Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It's Friday!!!!!
Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled
“Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling
PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy.
MATT NOTE:
Just wanted to say that it has been a tough week for Yankee fans. First we lost legendary public address announcer a.k.a. “The Voice of God” Bob Sheppard and then we lost our longtime owner, the man who helped deliver the Yankees back to Dynasty status, George Steinbrenner. Love him or hate him, “The Boss” is by far the GREATEST OWNER IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS. Steinbrenner was also a life long wrestling fan as he regularly attended shows in Florida during the 70’s and 80’s and is legitimately a very close friend of WWE Hall of Famer Bobby “the Brain” Heenan. Heenan has a seat in the Owners Box of Yankee Stadium whenever he wants them per Steinbrenner’s orders. R.I.P. Boss.

WWE News and Notes
- Amazing RKO spot by Randy Orton and Evan Bourne. I don’t think they could have timed it more perfectly. Sad that it is the second time a perfect finish to a PPV was used on free TV by Orton (first being when Orton RKO’d Edge from the spear).
- Did I mention how much I absolutely HATE the stupid emailing GM angle? This is probably some of the worst WWE stuff they have EVER done and that is saying A LOT.
- WWE is going to continue to drop red herrings on whom the mystery GM is going to be. “Stone Cold” was teased last week and Roddy Piper was teased this week. You know why they are doing this? They are doing it because they honestly don’t have a clue who it is going to be.
- Ricky Steamboat was not released from the hospital over the weekend as originally planned. He is no longer in ICU and instead is resting in a normal room however he is still not out of the woods medically hence why he was kept past the weekend.
- According to the Manchester Evening News in England, Shane McMahon has apparently invested in a company called “International Sports Management” based in Great Britain.
- WWE apparently was IRATE that word of HHH’s surgery leaked out. Surprisingly the source of the leak was not internal but rather from a Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dick Hayhurst who tweeted about having HHH next to him in a recovery room in Birmingham Alabama at Dr. James Andrews’ offices. The tweets have since been removed from Twitter and replaced by Hayhurst saying: “Folks I feel terrible. Social Media has bit me in the @ss. Almost wish I hadn’t seen a celeb today.”
- Undertaker making his Summerslam return is still touch and go at this time. WWE is hoping he will be ready but there is a possibility that he won’t be medically cleared.
- CM Punk is out for about a month more with his elbow recovery but is expected to be back in time for Summerslam and in action at the event. There is also a SURPRISE on Smackdown tonight involving him.
- Longtime WCW fans will get a kick out of Smackdown tonight as Jack Swagger’s father makes an appearance. Tune in to see who is “his father”.
- WWE has signed the sister of WWE Women’s Champion Alicia Fox to a developmental deal. Her name is Christina Crawford and she is in FCW training.
- WWE management hasn’t learned or flat out does not care about its legends as the Wrestlemania 27 travel package information was released this week and the Hall of Fame STILL takes place on Saturday evening as opposed to Friday night or even Saturday early afternoon. So once again we will have several legends forced to make a 3-5 minute speech so that the production team can edit it for television. Unbelievable.
- While not official stopped, WWE has indeed stopped announcing guest hosts. No word on whether they are abandoning it completely but they definitely don’t plan on promoting it in advance and there are definitely no more planned for the last 2 Raw shows of July.
- For those who didn’t notice, they have removed Jim Ross’ voice from the opening video package of WWE television shows. It has been replaced with Michael Cole’s voice. Pay attention tonight on Smackdown to see. FYI…the rumor circulating is that Ross was removed as “punishment” for appearing on camera at UFC 116. I don’t believe the rumor mainly because in what was MORE of a shock to me, Gorilla Monsoon was also removed from the opening and he is probably the most loved and respected WWE employee in history. WWE also got rid of Bruno Sammartino, Billy Graham, Shane McMahon & Lita in the opening as well.
- Beth Phoenix stated on Twitter that she is about 2 months away from returning to action.
