Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It's Friday!!!!!

Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled “Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy.

WWE News and Notes:

- WWE had a minor shake up in the title picture with their debut “Money In The Bank” PPV concept. Kane not only won the Smackdown World Title MITB briefcase, he also cashed it in later on the show and defeated Rey Mysterio (who just won a grueling match against Jack Swagger) and then was beaten down by Swagger following the win.

- On the RAW side, a man who a few years ago most people didn’t see anything in took one more step closer to main event level act as former MTV Real World contestant Miz won the RAW MITB briefcase. He has one year to cash it in at his choosing.

- Apparently Vince McMahon has taken a personal liking to Miz mainly because of his work ethic both in and out of the ring. When he was placed on the main roster, basically….he sucked. But he worked hard to improve his in ring skills by training before shows in the ring as well as going on his own dime to acting classes to improve his believability as a character. He also works tirelessly on the road to do radio interviews and media appearances so basically he has no personal life outside of the ring. That means big things in McMahon’s eyes as he originally didn’t like John Cena either but when he saw Cena was the “go-to” guy when it came to outside the ring WWE commitments, Cena became his Golden Boy. Miz is currently doing the same.

- MITB at Mania may be no more. WWE is going to closely monitor the buy rate of this past Sunday’s PPV and if it draws significantly well then they plan on scrapping it from Mania and making it an annual PPV. If it bombs, then they will scrap the PPV and have it strictly at Mania. While I would be sad to see it leave Mania since it is a staple of the PPV since the concept was created, I understand it. It really isn’t necessary to Mania since people are going to buy the PPV regardless if the MITB concept is on it or not. What makes it better as well is that with a MITB in July, essentially someone could try to CASH IT IN at Mania and no one would know ahead of time. With the MITB at Mania, you know you have a year to cash it in meaning that if someone were to win it at Mania and hasn’t cashed it in by the following Mania, you know that they are going to cash it in then. Adds another element of surprise to it.

- Chris Jericho following the MITB PPV via Twitter: “Great ppv tonight! Congrats to Kane for his hard work and dedication to his company for 15 yrs. My company is a powerhouse that will never be beat. All other companies need to watch and learn…”

- With his title win, Kane became the first “WWE Superstar®©” to win the WWE, World and ECW titles while all three titles are under the WWE brand. (Big Show held all three but his World title win was when he was in WCW and it was the top belt there.)

- RAW following MITB was a really strong show that built the newest angles heading into Summerslam well. Tons of storyline developments, a PPV quality match to OPEN the show and new feuds brewing. Good stuff.

- So Bret Hart is back…again. This time not as a GM but instead as a tag team partner in a 7 on 7 match at Summerslam. Sigh. I’ve said a million times he needs to be kept out of the ring. It’s surprising that he is back though since he is scheduled to get married….TOMORROW.

- Randy Orton is getting a title shot at Summerslam against Sheamus. This basically confirms that HHH will not be back for Summerslam as he was originally scheduled to be Sheamus’ opponent.

- Miz has “IT”. The crowd was going crazy for him on RAW when it looked like he was going to cash in his MITB and actually win against Sheamus. Has there been anyone in the history of wrestling who has come as far as Miz has from his beginning? He was HORRENDOUS when he debuted and now he is a damn good worker, fantastic on the mic and is super over with the crowd.

- Former Reality Show Star and TNA star Johnny Fairplay via Twitter after Miz won MITB: “Jonny Fairplay is remembering back to 2004 when Jeff Jarrett told me there was no money in The Miz. Thanks, Jeff."

- I really wish those who dislike Sheamus would really give him a shot as he is definitely awesome. He is good on the mic and can work. I don’t understand why so many fans are down on him.

