T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #163
Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE:
WWE News and Notes
- WWE vs. TNA Lawsuit Update: As I stated last week, it was CONFIRMED in official court documents related to the lawsuit that Ric Flair was effectively terminated from his TNA contract (i.e. FIRED) on May 11, 2012. Flair is still listed on the TNA roster via the company website but he was fired and is free to compete anywhere he wants. Note, he was not released from his contract, the documents specify he was terminated.
- I can’t. The lack of continuity and logic continue to drive me insane. It is as if I am living in the twilight zone with the nonsense that WWE is putting on all the while, TNA continues to put on strong shows with common sense behind them. For example, on RAW, John Laurinaitis who was fired the night before, comes out to start the show and give his departure address. He then says that before he was fired, he had already booked the main event of RAW which would be himself and Big Show and David Otunga vs. John Cena in a handicap match. Why in the world would Laurinaitis do that when if Show had won at No Way Out, Cena would have been fired? Secondly, why would the WWE Board of Directors allow the match to take place to begin with? Since Laurinaitis was fired, they can simply overrule this. WTF?
- I am not going to sit here and try to look for the positives in both No Way Out and RAW because honestly, there aren’t many. Kudos goes to CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler for always putting in work in the ring regardless of the crappy angles and storylines being given to them. For everyone/everything else, shame on WWE. I cannot fathom why they continue to put on crappy shows just before their big move to 3 hours only a few weeks away. It’s mind boggling. With that being said, if you want a No Way Out review then read
AARON WOOD’S
. Are you curious about Raw?
COREY LETSON
is your guy. I am not reviewing them. WWE cannot be bothered to put on a decent show that features long term planning, continuity and reasonable angles. They also can’t help themselves to not bury their own product (see the Cindy Lauper/Wendy Ricther/Rowdy Roddy Piper segment on RAW which had Michael Cole burying it on commentary per directions from Vince McMahon), then I cannot be bothered to give my thoughts on it. The below stuff will be overall WWE questions as well as news from the company. Maybe I will give my thoughts on RAW next week if it doesn’t suck.
- As noted last week, Triple H has replaced John Laurinaitis as Executive VP of Talent Relations. Laurinaitis was still booking WWE Live Events and handling payroll. Well the live events booking has now been taken over by Michael Hayes so Laurinaitis is officially OUT OF POWER within the WWE hierarchy. He is going to be used as a television character only going forward and I am assuming that his contract is going to be converted to a talent only one as well.
- Anyone notice that Alberto Del Rio defeated Santino Marella on RAW Monday yet due to his “concussion”, couldn’t wrestle for the World title at No Way Out just 24 hours before? Interesting no? The reason for Del Rio not competing at the PPV on Sunday was in fact NOT due to a concussion. Del Rio was written out of the PPV due to apparently having a big blowup with Vince McMahon over his place on the roster as well as a contract issue. It is rumored that Del Rio threatened to quit the promotion and his threat was taken very seriously as Del Rio, while not as rich as the character he portrays, is well off financially due to coming from a rich family as well as making good money in his career. He can easily go to Mexico as a HUGE STAR based on being the son of Dos Caras as well as coming off of WWE television as a main event talent. The concussion story was a cover due to him being removed from the PPV as punishment.
-
SPOILER ALERT: Del Rio defeats Christian tonight on Smackdown. So in a week, Del Rio defeated both the US and IC Champions via submission. That is either a sign of a renewed push for Del Rio or a complete burial of the secondary titles in the company.
- WWE RAW live on Monday from Long Island. Funny, I don’t recall seeing Long Island’s own, Zack Ryder on the show. FYI…not the first time WWE purposely held him off television in his hometown. That will show him for getting over with fans on his own.
- Chris Jericho returns to RAW next week. Jericho was suspended for 30 days on May 23rd for desecrating the Brazilian flag during WWE’s debut in the country. He could essentially work live events this coming weekend but WWE is holding him off until Monday. There has been discussion as bringing him back as a babyface when he returns so we will see on Monday.
- Rey Mysterio’s suspension ends on Monday June 25th and for all intents and purposes, he could be used on RAW should WWE want him to return. He is medically cleared to wrestle. Not sure if they plan on using him or waiting a few weeks to re-debut him.
