T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #168

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: Insanity Original Dr. Tom Prichard is back!  First interview since leaving WWE!  GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

MATT NOTE:

WWE NEWS AND NOTES:

- RAW 1,000 .

- PICTURE posted on the wall of the locker room before RAW 1,000.

- RAW 1,000 was an AWESOME show and the ratings proved it as over 6,000,000 people tuned it drawing a 3.9 rating. The show was both entertaining with the nostalgia acts and in continuing angles that were already ongoing. Most importantly, they provided you with 4 main events for their “BIG” PPVS in that it build towards CM Punk vs. John Cena at Summerlam, Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar at Summerslam, CM Punk vs. The Rock at the Royal Rumble and Rock vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania. Plus a teased celebrity angle involving Daniel Bryan and Charlie Sheen was set for Summerslam. So long term planning on WWE’s part at a time where the audience was a lot bigger than normal (RAW’s ratings were drawing about 3 – 4 million people per week). The problem is, without all the nostalgia acts, how do you consistently book a 3 hour show from week to week with the lack of depth on the roster? We’ll find out on Monday.

- DEGENERATION X .

- DX definitely popped me. I was left wondering though what the hell was wrong with X-Pac? He seemed weirder than usual. Funny seeing Road Dog working for WWE as an agent (and many say he is being groomed for the top agent’s spot under the eventual HHH regime) and Billy Gunn hugging HHH after all the bad blood and crap they spoke about him. For the uninformed though, Billy Gunn did in fact apologize publically for the first time right here on this very website in an interview with James Guttman.

- The HHH/Trish skit would have been funnier if they were allowed to be more crass with it like they were when it FIRST HAPPENED years ago. Either WWE is now too PG or Trish didn’t feel comfortable going “all the way” with it.

- Slick was awesome. I am definitely on board if he performs every WWE marriage ceremony from here to eternity.

- Complete and utter waste of Mick Foley and Bret Hart though. Sad.

- A.J. has my support as GM. Finally someone different in the role who isn’t going to play the traditional heel GM. This has potential.

- The rest of the legends used were short and sweet. From the backstage segments involving Mae Young and her son “ THE HAND ” to the legends helping Lita was all well done. PS, that clothesline from hell? Well, let JBL tell you.

- JBL on Twitter following RAW: "Many thanks to @HeathSlaterOMRB a good talented young man who took a heck of a bump for me last night on @wwe Raw 1000. Much appreciated!" If you skipped that segment, Slater looked like he was KILLED by the clothesline from hell. OUCH.

- Due to the success of RAW 1,000 and the nostalgia pops the legends have been getting, WWE plans on utilizing legends weekly going forward. So Heath Slater may have a job for life considering the legends enjoyed working for him.

- Paul Heyman ACCEPTS Triple H’s proposal.

- Not for nothing, while the segment was awesome and Heyman/HHH/Steph get props for their promo abilities and acting, this segment was WEIRD. It felt as if Stephanie was ripping into Heyman but she was speaking on behalf of Vince. Everything she said was shots at Heyman and is likely how Vince has ALWAYS felt about him over the years. Tired of hearing him be such a creative genius. Tired of people (wrestlers) praising him. It is as if this was a backstage argument instead of a wrestling segment. It was awesome but did not fit the whole Lesnar/HHH feud in any way, shape or form. As far as the Lesnar part, at first I was upset that HHH got the upper hand but after giving it some thought, it was fine. HHH needed a spot to shine especially since he was “injured” by Lesnar months ago and it was their first confrontation since then. It isn’t as if he laid out Lesnar and stood over his unconscious body. He clotheslined him out the ring and Lesnar smartened up and decided not to come back. There are several weeks between now and the match and honestly, Lesnar is going to have plenty of time to get the upper hand. He is set to lay out Shawn Michaels on HBK Appreciation night in a few weeks. He can even “bully” Stephanie backstage or something like that. So long as he beats HHH and does so convincingly, he will be fine.

- Stephanie McMahon looked as GOOD as she has in years, maybe ever.

- The Undertaker RETURNS .

- Does anyone know why the heels calmly waited for Undertaker to get to the ring following his 10 minute entrance rather than all attack Kane simultaneously while Undertaker took forever and a day to arrive? Wouldn’t that have made more sense? 6 on 1 are better odds than 6 on 2 no?

