T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #154

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

MATT NOTE: R.I.P. to longtime television personality Dick Clark who passed away on Wednesday at age 82. New Years Rockin Eve will never be the same again.

WWE News and Notes

- RAW was pretty bad this week. The only redeeming qualities on this show was a good CM Punk vs. Mark Henry match and an ok Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston match capped off with an AMAZING Brock Lesnar interview. Everything else on the show just fell off a cliff and was horrible.

- As announced on Monday, John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar will be an Extreme Rules match meaning no DQ or Count Out and anything goes. That is translation for “Brock cannot wrestle a straight singles match yet so we are going to use smoke and mirrors to hide his weaknesses as well as his out of shapeness.”

- Brock Lesnar’s BACKSTAGE INTERVIEW was fantastic. This was one of the best things that WWE has ever done. Complete GOLD. Brock is on his game when it comes to being a douche bag bully and actually had one of the best runs of his career playing this character when he was aligned with Mr. McMahon and bullying one-legged Zack Gowen around amongst others.

- Apparently THIS is a photo of Brock in his new wrestling gear. It was rumored to be on WWE.com but has since been removed. I didn’t see it when it was posted so I am not officially confirming that this is it. Either way, if it is not it, it is likely that Brock will get to wear sponsors on his ring gear as he currently has them on the back of his Brock shirt which makes him the first WWE Superstar to have this.

- WWE FLASHBACK: Lesnar dominates a rookie Cena.

- WWE FLASHBACK: Lesnar lays out Cena in 2005

- Those R-Truth skits backstage is easily in the top 5 of the worst wrestling related segments I have seen this year. God awful stuff from beginning to end.

- Where was Miz? He was shown last week in a throwaway segment walking into John Laurinaitis office and then not shown again. This week he didn’t even appear on the show.

- Why in the world does WWE continue to bury the tag team champions and tag team division? Does no one in creative remember when the tag team division was GOLD? The Hardy’s, Edge & Christian, The Dudley’s, the APA, The New Age Outlaws, Too Cool, Los Guerreros, Edge & Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle and He Who Shall Not Be Named, The Worlds Greatest Tag Team. Good times for a long time. Then everything just ended. Ugh.

- So did Abraham Washington move on? He was originally scouting Mark Henry but is now scouting Big Show and Khali? Really? Was there any reason to squash Primo and Epico? Couldn’t they have used any two jobbers?

- YES!! YES!! YES!!

- AJ is hot in the girl next door kind of way. Little known fact, when I went to train in New Jersey a FEW YEARS AGO , she was in the ring training that day. She can work.

- John Cena is putting in his work. Loses to the Rock, Loses to Lord Tensai on RAW, Losing to Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules because honestly any other finish of that match will be BAD BOOKING. He is doing business that is for sure.

- Speaking of, time to ditch this Lord Tensai project. It just isn’t working. Bad gimmick all around for a man who is a solid hand in the ring. I never though A-Train was a main event act when he was around but he left a long time ago so I was all for him getting a shot at the main event picture upon his return. But the act isn’t clicking. Just pull the plug and change the gimmick or move him to the mid-card.

- While on the subject of gimmicks that don’t work, I am officially announcing that I have left the Brodus Clay bandwagon. When the gimmick debuted, I hated it. After a few weeks, I understood it and hated it a little less. Still didn’t love it mind you, but didn’t hate it. Now, I am just not with it. It sucks and so does he.

- Who was the head trainer in developmental when David Otunga was signed? Was it Bill DeMott? I am asking because I find it mind boggling that Otunga has been with WWE for several years now yet looks like he does not know how to take a bump. That is DAY ONE of wrestling school.

- I am slowly resigning to the fact that Dolph Ziggler is just going to be used as “the good hand” or “the mechanic”. The man that they are going to put in spots to get good matches out of people all the time; nothing more, nothing less.

- Zack Ryder. LOL.

- The Bella Twins are on the WWE European Tour and expected to be written off of television soon. They shot an angle for WWE.com where Nikki Bella challenges Beth Phoenix to a title match for this coming RAW on Monday.

- WWE NXT has been on the air for 59 weeks now. WHAT THE F*CK!!!!!! End it already.

- Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli of ROH fame) makes his Smackdown debut tonight!!! YAY!!!!

- POOR Lillian Garcia.

