T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #157
Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...
CLUB WWI NEWS:
GO LISTEN.
CLUB WWI
!!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!
WWE News and Notes
- Raw seems to be treading on water because other than one MAJOR return this show was WEAK.
- PAUL HEYMAN IS AWESOME!!!! This man “gets it” and is one of the best promo guys in the history of the business. He absolutely is a guy who can make you hate him when in fact you likely want to cheer for him. His promo did more for Brock Lesnar getting over as a heel than anything John Laurinaitis has done. The tentative plan is to have Heyman along with Lesnar from now until Summerslam. That way you can have Heyman appear on television as Brock’s representative and not have to waste Brock’s appearances by having him there. Heyman signed a short term deal so he is in fact under contract. The deal to come back was reached last week.
-
HEYMAN’S RETURN
.
Lesnar’s comment transcribed: "I came back to bring legitimacy to WWE. That's exactly what I did. And how was I rewarded? With the same corporate BS and politics that led me to leave eight years ago. I don't regret what I did to John Cena. I embarrassed him. Another guy I embarrassed was Triple H. He's always been jealous of me. He lasted one hour in a cell with Undertaker but he couldn't last one minute with me. I had an agreement with the company and he broke it so I broke his arm. I don't care about him, you people or the corporate suits at WWE because I, Brock Lesnar, am never coming back. Because I, Brock Lesnar, quit."
- Heyman told WWE.com that Lesnar is still owed MILLIONS by WWE. The website also moved Lesnar’s profile to the alumni section of the site. My assumption, and this is just a guess, but knowing Vince McMahon, this storyline is going to turn into a lawsuit which will have Lesnar LOSE and be forced to come back to WWE. This would be Vince’s way of “getting back” at Lesnar for beating him in court when he left the company the first time.
- John Laurinaitis is awesome. There is just something about him when he f*cks up that still makes him awesome. In case you missed it on Monday, he talked about signing Brock Cena. Yes, those were his words. Also awesome was his gloating about his career in Japan. He claimed he was the Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin or the Rock of Japan. For those who have no clue about his history, you might believe that. He was FAR from it. Not to say he wasn’t successful in Japan, because he was. But not on the level he claims. He is totally in the zone as this heel character and in my eyes is close to Eric Bischoff RAW GM levels in heelness. For the record, Bischoff on RAW is still my favorite heel authority figure.
- WWE went into panic mode realizing that Sheamus is no where near as hot as they had hoped to be and Alberto Del Rio hasn’t had enough time to catch fire as a contender for him since Sheamus was kept with Daniel Bryan an additional month. Since the PPV is only two weeks away, WWE did not have time to build Del Rio up more or make Sheamus a better babyface so they decided to call an audible and add Chris Jericho and Randy Orton into the title mix. Not for nothing but has there ever been two guys in the main event that have gotten burnt so badly by bad booking as Sheamus and Del Rio? Sheamus was supposed to get super over with the 18 second title win at Mania (according to WWE hierarchy) and instead flamed out ASAP since EVERYONE LOVES Daniel Bryan. As for Del Rio, his title history has been well documented with the start/stop pushes and false hopes for a title reign. I am assuming that he is no longer set to win the title and the belt will either remain on Sheamus or be moved to Orton or Jericho at the PPV. Amazing.
- The Mason Ryan segment where he was watching Dolph Ziggler’s match is a tease for an alliance. During this past weekends live events, Ryan was accompanying Dolph Ziggler to the ring in the role of his bodyguard. It was a test run to see how the two work together. There is no confirmation with this as on Twitter, Abraham Washington wrote that Mason Ryan contacted his office so they are tossing around ideas for him.
- Poor Miz. Ugh.
- If you noticed, without any explanation, WWE has apparently pulled the plug on the Brodus Clay/Hornswoggle alliance. Weird.
- WWE had tentatively penciled in a CM Punk vs. Lord Tensai match for Summerslam. After their horrible chemistry together on Monday, they may rethink that. Tensai is NOT WORKING people. The gimmick is dying a slow and painful death.
- Really amazing that John Cena was not at RAW and appeared live via satellite yet somehow managed to get to the arena in time for the dark match main event that took place after Raw went off the air.