- Melina was due to have her first match back in FCW this week however when she was evaluated by a doctor while doing in ring drills, he told her to scrap the idea. The setback is reportedly minor and she should be back in a few weeks or so. The current plan is to use her upon her WWE return as a partner to John Morrison against Ted DiBiase and Mayrese.
- WWE is working on a “Best of High Flyers” DVD for October release. Considering they have a ridiculously large tape library, it is fair to say that this DVD has potential with footage of Rey Mysterio, Jushin Liger, Evan Bourne, Psychosis, Too Cold Scorpio, Original Tiger Mask, etc. Hopefully they use it.
- Former ECW and WCW wrestler Mikey Whipwreck has been contacted by WWE to work as a trainer in developmental. Whipwreck is known for training current WWE stars Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins as well as the former Mike Mondo of the Spirit Squad, TNA star Amazing Red and former TNA stars The S.A.T. and Trinity.
- For those who missed James Guttman’s NXT INSANITY column, I just HAD to repost this.
TREMENDOUS
mainly because you know it is going to happen.
- Former WWE Developmental Ryan O’Reilly has re-signed with the company after a several year absence from the company. He was released at his request due to not wanting to travel in order to be with his girlfriend at the time, Krissy Vaine who was also under contract (and involved in an angle with Torrie Wilson where she was scheduled to play Wilson’s sister on Smackdown). She also requested and was granted her release in order to be with O’Reilly even though she was on the main roster and working on Smackdown.
- WWE has also signed former developmental Aaron “Idol” Stevens back to the company.
- Trish Stratus
POSING
in her Yoga Studio in Toronto.
- Even though he is not used on television, Finlay has been working houseshows with the NXT guys as well as developmental talents training on the road so that they get in ring experience with a veteran.
- WWE isn’t happy that UFC announced that Brock Lesnar’s latest fight will take place on October 23rd since they have their “Bragging Rights” PPV on October 24th. WWE PPV’s do horrible when there is a UFC PPV the night before hence why Vince thought about dropping the Survivor Series name (since UFC was the night before) and then realized that if was UFC doing damage to his PPV numbers and not the PPV names/concepts. “Bragging Rights” is traditionally one of the lowest WWE PPV’s of the year so Brock the night before is bound to CRUSH it.
2) WWE Money In the Bank PPV:
is on July 18th from Kansas City Missouri and the line-up is as follows:
-
WWE TITLE: Sheamus © vs. John Cena (in a steel cage)
-
WORLD TITLE: Rey Mysterio © vs. Jack Swagger
-
MITB WWE TITLE: John Morrison vs. Randy Orton vs. Edge vs. Evan Bourne vs. Chris Jericho vs. Ted DiBiase vs. United States champion The Miz vs. Mark Henry
-
MITB WORLD TITLE: Kane vs. Christian vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Big Show vs. Matt Hardy vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler
UNDISPUTED TAG TITLES: Hart Dynasty © vs. The Usos
-
WWE WOMEN’S TITLE: Layla El © vs. Kelly Kelly
-
WWE DIVAS TITLE: Alicia Fox © vs. Eve Torres
3) TNA News and Notes
- Apparently sources close to TNA management are saying that other than signing his name on a piece of paper, it appears that Paul Heyman to TNA is a done deal. If this is indeed the case, he has been given carte blanche over the company roster and creative staff and can do as he sees fit in order to turn the company around as that was the ONLY way he planned on signing with the company. If this is indeed true, TNA finally did something right.
- And in accordance with the above, Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan both missed the Victory Road PPV and this week’s television tapings. Hogan missed the PPV and tapings because he is still “recovering” from back surgery (even though he filmed a physical angle after the surgery) and it was too far for him to travel to (even though Tampa is an hour away from Orlando). Bischoff missed it because he is on “vacation” with his family (even though TNA only tapes 5 days of television per month and he knows the taping schedule so essentially he could have went on vacation AROUND the television tapings). There is a reason why both “recovering” and “vacation” are in quotes. :)
- Per my above comment, Hogan was “recovering” so he couldn’t travel an hour to Orlando from his Tampa home. Instead, this coming Sunday he will travel with Jimmy Hart, Greg Valentine, Brutus Beefcake and the Nasty Boys to an appearance at a car and bike show in Coquitlam British Columbia and next Wednesday in Chicago. Um…….no comment.
