T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #150

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: James Guttman told me that there's a special edition of Glacier's "Breaking The Ice" on the way...along with a very special (and rare) guest that EVERYONE in the wrestling business has an opinion on.  It's on its way. In the meantime, there's hundreds more stars too. GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

MATT NOTE: Special Thanks this week to my special guest contributer, Aaron Wood as without Aaron, you likely wouldn't be reading this column this week. FYI...I am super jammed at work (yes, WWI isn't my only job, JG doesn't pay me enough...YET.) so Aaron may fill in completely next week. That is up in the air right now.

AARON NOTE: It's never a problem to help out my good friend Matt Dawgs.  To be honest, Matt's already done 95% of the work, and I've just had to fill in some of the blanks and put in my 2 cents worth.  Thusly, anything I've written has my initials beside it and/or is coloured red, just so you know.

WWE News and Notes

- RAW was a ho-hum, paint by numbers show that appeared to just be treading water until next weeks “go-home” show before Mania. Nothing was horrible on this show per-se but nothing stood out or was extraordinary either. Everyone seemed to be going through the motions. It is almost as if the writing team planned all these awesome angles to build to Mania but they were off by a week and did not calculate how many RAWs were left until Mania so they needed one episode of filler.

- I’d like to reiterate that CM Punk and Chris Jericho do not need the additional drama of alcoholic fathers and drug addict sisters. It is a waste of time. Credit goes to Punk and Jericho for making the best of the material they are running with. The passion in the promos they are doing is great. But it just isn’t resonating to me. Waste of time. These two men should be focusing on the title and who is the best in the world; nothing more, nothing less.

- The Rock was once again comedy gold in his promo in front of the Rocky statue but this week was by far the worst week for his angle with Cena. Both men did very little on the show and I do not get how the Rock coming out AFTER Cena won his match vs. Mark Henry and then Rock Bottoming him was a “big surprise” that Rock was hyping. Regardless, next week they come to blows to close the show heading into Mania.

AW: I've always been a big Rock guy, but I've been less than impressed with, at least, the material he's had to work with, making the same horribly juvenile jokes that Cena is often accused of doing, and Rock isn't exactly polish the turd.  I thought the Rock Concert for example was utterly dreadful.  But Rock won me back a little this week with his promo.  Why?  Short on the terrible jokes and for what seems like the first time, actually CARING that he had a match coming up.  Watch the concert.  He wasn't a dude who had a match with Cena a few weeks hence.  He was a dude engaged in a dick-swinging contest there and then with him.  Yes, Cena made jokes and rude references in his rap, but it was cacooned in the notion that he was going to beat Rock at Mania.  However, this week Rock was all about that match, and I thought his promo was the best since he's done since returning because of it.

- LORD TENSAI is Matt Bloom a.k.a. A-train/Albert. He is set to debut after Mania. Japanese WWE Superstar commented on Twitter than Tensai in Japanese means “A natural disaster or act of God”. It is expected that Tensai is going to be pushed directly into the main event vs. either John Cena or Randy Orton as neither have a feud set up post Mania. Bloom was always a solid worker and his years of working in Japan can only have helped his in ring work. He was let go from WWE in 2004 only because they had to do some cuts and at the time the choice was between him and Andrew “Test” Martin who was his former partner. Test had the bigger upside and Bloom was out with an injury so they chose him. He was always well liked in the locker room and by management as a “good soldier” who did what was asked and did not stir the pot.

- Poor Miz. Another week, another loss and still no Mania match.

AW:  Matt last week wondered if Miz going from Main Event to not on the show was unprecedented.  I had already looked into this with a post in the forums, and yeah, it pretty much is.  Every single person who main evented Mania one year but weren't an official part of a match the next year had either left the company, were injured or retired.

Sid main evented Wrestlemanias 8 and 13 but left the company before 9 and 14 each time.  Hogan main evented Wrestlemania 9 (technically anyway) and was gone by that summer.  Bam Bam Bigelow main evented 10, but left that November.

Stone Cold main evented 15 but missed 16 due to his neck injury.  Batista headlined 21, but missed 22 due to injury, although he did appear on the show interrupting an Orton backstage interview to put him on notice.  And HHH went from being on top in 22 to missing 23 because of his second quad tear.

Mick Foley headlined 16 but even then, that was supposed ot be a one night-only deal for a guy who retired.  And even though still "retired" when X7 rolled around, he was actively part of a match by way of being the referee for Vince vs. Shane.