- The CM Punk HEEL TURN was greatly done. Of course, I like many others would have preferred a Cena heel turn but I have resigned myself to the fact that it will NEVER happen. So with that being said, I am 100% on board with Punk as a heel. He is better as a heel and has a bigger variety of fresh opponents as a heel. Besides, since he is going into a feud with Cena first, he may not get that booed. The fans are still going to like him. It all depends on what happens Monday and his reasoning behind the turn.

- Fozzie Bear discussing catch phrases = GOLD:

  • Excuse Me!!”
  • “WHAT?!?!”
  • “Excuse me!!”
  • WHAT?!?!”
  • “I SAID EXCUSE ME”
  • “WOULD YOU PLEASE, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!”

- SIGN OF THE NIGHT: “If Cena wins, we will complain on the internet.”

- Blink if you missed it but throughout the show when any old clips aired from the Attitude Era, the old WWF scratch logo was not blurred out. WWE had to blur it out due to a lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund but have stopped blurring it out.

- After RAW went off the air, the Rock and John Cena recovered and laid out the Big Show. Cena nailed him with an Attitude Adjustment and then the Rock went to hit a “People’s Elbow”. Rock however did not have an elbow pad on and grabbed a mic midway through the move to make mention of this. Cena offered him one of his “CenaNation” arm bands to which Rock replied that Cena must use headbands for his arms since they are so big. He then nailed Show with the “People’s Elbow” to send the crowd home happy.

- As soon as RAW ended, trending on Twitter was: #NOSTONECOLD and #NOAUSTIN.

- “Stone Cold” Steve Austin RESPONDS to why he missed the 1,000th RAW.

- With Austin having knee surgery (and an unreported shoulder surgery earlier this year) on top of his age (47 years old) and the fact that he has a myriad of other nagging injuries most importantly his neck, it is VERY UNLIKELY that he will participate at Wrestlemania 29 vs. CM Punk. One of the reasons for the CM Punk heel turn was done by WWE to be one of the catalysts to lead to a possible Austin match but realistically at his age, to recover, be 1000% and in ring shape by April is cutting it close. Normal knee surgery recovery is about 6 months. That would put him ready to start training for a comeback in February. That would be cutting it close to make Mania. In my eyes, he should be done. The benefits do not outweigh the risks. As much as I would love to see it, Austin does not need to wrestle. He is set for life financially and with the risk of permanent injury at his age, it wouldn’t benefit him. But at the end of the day, it is his call to make.

- Lawler on commentary during the Punk/Cena title match: “We’ve never in the history of WWE had a Money In The Bank winner announce when he was going to cash it in advance.” You know, except for the time Rob Van Dam announced it in advance building up to the ECW “One Night Only” PPV.

- Randy Orton was indeed backstage at RAW 1,000 as he lives in St. Louis. He is set to return next week to RAW as his suspension ends on Monday. He is set to be on Smackdown next week as well and will resume a main event level push despite the two strikes against him.

- WWE officials did want Ric Flair on the show however due to the TNA lawsuit, they are not going to sign Flair until it is settled. Also noteworthy is that WWE found out that Flair did sign a no compete when he was officially granted his release meaning he is still within the 90 days of that clause.

- Where was Cody Rhodes? I was shocked to say the least that he did not make a RAW 1,000 appearance.

- Mark Henry is not medically cleared to return yet as he is still a few weeks away from returning. WWE was hoping to bring him back but he is still rehabbing from his surgery. He is currently in London for the Olympics as Henry was on the US Olympic teams for weightlifting in both 1992 and 1996.

- Alicia Webb a.k.a. Ryan Shamrock was backstage at RAW 1,000. She wasn’t asked to appear on camera by WWE. Instead, she was actually there on her own for a charity event and requested to be backstage prior to the show. Her backstage presence was confirmed by Jim Ross via Twitter.

- Harley Race was also backstage as he lives in nearby Kansas City. WWE was going to use him on air however he has a hard time getting around and other than showing him sitting in a chair talking or something, he decided to not be used on television.

- Ted DiBiase returned to WWE this week after missing several months with both an ankle and shoulder injury. He worked the Smackdown live events last weekend and will be brought back to television soon.

- The latest on the WWE Network is that the target date for launch is now Mania 29. So it is not going to launch in November which was originally set after they missed last years Mania target date.

- The ECW trademark filed by Mocker LLC has been DENIED. The reason given for denial was the fact that it would cause confusion in the market place being that while WWE let the letters ECW lapse for use as a wrestling promotion, they still hold trademarks for ECW One Night Stand, ECW Extremists and ECW Vixens for wrestling purposes. The trademark office cited TNA as an example of how a trademark owner can carve a niche in the marketplace without infringing on trademarks of another entity. Mocker LLC has 6 months to respond/appeal.

