean to the Anaconda Vise. It certainly sucks to be him right about now.

- Having a LIVE show isn’t easy. Don’t believe me, ask Big Show or Eve. LOL. If you missed them both, during the Big Show vs. Randy Orton match, Big Show was supposed to block the RKO and choke slam Orton leading to the Daniel Bryan run in. Problem was, he apparently forgot that spot and took the RKO. They ended up messing EVERYTHING up because Orton couldn’t cover him because Show would have had to kick out which would have hurt his finishing move. So Orton ended up stalling for a bit while Show recovered. When Show finished selling the move and started to get up, you can visibly (and if you listen closely enough, audibly) mutter the work F*CK. They then went to the proper finish of Daniel Bryan running in. Unfortunately WWE has edited the clip from the website so you can’t see the screw up.

- With Eve, it wasn’t her fault but rather the production team. When she was being “abducted” by Kane, apparently they cut back to the backstage area too early and you can see Eve calmly walking into the back of the ambulance while Kane, like a gentleman, is holding the door open for her. A production agent then waves something at Kane and he both he and Eve begin their scene. She panicked and started yelling. It was hilarious!! Sadly it was also edited from the WWE YouTube Channel.

- Eve was certainly into her “scene” with Cena though. She went in hard on that kiss. It looked like she was enjoying herself too.

- It is official, Zack Ryder is a TOOL. The WWE creative team has completely underlined that fact and then circled it with a red marker and then highlighted it after bolding it and raising the font to 26. There is no better way to say it. WWE has booked him to look like a total loser and I cannot fathom any fan wanting to rally behind Ryder when he is booked to be a buffoon. It is horrible booking and I do not feel sorry for him. So what if Eve left him and wants Cena? Ryder can’t fight for himself, Cena is always saving her, and Cena isn’t in a wheel chair because he is capable of defending himself against Kane. Why would she want to be with such a doofus like Ryder? It makes perfect sense. I do not blame her or Cena.

- Sick bump by Ryder off the stage in the wheel chair. I have no idea why he thought that was a smart bump to take or why WWE officials didn’t gimmick anything for him. That was an accident waiting to happen. Knees, ankles, back are all things that could have been legit injured by taking that; plus a wheelchair falling on top of him, ugh.

- For some reason, I do not think Kane’s promo was supposed to be funny. Not sure if anyone caught it but he was trying to sound serious and he said, “Now that you are embracing the hate Cena, I am going to finish you once and for all at Elimination Chamber. Then, you will never wrestle again, until Wrestlemania vs. The Rock.”. LOL. Like seriously? WTF? So he is going to end Cena….until Wrestlemania?

- The HHH/HBK segment discussing the Undertaker was all sorts of AWESOME . The back and forth promos between the two men, also enhanced by HHH in his promo, is a glaring example on how WWE fails to create new stars. Everyone knows that they are not scripted and that is what separates the WWE Hall of Famers from today’s “stars” and I use that term loosely. HHH, HBK, Taker, Austin, Rock, Mick Foley, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, etc. weren’t scripted. They are veteran enough to get angles over and have the gift of gab. You take a look at the HHH/HBK promo and compare it to the opening segment and you see a HUGE difference. Plus, like I mentioned, creating new stars becomes all the more difficult when you have someone like HHH blatantly reference the fact that he and HBK and Taker are the last of a dying breed. Basically that was him referencing the fact that they are larger than life Superstars and today’s class of WWE talents are not in their league. While that is an actual FACT, no need to bring attention to it from the fans. Other than that though, I cannot sing the praises of that promo enough.

- WWE decided to pay attention to detail. That is the only explanation for Undertaker cutting his hair off in the video they aired of him. Good idea since it is likely his hair will not be grown by Mania time. Either they had him cut pieces of it off so they can get small extensions for it or he is going to be bald again.

- If you noticed, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler referred to Tamina on RAW as Tamina Snuka. WWE is going to begin pushing her hard as the daughter of Jimmy Snuka.

- Not many people took notice but Evan Bourne has been removed from the opening video package to RAW and all of his merchandise has been marked down on WWE.com. Uh oh for him.