As you might expect however, when it comes to the subject of Shawn Michaels, things get a bit muddy, as he's a three-time main event/no match guy. He main evented 26 against Taker, but that was his retirement match.  Fair enough.  He main evented Wrestlemania 14, but missed 15 due to the at-the-time career-ending back injury, although by Wrestlemania 15, he was commissioner and appeared on the PPV to eject the Corporation from ringside in that main event.

However, when he main evented 12 and missed 13, it was due to the "knee injury" that caused him to "retire" after the "Lost My Smile" promo.  But this was essentially a crock of crap to get out of dropping the title, and indeed, he came back and promptly won the tag titles with Austin.  But then, the official line was that he had retired, so in that case, Miz would be the first to go from headliner to nothing.

- Completely lackluster closing angle with Undertaker/Shawn Michaels/Triple H. Although I do admit that I completely loved the Shawn Michaels smile when Taker told HHH that Shawn is better than him. Intrigue!!!!

- Weak Randy Orton promo. I am guessing that they needed to find a reason to put him on the show.

- So, Big Show is a big man. I get that. But WWE really has a problem when it comes to booking him in angles. He doesn’t need to be taking hard shots to the face and head. He did it with Floyd Mayweather where Floyd legit busted his nose with a stiff punch to the face and on Monday, even though he was wearing boxing gloves and pulling his punches to the best of his ability, Cody Rhodes was still laying in shots. It is unsafe and not a good thing to do. They can get an angle involving Show over without having him take unnecessary beatings.

- PS – does Show go over at Mania? He has been on the losing end of this entire feud with all the heat going on Cody Rhodes.

- If you blinked and missed it, former Dynamic Dude tag team partner for John Laurinaitis, Shane Douglas was sitting in sightline of the hard camera during the Kane/Big Show match in a white dress shirt and Lucha Libre mask. During the match, he ripped open the shirt to reveal a “Franchise” shirt, took off the mask and tried to get an ECW chant started (to no avail). He then walked through the crowd trying to start the chant before being escorted out of the building by security. Douglas did this publicity stunt in order to garner attention for his “Extreme Reunion” show taking place on April 28th.

- Amazingly enough, WWE officials did not notice Douglas and did not find out about his stunt until after the show. It was sheer luck that they cut away the camera angle to focus on Cody Rhodes antics distracting Big Show.

- Douglas’ FOOTAGE from the crowd.

- Douglas being ESCORTED OUT of the arena.

- Absolutely not looking forward to the Team Long vs. Team Laurinaitis match at the PPV. Spoiler alert: Zack Ryder gets added to Team Long on Smackdown tonight.

- Also, I am not sure if this is going to get edited out or not but when she was doing introductions for the above match, she announced “Long Island Iced Z”, Jack Swagger.

- Hall of Fame update: Yokozuna is OFFICIALLY announced for the 2012 HOF Class tonight on Smackdown.

- Where was Brodus Clay? I seriously do not get it. Why did they hype him up for weeks at a time only to keep delaying his debut then keep him off television for several weeks because he is too green then bring him back again only to keep him off TV again?

- WWE Hall of Famer Tamara “Sunny” Sytch was backstage at the Smackdown tapings this week visiting. She has publically stated that she is going to attend the WWE events on Wrestlemania weekend in Miami.

- I will let the rumors take a life of their own and I guess you can say that I am contributing to them by posting this but the hell with it. According to his Twitter, Dave Batista is scheduled to participate in the 2012 Nautica South Beach Triathlon in Miami to help raise money for St. Jude’s Charity….on Sunday….April 1st. Hmmmmm????

- In MAJOR WWE NEWS: Apparently Triple H, even though he is denying it on WWE.com , is shutting down Florida Championship Wrestling. DAVE MELTZER is reporting that the gym in Tampa Florida is going to officially close in May and that they have cancelled all of their television programming airing in Florida. The almost ready developmental talents are likely to be brought to Stanford Connecticut to continue training and working with the creative team to come up with ideas for their main roster debuts. An alternate developmental system is being worked on yet no word where it will be set. The goal is to have a system where they can work a series of houseshow loops rather than just shows at their base like they do now in Tampa. WWE is not scrapping developmental altogether as they obviously need a “feeder system” to the main roster but no plan is in place yet on what the new system is going to be.

- To show you how intricate planning goes into Wrestlemania, the set construction inside Sun Life Stadium for Mania has already begin. More than a week in advance.