- While still not made official by WWE, Kharma confirmed via twitter to a fan question that she was in fact granted her release by WWE. Key word is granted meaning it was likely her decision to request it. She also noted that it does not mean she will never come back. So it sounds like it was a mutual deal.

- PWINSIDER is reporting that the reason Alex Riley was “de-pushed” so rapidly and is now sitting in the doghouse was due to a backstage incident with John Cena. Cena was allegedly ribbing on Riley in the locker room to the point where Riley was visibly upset at it. Riley then came back with a “personal comment” that everyone in the locker room thought was way out of line and there were WWE officials in the area when it was said. Sources say it “broke the code of the locker room” as the comment Riley made was about Cena’s personal home life and not about Cena. WWE officials reported this to Vince and the rest is history.

- In confirming without actually confirming, a fan asked Riley about the above situation and Riley replied: “I’d rather not comment about this…at this time.” Meaning it is in fact true. Worse for him though is that he said “at this time”. That cannot be a good sign for him career wise.

- AJ is AWESOME .

- In an interesting tidbit, Kane has arrived early to the past 3 episodes of RAW and has been sitting in on both creative and production meetings prior to the show. It is said that Kane is considering taking a role backstage once his in ring career ends which could be sooner rather than later as he is in his 40’s.

- Triple H has been doing something that has not been done by WWE management in the past and that is listening to crowd reactions. Prior to in ring segments on RAW, HHH has been listening to crowd reactions during the show and then changing things on the fly to play off those responses throughout the show.

- Best of luck to the Great Khali as he had a tumor in his pituitary gland removed. It is a similar surgery that The Big Show has years ago. The tumor would have ended his life at a young age similar to Andre The Giant who had the same disease. It is also what caused Khali (and Andre and Show) to grow as tall as he did. Normal recovery from this is 4 or 5 months.

- TRISH STRATUS did a new PHOTOSHOOT . WOW.

- Where’s Ezekiel Jackson? Remember when he was getting a push?

- WWE made a bold move and trimmed their PPV’s for 2013 by one. No longer will WWE hold two PPV’s in the month of April. Instead, they announced this week that Extreme Rules will take place on May 19th and will be the first PPV after Wrestlemania. Traditionally the April PPV would be the lowest drawing PPV of the year since it comes so close after Wrestlemania and only had 3 weeks build up.

- In honor of RAW 1,000; here is a compilation of ALL of the RAW INTRO’S EVER .

- The Bella Twins in MAXIM .

- What is happening HERE ?

- After facing countless pressure from the Democratic Party, Linda McMahon released her 2010 tax returns and her and Vince filed jointly. They earned $30.6 million in 2010 and paid $4.7 million in taxes.

- William Balfour, the man convicted of killing the mother, brother and nephew of David Otunga’s fiancé Jennifer Hudson was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences plus an additional 120 years without the possibility of parole this week.

- Old School John Cena RAP BATTLE from 2003.

- FREEBIRD ROAD .

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes

- TNA Knockout Velvet Sky is reportedly done with the company as of last weekend. Her profile was removed from the TNA roster page. She worked her last show on July 14th. Her contract expired and she chose not to renew it. No word on whether or not WWE is interested. Sky’s former partner Angelina Love left the promotion a few weeks back. Sadly Sky nor Love would be allowed to use those names on the independent circuit so a reuniting of their famous team “The Beautiful People” is not to be unless the call themselves something else.

- WWE is however interested in both Bully Ray and Brother D-von whose contracts with TNA expire in about 5 weeks. Both men have rejuvenated their careers over the past year, especially Ray who has been one of the top heels in all of wrestling. A WWE run is not out of the question and both men currently help out backstage in TNA as well which is something WWE could use more of, veteran leadership.

- These contract issues are coming up because TNA is looking to restructure all deals that are close to expiring. Most talents are against the restructuring of these deals as the terms are less for what they are signed as well as for “per appearance” deals. The TNA undercard/prelim guys are already under per appearance deals meaning that they are only paid if they make it on television. If they are at a show but do not work, they aren’t paid. Main event guys however are under guaranteed deals and to be under that deal and then get offered a per appearance is kind of insulting. Especially since TNA is singing the praises of being live every week and television has improved. TNA is expected however to try and retain Bully Ray but if WWE comes with a strong offer, things will be up in the air.