- WWE almost killed their angle. Last Saturday afternoon,
WWE.com
reported that Triple H was in fact going to require surgery on his “broken” arm. So imagine everyone’s surprise when late Saturday evening, he accompanied boxer Floyd Mayweather to the ring for his world title fight vs. Miguel Cotto and his arm was not in a sling and he raised one of Floyd’s titles above his head during introductions. He did have some sort of small brace on the arm which was barely noticeable. That was BAD. But….WWE tried to salvage it by getting exclusive comments from HHH about the appearance where they noted that he is wearing a "mechanical brace that offers various ranges of motion and, fortunately, versatile enough to remove for media photo opportunities while in attendance for the major boxing event."
- Interesting
GROUP
of people.
- Do you guys remember when CM Punk was going to accompany UFC Star Chael Sonnen to his main event fight on FOX but was denied by Vince McMahon? Funny, no? And before someone mentions the report floating around that WWE officials felt that it would hurt his star power since he wouldn’t be mentioned on television for being there, no one mentioned HHH being in Floyd Mayweather’s corner. The announcers did mention Justin Bieber and 50 Cent in the corner though.
- Do you guys also remember last summer in the WWE version of the “Summer of Punk” when CM Punk was anti-establishment and wanted change in WWE and all that good stuff? Now he is the champion and the company poster boy on television and isn’t looking to make change.
- CM Punk landed in some hot water with management last week due to a twitter comment. Punk was doing promotional work for WWE Monday morning in North Carolina when the host brought up Amendment 1 in the state which is a controversial state law being discussed that bans gay marriage. Punk disagreed with the proposed law and stated that anyone should be able to marry anyone else, etc. A twitter followed from the UK tweeted Punk that he disagrees and that marriage should be between a man and a woman only and that the thought of homos made him sick. Punk then replied with: “Go kill yourself.” He then told another person to “drink some bleach”. Later on following RAW, Punk wrote the following: “I was pretty worked up today. The amendment 1 situation had me all wound up. I stand by my thoughts on gay marriage 100%. How I defended that stance was 100% wrong. I admit it. You can't stoop to others levels. Sometimes I fight fire with fire and it isn't ways the best way," "To @ezeekay: I apologize. I don't want you to kill yourself. I want you to better yourself. Just as I want to better myself. "I'll start by being the better man and once again, apologize for my harsh reaction to your opinion of homosexuals making you "sick." "Sorry y'all. If I let anybody down, I apologize. I'll make it up to ya and move forward with a better understanding of others feelings.#pma."
- In other Punk news from RAW, he tweeted the following: "Dirtsheets need to report that I have cilantro in my teeth. Then swallow tacks."
- WWE.COM has posted an
ARTICLE
chronicling the feud between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan dating back to their independent days including using photos from ROH.
- In an interesting news tidbit that is sure to raise eyebrows, WWE.com has added Rob Van Dam back to the alumni section of their website. RVD was removed when he signed with TNA Wrestling and currently is still employed there.
- In what is not great news for John Cena, he has filed for divorce from his high school sweetheart and wife of 3 years, Liz Huberdeau claiming his marriage is “irrevocably broken”.
SOURCE.
It is bound to be a battle for Cena but more so for his soon to be ex. She has hired Miami attorney Raymond Rafool better known as the attorney who took Hulk Hogan for 70% of his assets in his divorce to wife Linda. What separates Cena from Hogan is that his wife signed a pre-nup when they married which not only keeps his earnings but has a clause that allows him to take back any and all gifts and presents given to her. Apparently Cena’s net worth is $18,000,000.00
- WWE has begin a new viral marketing campaign titled “The Revolution is Coming” but no word on what the campaign is about or whether it will make it to television. No word on what the campaign is for whether it be the Network or a debut of someone new or even a returning superstar. They have been very hush hush about the whole deal but it is said that WWE officials are excited about it.
- A good piece of evidence that the WWE Network needs more than several months to launch is Oprah Winfrey. WWE and investors like to name drop Winfrey’s network when discussing the launch but the fact is, Winfrey, who has a personal net worth that is more than WWE as a company has, is failing at owning her own station. The OWN channel has posted a net loss of $300,000,000/00 to date and industry insiders do not expect the network to last another year unless they get a huge following somehow. OUCH.
- Beginning on July 2nd, RAW tapings will now begin 90 minutes before the scheduled start time. Currently, tickets to RAW tapings state that the show begins 45 minutes before start time.