- Upcoming WWE Hall of Famer Edge confirmed the worst kept secret in wrestling that his lifelong best friend Christian will be inducting him into the Hall of Fame. Edge said that WWE asked him the other day even though they knew what he was going to say and he told them that it wouldn’t make sense if it were anyone else.

- Do you want to guess who ISN’T confirmed for the Hall of Fame yet? The answer is Ric Flair. TNA and WWE are still negotiating his participation in the Hall of Fame. TNA is said to be very lenient in letting him go and just want some compensation for it. No word on what that means but I am assuming financial. WWE will obviously NEVER recognize TNA on the air in exchange for his participation.

- WWE officially announced that Machine Gun Kelly and Flo Rida will perform the entrances of both John Cena and the Rock respectively. Lillian Garcia is confirmed to be signing America the Beautiful when the show starts thus ending the rumor that WWE Superstar David Otunga would get his fiancée Jennifer Hudson to perform.

AW: Flo Rida...Guess WWE really are trying to get Rock booed somewhat...  That said, this Machine Gun Kelly chap isn't going to get Cena cheered with that song...

- With WWE officials happy with the one year build to Rock vs. Cena, the tentative plan is to announce on RAW the day after Mania the main event for next years show. WWE management has been planning and discussing possible candidates and have narrowed it down to a Rock vs. Cena rematch, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s official retirement match possibly vs. The Undertaker (which makes zero sense since Austin should win his retirement match), and Taker vs. Brock Lesnar although they have not begun negotiations with Lesnar yet.

- The Rock has been training with WWE talent Curt Hawkins for his Mania match. The men have been running through matches on the fly on their own time in order to build Rock’s stamina and work on his moves.

- FYI….following RAW this coming Monday, WWE will tape a few matches for Smackdown on Friday. There is no Smackdown taping on Tuesday as the entire roster will be flying to Miami for Mania week. WWE will actually film some live cutaways on Friday and edit them into Smackdown.

- Evan Bourne’s suspension is up and he is free to return to the company. Due to having failed twice, according to the WWE Wellness policy, Bourne is now subject to 12 tests over the next 12 months meaning that if he should fail one single test, his contract will be terminated. No WWE Superstar has failed two wellness tests although William Regal currently has two Wellness related suspensions under his belt hence why he is no longer pushed seriously even though he is one of the best wrestlers on the roster and a close friend of Triple H. If Bourne (or Regal for that matter), once terminated, they will not be able to come back to WWE for one year. Should they be brought back however, they will have a clean slate from a Wellness standard. This is different that other WWE talents. If you currently have a strike against you and you leave, when you return to the company you still have the same amount of strikes as when you left.

- In case you were wondering (which I doubt), Natalya is officially a babyface now. No face turns, no turn on Beth Phoenix or vice versa. She is just back to being a face and Phoenix being a heel. Random, I know.

- CM Punk recently stated in an interview that he has begun attempted to live a Vegan lifestyle similar to Daniel Bryan.

- In what was a cool finish that made the crowd in New York go nuts, at Madison Square Garden last Sunday, Triple H wrestled in a six man tag match with CM Punk and Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler, Chris Jericho and Cody Rhodes. The crowd went nuts as Punk and Jericho fought to the back and Orton and Rhodes were fighting outside the ring. HHH then did the Undertaker throat slash gesture and pinned Ziggler following a tombstone piledriver. Crowd exploded.

- WWE is looking to debut Ryback (Skip Sheffield), Husky Harris, Richie Steamboat, Dean Ambrose, Damien Sandow and Seth Rollins over the next few months. Once again, due to HHH’s mandate, he does not want anyone being called to the main roster without a set storyline in place or an angle to take them.

- The “Once in a Lifetime” special on John Cena vs. The Rock is set to air on 11 NBCU networks beginning on Monday before RAW on USA followed by repeated viewings on SyFy, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, G4, NBC Sports, Mun2, NBCUHD and others leading up to Wrestlemania on Sunday April 1st.

- The June “No Way Out” PPV is going to be an all steel cage match PPV (which is what TNA does with Lockdown). This is LAME and also a horrible idea since cage matches are no longer a draw and it will be taking place the day after the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen UFC Middleweight title fight in Brazil. If you aren’t an MMA fan and don’t read the UFC section below, this is a HUGE fight and historically WWE PPV’s the same weekend of a UFC PPV BOMB.

AW: Can't disagree with what Matt says, although THIS should be the theme song for the show.  As long as Downstait don't cover it that is...

- “Stone Cold” Steve Austin did a VIDEO Q&A on his new website.