- Take it for what it’s worth but Kelly Kelly is being advertised locally for next Monday’s RAW in Fort Wayne Indiana. WWE is also locally advertising Brock Lesnar for the August 13th RAW show in Dallas which happens to be the “Go Home” show for Summerslam.
- Eve Torres update. I never understood why WWE always has a tendency to do things like this but Eve has not been on television lately because she was pulled by WWE to take part in a new NBC reality show that will have celebrities go through military style experiments. 50 people on the roster and WWE goes with the one that was heavily pushed in the company’s top angle. Mind boggling. Anyway, that is where she has been of late. Joining her on the show are actor Terry Crews, singer Nick Lachey, Boxer Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain, Olympic Gold medalist Picabo Street, businessman Todd Palin (Sarah Palin’s husband) and NBC’s Biggest Loser trainer Dolvett Quince. Eve is set to return to RAW on Monday.
- WWE is planning on having interim general managers host RAW & Smackdown each week until the July 23rd 1,000th RAW. Mick Foley was the acting GM this week although he was in ONE SEGMENT on RAW and never seen again. Vickie Guerrero was announced as the GM for next weeks shows. If WWE chooses to make it all authority figures then there are several options for the role going forward including Sgt. Slaughter, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, William Regal, Mike Adamle, Teddy Long, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Stephanie McMahon, Bret “Hitman” Hart, Paul Heyman, Kurt Angle (not happening), The Anonymous Raw General Manager, Jonathan Coachman, Eric Bischoff (unlikely).
- Remember when WWE announced that they were planning on having one former WWE contracted talent wrestle on each RAW until the 1,000th episode and then had Vader come out to squash Heath Slater? Well that idea has since been nixed due to the huge reaction Vader received from the fans. WWE does not want the obvious fact that the stars of yesteryear are so far and away bigger than the current WWE roster. Vader’s pop was louder than anything on the show except for Cena. WWE figured that they didn’t want to show that again to the crowds and decided to have one of the “Legends” of the past just appear on the show instead of wrestle. That is why they had both Mick Foley and Rowdy Piper appear on Monday. Problem is, even without having them wrestle, it still didn’t work because behind Cena, the loudest pops of the night were for Piper and Foley respectively. Here is an idea for WWE, if you don’t want the old stars to get louder pops than your current roster, STOP BURYING YOUR CURRENT ROSTER AND GET THEM OVER!!! Either that or don’t book legends anymore.
-
WWE FUN FACT: We are still without a WWE PPV being headlined by a WWE or World Title match in 2012 even though CM Punk is currently the longest reigning WWE champ since 2006 and if he holds the title through December (he won’t) he will be the longest reigning champion since the 1980’s. A title match headlining a PPV isn’t likely to happen anytime soon either as the July PPV will be headlined by the Money In The Bank ladder match and the August PPV is going to be headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. HHH.
- CM Punk was on the
JIMMY FALLON SHOW
on Monday.
- It has been confirmed that Randy Orton was suspended for elevated levels of testosterone which he is telling people was due to a tainted supplement. That is the reason he is not treating it as a big deal. He is ok with being suspended because at the end of day, regardless if whatever supplement he took had testosterone in it that he wasn’t aware of, he should have known better than to use it. Due to the last of creativity lately as well as the lack of depth, contrary to what Vince McMahon feels about bringing him back and those lobbying against it, he is going to be brought back and placed in the exact position he was in when he got suspended.
- Both the RAW and Smackdown crew as well as WWE production hit a MAJOR snafu when traveling from Nassau Coliseum in Long Island to Baltimore for Smackdown on Monday. What is normally a 3 and a half hour drive from NY to Maryland took the crews about 6 hours due to traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike. WWE did not arrive to Maryland until about 6 AM on Tuesday morning after leaving around midnight.
- Someone smartened up in creative as Sin Cara is no longer being billed as the most popular wrestler in Mexican history but instead now being called “one of the most popular wrestlers in the history of Mexico” as well as the “biggest box office draw in the history of Mexico”. The second one is a half truth. Cara as Mistico wasn’t the biggest box office draw in Mexico history but he did in fact have a 2 year run where he was the biggest box office draw at the time in the world. That is including John Cena.
