T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: Alberto Del Written Out Out of Mania, Possible WM Spoiler, TNA Gives WWE Some Flair, Frank Mir Don't Do Rio, and More

By Matt Dawgs Mar 30, 2012 - 6:15 PM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #151

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE: Apologies for the lateness of this column. It’s been a busy week especially with all the WWE news heading into Mania. It is better for you though since you can get more late breaking news. Side note, if you do not hear from me next week it is because I am $540 million dollars richer and have bought myself an island in the middle of nowhere.

WWE News and Notes

- So that was it? It was the final RAW before the biggest show of the year featuring the biggest main event in WWE history and THAT was it? RAW was absolutely 100% underwhelming with the final angle between The Rock and John Cena was once again paint by numbers. The Rock did manage to keep it a little more serious than he had in previous interviews and his selling line that he HAS TO WIN because he will become the only person to be able to say that they beat Hulk Hogan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and John Cena at Wrestlemania will make him the biggest star in wrestling history is GOLD. But besides that, it was business as usual for both men. Although Cena slamming the point home that he was winning and being kind of smug about it made me feel from a “writer” perspective that someone was told the finish of the match at Mania which was still in flux as of last week. Most people expect Cena to win but from what I understand, Vince McMahon was still up in the air about it. Either way, very ho hum show. Before we get into the details of RAW however, I am going to discuss the Rock vs. Cena special that aired before it.

- The Final Rock vs. Cena confrontation broken up into two parts. PART 1 and PART 2 .

- “Once in a Lifetime” was an incredible show which definitely shined a large spotlight on both the Rock and John Cena. Showing their personal lives and what makes them tick was something special. WWE did a real good job of capturing the kind of person John Cena is. From finally explaining that the dog tags he wears has his mother and brothers names on them to WWE acknowledging that John Cena has granted more wishes for the Make-a-Wish Foundation than any celebrity in HISTORY. That is an incredible feat considering the charity was founded in 1980 and literally hundreds of celebrities and athletes have participated since its inception.

- 14 VIDEO’S of the “Once in a Lifetime” Special.

- Seeing Rock and how he cherishes his heritage and his family was also something to see. For someone so young like the Rock to be named a chief in his home country of Samoa is an incredible blessing. Both he and Cena have a lot to be proud of considering both of them have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. Again, say what you want about Cena as a performer but as a person, the man works hard and knows that he is absolutely blessed to be where he is. I don’t think that there is anyone in wrestling history who works harder than he does. 4 am wake up, radio interview at 5 am, gym at 6 am, 7 am car commercial, 8 am autographs, etc. The guy is a machine.

- MAJOR POSSIBLE WRESTLEMANIA SPOILER: Please highlight the whitened out text to read. WWE has in fact been in serious negotiations over the past 48 hours with former WWE and UFC Champion Brock Lesnar about making some sort of appearance at Wrestlemania on Sunday. No deal has been reached as of this writing however even if none is agreed upon by Sunday, it is virtually a lock that Lesnar will appear and likely wrestle at Wrestlemania 29 in New Jersey. The appearance on Sunday is to help build for his match at Mania 29 which is has verbally agreed to participate in. The tentative plan is for Brock to be involved in the finish of the Rock vs. John Cena match thus setting up next years co-main event of Rock vs. Brock. The Rock was asked about this possibility by Associated Press writer Dan Gelston last SATURDAY . UFC President Dana White confirmed to MMA Mania that Brock Lesnar is officially retired in the eyes of UFC and is no longer contractually obligated to Zuffa meaning he is free and clear to compete in professional wrestling as soon as he wants to. END OF SPOILER.

- So for weeks now I have been stating poor Miz, POOR MIZ. Turns out, it is actually poor Alberto Del Rio and Christian. Del Rio was expected to be announced as the sixth man for Team Laurinaitis this week on RAW. Del Rio confirmed this report during last weekend’s tour of Puerto Rico when he stated in an interview that sometime over last weekend, Vince McMahon personally called Del Rio to tell him that he was off the Mania card. The reason that was given to him is that they wanted his return to television to be a bigger deal than a six man tag and will re-debut him following Mania in a main event program. Before being injured, Del Rio was tentatively penned to be programmed vs. Randy Orton at Mania however was not medically cleared in time to begin shooting the angle for it leading into Mania. He was then penned to be in the six man. As announced on RAW, Miz was put in the match in Del Rio’s place meaning he is wrestling at Mania after all. Christian on the other hand was booked to be in the match but taken out before RAW as he is still not 100% back from his ankle injury. While he is able to walk on it, it is still tender and WWE wants him fully healed before putting him back in the ring even though he can be protected in a multi-person match. WWE wrote him out due to a CM Punk beat down and replaced him with Drew McIntyre.