- Husky Harris also worked the weekend live events wrestling under the name Bray Wyatt. UGH. What is with WWE changing people’s names all the time and what is with the crappy names being used?
- Independent wrestling star “Bulldozer” Brody Lee has reported to FCW this week. Lee is 6’7 and the Brody name comes from Bruiser Brody who he emulates in his appearance.
- Kassius Ohno (formerly Chris Hero in ROH) is out of action indefinitely after suffering a cervical sprain after landing on his head during a dive in FCW.
- Dustin “Goldust” Runnels has been released from the company. He was working backstage as an agent for the past year however was released due to an incident at Smackdown on April 24th. Rhodes was the agent in charge for a tag team match involving Darren Young & Titus O’Neal vs. Ezekiel Jackson & Yoshi Tatsu. Apparently Rhodes came up with the finishing move for O’Neal & Young and when executed,
ALMOST KILLED
Tatsu. It was said to look worse in person than it did on television. WWE management felt that Rhodes should have known better than to allow such a move to happen in the match and let him go.
- WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin signed a deal with CMT along with his own production company “Broken Skull Productions” to host a reality show called “Redneck Island” which will feature 12 blue collar contestants competing for a $100,000 prize on a tropical island. Kind of like Survivor I guess. I have absolutely no interest in Rednecks but if this show features the final 10 minutes or so of Austin going on a verbal diatribe on contestants like he did on Tough Enough then you can bet your ass that this show is going on my DVR.
- In what is a scary situation, WWE Legend Mick Foley noted via Twitter the other day that he has been regularly seeing concussion experts due to the various diagnosed and undiagnosed concussions he has received during his career. Two of the top experts in the field noted that he needs to dramatically decrease the amount of time he spends in front of a computer due to his history. WOW. That is some absolute scary stuff to know that concussions can be adversely affected by computer usage.
- Shortly after posted the above to Twitter, Dean Ambrose posted the following comment via the social networking site: “you reap what you sow :) @realmickfoley #thanksmick
- Foley and Ambrose had stopped communicating/escalating the angle via Twitter a few weeks ago when Foley commented that Ambrose had crossed a line when discussing his family. This could be a jumpstart to pick the feud up. Some people also believe that the new viral campaign that WWE is doing about the revolution coming could be used to debut Ambrose to television.
- Marcus Alexander “Buff” Bagwell has been released from the hospital. His jaw is wired shut and will remain that way for several months. He has 4 metal plates placed into his face. He is capable of walking on his own however has limited motion in his arms and feels tingling in both arms and hands. He is in a neck brace as he has had surgery to repair his broken neck. His recovery process is set to take several months.

- What the hell did Chyna do to

?
- WWE Film “Bending the Rules” starring Edge has FLOPPED significantly. The movie cost approximately $5.5 million to make and has only made around $1 million in DVD sales. This will now surpass “That’s What I Am” (co-starring Randy Orton which from an acting standpoint is the best WWE film to date) as the lowest grossing WWE film EVER.
- Episode 65 of “

”

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes
- TNA has signed former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal to a contract. The contract will allow King Mo to not only wrestle in TNA but fight for Bellator who also signed him to a deal. It is a cross promotion now that Bellator is partially owned by Spike TV. If you are wondering why he signed with TNA, Lawal was actually recruited out of college by Gerald Brisco for work in the WWE but was convinced by former WWE Star Shad Gaspard to try MMA first because if he didn’t, he might regret it. So he went into MMA first.
- Random fact: TNA’s ratings have dropped from week to week since Hulk Hogan took over as the on air authority from Sting.
- So Abyss is back? What happens to Ray Park now? Will they show them together? Is Ray Park no longer going to appear on camera? Does anyone care about this storyline at all?
- Where is D’Angelo Dinero?
- Ric Flair’s daughter Ashley is in training to become a professional wrestler.
- I think it is safe to say that when it comes to wrestlers, Scott Steiner officially holds the crown as the king of Twitter. Again, I am not going to go in depth here because there is way to much to write but Steiner’s rants have been EPIC.