- The 7-on-7 mentioned above will be The Nexus (Barrett/Otunga/Sheffield/Gabriel/Tarver/Young/Slater) vs. Cena/Morrison/Jericho/Edge/R-Truth/Great Khali/Bret Hart. I’m extremely surprised about seeing Khali back in a main event angle. I understand Cena’s logic by asking a monster to join them. The flip side of that is that I do not think that Khali makes it to the PPV. I think they set it up so that Nexus takes him out before the PPV to get an advantage. Ideally, you can bring back Daniel Bryan to join the team which makes the most sense. If not, Evan Bourne.

- Also surprised to see both John Morrison and R-Truth on the team. Not because they aren’t main event level talent but because earlier in the show, both men had respective angles with Ted DiBiase and Miz making me think that they were setting up matches for Summerslam. Weird.

- “Either you’re NEXUS or you’re against us”!!! Not a bad saying. I think it has potential to grow on me. Don’t love it yet but don’t hate it either.

- SPEAKING OF HATE, I can’t wait till they get rid of the computer GM. Although I am glad they limited it on RAW this week.

- WWE Management is extremely high on Wade Barrett. He has delivered in spades for what they have asked as him as a speaker and leader of NEXUS.

- While lifting up Mark Henry in a fireman’s carry is impressive, Barrett did injure Henry’s shoulder with his finisher on RAW. He did not get any heat for it as it was obviously not on purpose.

- HHH’s injury is more severe than originally reported. It was not a torn bicep tendon but in fact a torn bicep. That means he is scheduled to be out until October the earliest but possibly as late as December. If that is indeed the case, WWE will probably just hold him out of action until the Royal Rumble.

- Ricky Steamboat is still in the hospital. The fact that his family has been stating he was getting out the weekend he was admitted, then the following week said he was getting out soon and yet he still is not out is definitely NOT A GOOD THING.

- SPOILER ALERT: It is announced on tonight’s Smackdown that Kane is scheduled to defend his World title against Rey Mysterio at Summerslam. That means Undertaker WILL NOT be back in time for Summerslam. This is most likely why Kane won the title at MITB since Kane vs. Undertaker does not need a title around it. Kane is most likely going to be revealed as the guy who put Taker in his vegetative state. Their match was going to be a casket match so adding a title to that feud is pointless.

- DAVE MELTZER adds that he is hearing that Kane was given one last run on top out of respect because he has been telling people that he plans on retiring soon.

- While on the subject of Taker, he was forced by WWE to skip UFC 116 due to his “vegetative state”.

- Vince McMahon has informed his marketing department that he does not want anything related to HBK being used for ANYTHING. Not exactly sure why this is or where Vince soured on Michaels. By all accounts, Shawn is perfectly content right now and does not plan on coming back to wrestling in any capacity. Even for a one off appearance on television.

- Basically CM Punk was unmasked last week by Big Show because WWE pulled the plug on the Punk/Mysterio feud. With Taker’s injury (causing Mysterio to get a title run) and Punk’s elbow surgery, the feud lost momentum so they just decided to scrap it and go their separate ways with both men. Punk is still a few weeks away from returning. Sucks that they couldn’t follow up and have Mysterio unmask him but injuries happen.

- The other Masked SES member is UNMASKED TONIGHT!!!! He is revealed to be………..

- Chris Jericho is expected to take an extended leave of absence when his contract expires in September. He is definitely NOT going to TNA but he is going to be gone a while….again. He has planned some tour dates with Fozzy for September in Europe as well as his new book coming out and possible acting gigs as his ABC show Downfall will be filming a few episodes for a potential mid-season replacement. So he definitely has his hands full.

- The new Chris Jericho DVD will be a three disc set titled “Breaking the Code: Behind the Walls of Chris Jericho.” Jericho himself is helping with the match listing and actually got the footage of his professional debut (1st match) against Lance Storm in Calgary added.

- Even though he hasn’t officially debuted on television, Alberto Del Rio is already getting heat on him. He has been complaining on the road about having to work without his mask (he is a masked wrestler from Mexico) as he feels it was a big deal when he was in Mexico and doesn’t understand why they do not want him wearing it on WWE television since he never lost it.