- What the f*ck was up with Christian’s hair? Holy sh*t!!! He looked like a cross between Justin Bieber and Ellen DeGeneres.

- JOHN LAURINAITIS: “Miz, welcome to team TEDDY!!!!.....(awkward pause)….Johnny. Team Johnny.”

- Everything else on RAW was just there. The Undertaker/HHH/Shawn Michaels video package was well done but that is always expected by WWE production. I just hope that was the end of it and they don’t replay it again at the PPV on Sunday and take away time from another match. We already bought the PPV, no need to recap a feud since you already have our money.

- Triple H TRAINING for Hell in a Cell.

- Did the six-man at the PPV fall off a cliff? No Alberto Del Rio, no Christian, no Rey Mysterio, no Evan Bourne. Instead we get Drew McIntyre and Booker T?

- No way does Cody Rhodes win right? He has gotten the better of Big Show at every single turn in this feud and has completely embarrassed him. He has to lose. Has Big Show ever been IC champion? By the way, can ANYONE EXPLAIN the point of Show squashing the tag team champions by himself? Other than damage the already damaged tag team titles, what was the point of it? Couldn’t Big Show have squashed JTG? The Uso’s? Yoshi Tatsu? Ezekiel Jackson? Plenty of people Show could have beaten, why the champs?

- I like Randy Orton but Orton vs. Kane has to be the least looking forward to match in Wrestlemania history. Is there anyone outside of Orton and Kane’s immediate family that wants to see this match and cares about the outcome? Anyone?

- Why was Brodus Clay on RAW? I get that it was a quick one minute match but he isn’t wrestling at Mania and that time could have went to something else. There was no reason for him to be on the show at all.

- Keep this between us but I am rooting for Daniel Bryan and Sheamus to steal the show even though I think Punk and Jericho will. Bryan has been absolutely awesome in his “Owen Hart” role of being a sneaky, smarmy heel and I think that WWE will keep him in the main event picture even though he is likely losing on Sunday.

- I am still not digging the extra stuff involving CM Punk and Chris Jericho. Really, Punk was born out of wedlock so he is a bastard? That would have been a major deal in a wrestling angle…..in 1982. Now, not so much. Who the f*ck cares? Why can’t they just feud over who is the best and who wants the title more? Is that such a hard thing to book that they had to add additional crap to it?

- Mark Henry is AWESOME. I hope that he gets back into the main event following Mania because him squashing the Great Khali and then KILLING Kofi Kingston following his run in what something else. Also, Khali is becoming more and more immobile as the days go by. I feel bad for the man. Why is he still wrestling?

- The Miz CONFRONTED The Rock following RAW.

- Smackdown was taped BEFORE RAW this week as the entire WWE roster flew down to Miami from Atlanta on Tuesday morning. The show is going to consist of mostly video packages with live cutaways to WWE AXCESS in Miami. They did tape 2 matches with Chris Jericho beating Kofi Kingston CLEAN with the Walls of Jericho and Zack Ryder defeating Drew McIntyre with the Ruff Ryder. Big Show cut a promo about beating Cody Rhodes and Jinder Mahal came out to cut a promo but was interrupted by Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Michaels nailed Mahal with Sweet Chin Music and then HHH pedigreed him to end the show.

- Former WWE Diva Lita was backstage at RAW this week as she lives in Atlanta. She is also set to travel with the WWE roster to Miami as she is going to be at WWE Axcess signing autographs.

- Also backstage was former WCW/WWE Star Diamond Dallas Page. Page lives in Atlanta as well and was visiting friends as many WWE Superstars have been going to Page to learn his yoga techniques which both Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho recommend highly.