- After being broke for the better part of 4 years, Hulk Hogan, as previously mentioned, sold his longtime home in Tampa for $6.2 million. So what does Hogan immediately do? He purchased a $3.3 million dollar mansion in Clearwater Beach Florida. Why not save some of that money considering he is running out of drawing years? I do not know the answer to that. He is out of the proverbial hole when it comes to finances though as the sale of the house put him in a better place. Hopefully he manages to invest and not squander whatever money he has now.
- Hogan has been claiming in interviews lately that both Chris Masters and Jon Morrison have been calling him trying to get spots in TNA. I know Masters has been lobbying for some time to get in but I highly doubt Morrison is interested. He can make much more money in WWE and be used a million times better.
- Nick Bollea has been released from his probation stemming from the tragic accident that left his friend John Graziano a vegetable. Bollea was sentenced to 5 years probation but was released a year early as he has completely finished his community service and has not gotten into trouble since that incident.
- After the Slammiversary show on Sunday, all remaining Impact Tapings and PPVs will be held in Orlando including Bound For Glory in November which is traditionally the biggest PPV of the year and normally on the road.

Independent / International News and Notes:
- I don’t know if this is a smoke screen to try and hide the fact that something is in error but ROH tried to test their iPPV network on Wednesday by airing the FIRST EVER CM Punk vs. Bryan Danielson match from 2004 as well as a Briscoe tag team match from a few weeks ago FOR FREE online and the site crashed. ROH released a statement apologizing for the crash and noted that they will keep the matches online through the weekend as well as upload them to their YouTube account. They also noted that the system will not crash tomorrow night for the “Border Wars” iPPV as they run on a different server for that, etc. I am hoping that they aren’t lying because tomorrow is a BIG DEAL for them if successful so if they have an issue like the one above, it is going to hurt the company BAD.
-
PUNK VS. DANIELSON
.
- Congrats go out to Low-Ki who became the second foreigner to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title for a second time by defeating Prince Devitt on May 3rd. Ki had the title back in 2008 – 2009 before losing it because he signed with WWE.
- If you live in the Northeast of the United States and have not heard about Pro Wrestling Syndicate (PWS) yet then you need to smarten up ASAP. PWS has been around for quite sometime now but somewhere over the past few months have managed to do something that no one else in independent wrestling has been able to do, DRAW FANS AND MAKE MONEY. PWS shows have consistently been drawing bigger and bigger crowds by sprinkling in a perfect mix-up of legends, current big stars and independent wrestlers from across the US. For example, the last show they ran last weekend had a roster that consisted of Amazing Red, Jay Lethal, Dan Maff, Ax and Smash of Demolition, Kevin Matthews, Matt Hardy, Colt Cabana, Teddy Hart, Jillian Hall, Bret “Hitman” Hart, Sami Callihan, Marty Jannetty, Jerry Lynn, Ox Baker, Rocky Johnson, Becky Bayless, Zema Ion, Maria Kanellis and more.
- The group returns with a special 2 night show also airing in iPPV in Rahway NJ celebrating their anniversary on June 1st and June 2nd. The show is SUPER STACKED featuring THE GREAT MUTA, Scott Steiner, Big Van Vader, The Powers of Pain, 2 Cold Scorpio, Simon Dean, Tommy Dreamer, The Briscoes, Koko B. Ware, The Doctor of Style Slyck, The Nasty Boys, AR Fox, Teddy Hart, Dan Maff, ROH Heavyweight Champion Davey Richards, Adam Cole, PN NEWS (!!!!) Maria Kanellis, Tito Santana, The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Rosita and tons more…….

MMA News and Notes
- UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz has torn his ACL in his knee and will be out of action for at least 9 months. His upcoming PPV title defense at UFC 148 in July vs. Urijah Faber has been postponed indefinitely. Urijah Faber is instead going to fight for an interim title at UFC 148 between him and unnamed opponent. The likely opponents are either Renan Barao or Michael McDonald but as of press time, the name has not been confirmed. If McDonald gets the nod and wins the fight, he will become the youngest champion in UFC history at 21 years old. I would however go with Barao as while he is not as popular of a name, he has not lost a fight since his debut in MMA in 2005 at the age of 18 and has won 29 fights in a row. He also has NEVER lost a round during that time in both WEC and UFC.