- Jack Swagger’s father last week on Smackdown was played by Jim Golden who used to be Bunkhouse Buck in WCW.

- Anyone notice how Cody Rhodes looks NOTHING like his dad Dusty physique-wise and Husky Harris looks nothing like his dad Mike Rotunda physique-wise? Now swap dads and see what you get. Hmmmmmm? The 80’s was a wild time in the NWA. Just saying.

- WWE has announced that the October 18th RAW will be hosted by Bobb’e Thompson who stars in the WWE Film “Knucklehead” alongside Big Show. The October 25th Raw will be hosted by Country Music Star Toby Keith. Keith is a big time wrestling fan and appeared in the EARLY TNA in 2002 when they were still in Nashville.

- Jim Ross commented in his BLOG that several “WWE Superstars©®” who can afford it are now using personal tour buses to travel from town to town. Not for nothing but I always wondered why this wasn’t in place years ago. If you get a few superstars to chip in; you can get a bus similar to what musicians use when on tour (with a driver) to take you around during a houseshow loop. That way you have a fridge, personal bathroom & most importantly beds for the Superstars to rest and sleep in rather than cramming into a car and not sleeping till they hit the hotels. Even on LONG drives, you can skip a hotel completely and sleep on a bus thus saving more money. You can also bring your family with you on the busses and use the costs as a tax write off at the end of the year. Good plan if you ask me. So far confirmed with the tour busses are HHH, Big Show, Sheamus and Ted DiBiase.

- Looks like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson won’t be appearing on WWE TV this summer after all. He had stated months ago that he had indeed spoken to the WWE about a return and was targeting the summer for it. With the beginning of filming of the new “Fast and Furious” movie taking place, he will not have time to make a cameo.

- Trailer for “ THE OTHER GUYS

- Poster for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s next film, “ FASTER ”.

- The title of this VIDEO says it all. LOL.

- Posted for Trish Stratus’ new movie “ BAIL ENFORCERS ”.

- Shawn Michaels is now on Twitter @mrandmrshbk.

- Randy Orton is now on Twitter @RealRKOrton .

- One of Orton’s first tweets in response to Bryan Danielson: “I understand why it happened. But he def deserves to be there, I'm sure he'll b back. Very talented in my opinion."

- Orton on whether he complained to management about Ken Anderson: "He is in denial. He thinks you have to be able to do a moonsault to know how to work. And, as far as dropping me on my head, he did. He never got to see all 4 camera angles of him doing it. I did. Plus, the left side of my neck down to my trap was sore all week in Mexico. I did tell Ken that he shouldn't be dropping me on my head with such a simple basic move. He never said sorry, and even called me a liar after the match. I remember looking at him in disbelief. And yes, I did tell management I did not want to work with him after that. Who wouldn't? That's my side.”

- Former WWE Diva MOLLY HOLLY is getting married. CONGRATS!!! By the way, I saw the following headline on another wrestling site in regards to the above: “Former WWE Diva To Get Married, Lose Virginity This Month Yes, that was the headline.

- Alicia Fox with her SISTER WWE Developmental Diva Christina Crawford.

- Former TNA star Austin “Consequences” Creed has been signed to a WWE Developmental deal. Congrats to Creed who was severely misused after his TNA debut.

- In an interesting story, Mattel who has taken over the WWE action figure line, has signed both Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior to be part of the line. So while WWE is on the outs with both (more so Savage than Warrior), WWE action figures of both are being released. Savage was at the San Diego Comic Con with the new action figure promoting.

- Bret Hart will be wrestling in Madison Square Garden one last time. WWE is promoting their September 25th Live Event as “Bret Hart Appreciation Night” and Bret will team with the Hart Dynasty against 3 members of Nexus.

- Former WCW wrestler and announcer Steve “Mongo” McMichael was inducted into the college football Hall of Fame.