- Someone called his momma because he has been sent back home. Brodus Clay has been PULLED from television at the hands of Vince McMahon. Vince felt that his in ring work just wasn’t up to snuff for the level of push they were giving him. I am not really sure how you can judge his in ring work fairly since he has done nothing but squash matches. Clay will be back in FCW honing his skills until he is called back up. What a waste of time.

- Both Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio were backstage at RAW but were not written into the script. With the case of Del Rio, he is ready to come back however they do not have a spot for him on Sunday’s PPV so he will either make his return at Elimination Chamber to set up his Wrestlemania feud or on the RAW following the show. In Mysterio’s case, he is telling people that he will in fact be ready for Mania and wants to wrestle on the show however WWE is tentative as he is not medically cleared and do not want to rush him and risk further injury since he is so injury prone with his knees. Originally they wanted him to wrestle Sin Cara at the PPV and set the Guinness Book of World Records for most people in masks however that was squashed once both men got injured.

- For the record, giving a guy wins on television does not equal getting someone “over”. Sheamus has done absolutely nothing note worthy since winning the Royal Rumble. He is in a holding pattern. Past Royal Rumble winners are put in big angles or do something meaningful. Sheamus on the other hand has been feuding with Wade Barrett but besides that, isn’t even booked for the PPV on Sunday. I feel like he is being wasted by creative.

- By the way, I miss the old days where the Rumble winner got a shot at the title from his brand and then the Elimination Chamber would be booked to get the opposing brand title shot at Mania. I just think it is lame that Sheamus wins the Rumble to get a shot at Mania meanwhile 5 other guys are getting a title shot BEFORE HIM!!!

- A new VIDEO PACKAGE on the Rock that aired last week on Smackdown.

- Chris Jericho recently confirmed some tweets by Diamond Dallas Page stating in an interview that he almost did not come back to WWE due to a severe herniated disc in his back that he injured ironically on Dancing with the Stars. Jericho, who other than a broken arm early in his career (which he still wrestled on in Smokey Mountain Wrestling) has never been injured, was in so much pain that he didn’t think he would wrestle again. DDP reached out to him and ended up teaching him yoga which alleviated his pain in his back and has helped improve his in ring performance. Jericho is not the first person involved in wrestling who has credited DDP for helping him. Several stars including Shawn Michaels, Tommy Dreamer and others have said that DDP’s program has changed their lives.

- The April 10th Smackdown will be broadcast LIVE on SyFy.

- WWE NXT is still going. No winner has been announced. The show has been on for almost a year now. Unbelievable.

- In what is likely a sign that his dates are going to be limited, The Undertaker has been removed from the Smackdown opening video package and the Smackdown roster page on WWE.COM . This means that his appearances leading up to Wrestlemania will likely be exclusive to RAW and he is unlikely to wrestle on the Smackdown brand following the Mania PPV.

- The March 5th edition of RAW from Boston Massachusetts is set to be HUGE. Currently scheduled to appear are The Rock, The Undertaker, HHH, Shawn Michaels and Shaquille O’Neal (to kick off his angle for Wrestlemania with the Big Show). For the record, the Rock is not “one and done” with Mania. He is going to appear on the RAW following Mania (also from Miami) and he is expected to wrestle on another PPV this year, likely Summerslam if his schedule permits.

- OUCH !!!

- Both Cena and Rock have continued their Twitter battle this week starting on Valentine’s Day when The Rock tweeted Cena this gem:

"@WWE @JohnCena Happy Valentines Day John. You may not be my girl, but I do consider you my bitch. #BootsToCenasPinkParts"

Cena replied: "For those that didn't get the "pink part" thing he once again is re referencing my mangina. So I propose this... Cena tampons. "That time of the month got u feeling bad, just put a lil Cena inside ya :) he'll make ya feel fine" #champax"

"Or Cena feminine wash. "Tough day south of the equator? Lather some Cena on there and they can't smell you!" #massCENAgil :)"

"that's the late nite act kiddos. Be back for the morning show at Metlife Stadium tomorrow. See u then movie star."

- WWE Champion CM Punk in this week’s edition of “ THE GRACIE BREAKDOWN ” featuring boyfriend of WWE Diva Eve Torres, Rener Gracie.

- Amy “Lita” Dumas has filmed new interviews for the new Edge DVD that is set to come out chronicling his career.