- If you are interested in WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hitman” Hart’s original sunglasses that he used to give away at ringside, Hart is now selling them on his official WEBSITE for $25 a pair or $45 for an autographed copy. Hart has said in the past that he would have brought them back when he first returned to WWE years ago however the company that used to make them for him went out of business and he couldn’t find a company that could duplicate them.

- Last week in FCW, the commentary at the television tapings was Jim Ross and William Regal. It was a one time deal since Ross was in town to evaluate talent but from what u understand, they were awesome.

- Former WWE Diva Stacy Kiebler is in discussions with Fox television to become the new host of Simon Cowell’s X-Factor replacing the fired Steve Jones.

- So WWE is planning on revamping their film division which I have been documenting over the past few weeks. One of their bright ideas to do this is to partner with Lionsgate Entertainment to release a remake of the horror movie “Leprechaun”.

- Episode 7 of “ FOREIGN EXHANGE

- Episode 6 of “ ARE YOU SERIOUS ”.

- Episode 7 of “ WWE DOWNLOAD

- Latest WWE “ BACKSTAGE FALLOUT

- Episode 3 of “ WWE OUTSIDE THE RING

- Episode 3 of “ SUPERSTAR TOYZ

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes

- The ending to the TNA Victory Road PPV was one of the best endings to a TNA PPV in quite sometime. The image of TNA Champion Bobby Roode standing over a fallen Sting while he is screaming and cursing at Dixie Carter was awesomeness times 10. If this angle does not get him over as a top heel then nothing will. I do wonder where the hell the entire babyface side of the roster was considering their OWNER WAS PRACTICALLY ASSAULTED. But that is another argument for another day.

- Brother Devon defeated Robbie E to capture the TNA TV title. That title is meaningless anyway. The reason this is notable however is because Brook Hogan was sitting in the front row and actually interfered when Robbie went to nail Devon with a chair. She grabbed the chair preventing it. Not sure where this is going but if it isn’t followed up on then it was a complete waste of time.

- The Motor City Machine Guns are COMING BACK .

- Dixie Carter announced via her Twitter that the June 10th Slammiversary PPV will be held in Dallas Texas at the University of Texas Arlington Arena. Texas is the home of TNA’s parent company Panda Energy. This should be a big show if done correctly as the arena seats 6,500 people.

- Can anyone explain why Sting is interested in placing Hulk Hogan in charge of TNA after Hogan spent the better part of two years “in charge” of TNA with Eric Bischoff as a heel which Sting fought valiantly to remove from power? WTF?

- Just to break down how pointless “trending on Twitter” is, TNA had several names trending on Twitter last week during the Victory Road PPV. By comparison, WWE averages about 5 million viewers during RAW. They get names to trend, etc. TNA roughly averages 10,000 viewers per PPV. Look at that comparison. 5 MILLION to 10 THOUSAND. That is a huge gap. For arguments sake, let’s say an additionally 3,000 people streamed the PPV illegally. That is still 13,000 people, WORLDWIDE. That is not a huge number of people so it doesn’t take a lot to trend on twitter.

AW: An even funnier point would be things trended from the show in the UK.  The UK didn't air the PPV live and wouldn't air until Wednesday.  Anyone watching at the time was going so illegally, and even than that was from midnight until 3am, so it won't exactly have been many doing that.

- Another day, another major RANT on Twitter by Kurt Angle. Angle went on an incoherent tirade on Tuesday via his Twitter account which caused a fan to ask if he was hacked and he said no, it is him. He jumped from a variety of topics including tweeting Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin telling them that it took them 15 years to get over as a main event talent and it took him one. He said he respected them both but could take them in a shoot fight. He tweeted Jim Ross saying he plans on retiring in TNA but wants a main event at Mania one last time. He then went on and on bashing fans who were tweeting him saying he was “messed up”. Great stuff.

- The unprofessionalism by Eric Bischoff towards Jeremy Borash is being turned into an angle.

- Speaking of Bischoff, Nick at Nite has picked up "Daddy's Home" which is an original scripted comedy starring Scott Baio. it is Nick at Nite's first dive into originally programming. The reason I am mentioning this is because the show is produced by Eric Bischoff and Jason Hervey and both are listed as show runners for the series meaning that they are going to oversee the day to day production of the show which will in effect force Bischoff to take a step back from his day to day TNA duties.

- Rob Van Dam is set to return to action at TNA Live Events this weekend. He has not been used in several months and his contract is up shortly. He has told close friends that he is likely not going to re-sign with the company.