TNA News and Notes:

- TNA has renamed the “Hard Justice” PPV to “Hardcore Justice: One Last Stand” in honor of the ECW theme. Again, I still believe that they are definitely trending on thin ice with the constant mentioning of ECW on air and in promos. WWE has to be watching closely and this could end up bad for TNA if they make a mistake promoting it with the premise that it is ECW. But for those wondering, they can mention that the workers worked for ECW all they want because it is nothing more than FACT. Saying Tommy Dreamer used to be in ECW is a FACT. Saying Raven is a former ECW Champion is FACT. They cannot be sued for that.

- Jerry Lynn confirmed via his official website that he will wrestle Rob Van Dam in the main event of the TNA “Hardcore Justice” PPV.

- Tommy Dreamer has reached out to all former ECW talents not contracted to WWE about appearing on the PPV. This includes Sandman, Sabu, Spike Dudley, The FBI, Balls Mahoney, Axl Rotten, New Jack, Too Cold Scorpio, CW Anderson etc.

- Sandman and Sabu are both confirmed for the PPV as they appear in the new ad released to PPV providers today.

- No more Dr. Stevie. He is now known as Stevie Richards again.

- Simon Diamond is expected to come out of retirement for the Hardcore Justice PPV and he will be teaming with his former ECW partner Johnny Swinger.

- Not expected to appear however is former ECW tag team champion Roadkill who has retired from wrestling.

- Steve Corino also stated in a recent interview that he has not been contacted but would not come if he was because he is all about the present and not living in the past. If you remember, Corino skipped all of the WWE themed ECW PPV’s/events as well as Shane Douglas’ “Hardcore Homecoming” shows.

- Tajiri and Super Crazy are both booked in Japan on the day of the PPV.

- Both Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are planning on being at the latest set of Impact tapings next week.

- TNA LINE OF THE WEEK: Last week on Impact, Sarita was brawling with Taylor Wilde and then started choking her. During this, Taz said on commentary: “You know Tenay, you can get fired in some places for doing that.” HAHA!!!

- Remember when Tomko was getting a push a few years back and was on the verge of becoming a main event TNA act. HA!!!

- The latest on the Paul Heyman front is that there has been no movement. Dixie Carter is still trying to bring him in but won’t concede on the hiring/firing part of the job. Heyman is adamant that if he comes in, he have full control over the booking and the roster (i.e. hiring/firing). On top of that, he is DEAD SET against an ECW themed PPV and will not appear on the show, even if he agrees to a deal before then.

- TNA’s last PPV drew approximately 8,000 PPV buys. Not a typo. By comparison, the year WCW went out of business, their lowest PPV buy rate was….40, 000. Yeah, that is definitely not a good thing for TNA.

- It is expected that Christopher Daniels will be brought back to the company soon. Amazingly enough, even though he was released from his contract MONTHS ago, he was never removed from the TNA roster page as is actually STILL THERE as of this writing.

- Scott Hall was released from the hospital with his double pneumonia. Hopefully being close to death will help him out. Sadly, I do not think this will be the case. By all accounts, a lot of close friends of his see that he is coming close to rock bottom and he isn’t wanting help so they are doing the only thing that they can do and that is leaving him to hit it without their support anymore. Many people, who you wouldn’t expect to abandon him, have.

- Desmond Wolfe and Matt Morgan are not on the most popular list by TNA management. While Morgan is understood since he hasn’t exactly gotten over to the level or his push, no one seems to have a clue why Wolfe is in the doghouse.

- Beer Money and the Motor City Machine Guns however are tearing the house down hence why they were given a “Best-of-5” series against each other.

- Reid Flair has begun training with Terry Taylor for his TNA debut. No word on when that is but sources say it is inevitable.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- Generation Me is back working Ring of Honor shows this weekend in Illinois as well as Amazing Kong.

- In addition to the already mentioned Sean Waltman and Vader, also contacted by the new start-up Florida based promotion mentioned last week are Scott Steiner, Shane Douglas, Booker T, El Hijo de Rey Mysterio (Sr. not WWE Jr.), Too Cold Scorpio & Larry Zbyszko.