- Does Evan Bourne hang himself? Shoot himself in the face? Jump off a bridge? Bourne, who recently completed a 60 day suspension for his 2nd Wellness violation was set to return soon and was even considered for a spot at Team Long at Wrestlemania. Well it now appears that Bourne will not be back for several more months as he broke his ankle and foot in an accident in Florida and needs surgery to repair his foot. No timetable on a return has been given but it will not be for several more months. The accident in question was personal in nature and was did not involve alcohol or drugs.

- Wearing too many hats at once could put a damper on things for WWE Celebrity Maria Menounos. Menounos, the star of Extra, is currently scheduled to team with Kelly Kelly to take on WWE Divas Champion Beth Phoenix and Eve on Sunday at Mania. Problem was that Menounos was not going to be around to film any angles for it on RAW so the Divas all had to travel to Los Angeles to shoot the build up for it. Menounos couldn’t appear at RAW because in addition to her Extra duties, she is also participating on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”. The reason this is a situation now is because apparently Menounos broke a rib during training for Dancing with the Stars and her status on the Mania show is questionable. Ideally she is going to try and compete but WWE may just substitute another diva in her place.

- WEATHER UPDATE FROM MIAMI FOR SUNDAY: High of 86, Low of 68 with only a 10% chance of rain. It is looking good for Sun Life Stadium.

- According to DAVE MELTZER , the main reason The Rock is back in pro wrestling is because he has changed his entire management team. His former management team wanted to keep him as far away from professional wrestling as possible feeling that it would give him a negative stigma. He has hired his ex-wife Dany Garcia (fellow University of Miami graduate and college sweetheart) as his full time manager and CEO of Team Rock. They decided that it would be more beneficial for him to embrace the Rock name and his background if he used it in movies and in wrestling. The plan is to also start their own production company to develop their own movies and television shows called “7 Bucks Entertainment”. The “7 Bucks” name comes from the fact that when he signed his WWE developmental contract in 1996, he only had 7 dollars to his name at the time. I think it is safe to say that he now has significantly more than that.

- The Rock is staying in Miami after Mania as his next film, “Pain and Gain” begins filming there this week.

- For those asking how WWE works at Mania and aren’t in the know, WWE rents out an ENTIRE hotel for the festivities. The whole roster, family of the roster, legends, employees, production people, etc stay at the same hotel and it gets locked down from any outsiders. Unless you work for WWE, you aren’t getting into the hotel. WWE also constructs a wrestling ring INSIDE the hotel for the talents to run through matches, workout, etc. The weekend is catered for the staff so they can eat meals at the hotel if they chose to however they are under no obligation to stay at the hotel under lockdown. Their only responsibilities are to attend whatever WWE has booked them for i.e. Axcess, personal appearances, etc. If they are not booked for something and have spare time on their hands, they are free to go see another wrestling show (so long as they do not appear in front of the camera or audience as in years past, CM Punk has attended ROH shows), go out to eat, visit friends who are in town from other wrestling promotions, etc. Also note however on more than one occasion, a WWE talent has been released for causing a scene in public during Wrestlemania weekend including former WWE talent Rhino being released for having an argument with his wife in the lobby of the hotel one year. The hotel being used this year is the Intercontinental Miami.

- A good CM Punk INTERVIEW hyping Mania.

- In another interview trying to hype Mania, Punk noted that he signed his extension with WWE DURING the Money in the Bank PPV last summer. He stated that the INFAMOUS PROMO that made him a big star was completely ad-libbed and off script. He was given a green light to say what he wanted but he had to give bullet points to Vince McMahon before he went out. He did give McMahon the bullet points and Vince approved them and then when he went out, he completely said something different without touching on any of the bullet points he gave Vince. McMahon was going to pull the plug but heard the crowd reaction and let him run with it. He also noted that when he resigned his contract, he got a raise, a tour bus and got Vince to pay for the rights to use Cult of Personality for him which was his favorite song when he was in Little League in the 80’s.