- Is it me or does it seem like Alberto Del Rio is ALWAYS in the wrong place at the wrong time? Last year they wanted to put the title on him but decided to hold off. So they held off and were planning on doing it the following month. Then they held off again and decided to do it at Wrestlemania. Then Edge was going to retire so they decided to hold off at Mania so Edge can get the win at the PPV. Then they were going to have him win the title at the next PPV but decided that Christian winning in Edge’s honor was the better story so they went with that. Then he didn’t win a title for a few months. When he did, he only held the title for a few months when the original plan was a long title reign. Then he got injured and missed a few weeks. Now he is back and was supposed to feud with Sheamus for the World title but Daniel Bryan got so over with the crowd that they are holding off on it. WOW does it suck to be Del Rio.

- If you are wondering why Alberto Del Rio is now a full time member of the Smackdown brand, it is explained tonight by John Laurinaitis that he traded him from RAW for future considerations.

- Christian returned to action during the European Tour this week teaming with Mark Henry.

- Not exactly sure what is up but I hope for the best, William Regal announced via his Twitter that he had to depart the WWE European Tour following the Smackdown taping in order to tend to family business.

- Actor Sean Hayes who co-starred on RAW last week as one of the Three Stooges BLASTED WWE on the Conan O’Brien show saying that he did not like the experience and wouldn’t be caught dead at a WWE event in the future. In response, CM Punk wrote on Twitter: “Holy crap, so the douche who's playing Larry in the stooges movie says he was embarrassed to be on raw? But he's in the stooges movie?!!??"

- WWE announced this week via press release that Wrestlemania 28 garnered 1.3 million PPV buys setting the new company record for buys surpassing Mania 23 which was the Donald Trump Mania. They also set the PPV sales record for a one day event globally with $67 million dollars (including buys via their website for streaming online).

- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has his first new endeavor headed by his production company. Johnson will executive produce a new reality television program titled “The Hero” and will feature three teams of ordinary people that are sent on a high stakes global adventure across three continents to prove what they are able to overcome, sacrifice and undergo for the strength of their team. He will also appear on camera for a few episodes in some capacity. ARTICLE HERE .

- It is looking more and more like rapper Flo-Rida may actually be wrestling a match for WWE as he recently shot a YouTube video of him training in a gym for Heath Slater and now the two have been exchanging in a war of words via Twitter.

- In what comes as surprise news, it appears that Edge’s WWE contract expires at the end of the month. Now while in no way do I think he is going to go to TNA since I am convinced he is retired for good and does not plan on wrestling again, I would have thought that WWE would lock him into a deal similar to Shawn Michaels or Steve Austin where he will be under contract as an ambassador to WWE in some capacity. While WWE still could negotiate that with him, considering he was just inducted into the Hall of Fame and has been such a major name with the company for sometime, I am surprised that this has slipped under the cracks.

- The latest on Evan Bourne is that he cannot come back before NOVEMBER at the earliest and that is not 100% locked in stone yet. It may be longer but definitely not sooner.

- Dean Ambrose worked a dark match defeating Alex Riley before RAW. Also, Seth Rollins (formerly Tyler Black) is travelling with the WWE through Europe this week.

- While on the subject of Ambrose, Mick Foley wrote a BLOG about the whole feud with Ambrose and is now bordering the fine line between work and shoot. Read the blog at the link above and let me know where you fall on this angle. Originally it was a work. But now, is it a worked-shoot? Or straight shoot?

- British wrestler/high flier Pac (who wrestles for Dragon Gate USA) received a tryout prior to RAW on Monday.

- The new plan for the WWE Developmental in Stanford is for that location to be run by Terry Taylor and be a “finishing school” where wrestlers who are about to be called to the main roster.

- Fit Finlay has NOT signed to return to WWE yet as an agent but he was brought to Wrestlemania weekend since he was in the area at Wrestle Reunion to discuss his return. Details haven’t been finalized yet but he is expected to rejoin the promotion sometime this summer.

- Vickie Guerrero was genuinely surprised as the WWE live event in Nottingham England over the weekend. Her birthday was on Monday (she turned 44) and following the main event of CM Punk defeating Chris Jericho, John Cena, Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger and Punk called Guerrero to the ring in front of the live crowd to her shock (since they broke kayfabe) and while the crowd was signing Happy Birthday, CM Punk smashed a cake in her face. They all then posed together in the ring as she was laughing and smiling it up. I enjoy when WWE does classy things like this as obviously they did not have to acknowledge her birthday or do anything publically for her.

- The July 23rd episode of Raw will be episode 1,000. WWE is expecting to do something big for that show.

- In what might be cause for concern, WWE stock closed at their LOWEST PRICE since April 2003 at $7.96 cents per share. That isn’t good folks.

-The new internal target date for the WWE Network is between October and December of 2012 although in all honesty, that now may get pushed into 2013.