- Matt Morgan commented to a fan via Twitter about returning to TNA wrestling and Morgan replied that the chances of him going back there fall between “NEVER and EVER”.

- Spike TV and TNA management has begun discussions to keep TNA Impact as a live show going forward after their summer run. No decision has been made to do so yet but it is likely that they will since the show has maintained (and slightly grew) their audience.

- TNA has officially made their first Hall of Fame event separate from the “Bound For Glory” PPV as on Saturday, October 13th they will hold the induction ceremony and banquet at the Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix Arizona. Tickets will be $125 per ticket or you could buy as a part of a package with the BFG PPV the following day.

- Congratulations to Kurt Angle who was married last weekend in Pittsburgh. Angle married longtime girlfriend Giovanna Yannotti in a small ceremony and the couple have one child together. Angle also announced that Giovanna is expecting their second child.

- Kurt Angle TRAINING FOR THE OLYMPICS.

- Nick “Eugene” Dinsmore worked a dark match tryout prior to Impact last week. Dinsmore is the head trainer at Ohio Valley Wrestling which is the developmental territory of TNA.

- Congratulations to Samoa Joe and Magnus as the won Pro Wrestlnig Noah’s tag team titles in Japan.

- Sam Shaw gets voted in Gut Check. Really? Joey Ryan is a no but Sam Shaw is a yes? Also, if guys who suck keep making it then what is the point of the competition? Finally, why did Al Snow not watch the match AFTER he ran off chasing after Joey Ryan? Snow said he didn't see the match so he had to say no. Um...the match was about a minute long and there was an hour between the match and the voting. Hell, Snow could have voted last and watched the match while Pritchard and Taz voted. WTF?

- Claire Lynch is f*cking awful. I do not think there has been a worse actress in wrestling history. That sure is saying something.

- Austin Aries is a damn good champion. I really hope TNA calls an audible and keeps the title on him past Bound for Glory. I want him main eventing the PPV rather than losing the title before BFG so they could go with Roode vs. Storm. I will settle for a three way.

- I was with the Aces and Eights storyline but I definitely do not think it should dominate the telecast from begining to end. It should not be another nWo.

- I know he is a cornerstone for TNA but is it selfish of me to want Kurt Angle back in WWE? He'd be so awesome there.

- Via Eric Bischoff’s Twitter on Monday: "Congrats to the team at WWE on an amazing 1000 episodes. Phenomenal achievement!"

TNA HARDCORE JUSTICE PPV is on August 12, 2012 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA TITLE: Austin Aries © vs. Bobby Roode

Independent / International News and Notes:

- In addition to the already announced The Sandman, Chris Masters, Luke Gallows, Sami Callihan and Shawn Daivari; Tommy Dreamer has announced that his “House of Hardcore” debut show will feature WWE HALL OF FAMER EDGE making an appearance. Dreamer also said that the Steiner Brothers will be reuniting on the show in addition to the Young Bucks. Dreamer is stacking the debut show to make a major splash in the independent scene. The debut show is on October 6th in Poughkeepsie New York.

- The August 11th Ring of Honor iPPV will feature Mike Bennett & Maria Kanellis vs. Eddie Edwards & Sara Del Rey in what is scheduled to be one of the last independent events for Del Rey before she joins WWE.

- Congrats to Charlie Haas and wife Jackie Gayda-Haas as the welcomed their son, Charles D. Haas III on Monday. It is Haas and Gayda-Hass’ 4th child together. They now have 2 boys and 2 girls.

- I am starting to think that Davey Richards MAY NOT BE COMING BACK to ROH.

MMA News and Notes

- Direct Dana White quote: “UFC 149 sucked and was an embarrassment.”

- The UFC Middleweight division is clamoring with talent lining up to try and dethrone Anderson Silva. Well one major name was Hector Lombard. Lombard was the Bellator Middleweight Champion and like Silva, has not lost in over 6 years. That changed last weekend when he lost a unanimous decision to Tim Boetsch in his UFC debut. Boetsch, who was considered in the top tier middleweights and was also in line for a shot is now out indefinitely as he broke his foot in the win. That leaves Michael Bisping, Vitor Belfort (who was crushed by Silva several months ago and realistically shouldn’t be in the title picture), Alan Belcher and Chris Weidman.

- Belfort vs. Belcher has been added to the October 13th show in Rio de Janeiro.