- Chasyn Rance was dropped as a partner/office worker/wrestler in the above mentioned post due to his arrest for sexing up a 15 year old girl.

- Former WWE Diva RYAN SHAMROCK .

- Jim Cornette is back working in conjunction with Ohio Valley Wrestling as he will be conducting a wrestling seminar and working with Danny Davis to help get OVW back off the ground.

- Last week, former ECW wrestler Chris Hamrick threatened suicide via his Facebook account. Friends of his called local police and he was “saved” as he had 27 sleeping pills in his possession at the time police arrived. This week, Hamrick was back to working indies.

- I’m going to direct quote this verbatim from the latest WRESTLING OBSERVER NEWSLETTER because I know not all of my readers get it but they should all know it:

“Steve Stone, a longtime Midwest indie wrestler, who noted to us that he just had his last match on 7/16 after 13 years asked that we put in that he thinks all longtime indie wrestlers who are suffering from either bad headaches or memory issues should immediately check themselves out. He noted that a lot of people try to ignore symptoms because of the mentality to keep going. He was checked out, was told he needed to quit wrestling because his brain didn’t look like a 29-year old brain should look. His doctor warned him that continuing wrestling would risk his health and could make him a vegetable.”

- Hopefully Meltzer or Alvarez don’t give JG sh*t about me quoting the above but the fact is, it needed to be mentioned everywhere. I know a lot of independent wrestlers my age or younger who have the mentality that they have to keep going even when hurt. At the end of the day, health and quality of life are more important than wrestling and a lot of my friends don’t seem to have the mental capacity of someone their age. This is due to working through injuries. So if you are an indie wrestler out there reading this and have the above problems, get yourself checked out. Please.

- A lot of rumblings going around in regards to Dawn Marie’s “Wrestler’s Rescue” organization. I will withhold judgment until more information is released but I will just say that the stuff I am hearing isn’t positive in any way, shape or form.

MMA News and Notes

- Jake Shields is officially a part of UFC as he has signed to fight at 170 lbs (down from his Strikeforce 185 lbs.) He has lofty goals ahead as he wants both George St. Pierre and Anderson Silva over the next year. His first fight is scheduled for UFC 121 against Martin Kampmann.

- Also signed for UFC 121 is Tito Ortiz (in his first fight since undergoing neck fusion surgery) vs. Matt Hamill and heavyweights Brendan Schaub vs. Gabriel Gonzaga. Hamill was actually one of Ortiz’s students on season 3 of TUF.

- Bobby Lashley’s next fight is finally scheduled. He will fight on August 21st on Strikeforce: Houston against Chad Griggs. Griggs is 8-1 career and is the first Lashley opponent to pose a legit threat to his undefeated record.

- Ken Shamrock was TKO’d by Pedro Rizzo last weekend. Ken has now lost 8 or his last 10 fights. He is 46 years old. It’s time to hang it up Ken. Please. He didn’t get knocked out but did absolutely nothing of note in the fight other than get leg kicked to death and pummeled by punches. After what felt like the hundredth leg kick, his leg just buckled and he dropped to one knee. Rizzo ran in to finish him off but Ken signaled to referee John McCarthy that he was done and the fight was waived off. Sad end to a legendary career.

- The winner of Junior Dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson next weekend at UFC 117 will fight the winner of Brock Lesnar © vs. Cain Velasquez next year for the heavyweight title.

- December 11th, George St. Pierre © vs. Josh Koscheck.

- On the Dave Letterman show, when discussing/promoting the Expendables, Sylvester Stallone said the following: “Someone asked me, 'You put all these tough guys, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, in a room together, who comes out?' If you walked in 10 minutes later you'd see Randy Couture sitting on top of us having a chocolate fudge sundae."

- UFC is close to finalizing Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida for November.