- Last week marked the 9th anniversary of the passing of WWE Hall of Famer “Mr. Perfect” Curt Henning. Both Michael “Joe Henning” McGuillicuty and WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels both posted comments including Michaels announcing that Henning is the one who actually came up with the Heartbreak Kid nickname for him when he went solo.

- Props go out to Mark Henry who is being inducted in the inaugural class of the International Sports Hall of Fame in Columbus Ohio. The induction takes place on March 3rd and his class included UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, Boxer Chuck Wepner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack Lalane and Cory Everson.

- WWE Star David Otunga was at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. His fiancée Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to the deceased Whitney Houston as she sang what was arguably Houston’s most famous hit, “I Will Always Love You” from the movie the Bodyguard with Kevin Costner. Hudson considered Houston an idol and was her inspiration to pursue singing professionally.

- WWE is releasing a “Best of WCW Clash of the Champions DVD” hosted by Dusty Rhodes. This should be an epic DVD as the Clash had some memorable matches including the match that MADE Sting into a main event talent vs. Ric Flair.

- WRESTLEMANIA 29 has been confirmed for MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home of the 2012 Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. I will be there. The date is Sunday, April 7th, 2013. The Giants and Jets organizations hosted a press conference yesterday morning and brought out all the stars to push the event. Vince McMahon, Triple H, The Rock, John Cena, Sheamus, Mark Henry and The Bella Twins were on hand for the announcement. You know who wasn’t on hand for the announcement? Neither the WWE CHAMP CM Punk nor WORLD CHAMP Daniel Bryan were in attendance. Tremendous that the two guys who are supposed to represent your main titles weren’t included.

- The biggest news at the press conference however was the fact that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stated that he will be participating at Wrestlemania 29 next year in New Jersey. If this is in fact the case, with the rumors of both “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Brock Lesnar participating at the show, it is going to be HUGE. This will be the Rock’s 3rd straight Wrestlemania appearance.

- Rock tweeted the following after the event: "Met Life Stadium. Home of Wrestlemania 29. 2013. #MetLifeWillGetRocked"

- Former ROH Star Chris Hero has finally made his FCW debut. He is now working under the name Kassius Ohno. For the life of me, I do not know where WWE gets these dreaded names from.

- WWE has begun motion capture work on “WWE 13” for next year. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler will be providing commentary for the game.

- WWE has green lit a 3rd chapter of the Marine which originally starred John Cena and later Ted DiBiase in the straight to DVD sequel. The 3rd movie will be titled “The Marine: Homefront”. WWE is looking to put a top tier name in the company as the starring role; quite possibly even having Cena reprising his role from the first film.

- Former WWE Star Chyna got screwed by Hulk Hogan, John Cena, Ric Flair, Triple H and others. LITERALLY . Her next adult film is set to be a wrestling parody which will feature her having sex with WWE look a likes. She actually has a scene with her and 9 guys at once. So I believe she is serious about her adult film career.

- TNA has undergone a MAJOR shakeup in their creative department as apparently Former head writer Vince Russo is no longer with the company. Russo, who regardless of how much he ruined the product, was considered untouchable for whatever reason and Dixie Carter refused to fire him. He was however replaced late last year by Bruce Prichard as “head of creative”. Even though the title of head of creative officially went to Prichard, Russo was still in charge of writing the show and Prichard only oversaw the last minute changes and approvals. As of now, apparently former WWE creative team member Dave Lagana, who was hired last year to head up the TNA India project Ring Ka King, is now writing the shows with Matt Conway. Lagana is best known as being the understudy of Paul Heyman during Heyman’s run as head of the Smackdown writing team in the early 2000’s as well as one of the writers for the former hit NBC show “Friends”.

- Apparently Russo QUIT. No reason as to why however some speculate that he was upset that he lost his backstage power and did not want to be just a writer. His son was hired last year in a backstage/production capacity and has quit the company as well. While the story broke over the weekend, no official announcement was made until Tuesday afternoon by Dixie Carter via her Twitter. The announcement took so long because Carter was trying to convince Russo to stay with the company. Russo had been with TNA since 2002.

- Her statement: "TNA and Vince Russo have mutually parted ways as of this week. The separation is amicable and professional. We are glad for the opportunity to have worked together and wish each other nothing but good luck and success in the future."