- While Hogan obviously can travel, his back is still not 100% and the planned Hogan vs. Abyss and Hogan vs. Sting matches that were penciled in for later this year are now definitely off the books.
- Hogan is also NOT scheduled for the next set of TV tapings which are setting up the "Hard Justice" PPV.
- If they Heyman deal falls through, Kevin Sullivan is still waiting in the wings as he did in fact interview with TNA and laid out a yearlong storyline involving the TNA title for them.
- TNA finally debuted their big surprise that Jeff Jarrett and Dixie Carter were hyping all week on Twitter at the Victory Road PPV!!! The surprise was……....oh wait……..they didn’t announce any surprise and completely blew off the fact that they were hyping it all week by not mentioning it at all. Amazing.
- Dixie Carter legit held a meeting prior to the Impact tapings this past Monday where she basically told the entire roster that their wrestling needed to improve. She said they were SPOILED because impact was taped so they know that they can cover up their mistakes with editing. Yes. She said this. Legitimately. To a group that included Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, The Motor City Machine Guns, Rob Van Dam, D’Angelo Dinero, Desmond Wolfe, Jay Lethal, Ric Flair, Amazing Red, Homicide, Kaz, & Jeff Hardy. Mind you that the only thing worth watching the evening before WAS the wrestling and not the angles.
- Big congrats to Jay Lethal for fulfilling his dream. He’s a great guy who definitely deserves it.
- Tara (formerly Victoria in WWE) re-debuted at the Victory Road PPV this past weekend. You know, the same Tara that lost a retirement match to Madison Rayne a few months back.
- Mick Foley returned at the Impact tapings this week. You know, the same Mick Foley who lost a retirement match to Jeff Jarrett a few months back.
- TNA has pulled the trigger on their very own Invasion angle. The ECW faction (which TNA is going to have to tread lightly when naming as WWE’s legal team is going to be watching them closely) debuted last night on Impact in a show ending brawl with the TNA roster. Even TNA agents Al Snow and Simon Diamond joined in.
- Why does every TNA match have to have a stipulation to it? Ladder match, career match, No DQ match, Chair match, cage match, submission match, Ultimate X match, board of nails match. WTF? Why can’t people just have normal matches? All those stipulations were last week on Impact and the PPV!!!! I am sure I am missing some too.
-
SPOILER ALERT: At the Impact tapings for next week’s show, Dixie Carter announced that she invited the former ECW stars to TNA (which is weird considering Stevie Richards and Rhino were under TNA contract so why would they need an invite?) and that at the Hard Justice PPV, it will be their last chance to have a, and I quote, “ONE NIGHT ONLY” PPV. LOL. Yes, this was said. Tommy Dreamer accepted and promised that they would “take it to the Extreme”. The PPV is scheduled to be ECW Only - meaning none of the TNA talent (AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Ric Flair, Beer Money, etc) are scheduled to appear.
- So with
ECW’s TNA’s “ONE NIGHT ONLY” PPV, I wonder if they will make every match have some sort of gimmick or stipulation to it. You know, so that it is different than every other TNA PPV.
- For the record and for those thinking it, Paul Heyman has nothing to do with the current “Invasion” angle going on. The entire thing is being laid out by Vince Russo, Tommy Dreamer and Brother Ray.
- Bill Alfonso was backstage at TNA this week. My assumption is that he is being considered for the on going angle.
- The “THEY” that Abyss has been referring to lately
IS NOT the ECW guys. It is someone else. Who? I have no idea but it is someone else.
-
SPOILER ALERT #2: NEXT WEEK………Samoa Joe vs. Jeff Hardy....FIRST TIME EVER!!! on free TV.
- Speaking of Hardy, he continues to dodge bullets as his latest court date was pushed from July 8th to September 9th.
- Scott Hall is still recovering from pneumonia. He has been having health issues lately. Something tells me this isn’t going to end up with a fairytale ending. Sad but true.