- Former WWE Divas Champion Lita was backstage at No Way Out as the guest of CM Punk. I am assuming they are back to being together as they have been spending a lot of time together although it is unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that Punk’s former girlfriend Beth Phoenix is currently dating WWE Hall of Famer Edge who was in fact Lita’s former boyfriend. Small world the wrestling business is.
- If you didn’t notice all night at No Way Out, that was indeed former WWE and WCW Women’s champion Madusa sitting behind Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole. She was in New Jersey the night before for a monster truck show at Met Life Stadium (Home of Mania 29) across the street the night before.
- Vince McMahon is HUGE on Ryback and is completely enamored with the squash matches that are taking place each week. Like I said last week though, you can only get so far with pushing guys in squashes. Eventually he is going to need to squash lower card talents like Santino, Hawkins, Tatsu, etc.
- Former TNA and ROH star The Amazing Red received a WWE Tryout prior to the No Way Out PPV on Sunday. No word on what came out of it. Red was recommended to WWE for a tryout by friend Matt Striker who worked and traveled with Red on the independent scene in New York. It is likely Red will be hired for the new all cruiserweight program WWE is looking to launch with the WWE Network.
- Even though he finished his TNA commitments last weekend, it isn’t expected that WWE is going to offer Matt Morgan a contract. While there is interest in talking to Morgan, WWE sources say that they do not plan on negotiating with recently available TNA talents so long as they are still battling TNA in court.
- WWE is considering on using a premium channel business model where cable subscribers would have to pay their cable provider to get the channel similar to what the movie channels do (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc). That way WWE is guaranteeing that the cable provider gets paid for the channel as opposed to cable providers having to pay WWE to air their content.
- Angle OVER as Mick Foley tweeted the following on Monday: "Finally had a talk with @TheDeanAmbrose . Unique type of cat. We'll probably never exchange holiday cards, but it was good to clear the air." Definitely a unique WASTE OF TIME by WWE. Different than investing in RAW or Smackdown and getting disappointed. Good to see WWE thinking outside the box on how to get fans hopes up before crushing them.
- WWE Hall of Famer “Iron” Mike Tyson will be doing a one-man Broadway show called “Undisputed Truth” directed by Spike Lee. The show will only give 6 performances in a limited run but is basically Tyson telling his life story. Tyson is also being heavily featured in
WWE 13
.
- WWE has begun shooting interviews for a WWE “Attitude Era” themed DVD.
- New nWo Randy Savage
FIGURE
.
- Former WWE Star Ken Doane (Kenny Dykstra) has been very vocal via Twitter lately going into rants about John Cena. Doane is claiming that Cena had lobbied in the past to get Randy Orton released from the company when Orton was first suspended for violating the company Wellness policy and that he wouldn’t be surprised if Cena was the center of the talk of not having Orton return. He also went on to mention that he isn’t surprised about Cena’s recent marital woes considering Doane himself was engaged to former WWE Diva Mickie James when both were still with WWE but broke it off with her when he found out that James was sleeping with Cena. Cena and James were teased to be an on screen couple before Cena broke it off with her and she was moved to the Smackdown brand. Coincidently, Cena was MARRIED to his wife two months after breaking off with James. James was released a short time after due to not handling the Cena break up well. When asked by a fan via twitter why he waited until now to divulge all of this information, Doane noted that he was still holding out hope that at his young age, he could go back to WWE. But he had a tryout last year and when Cena gave him the cold shoulder by not shaking his hand or even acknowledging him, he realized that bridge is burned. He now has a job outside of wrestling and is likely never going to go back to it.
- In what could be related news,
TMZ.com
is reporting that John Cena’s wife is claiming that they have received tips that Cena has in fact cheated on her during their marriage and are pursuing all leads to verify these tips. This is going to get real ugly for Cena who for years (dating back to a Howard Stern
INTERVIEW
) has been labeled as a womanizer once claiming on Stern that several of the guys in the locker room have bet him in bars to bed “bigger” women they meet at bars. Cena then claimed that he did in fact do so as he did not discriminate. Whether true or not, this is likely an effort to void the prenuptial agreement between the couple.