- FYI…the stuff currently taking place in TNA is still the work of Russo. They may have tweaked some stuff here and there but the ideas are from what Russo scripted. After Lockdown is when the majority of non Russo stuff should begin. That is the difference between TNA and WWE. TNA scripts several months in advance rather than week to week.

- Jim Cornette commented via Twitter on the departure of Russo: “Have I died?”

- Best of luck and prayers go out to TNA’s Jesse Sorenson who suffered BROKEN C-1 vertebrae in his neck (the vertebrae that connects the spine to the skull) during his match with Zema Ion at “Against All Odds” on Sunday. It was a freak accident as Ion’s knee hit Sorenson’s head and knocked him unconscious. Unfortunately the knee also broke Sorenson’s neck causing numbness in all of his body. He is now able to move his arms and does however feel some tingling in his toes which is a hopeful sign. Doctors say there is severe swelling in his spinal cord hence why he cannot move his legs yet. The good news is that his spinal cord was not severed because if it was, there would be no chance of him walking again, EVER. The bad news is, the longer it takes for the swelling to go down and for him to move his legs, the worse it becomes for him to recover. In good news though, he has been released from the hospital and was sent home to recover. Keep him in your prayers.

- Kudos to Zema Ion for being professional during the injury. Most wrestlers have a reactionary feeling to injuries and end up breaking character to check on the injured opponent. Ion carried on by celebrating his victory since he is the new number one contender to the X-Division title. I am sure he was broken up inside since no wrestler wants to injure someone so to be able to stay in character and play up his win was a good distraction for the fans who paid attention to him instead of the injured Sorenson.

- Condolences also go out to Taz who lost his brother in law last weekend thus causing him to miss the PPV. Taz was very close to his brother in law as his brother in law was the one who paid for Taz’s wrestling training and pushed him to succeed in wrestling.

- There was no commentary team at the Impact tapings on Monday. Instead, Taz and Mike Tenay voiced in commentary from the production studio in Nashville on Wednesday.

- Samoa Joe is one half of the TNA Tag Team Champions with Brutus Magnus. Remember when Samoa Joe was a main eventer, the future of TNA and undefeated during his debut? LOL.

- If you didn’t see Against All Odds (and I am sure that is MANY of you), the finish to the main event was horrendous. That is all I am going to say about that.

- So the main event of the next PPV is Bobby Roode defending the TNA Impact title vs. James Storm in a steel cage. How did a feud with so much potential that was supposed to drag out until April get here with lackluster build? James Storm is arguably LESS OVER now than he was three months ago and definitely less over when he beat Kurt Angle for the title. I cannot believe that TNA f*cked this angle up. Actually, what am I saying? Of course I believe it, it is TNA!!!!

- You have to love TNA. Late last week, a press release was sent by TNA to Fox Sports announcing that NY Giants Pro Bowler Jason Pierre-Paul was making an appearance on TNA Impact this week and he was set to have a confrontation with Kurt Angle (no idea why Angle was singled out). Anyway, it was all for naught as TNA once again, for the billionth time in their existence, jumped the gun on announcing something before a deal was done. No contract was signed so even though they announced it via press release, Jason Pierre-Paul backed out citing exhaustion. Honest question for you TNA fans, how come WWE never announces a celebrity before signing a contact? Answer: BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE DUMB BUSINESS. Let’s look at the history shall we? Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Jason Pierre-Paul, The return of Booker T, The return of Kevin Nash and I am sure I am missing a bunch more. Unbelievable.

- Anyway, TNA has replaced Pierre-Paul with Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. Not that it matters either way. ESPN showed the highlights of what Jacobs did to Bully Ray and ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt stated “Who are these guys?” when commenting. Way to get TNA talent over!!!

- Kurt Angle has finally woken up and told BBC Sports in an interview that his chances of making the US Olympic Wrestling team are slim to none. He is still planning on trying but he is realistic about it which is far from where he was a few months ago.

- Katie Hebner, daughter of referee Earl Hebner and sister of Brian is looking to join TNA as a Knockout. She has a brief role several years ago in TNA as KATIE KIM , “sister” of Gail but the angle was dropped as Kim left TNA to return to WWE.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- The writing is on the wall and the storyline writes itself but it is obvious that ROH is going to turn Kevin Steen babyface soon. Similar to the Briscoes who are now faces after spending most of last year as heels.

- The Briscoes are F*CKING  AWESOME !!!!!!