- CM Punk wrote the following on Twitter: “@steveaustinBSR, 29, son” to which Austin replied: “@CMPunk just worry about 28. If the stars all line up, I always have a big can of Whoop Ass ready to take to NYC. #rogerthat”

- CM Punk’s TOUR BUS that he travels on. As of now, John Cena, HHH, CM Punk, Big Show, and Randy Orton all currently travel via Tour Bus instead of Rental cars during house show loops. They do travel with others on the roster as I know for a fact that Michael Cole travels with Cena on this bus, Kofi Kingston with Punk and Sheamus and Rhodes with Big Show.

- Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli), Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley), Seth Rollins (Tyler Black) and Xavier Woods (Consequences Creed) are all confirmed for Wrestlemania weekend in Miami. They will be wrestling matches at the WWE Axcess convention as well as be on hand for any additional “extra” duty for the show. All four men are the front runners for being called up to the main roster following Mania.

- During media week for Mania, Zack Ryder conducted an interview and confirmed that his friend “The Big O” has actually had two wrestling matches in his life (after Ryder met him) and is training to attempt a WWE career.

- WWE has switched up the inductors for the Hall of Fame this year. Triple H and Shawn Michaels, who were originally going to induct the 4 Horsemen alongside Dusty Rhodes, are now going to induct Mike Tyson. Rhodes will induct the Horsemen alone (and rightfully so). It was rumored that The Rock was going to induct Yokozuna however he is going to be inducted by Rikishi and The Uso’s. Christian is still inducting Edge. Alberto Del Rio inducting his uncle Mil Mascaras. JBL is inducting Ron Simmons. The show will once again be hosted by Jerry “The King” Lawler.

- For television on Monday, WWE is going to air the highlights of Edge, The Four Horsemen and Mike Tyson on the HOF special airing before RAW.

- Some people were wondering but Barry Windham is in Miami for the Hall of Fame ceremony. Windham’s appearance was up in the air due to the stroke/heart attack he suffered a few months back.

- Ric Flair is confirmed for the Hall of Fame ceremony and WWE sent out a press release confirming it. WWE and TNA struck an agreement on to the terms of Flair’s appearance earlier this week. No word on what the deal entails however I do know that TNA wanted some sort of acknowledgment from WWE for the appearance. I have no idea if WWE agreed to that or not. If they didn’t agree to let that happen then TNA is a lot dumber that I expected them to be. In reality, they had WWE by the balls in negotiations so anything short of getting whatever they asked for is insanity.

- Mike Tyson is said to be like a kid at Christmas in Miami this week. For those who do not know, Tyson is a HUGE wrestling fan dating back to before he even watched Boxing. He literally knows the names of people who were in wrestling that most historians don’t remember. He is said to be very down to earth in Miami and very approachable by much of the WWE roster. He especially enjoys hanging out with the legends of WWE who he grew up watching.

- The local ABC affiliate in Miami is reporting that there are over 30,000 out of towners in Miami for Wrestlemania. That is a lot of people considering that Sun Life Stadium is currently set up to hold 65,000 (although WWE will likely announce it on Sunday as 75,000 in attendance).

- WWE hosted a Wrestlemania Premiere Party on Star Island in Miami last night. Star Island is basically an island in the middle of Miami where all the celebrities live. Celebrities who live in the complex include Shaquille O’Neal, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Dwayne Wade, Gloria Estefan, and more. The event was $300 per ticket and featured many of the WWE roster showing off fashion and artwork of theirs which was auctioned off to benefit the children’s oncology wing at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.

- As stated in last week's column, former WWE Star Dave Batista is in Miami and claims that he is there for a Nautica Triathlolon that takes place this weekend in Miami. That could in face be a red herring by him but I have confirmed that there is a triatholon taking place in Miami on Sunday and if you look at the OFFICIAL WEBSITE of the triatholon, Batista is listed as a participant. Just seems like a lot of work to keep him a secret.

- Former WWE Diva (and wife of the Undertaker) Michelle McCool stated on Twitter that she will be in Miami for Wrestlemania this weekend. Also traveling with the WWE crew is the current girlfriend of Miz, former WWE diva Maryse.

- Vickie Guerrero tweeted earlier today that she is so happy for Michelle McCool and her bundle of joy meaning that McCool is in fact pregnant.

- Linda McMahon announced through her Senate campaign that she is in fact going to be in Miami for Wrestlemania weekend.

- WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk has been pulled off all of the WWE Axcess events he was scheduled for this weekend. He recently had knee replacement surgery and his doctors have ruled him out of travelling. His brother, WWE Hall of Famer Dory Funk is still scheduled to participate.

- Former WWE/WCW Star Diamond Dallas Page is in Miami for Wrestlemania.

- Prior to departing for Miami for Mania weekend, former WWE Star JBL tweeted the following: “Been off the road for two years, I’ve been back on it for literally 15 minutes heading to Mania and I am reminded why I HATE IT!!! #hatetravel”

- WWE Management held a “Twitter” meeting before RAW on Monday so that the roster can understand and better utilize #Hashtags when tweeting. No, this is not a made up story I am adding to the column. This really happened.

- Following the meeting, WWE CHAMP CM Punk tweeted the following: "Here's my essential #wrestlemania hashtags: #PMA #cleans #sprints #snatch #twizzlericecreamcake #BITW"

- John Cena tweeted the following PICTURE of him after completing a WWE Wellness test along with the following tweet: “Hey @espn @SportsCenter drug test 7days from the dance. Looks like Aegis also wants to see a clean fight.”

- Chris Jericho’s latest contract was for 6 months and was set to end in July. Chris noted on Twitter that he has signed an extension and will be with WWE through the fall on a full time schedule. He does have a few dates this summer with his band Fozzy in Europe and he may miss a Raw or two but other than that, he is set to work for a while.

- In a recent interview, Kevin Nash noted that he was pulled from his feud with CM Punk last year due to being on the drug Plavix which is a heart medication and a blood thinner. WWE flagged in when doing his medicals and even though it is not banned and his heart ailment is minor, WWE refused to let him work on it. He had to stop taking it and it had to clear his system before they let him wrestle and when they did, it was vs. HHH.

- WWE production edited out last weeks error on Smackdown by Lillian Garcia when she was announcing Zack Ryder for a match. She introduced him as “Long Island Iced Z, Jack Swagger.”

- Not a good sign on the WWE Network but WWE Chief Marketing Executive Michelle Wilson is denying that the WWE had ever had a target date in mind for the network launch. She4 did in fact say that they have hired about 30 full time network employees including several executives and believe they will have about 120 employees total. She also stated that she did not want to go into details but they are in late stages of securing several distribution deals with cable providers.

- The latest Q&A from “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

- Not sure if he is going to get in trouble over this or not but WWE producer/agent “Road Dog” Jesse James revealed via his Twitter that the New Age Outlaws are going to be playable characters in the new Wrestlemania 13 video game and that he and “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn did voiceovers already. The game is expected to feature a ton of Attitude Era characters in it.

- Randy Orton has landed the role as the star of the next WWE “The Marine” film. It is titled “Marine 3: Homefront” and he plays an ex-Marine who has to rescue his kidnapped daughter. Sounds like a remake of Commando. Orton was originally earmarked for the Marine 2 but was injured at the time so Ted DiBiase was given the role instead. This is a straight to DVD project.

- WWE has in fact tapped Hornswoggle to star in the remake of the Leprechaun film which is titled “Leprechaun: Origins” and is set for release in 2013. It is a straight to DVD film.

- WWE is releasing their first ever film, the 1989 movie “No Holds Barred” on DVD for the first time ever in July. The film stars Hulk Hogan and Tiny “Zeus” Lister.

- WWE Diva Layla El returned from injury last week at FCW and wrestled a match. She was said to look like she has improved in the ring and is expected to be back on the main roster following Mania.

- A surprise name was at WWE developmental this week as former WWE and TNA executive Terry Taylor was evaluating talent. Taylor is a name that has come up internally in discussions for the new WWE developmental system.

- HHH has hired Canyon Ceman as the new Senior Director of Talent Relations. He is replacing the recently future endeavored Ty Bailey who held the position. Ceman is a three time All American volleyball player at Stanford University.

- As mentioned last week, former NXT star Husky Harris is set to be called to the main roster following Mania although he will be under a new gimmick/character. He began playing the new role earlier this week in FCW as a heel evangelist/cult leader of some kind.

- In real sad news, former WWE star Kamala the Ugandan Giant, who recently has most of his left leg amputated late last year due to complications from diabetes and high blood pressure will likely have to have his right leg amputated soon as well. Horrible news.