- On the flip side of that coin, John Cena granted his 300th “Make a Wish” earlier this week and appeared on Good Morning America on Wednesday to celebrate it. The boy who’s wish he granted was a guest on the show and Cena surprised him again to celebrate. He then offered to fly the boy and his parents to the 1,000th RAW in St. Louis on July 23rd. Again, say what you want about Cena’s work in the ring or his character but the guy is a class act for a human being.
- Best of luck to the first ever Tough Enough winner Maven Huffman was released from rehab this past week. He was sent to rehab as part of a deal stemming from his April arrest for having several pain killer prescriptions from several different doctors. He is currently in a sober living facility and told TMZ that he was forever grateful for WWE for saving his life. He also noted that he is interested in returning to the promotion.

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes
- TNA is still rolling. The string of good shows continues on with last night's Impact. THIS is exactly what WWE should be doing. Building from week to week and using continuity to do so. Not a hard equation to follow. Although I am sad to say that the LAME ENDING to the Dixie Carter/A.J.Styles angle was disappointing to say the least. I didn’t think the payoff was worthwhile or interesting at all. Kind of lame to be honest. But other than that, another good Impact last night. What is even more amazing is that people are finally taking notice. Reports state that the last PPV drew approximately 15,000 PPV buys. That is WAY UP from the average of 7,000 that they have been doing. They doubled their buys and even though it hasn’t translated to live events or ratings yet, with the pace that they are putting out good shows, it eventually will. They just have to remain on track and not falter by booking crap.
- Next week’s main event is Kurt Angle and A.J. Styles vs. Christopher Daniels & Kazarian for the tag team titles. If this match is HALF as good as their PPV match then I recommend that EVERYONE watch it.
- Austin Aries surrendered his X-Division title to Hulk Hogan in exchange for a title shot at Destination X. The catch was that Aries felt that the title would be devalued if he just surrendered it so he made a deal with Hogan stating that the next X-Division champ should have the same option do to what he did come next year at Destination X. So essentially the X-Division title is now going to be a “Money in the Bank” type title. Ideally it should be whenever the X-Division champ wants but it looks like it is going to be only at that specific PPV.
- A little disappointed however that even though it was announced several weeks ago that the TV Title would be defended every week, there was no TV title defense last night on Imapct. Or did they think that would go unnoticed?
- Only in TNA can a wrestler (Matt Morgan) be wrestling on his last day in the company and WIN on his way out. Matt Morgan worked what was scheduled to be his last TNA live event last weekend in Texas and defeated Crimson with the carbon footprint.
- The latest on Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is that he is still recovering from several knee surgeries from his staph infection but they hope he can begin training in OVW sometime in July/August with a fall debut set for Impact. He will then maintain a regular TNA schedule until about November/December to then train for his Bellator debut in January where he will compete in their Light Heavyweight Tournament.
- Chris Sabin did in fact injure himself last week on Impact. Sabin suffered a tear of his ACL in his left knee which will require surgery. He will be out of action several months. This is devastating as he has only been back a month since recovering from an ACL & MCL tear in his right knee that kept him out of action a year. It’s just a string of bad luck for Sabin as by the time he comes back; he will have only wrestled for maybe a total of two months in the past two years.
- Former WWE Star Luke Gallows worked a dark match TNA Tryout last night before Impact.
- Best wishes to Eric Young who recently underwent his 16th throat surgery over the past 8 years. He has to undergo surgery annually due to polyps in his throat that he has had since he was a little boy. This is why his voice is always raspy when he speaks.
- Former WWE Diva
NIDIA GUENARD
was backstage at a TNA live event in Houston Texas last week. Nidia was there with her young daughter and she was a guest of TNA Knockout Tara. Nidia, who won the very first season of WWE’s Tough Enough, retired from the business following her WWE release in 2005. She has now been working as a chef since then and has a young daughter. If you search the Club WWI archive, you can hear on of, if not THE, only interview she did since leaving WWE.