- I normally give a full line-up for the annual “ Wrestle Reunion ” event that takes place during Wrestlemania weekend. I am not going to do so but I will highlight the participants who are either VIP guests or have their own vendor table at the event.

MMA News and Notes

- The latest on Nick Diaz is that he is likely to be suspended for a full year. The normal fine/suspension for marijuana is 6 months however this is Diaz’s second suspension for the drug and both were in Nevada. What I am stuck at is the fact that even though Diaz is a talented fighter, how can UFC trust him going forward? Do you give him another title shot? What would have happened had he beat Condit and then failed? Worse off, what would have happened had GSP not gotten injured and he would have beat GSP then failed? UFC would have had irreparable damage. It is just too risky to continue to put Diaz in such high profile positions when you are risking money by him being so flaky.

- After this week’s show on Fuel TV, Dana White kicked himself for making all non PPV and Fox main events three rounds. Jake Ellenberger defeated Diego Sanchez in an incredible 3 round fight that went to a decision. Ellenberger won the first two rounds but was losing the 3rd. Sanchez had Ellenberger in a bad place to end the 3rd and had there been two more rounds, might have been able to finish him. Either way, two more rounds would have been AWESOME. So now, going forward, all main events regardless of what station they air on are going to be five rounds.

- With the win, Ellenberger is the front runner for Carlos Condit’s first Welterweight title defense.

- It has been confirmed. Junior Dos Santos will defend the UFC Heavyweight title vs. Alistair Overeem on Memorial Day Weekend on May 26th in Las Vegas. Also confirmed (likely for June) is Frank Mir vs. Cain Velasquez for the number one contender ship to the Heavyweight title.

- UFC is targeting July 7th for the Dominic Cruz vs. Urijah Faber Bantamweight title rematch.

- UFC Middleweight Michael Bisping has confirmed via his official Twitter that he has left his longtime training gym in the UK and is going to focus on training in the United States going forward.

- Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is throwing around the “R” word lately; R as in retirement. Jackson states that he would like to retire as the Light Heavyweight Champion and had he defeated Jon Jones, he would have retired already or at least after the upcoming UFC 144 show as Jackson stated he would have liked to defend the title in Japan and then retire. Either way, he is throwing out the retirement word a lot which leads me to believe that he is winding down soon. Possibly as soon as the Japan event since he has a lot of great career memories in Japan, it would be a fitting place for him to hang it up. He is pretty far back on the totem pole when it comes to him getting another title shot and at his age with his history, he doesn’t have too many prime years left in him.

- UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta has confirmed that while no date has been set, Tito Ortiz’s retirement fight will take place in 2012 and will be vs. Forrest Griffin.

- The UFC on FOX 3 special is locked in and Nate Diaz (brother of the abovementioned Nick) is in the main event. This is a huge test for UFC because neither Diaz nor Jim Miller are main event UFC talents and this fight, even though it is free, is going up against a Floyd Mayweather PPV. The Mayweather card has both Shane Mosley and Winky Wright on the under card. Now while both are past their prime, they are both fairly big names in boxing so UFC and Fox are both putting a lot on the line here by airing a show head to head with Mayweather. The show (UFC) is filled with fights that are action based and should be fun to watch but none of the names (maybe Koscheck to an extent) are MMA draws.

- Former WWE Tough Enough competitor Jeremiah Riggs will be fighting for Bellator on March 16th vs. undefeated Trey Houston.

- Miesha Tata vs. Ronda Rousey VIDEO .

- The GINA CARANO gravy train is in motion as Hollywood has locked her down. She is now set to star in her second major motion picture which is an action movie titled “In The Blood”. The movie is set to begin filming in late spring/early summer. The movie is about a couple who is vacationing in the Caribbean when the husband goes missing. Carano stars as the wife in the couple and sets out on her own to track down the men responsible for the kidnapping and murder of her spouse. The movie is supposed to be similar to the surprise hit Liam Neeson film “Taken”.

- UFC Octagon Girl ARIANNY CELESTE is at the pool.

- UFC Octagon Girl Brittany Palmer is on the cover of February’s PLAYBOY MAGAZINE .

UFC 144 is on February 26th from Tokyo Japan and the line-up is as follows: (Note: airing on PPV in the US on February 25th.)