- In answering fan questions via Twitter this week, former WWE talent Carlito Colon (brother to WWE tag champ Primo Colon and cousin to Epico) answered why he is not back with WWE. Carlito said that he is not back in WWE because he refuses to sit on the bench and not be used. He also said he hasn’t went to TNA because they haven’t inspired him which is translation for they suck. He said he has not done ROH because his body cannot hold up to the physical style that they do and that Jim Cornette hates him personally.

- As stated above in the WWE section, TNA has come to an agreement with WWE on the allowance of Ric Flair being used on television for the WWE Hall of Fame. Apparently TNA didn’t ask for much in return however I can confirm that they did request a mention of TNA by WWE at some point (likely by Flair). I am not sure if this was agreed to but I can honestly say that if WWE did not agree then TNA is INSANE for allowing Flair to appear. Sure they would have looked bad if they didn’t but WWE would have looked just as bad for advertising him and then not being able to produce him on television or DVD. So basically TNA had WWE by the balls in negotiations. If they failed, then it is no fault but their own.

- Amazingly enough though, TNA Owner Dixie Carter managed to issue a press release announcing Flair’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and specifically mentioned WWE in it. Funny thing though, The WWE’s official announcement of Flair’s attendance on their website makes no mention of TNA and specifically noted that Flair retired following his loss to Shawn Michaels in 2008 at Wrestlemania XXIV. At what point do we stop feeling sorry for those in TNA?

- Best of luck to TNA executive Bruce Pritchard (Brother Love of WWE fame) as he apparently suffered two heart attacks last week and is recovering at home. Pritchard missed last week’s set of TNA tapings which caused many to speculate backstage as to why however the official word was that he missed the shows for “personal reasons”.

- Kurt Angle “tore his hamstring” which has put his Olympic aspirations in doubt. Not like he had a chance at making it anyway since he is booked to work a steel cage match against Jeff Hardy at the next PPV which is just a few days before the beginning of the Olympic trials. LOL.

- Angle was also on TMZ this week as apparently his mother was scammed out of $4,000 by someone in the Dominican Republic. According to TMZ, the scammer claimed that one of her grandchildren was in a local jail and had she not sent $4,000 to get him out, there would be severe consequences. Sadly, she sent it and then was asked for another $4,000. She then called Kurt Angle who contacted authorities. It was revealed that her grandson (not Kurt’s kid) frequently visited the D.R. however had not been there for quite a while and was fine. Authorities believe the scammer in D.R. was working with someone in the Pittsburgh area since they knew the family had money and was able to get her phone number considering it isn’t listed.

- Dixie Carter announced earlier today that she has signed Sting to a new talent contract meaning he is not retiring anytime soon and is likely remaining on the active roster for at least another year. There go fans hopes that he has at least one WWE run before he retires.

- Chris Sabin has been medically cleared to return to action meaning that the Motor City Machine Guns are expected back on television fairly soon. They were originally set to feud with a heel Samoa Joe and Magnus but now that Joe and Magnus are babyfaces that idea is scrapped.

- I still do not get why Dixie Carter or even Sting for that matter is content with Hulk Hogan being the authority figure in TNA when it was just a few short months ago that they were working to remove him and Eric Bischoff from power. It is mind blowingly stupid booking. I thought Russo left?

- Hogan is expected to address the TNA roster on television next week. UGH.

- Official INVITATION to the wedding of Eric Young and ODB.

- Former WWE star “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters is still lobbying for a roster spot in TNA. He is currently working with TNA in the TNA India project Ra Ka King.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Virtually all of the below wrestling action which basically has every important independent wrestler in the United States in Miami Florida for Wrestlemania weekend. Tons of shows, autograph signings, etc. So if you happened to be in Miami for Mania, bear in mind that there is a ton of stuff to do and your weekend should be packed as everyone worked diligently to separate their shows so that fans can attend as many as possible. If you did not manage to score Mania tickets but live in the area, you’ll want to try and see Dragon Gate USA or Ring of Honor which are both running iPPV’s this weekend.