- UFC on Fox 3…..BOMBED. Sure the show had some good fights and was entertaining from start to finish without a slow, boring, prodding fight on the card but what is the point of that if no one saw it? The show drew a 1.5 rating and was watched by 2.4 million viewers. Each UFC on Fox special has declined from show to show as UFC on FOX 1 had 4.64 million viewers. This show was a 48% viewer drop from the last show. Not a good thing for UFC or Fox. Certainly this show was hurt by the Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto show taking place on PPV but it did not help that the show was headlined by non-mainstream names like Nate Diaz and Jim Miller. The first two shows featured UFC “main event” talent of Cain Velazquez, Junior Dos Santos and Rashad Evans respectively. It is sad because of the 3 Fox shows; this one was the best from an entertaining fight standpoint.
- The show had a lot going against it on top of Mayweather/Cotto. The Avengers was in its second day in release, you had the NBA and NHL playoffs both airing games and you had the Kentucky Derby earlier in the day.
- Once again, NY Bill # S.1707-A was scrapped by the New York State Assembly. That bill is the one which would legalize MMA in New York. Due to it being scrapped, MMA will remain out of NY for another year meaning it will not be passed until May 2013 at the earliest. This is getting stupid already.
- UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has signed his contract to face Dan Henderson on September 1st from Las Vegas.
- B.J. Penn was offered a title shot vs. Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez but turned it down. Penn stated that he would love to fight Melendez but will not fight in Strikeforce as he considers that a ‘step down” (OUCH). If/when he returns to fighting, it will be in UFC or not at all. Penn also wants to fight at Welterweight when he returns. BAD MOVE. Penn naturally weights 165. So competing with guys who are naturally 185 is not going to turn out well for him.
- Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is signed to fight fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva at UFC 149 from Calgary Alberta Canada on July 21st.
- Dana White is hinting that the January show is going to be HUGE. He is looking to book Cowboy’s Stadium in Dallas or the Rogers Centre in Toronto. He would not give anymore details on it but it has many speculating that he is considering Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones should they both win their fights. That or GSP are likely the only two fights that would sell out the stadium in Dallas. Otherwise he is out of his mind going in there without a big fight.
- Dana White has also announced that there will be yet ANOTHER version of The Ultimate Fighter. This version will eminate from Australia and feature Australian fighters vs. United Kingdom fighters. They will have tryouts in both Sydney and London in June with the show itself being taped in London. No coaches have been announced yet.
- Strikeforce Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey is scheduled for her first title defense vs. Sarah Kaufman on either the July 14th show or in August at a location to be named. Originally it was rumored to be taking place at the Heavyweight Grand Prix finals but it was decided to move it from that show.
- Former WWE Star Bobby Lashley lost in an MMA bout over the weekend. It was Lashley’s 2nd loss in his last 4 fights. At age 35 years old, losing to journeymen (a fancy name for MMA enhancement talent) is not a good thing. His MMA career may be coming to an end soon.

- Musician Chris Brown recently did a remix of Kanye West’s “Theraflu” song and in it, he has a lyric that says: “Don't f*ck with my old bitches ... like a bad fur ... every industry n*gga done had her.” That is rumored to be a shot at his former flame Rihanna. So much so that Rihanna stopped following him on Twitter and Brown did the same. So just to be clear, Brown makes a track about Rihanna being a slut and banging everyone in the industry and she gets angry and stops following him on Twitter. Brown does
THIS
and she wants to get with him?
- Director James Cameron told the NY Times last week that he is no longer making films

- Congratulations to former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal who received his doctorate in Organizational Learning and Human Resource Development last weekend. It took Shaq 4 years to complete this. Shaq maintained a 3.8 GPA during his studies and since he was in the NBA for most of this, he personally flew his professors to cities across the United States in order to get this degree.
- The Avengers raped and pillaged at the box office last weekend. If you didn’t see it, what the hell are you waiting for? GO SEE IT. It now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend EVER in film with $207,400,000.00 and is the fastest film to make 200 million EVER. Its worldwide total for last weekend was $654,800,000.00. That number today has to surpass $700,000,000 by this writing. WOW. Iron Man 3 begins production in two weeks for a release next summer as well as Captain America 2 and Thor 2 which both begin production NEXT Summer for 2014 releases. Marvel is also developing (meaning no guarantee of making) movies based on Dr. Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Runaways and Ant-Man (who is a member of the Avengers). And absolutely there will be an Avengers sequel which was confirmed by Marvel Film Head Kevin Feige.