- In an example of something that could be yet another failure by TNA unless it is acted upon soon, TNA X-Division Champion Austin Aries contract expires soon as he was initially signed to a short term contract. Aries has taken the spot given to him and run far with it as he is currently the longest reigning X-Division champion in company history. On a side note, Aries, who was the hottest heel in ALL of professional wrestling for a while has been turned babyface. Similar to the Samoa Joe/Magnus face turn. No reason or angle given. He is just a good guy now.

- I am really hoping they go with the angle that Ray Park Esquire is really Abyss unmasked and then they keep him in that gimmick.

- Kevin Nash stated in an interview that if TNA called him asking for him to come back, he would strongly consider it since it is only 50 miles from his house and he can drive there and home in the same day. He also stated that he has a lot more friends there and the schedule is convenient for him as opposed to the WWE schedule.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- ROH is coming in strong for their iPPV on March 30th. Since they are competing with DGUSA as well as local WWE events in Miami, ROH announced that one of their main events for the March 30th show will be Kevin Steen vs. El Generico. If you have not followed their feud including Kevin Steen’s “final” ROH match before his recent return, you need to do some searching because it was an incredible feud.

- I am hearing more and more that ROH is not going to have the patience to let Steen capture the title at Final Battle in December and will likely put it on him sometime this summer. The question is do they transition the title to him or do they put him in with Richards.

AW:   Just wanted to note some WWE-alumni's activities in Japan this past week.  Antonio Inoki's IGF saw Kazuyuki Fujita & Kendo Kashin beat Bob Sapp & Bobby Lashley when Fujita made Sapp tap to the camel clutch and saw Alexander (Vladimir) Kozlov beating Shogun Okamoto (who himself beat Bob Sapp last month) in a surprise as Okamoto is an Inoki project.

Also, in New Japan, Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan retained the IWGP tag titles beating Yoshihiro Takayama & Lance (Hoyt/Vance) Archer when Tenzan hit Archer with a moonsault.

MMA News and Notes

- Tito Ortiz confirmed via his Twitter that he will be fighting his FINAL MMA fight on July 7th in Las Vegas in a fight vs. Forrest Griffin. The two are 1-1 lifetime versus each other. Both wins coming by split decision so this fight is the rubber match. With a loss, it could also be Griffin’s swan song in UFC as his record of late has been less than stellar.

- There is a fan expo scheduled that same weekend and normally UFC announces their annual Hall of Fame inductees during fan expo weekends so it is likely that Ortiz will be inducted.

- UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo is set to defend his title at UFC 149 but no opponent is given yet. His opponent was rumored to be Anthony Pettis however Pettis announced that he is undergoing an undisclosed surgery this week which will keep him unable to compete/train for the next 8 weeks or so. He also stated that he is not moving down in weight and is staying at lightweight.

- While the fight contract has still not been officially signed, UFC has begun filming a countdown special with both Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Shooting for the countdown special began yesterday.

- Protect yourself AT ALL TIMES . I do admit the lack of sportsmanship is bad, it is also legal.

- Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida has been announced as the main event for UFC on FX 4 from Atlantic City on June 22nd.

- Congrats to Matt Serra as he became the first American black belt under Renzo Gracie last week.

- Dana White stated this week that Dan Henderson isn’t just waiting for the winner of Jones/Evans but in fact Henderson has agreed to move down in weight and fight Anderson Silva should Silva beat Chael Sonnen. So basically which ever fight is available first is what he is going to take.

- Also announced by Zuffa this week, 3 upcoming PPV events for Canada. UFC 148 which will be on July 21st from Calgary, UFC 152 on September 22nd in Toronto and UFC 154 on November 17th in Montreal which is likely George St. Pierre’s return to UFC following his knee surgery last year.

- UFC 147 (Silva vs. Sonnen 2) is confirmed for a 80,000 seat stadium in Rio De Janeiro. WOW.

- Lorenzo Fertitta is pushing hard behind the scenes in New York for MMA to pass through legislation. The bill to legalize MMA in NY needs to pass by June or else it is another year without it. Fertitta announced that if MMA becomes legal in June, they will shake up their schedule for the fall and move a currently planned event to Madison Square Garden. He also noted that whenever the first Garden show takes place, it will be a staked show just like UFC 100 was.

- UFC has found a website that illegally streams their PPVs but the catch is that fans must register to stream the PPV. So because of this, UFC is now threatening to sue individual fans who illegally download the shows and are planning on subpoenaing the records of the website for the information.