- Do yourself a favor, if you are forced to watch Impact or even if you are bored and have nothing better to do, listen carefully to Taz on commentary. The man obviously lost all his passion and excitement about TNA and treats it completely as a joke now. HILARIOUS!!!
- Ric Flair is above and beyond the best promo guy in the business today. I said it last week but I feel I need to reiterate it every week until everyone knows. Amazing what a non-scripted promo from someone who has talent sounds. The guy is a GOD.
- The charges against Ric Flair’s wife due to the domestic violence issue a few months back have been dropped due to lack of evidence as Flair refused to testify against her and used his 5th Amendment right while testifying thus refusing to incriminate himself. For those wondering, they have reconciled and she has been to several TNA tapings since the incident with Flair.
- Tommy Dreamer tore his MCL in his knee during last night’s angle. He confirmed this through his Twitter account and stated that he plans on keeping his “no surgery” streak alive by using a knee brace, tape, gum and whatever else he can in order to continue on. Amazing to think of all the crazy bumps and stunts over his career and managed to NEVER have a surgery. Same with Jeff Hardy too.
- TNA has had some recent discussions about bringing in John Bradshaw Leyfield to the company however he has not been to keen on the idea.
- Photos have surfaced of Linda Hogan on her new yacht. The yacht is called "Alimony". Yes, I am serious. That is not a joke. Poor Hulkster. LOL.
4) Independent / International News and Notes:
- In what has to be a heartfelt story, John Cena personally donated a “spinner watch” to the Trent Acid Memorial Show “Acid Fest” in Philadelphia last Saturday. Cena, who NEVER met Trent, decided to contribute out of the goodness of his heart and help the cause. The event raised $7,500 for Trent’s mother which was personally donated to her in the ring at the end of the show.
- In not so great news, Bryan Danielson has been telling people not to advertise him as “American Dragon” because World Wrestling Entertainment owns the trademark for it. I am hoping this isn’t true as there is no trademark listed by WWE for it as of this writing. If it is true, that SUCKS.
- Congratulations to Consequences (Austin) Creed for winning the 2010 Annual Super 8 tournament. Creed joins past winners like Ace Darling, Simon Diamond, Christopher Daniels, Low-Ki, Donovan Morgan, Paul London, Petey Williams, Davey Richards, & Jerry Lynn.
- In a story straight out of the late 90’s during the Monday Night War era, AAA Champion Dr. Wagner Jr. has apparently defected from the promotion (WITH THE TITLE) to go to rival CMLL. This is even bigger due to the fact that Dr. Wagner Jr. is on the cover of the AAA: Heroes of Wrestling video game being released on October 12th 2010 in the US for XBOX and PS3.
- In a story broken by
MIKE JOHNSON
, an upstart independent promotion in Florida is currently working on signing talents to exclusive contracts with promises of a television deal, dates, etc for launch in 2011. Now while there have been a billion people claim to be the next big thing in wrestling, this promotion is being financially staked by Milton Wilpon. Milton is part of the Wilpon family that owns the New York Mets sports franchise so he does have the finances to get this off the ground running. He has reached out to a few names from the past including Sean Waltman, Vader and others. Ideally they did not want any of this information getting out nor the names of talents leaking but that was inevitable.
- Good luck to Florida independent wrestler Chasyn Rance who was arrested this week for having sexual relations with a 15 year old girl. WOW.
- Terry Funk will be on the September 11th "Glory By Honor" Internet PPV ROH show from the Manhattan Center.
- ROH is holding a 12 team single elimination tournament for the July 16th and 17th TV tapings. The winners will be the number one ranked tag challengers for the Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli).

5) MMA News and Notes
- With the final number not officially announced, it is confirmed that UFC 116 (Lesnar/Carwin) grossed over 1,000,000 PPV buys making it at least the 2rd highest grossing UFC PPV ever. For all the hate Lesnar gets from hardcore MMA fans, the man is a HUGE DRAW.
- UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar has agreed to fight undefeated Cain Velasquez at UFC 21 on October 23rd, 2010 from Anaheim California.
- George St. Pierre has been quietly throwing around the idea of retirement. He is financially stable from all of his high profile UFC fights as he gets paid in the top tier of UFC guys and quite frankly, unless he moves up immediately to fight Anderson Silva, he is pretty much pound for pound the best fighter in MMA today.
- In an interview conducted this week, Tito Ortiz stated that Chuck Liddell should stay retired. But…unlike normal with his Chuck bashing, Tito was more concerned with Chuck’s well being. Tito said, “Basically health is more important than fights. While I would love to kick his ass, the fact is he has kids to take care of and I don’t want nothing serious to happen to him. Getting knocked out that many times, it gets kind of scary.” Tito also basically wants a 3rd fight with Forrest Griffith instead.
- Rich Franklin is out until at least December with the broken arm he suffered during the Chuck Liddell fight.
- Nate Diaz has signed a new, 4 fight contract with UFC.
- I can’t believe that someone who was well on his way to being a great baseball player at one point is reduced to
THIS
. Not only does he lose, he loses to a 60-YEAR-OLD!!!!
- Fedor Emelianenko is currently being talked about as the next opponent for Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem. Yes, the same Fedor who tapped in the first round of a fight he had no business losing is getting a title shot for it while the guy who beat him, Fabricio Werdum sits on the outside looking in. In Strikeforce’s defense, their logic is that it is the last fight on Fedor’s contract so they don’t want him to beat Werdum and then leave to UFC to fight in Japan leaving it open that Overeem is not the best in the world. They are trying to work it so that they put a champion’s clause in the contract (Which UFC has for all its fighters but Strikeforce does not) meaning that if Fedor beats Overeem, his contract automatically renews until he loses the title. So it’s their way of keeping him if he wins but if he loses, he is free to walk since their Heavyweight champ is the guy who beat him out of the promotion. Still sucks for Werdum though.
- Not that it matters much anyway because even though Werdum should get the title shot at Overeem since he beat the “best” he has stated that he plans on getting elbow surgery which will keep him out of action until 2011. So while Fedor doesn’t deserve a title shot, they need heavyweight main event fights and Fedor vs. Overeem is one.
- Strikeforce has scrapped the idea of holding a tournament to crown the new 185 pound champion for the title vacated by the defection of Jake Shields to UFC. Instead, they plan on having Jacare Souza fight Tim Kennedy with the winner becoming champion and then holding a tournament with the winner being first in line for a title shot.
- “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on Randy Couture: "I didn't see Randy's acting chops but I did see his fight skills. When you get the chance to fight with one of the elite fighters of all time, it's just a fun day at the office. Coming from a pro wrestling background people would always ask me 'Well what would happen if you and Randy squared off?'I pretty much chalk it up to this: I was a pro wrestler and Randy is a pro fighter. I was glad we were on a movie set and not in the Octagon. He's a very classy guy, very professional; he didn't stiff me one single time. I think he was very leery, very understanding of the skills that he possesses a true professional. It was a blast fighting with Randy but I knew that if he let one go I was probably gonna be looking up at the lights."
- NCAA wrestling studs, heavyweight Mark Ellis from the University of Missouri and Lance Palmer, a featherweight from Ohio State University have both signed to make the transition into MMA. Mark Ellis begins his training soon at the American Kickboxing Academy while Lance Palmer will be working with Team Alpha Male.
- James Toney has vowed to knock out Randy Couture and then said, and I quote, “Brock Lesnar’s bitch ass is next.” He said this….with a straight face…..in a non joking manner.
UFC 117
is on August 7, 2010 from Oakland California and the line-up is as follows:
-
MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE: Anderson Silva © vs. Chael Sonnen
-
Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
-
Junior Dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson
-
Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
-
Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
UFC 118
is on August 28, 2010 from Boston Massachusetts and the line-up is as follows:
-
UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE: Frankie Edgar © vs. B.J. Penn

-
Nick Osipczak vs. Greg Soto
-
Phil Baroni vs. John Salter
UFC 119