- Episode 62 of “ Z! True Long Island Story

WWE “EXTREME RULES” PPV is on Sunday, April 29th and the line-up is as follows:

  • John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar in an Extreme Rules Fight.
  • WORLD TITLE: Sheamus © vs. Daniel Bryan In a 2 out of 3 falls match
  • WWE TITLE: CM Punk © vs. Chris Jericho in a Chicago Street Fight.
  • Randy Orton vs. Kane in a Falls Count Anywhere match.

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes

- Not getting the whole Eric Bischoff thing. I understand he needed to be written out as he is launching his own beer company as well as the new Scott Baio television sitcom and that is all well and good but how in the world did he lose the rights to HIS OWN Last Name? WTF? He can no longer use it in any fashion including television? Seriously, this is an angle? Who thought this made sense?

- Bruce Pritchard returned to TNA over the weekend at the Lockdown PPV. Pritchard has been out for about 3 weeks due to recovering from a heart attack. He has lost 31 pounds since the heart attack(s).

- Former TNA star Chris Harris was backstage at Lockdown visiting.

- Frankie Kazarian, who was released from WWE once for not agreeing to cut his hair per WWE management’s request, cut his hair prior to the TNA Lockdown PPV thus changing his trademark look with no fanfare.

- Bobby Roode cut his hair following the Lockdown PPV and now has a new look which debuted on Impact last night. Roode cut his long hair and thus trademarked look with no fanfare.

- Both men above could have easily done an angle putting their hair on the line and drawn a rating or a small buyrate. But whatever, who am I to tell a company that is bleeding money how to do business.

- Hulk Hogan’s big announcement on Impact for those who missed it is that Impact will now hold an “Open Fight Night” once per month where a non-TNA affiliated wrestler can try to earn a roster spot by challenging anyone in the TNA roster including champions. Three judges (one being Hogan) will then vote on the wrestlers performance and decides whether or not that person will receive a TNA contract.

- Hogan also stated that the TNA TV title held by Devon will be defended WEEKLY on Impact.

- So Kurt Angle missed the Olympic trials due to injury. He then said TNA was his priority but he needs to heal up. So what does Angle do? The day after a very good match with Jeff Hardy, he wrestles on Impact. Amazing.

- Dixie Carter noted that with the new extension with Spike TV, there are going to be several changed implemented in the presentation of Impact over the next few months. There will be format changes, presentation changes and new elements added to the show. The plan is also to incorporate the younger talent more.

- Carter also noted that she does not think that two hours of television is enough for TNA. This completely blows my mind. Dixie Carter is following the exact same blueprint that WCW did when they were on top of the wrestling world. Impact is NOT on top of the wrestling world so why bother following in the footsteps of a company that doomed themselves by over saturating their product? Back in the 90’s, WCW was dominating the ratings war and Eric Bischoff and Turner Executives saw monster ratings and decided, “why only have one monster rating per week when we can have 2!!!” So therefore they created WCW Thunder which added way too much television time and irreparably damaged the product to the point where they were hemorrhaging money. TNA is already a money losing product. Adding another show, which Carter readily admitted that when TNA goes on the road for Impact, it costs them around $500,000 an episode so I am assuming Impact costs around $200,000, is going to burn a hole in their budget. She did say that she believes that 12 PPV’s per year are too much for TNA and expects that number to be lowered in the next year or two. That is a smart move since their PPV’s draw less than 10,000 buys.

- Dixie Carter announced that there will be a BIG SURPRISE at the Slammiversary show on June 10th.

- Hulk Hogan finally sold his Florida mansion (best known for being the location for his VH1 Reality series Hogan Knows Best). He had put it on the market shortly before his divorce from wife Linda for $25 million dollars. The mansion closed last week for….$6.2 million. WOW, he took a huge hit. At least the buyer purchased the home IN CASH. Hogan had bought the house in 1992 for $2,000,000/00 and then demolished the house and built a new one on the property.

- Traci Brooks has been removed from the TNA Roster page which normally signals that talent has been released from the company. She has not been used on television since January.

TNA SACRIFICE PPV is on Sunday May 13th from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA IMPACT TITLE: Bobby Roode © vs. Rob Van Dam
  • A.J. Styles vs. Kurt Angle

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Wrestle Reunion which is run by Sal Corrente stated on Monday that he will no longer be running wrestling conventions due to the heavy losses he suffered over the weekend in Toronto. Wrestle Reunion has been a staple of Wrestlemania weekend where several legends and non-WWE performers host autograph signings, Q&A sessions, wrestling seminars, etc. They also run major conventions in Los Angeles which hosts Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and ROH Shows. Corrente stated that this past weekend’s convention in Toronto did not have nearly the amount of fans they planned for nor the significant revenue they thought to bring in. It was a disappointment and that was coming off their last Los Angeles show which also saw numbers down. Thankfully for him his Wrestlemania weekend show did good business.