- Is Urijah Faber overrated? He has lost 4 consecutive title fights over two different weight classes ever since coming to UFC. That has to means something no? He obviously isn’t world champion material. He was dispatched by Renan Barao over 5 rounds. Barao is now the interim Bantamweight Champion and will go on to face Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz once Cruz returns from his injury. In Faber’s defense, he did get his ribs broken 2 minutes into the fight and fought 4 more rounds after that. So he is a warrior. But I had Barao winning before the fight was even announced and that would have likely been the same result had his ribs not broke.

- Chael Sonnen TEXT to Urijah Faber. Note, that is a legit text message from Chael. Not a joke. LOL.

- UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon "Bones" Jones has RUINED the division. Why do I think this? Becuase it was announced this week that it is likely the most impressive Light Heavyweight on the UFC on Fox 4 fight next weekend will get the next title shot vs. the winner of Jones/Henderson. The four participants are Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Brandon Vera, Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida. The problem is, should Jones beat Henderson (very likley), then Jones has already beaten Rua, Bader and Machida. VERY CONVINCINGLY I MIGHT ADD. Who would want to see any of those match ups again let alone pay to see them? If somehow Vera is the winner, well honestly, Jones would run through him fairly easily too. Is it time for Jones to tryout heavyweight? Maybe Anderson Silva move up in weight? Otherwise, Jones is going to just sit around at Light Heavyweight dominating everyone.

- Dana White clarified his relationship with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson earlier this week. White noted that he has no beef with Rampage. His exact words were: “Rampage loves us one minute and hates us the next. He loves the sport and he hates the sport. Loves the media and hates the media. I don’t have that type of relationship with him. I don’t dislike or hate him. If you decide you don’t want to be here anymore or don’t want to fight anymore, we’re not going to hold you down and keep you to it. Rampage and I had that discussion and he said if that is true, cut me from my contract right now. I told him that we have had his back every step of the way and honored every contract he has had with UFC, honor yours. He said that was fair enough and he would fight the last fight on his contract which he is.”

- Frank Mir is going to be facing Strikeforce Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier on the September 29th show int he co-main event under the Lightweight Title between Gilbert melendez vs. Pat Healy. There are some MMA fans saying this is a bad fight for Cormier so early in his career however I say the exact opposite. Frank Mir is NOT going to be able to take Cormier down. That is a fact. Cormier has proven that he has stand up skills and that he is capable of knocking someone out. Mir, while he does hit hard, may not be able to stand with Cormier. The only shot he has at winning is if (when) Cormier takes him down to pull off a submission from his back. While Mir is capable of that, odds are Cormier is going to just keep it standing.

- Zuffa and Showtime had previously amended their deal stating that if a Strikeforce fighter has a contract that expires, UFC CANNOT sign that fighter until the Zuffa/Showtime deal is up. So essentially it is a no-compete clause to keep UFC from purging Strikeforce’s top talents as they were doing early on with Nick Diaz and Alistair Overeem.

- There is still no set date for Junior Dos Santos to defend the UFC Heavyweight title vs. Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos is still recovering from an undisclosed injury. It’s possible that this fight will not happen in 2012.

- A non-UFC related reality show is set to make the airwaves in August called “Fight Factory”. It is basically a reality show that follows the members of the American Kickboxing Academy also known as the A.K.A. which features a roster of Cain Velasquez, Phil Baroni, Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, Jon Fitch, Mike Kyle and others.

- Bellator's biggest star Eddie Alvarez is fighting the last fight of his contract on October 12th in Canada and it is expected that he is going to receive a huge offer from UFC. If Alvarez jumps from Bellator that wil be a huge blow considering that Bellator is set to start on Spike TV television in January.

- Ben Rothwell suffered an ankle injurt this week while training and will miss next Saturday's UFC on Fox 4 show. No replacement has been made but someone is bound to take a nationally televised fight even if it is only on 10 days notice.

- UFC has gotten into a twitter flame war with none other than the Stanley Cup Champion (hockey) Los Angeles Kings. True to form, UFC normally invites members of the home sports team for shows that they run in sports arenas. Next Saturday's UFC on Fox 4 is from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Anyway, UFC sent out a tweet to the LA Kings twitter saying, "We got a VIP ticket with Lord Stanley's name on it for #UFConFOX at the Staples Center." The Kings replied (which has since been deleted) "Sorry. The cup is only for those who play a real sport." They then deleted it and replaced it with: "We may be busy parading our cup around the world." UFC, never one to be outdone replied with: "Our checking line > than your checking line." OUCH.