- After several threats of taking action, TNA has finally officially filed a lawsuit against former TNA Star “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner in regards to all of his comments via Twitter vs. TNA, Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff and others. The lawsuit, which was filed in Nashville, contains a copy of Steiner’s contract which states that Steiner would not "make any statements or provide information, written, verbal or otherwise, which directly or indirectly disparages or casts in a negatie light any TNA officers, employees, representatives, affiliates, shareholders, licensees and/or past or current TNA talent. And that Steiner would not use online social media or media appearances to discuss TNA without TNA's prior written consent in each instance.” Obviously Steiner has in fact breached his contract.
- In unrelated WWE news that I found funny, Scott Steiner has been added to the WWE Alumni section of the website. LOL. That isn’t a joke either, his bio can be found
HERE
.
Independent / International News and Notes:
- I am hoping he is good but it is unlikely. Extreme Rising (The ECW revival being run by Shane Douglas) announced that Sabu, fresh out of rehab, will be working their June 29th and 30th shows. Not only are they promoting him, they are building the entire show around the “
REDEMPTION OF SABU
” including using the footage of him being stretchered to the hospital. I don’t know about this. I feel like he rushed through attending a rehab facility and is looking to score a payday. This isn’t going to end well for him. Side note, the rehab stay was paid for by World Wrestling Entertainment as part of their Wellness Policy. For those who do not know, WWE offers free drug and alcohol rehabilitation for ANY talent who had signed a talent contract with WWE during their careers. Does not matter if you worker your entire career there or were signed and then released a day later. If your name signed one of their contracts, you are entitled to paid for rehab by WWE.
- Former ECW original Axl Rotten retired after a car accident following the Extreme Reunion show has officially UN-RETIRED. He is accepting independent bookings.
- Best of luck to Ring of Honor as they make their second attempt at launching an iPPV on their own this coming Sunday. The line-up is below. ROH has hired Acquia which is a hosting and Performance Company to assist in any web issues they may have with this weekend with the iPPV. They are adamant that “Best in the World” will go off without a hitch. If this iPPV flops due to performance issues then ROH is going to be in a world of trouble.
- Davey Richards is telling more and more people that he is going to retire from professional wrestling in 2013. He noted that he never planned on being a superstar or making millions in wrestling when he started. He only did it for fun and now only does it because it pays him. He is more into Jiu-Jitsu now but does not plan on competing in it due to his age. He did say that he has a full time job lined up that plans on being his career.
- It is the summer season and ROH normally runs fewer shows than usual so don’t expect any major news out of ROH until fall.
- Pro Wrestling Syndicate is back at it again bringing you blasts from the past on their next show September 14th in Rahway NJ. So far confirmed apart from the usual roster are former WWE Diva and Playboy Playmate Ashley Massaro who is doing her first wrestling show since 2009 as well as a match up between Demolition vs. The Powers of Pain. AWESOMENESS.

MMA News and Notes
- Big weekend for UFC and insane weekend for Dana White. This is their first two event weekend with UFC on FX tonight in Atlantic City. Immediately following the fight, Dana White will board his private plane for a 10 hour flight to Brazil where he will attend UFC in Brazil tomorrow night then to fly to Vegas following that event. All with his inner ear problem.
- The reason Dana White did not undergo the surgery to repair his inner ear disorder is because the surgery isn’t 100% in correcting it and would require him to LEARN TO WALK AGAIN. Doctors have to cut nerves in his ear which effect his equilibrium and thus would completely mess up his ability to walk. He would have to undergo intense rehab for up to 2 months including learning to walk.
- It wouldn’t be a new week if a UFC fight didn’t get changed due to injuries. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is OUT of UFC 149 due to an injury. He apparently has not recovered from his devastating arm break at the hands of Frank Mir last December. UFC will be replacing him in his fight with Cheick Kongo by Shawn Jordan. Jordan is fighting in his 2nd UFC fight after knocking out Oli Thompson in his UFC debut on March 3rd.