- Ring of Honor returns to Toronto with the debut of Finlay. Finlay will take on Roderick Strong. The show should be a stacked card as Rhino returns vs. Eddie Edwards, Lance Storm is taking on Mike Bennett in a return match from Wrestlemania weekend and the Briscoes defend the ROH Tag Team Titles vs. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team of Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.

- TNA X-Division Champion Austin Aries was critical of Ring of Honor in a recent interview saying that the company is a “shell of it’s former self” and a “far cry from the days of CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and himself.” He says he likes to call it “Smoky Mountain of Honor” (a reference to Jim Cornette having power in ROH. Aries HATES Cornette.) and ends by saying “they pay so little that they can’t secure their talent and that it is only a matter of time before talent moves elsewhere.”

- Several Evolve talents are in hot water as the Toronto show last weekend had to be completely rebooked as many talents who were warned ahead of time about past legal issues getting across the border, ended up being stopped at the border and forced to return back to the United States. Evolve owner Gabe Sapolsky was said to be furious at the entire ordeal and is likely to punish everyone who did not make the show except Cheech who had no legal issues but was traveling with someone turned away at the border thus had to return to the US.

- Just a quick question to ROH fans out there (and I know I should have just emailed fellow columnist James Bullock for the answer but I want to see who knows this without looking it up), who has had the longest ROH World Title reign in the company? I know it is either Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) or Nigel McGuiness as both are the only two on the roster to hold the title for a full calendar year. I think the answer is Nigel but I am not sure.

ROH WRESTLING is THIS SUNDAY from Dayton Ohio and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH CHAMP Davey Richards © vs. Adam Cole.
  • ROH TAG TEAM CHAMPS: The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) © vs. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin)
  • ROH TV CHAMP: Roderick Strong © vs. Jay Lethal- Best of Three Falls.
  • El Generico vs. Kyle O'Reilly
  • Kevin Steen vs. BJ Whitmer

ROH WRESTLING is on Saturday, April 28th from Chicago Illinois and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TAG TEAM CHAMPS: The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) © vs. Jigsaw & Hallowicked
  • Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) vs. ROH CHAMP: Davey Richards © & Kyle O'Reilly
  • The All Night Express vs. ROH TV CHAMP: Roderick Strong © & Michael Elgin
  • Kevin Steen & Jimmy Jacobs vs. El Generico & BJ Whitmer
  • Jay Lethal & Adam Cole & TJ Perkins vs. The Colony - Lucha Rules.
  • The Young Bucks vs. The Bravados

MMA News and Notes

- Dana White isn’t exactly a happy camper as he is likely going to have to MOVE the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen Middleweight Title fight from June 23rd due to the United Nations holding a conference in Rio De Janeiro the same week. That would put a huge damper on the UFC event because many hotels will be locked up that week as well as police street closures, etc which will handcuff UFC from running without any hitches. The tentative plan is to move the fight to Las Vegas. While still a mega fight, the Brazil atmosphere would have made it seem bigger than it was. White is also considering moving the show a week earlier or a week later but moving it forward a week would put only one week in between two UFC PPV’s and that would definitely be a financial blow to the July 7th show which is Tito Ortiz’s retirement show.

- White also confirmed that despite the huge fan petition and outcry, should Alistair Overeem not be able to fight Junior Dos Santos, Mark Hunt WILL NOT be getting the title shot in his place.

- Hopefully this isn’t a detriment but during one of his last days of training camp for Rashad Evans tomorrow night Jon Jones managed to spar ended with former professional boxer Roy Jones Jr. (no relation). Jones Jr. in his prime was pound for pound one of the best boxers in the world. I am just hoping that Jon Jones doesn’t try to pick up any last minute pointers that throw him off his game plan.

- Tito Ortiz is lobbying for a job in the UFC front office once his retirement fight is over. He is looking for something similar to Chuck Liddell. He has been offered a job as an MMA analyst for ESPN but he is waiting to interview for UFC first.

- B.J. Penn did an interview in Sweden this week and stated that he still considers himself retired. He did not close the door on fighting again but as of right now, he does not envision any fight that he would come back for. He believes he is done and is enjoying staying home in Hawaii with his kids and working on opening his own MMA gym out there.

- Hector Lombard, the Bellator Middleweight Champion is likely leaving Bellator at the end of the month when his contract expires to join UFC. Lombard is considered the best middleweight in the world who’s last name isn’t Silva. His career MMA record is 31-2 with both losses coming via close decision. He also has 1 draw and 1 no-contest. He is currently on a 24 fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2006 to Gegard Mousasi.

- Bobby Lashley is in negotiations to join Bellator.