MMA News and Notes

- Strikeforce 135 lb Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey has stated that she is going to train at the Caesar Gracie academy with Nick and Nate Diaz to improve her game. That is going to be scary.

- Frank Mir recently noted that he was offered a fight vs. Fabricio Werdum in Rio De Janeiro but turned down UFC mainly out of fear. Not fear for losing but fear for his safety. Mir stated that when he travels for a fight, he travels with his wife and children and that he was fearful of what might happen in Brazil due to the Nogueira injury. He says he does not think he is as hated as Chael Sonnen is in Brazil but he didn’t think he’d be able to go out to dinner in Brazil with his wife or walk the streets without being hassled or worse.

- While in Las Vegas for a press conference announcing UFC 146, Alistair Overeem, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson, & Antonio Silva were all surprised drug tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The NSAC was planning on testing Overeem and decided to test them all since they were all there. Obviously no one is expected to fail but if someone does, it will be a big deal since minus Silva; they are all fairly big names.

- Overeem was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and mandatory anger management courses for pie facing a woman at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas on January 2nd.

- Overeem also announced that he is moving his training camp from Las Vegas to Florida to train with the “Blackzillians”.

- Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal had his hearing in Nevada regarding his steroid test failure and he was suspended for 9 months and fined $39,000. He was then promptly released from his Strikeforce contract due to going off the handle via Twitter on NSAC commissioner Patricia Lundvall as he called her a “racist b*tch” claiming she judged him before he even got a chance to speak. Dana White immediately released him from his contract and that is a HUGE blow to him as it effectively cuts off any income he was making and he is already in the six figures as far as medical bills due to his knee surgeries (now up to 10 so far) since Zuffa is not handling those expenses as it was a pre-existing condition. It is likely that King Mo’s MMA career has come to an end as there is no real place for him to make good money and his knee if far from being healed. Mo was recruited by WWE prior to his MMA start as he was a stand out college wrestler and was one win away from making the Olympics. He was recruited from college by Gerald Brisco and is a HUGE wrestling fan but decided on MMA because he didn’t want to go into wrestling and then have regrets about never trying MMA. Now that he has and has been successful, he will definitely consider going to WWE.

- King Mo recently opened up about his staph infection that almost killed him and almost cost him his leg via amputation. He stated that with all the surgeries and all the pain he has been in, he was extremely close to stopping his medication without telling anyone for hope that he would just die. That is insanity that he would have rather died than continue trying to save his life.

- Former UFC fighter Phil Baroni is interested in giving professional wrestling a try. He is in the same boat as King Mo in that he wanted to wrestle professionally growing up but thought it would be in his best interests if he tried MMA first.

- Jake Shields is moving up to Middleweight from Welterweight as he is having trouble cutting down to Welterweight. Shields was a former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion before coming over to UFC to fight at Welterweight.

- Dana White announced that his goal is to host an event in China at the Venetian hotel in Macao before 2013.

- White also confirmed that Dan Henderson is absolutely next in line for a title shot at either the winner of Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen or Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans. He has his pick of the title he wants to go after.

- Dana White told MMA weekly that Fedor Emelianenko is never going to fight in the UFC regardless of what he does fighting independently for the next few months or years. He stated he gave Fedor’s people an incredible offer that was far and above anything he has ever offered a fighter and he was laughed at for it. Now that he lost a few fights, who is laughing now.

- Just throwing this out there but Dana White confirmed that Brock Lesnar is officially retired from MMA as far as he is concerned and contractually free and clear to compete in professional wrestling again.

- Jason “Mayhem” Miller has announced that he will retire from MMA if he loses to CB Dollaway at UFC 146 on May 26th.

- As tough as a fight as it was, UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson is in 100% support of Frankie Edgar getting a rematch vs. Henderson. Henderson stated this week that it is CRIMINAL to not give him a rematch considering he has given two rematches to opponents when he was champion. Henderson realizes that you already have Anthony Pettis waiting in the wins and it will thus create a logjam at the top of the division if he does get a rematch but it would be unfair not to give him one.

- The winner of the Martin Kampmann vs. Jake Ellenberger fight on June 1st at the TUF finale is likely the next in line for a shot at the winner of Carlos Condit/GSP fight tentatively scheduled to take place in November/December.