- Dana White has CONFIRMED that their annual July 4th weekend in Las Vegas is now going to be their annual convention and Hall of Fame ceremony each year. They are setting it up to be International Fight Week each year and it will be UFC’s version of “Wrestlemania Weekend”. They are going to co-sponsor concerts, pool parties, club and bar events, the Fan Expo, the Hall of Fame, etc. It is now going to be an annual event but rather than tour the US like WWE does with Mania, they are locking it down in Vegas.
- Because of the above, UFC 148 is going to have 6 fights instead of 5 airing on PPV. UFC has also requested and have been granted an additional hour of PPV time for the show.
- UFC on Fox 5 has been announced to be taking place on December 8th, 2012 from a TBD location.
- UFC Heavyweight Alistair Overeem claimed on Twitter that he is going to be fighting in December which should be kind of hard considering he can’t apply for a fighter’s license until 9 months after he was told he would have to wait which officially ends on December 27th. In order to make the December 29th UFC show, Overeem will have to be promoted as fighting on it BEFORE the 27th which essentially wouldn’t please the NSAC very much. Plus, if they promote him without his license and he fails a drug test again, they will look like idiots. So he isn’t fighting in December contrary to what he thinks.
- Junior Dos Santos said this week that if he were to defend the Heavyweight Title vs. Overeem, he would request that both fighters be given blood tests for elevated levels of testosterone rather than urine tests. Overeem would essentially have NO CHOICE but to accept since he originally took a blood test with the Brock Lesnar controversy when he started as well as his claims that he is drug free. So blood testing would be no problem.
- Jose Aldo is looking to fight in October. UFC is going to hold off on booking Eric Koch until then so he can make-up the fight with Aldo that had to be postponed.
- Michael Bisping is looking to return from knee surgery in September. That is a bold timeline considering he just got the surgery in June.
- Strikeforce Star Rafael Cavalcante has been suspended for ONE YEAR due to testing positive for a performance enhancing drug following his win over Mike Kyle at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormeir. Cavalcante defeated Kyle by tapout in 33 seconds of the first round. That fight has now been changed to a “no contest”.
- Former Strikeforce Heavyweight Brett Rogers has signed to join Bellator. Rogers was released last year after his arrest for domestic violence vs. his wife where he ended up serving 60 days in jail.

of the week PART 7: I have absolutely ZERO clue how something like this happens. Seriously, do you not always look before you leap? Wipe the seat with toilet paper and then nest that sh*t with as much TP as you can? Why would you sit bare ass on a public toilet? If it is about to come out and you can’t wait to do all of the above, you hover over it. Don’t EVER sit down on it. EVER.

- In sad movie news, Jim Carrey announced that he is pulling out of the sequel to Dumb and Dumber that was set to start filming in September. Carey dropped out because he felt that New Line Cinema was not putting much effort or enthusiasm behind the film. Ideally the film will not be scrapped because if they attempt to do it without Carrey, it is going to flop big time.
- If you are my age then the name Arsenio Hall is more known to you for his late night talk show from the early 90’s more than it is known for his recent win on Celebrity Apprentice. Well not anymore. Arsenio is RETURNING to late night as he just landed a deal to host a new talk show debuting in fall of 2013 on CBS.
- Actor Johnny Depp separated from his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis after 15 years and two kids. While the two have never been married, it is as if they were. The reason I am writing this is because by all accounts, Depp is likely the nicest person in all of Hollywood and he is a great actor to boot. If you don’t know about Depp, he absolutely HATES living in the limelight. So much so that he spent the better part of the last decade living in France as his primary residence. He only moved back to the United States in 2011 due to France wanting him to declare residency which would have required him to pay taxes in both France and the United States (which he was still currently paying since he is an American citizen). A great story on how giving he or a person he can be is when his daughter got an E. Coli infection that began to cause her kidneys to shut down. After a lengthy hospital stay that saved her life, Depp returned to the hospital unannounced, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and ended up reading books to sick children for several hours. He then returned unannounced the following year and donated $2,000,000.00 to the hospital. He is also known for tipping ridiculous amounts of money to waiters & waitresses because he knows how hard his mother used to work when he was growing up (she was a waitress). A well known story is that he once got a bill for $200+ dollars for a meal and tipped $4,000 to the server.
