T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #132

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE/RANT: A big F*CK YOU to anyone who is standing by former Penn State Football coach Joe Paterno. The man is an accessory to the rape of little kids. It is that simple. Paterno did the bare minimum to cover his ass in this scandal (AND ADMITTED SO IN HIS STATEMENT by saying, "In the benefit of hindsight, I wish I did more. " No shit bro) and because he did not report it to police, more little boys were raped by his former assistant coach. It is vile and disgusting and he should consider himself lucky that the loss of his job is all he has to deal with. He is in his 80's in age and had a 45 year career and will go down as the most successful college football coach ever. Let it be people. Don't go crying and rioting over the fact that he got fired. Little kids lost their innocence because of his negligence. Honestly, if you knew your friend raped someone and didn't tell police, you'd get in trouble for failing to report it. It is that simple, telling someone else rather than the proper authorities is not a good deal.

BONUS MATT NOTE/EDIT: As I was about to send this to James Guttman for publishing, former WCW announcer and current Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden reported on his radio show that the entire scandal at Penn State is the tip of the iceberg. Madden says that former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky (who was the guy raping little boys that Joe Paterno covered up for) was actually running a pedophile ring out of the Penn State football offices by pimping out the little boys in his football camp to rich Penn State alumni. Penn State knew about this and forced Sandusky to retire at the age of 55 in order to sweep this under the rug. While you may think this is hypothesis or some sort of rumor or falseness, Madden had actually broke the Sandusky story about 6 MONTHS AGO .

BONUS MATT NOTE PART 2: F'N GOLD .

CLUB WWI NEWS: As James Guttman broke on Twitter yesterday (@JamesGuttmanWWI), there's a new Breaking The Ice with Glacier scheduled for today featuring a special guest.  Who is it?  You'll find out. GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes:

- I really find it difficult to believe that NOT ONE PERSON in the WWE will speak up to Vince McMahon and tell him that his booking sucks. On RAW this week, John Cena was double teamed by Miz and R-Truth. He wasn't beaten up in a brutal way because Zack Ryder made the save and assisted in running off the heels. Later in the night, Miz got a flash pin on John Cena due to R-Truth holding down Cena's leg. Cena immediately kicked out at 3 and smirked as Truth and Miz walked up the ramp to exit. This was their big "Get Heat" angle leading into Survivor Series? This is what we are supposed to shell out $50 for? To see John Cena and the Rock get revenge for this? They can't get major heat on them next week because The Rock will be there and you have to cause tension between Cena and Rock. Even if you do, no one in their right mind would possibly think that Miz and Truth have a shot in hell at winning, can they? Would it have been so difficult to have Miz and Truth lay out Cena? Stretcher job and all? Have them beat on him and talk about how his partner couldn't bother to be there for him? Luckily for WWE, Survivor Series is going to do well based on the Rock and the Rock alone. If it were anyone but Rock returning, this show would do horrible.

- John Morrison beat US Champion Dolph Ziggler. Read that again. The same John Morrison, who has not won a match in like 2 months, defeated the current United States Champion in a non-title match when Ziggler is heading into a PPV title defense against Zack Ryder. Short of Morrison being added to the US title match and making it a three way, why in the world would this make sense? I do not get it. On top of that, does this mean that Morrison is no longer leaving the company when his contract expires? Is he out of the doghouse?

- Jim Ross once again did not compete the Michael Cole Challenge on RAW as he was not in England for the show. Just wondering, why did they announce it so far in advance if they didn't want to let it take place? Ross did confirm via his Twitter that he is booked to be in Boston next week for RAW.

- Finally Kevin Nash delivers. His promo on RAW was probably one of the best he has done in years and his logic behind the promo makes sense if you know Nash and his history of political games. For those who missed it, Nash noted that he made a surprise return at the Royal Rumble last year and when he came out, the reaction from fans blew the roof off. It was then he knew he needed to comeback full time. He called HHH and asked to "get the band back together". Not only did HHH not bother to even tell him NO, he got no response at all and he considered that disrespectful.

- Where is Alex Riley? Anyone?

- Slow builds. It amazes me that WWE gets it part of the time and other times completely rushes things. The build up for the return of Brodus Clay has been nothing short of AWESOME. The video packages make me legit believe that this guy is a MONSTER. He is absolutely still green in the ring but from the video packages, I cannot imagine any newer fans not thinking that this guy is going to kill people and he will absolutely get a reaction when he re-debuts, probably on Monday.

- Poor Daniel Bryan. Turn him heel please. Do something to get him wins.

- Wrestlemania sold approximately 40,000 tickets on the first day of sales to the general public. WWE made $6.2 million dollars to date on Mania tickets. The record WrestleMania gate is $6.23 million for last year's WrestleMania. WWE is estimating a $9 million or more live gate which will make this Mania the most successful Mania EVER.

- While in Miami to assist in WrestleMania promotion, Rey Mysterio told fans in attendance that he still plans on wrestling at Mania. That is a pretty lofty goal for a man who had two major knee surgeries since being out. I do not think this is going to happen and if it does, it is because he came back too soon. Medically he shouldn't be available to return until after Mania sometime.

- Sean "X-Pac" Waltman has stated that he will be hosting a "Pre-Royal Rumble party" in St. Louis the night before the Rumble PPV. Being that WWE normally has surprise entrants in the Rumble (like Kevin Nash and Booker T last year), one can think that if Waltman can be medically cleared to wrestle, he will likely be a surprise entrant this year given his friendship with HHH and his affiliation with FCW in Florida.

- Kane is expected to make his return at the Royal Rumble. He was written off television due to "injury" from Mark Henry.

- Kevin Nash actually wrestled this week in Liverpool at a WWE RAW live event. He teamed with Miz and R-Truth vs. Sheamus, John Cena and Zack Ryder.

- Both Mick Foley and Booker T had special guest referee stints during the Smackdown live event tour of Europe this week. Booker is expected to wrestle in a feud with Cody Rhodes soon on television. There was talk of holding Foley off from returning until after Survivor Series but now the plan is having him return on Monday in addition to the Rock. Foley WILL BE on the Survivor Series show.

- Christian was sent home from the WWE Europe Tour on Wednesday evening as he suffered an apparent severe ankle sprain or a broken ankle during his match with Sheamus. He is set to be examined by a doctor in the US.

- Sources are still rumbling about the health of Vince McMahon. He fatigues much faster than in the past and it is almost as if he is walking around with the flu although he has seem like that for a few weeks now. He is mostly to himself backstage during RAW tapings and is said to completely re-write the show on Monday afternoons after scripts are handed in. Smackdown, due to McMahon being drained from RAW normally just signs off on almost everything put in front of him on Tuesday.

- According to DAVE MELTZER , there is a lot of controversy involving the suspension of Evan Bourne due to a wellness violation. Bourne failed the wellness test for synthetic marijuana (Spice) which was placed on the banned list several months ago. WWE wrestlers were using the synthetic drug in order to avoid paying the $2,500 fine that comes with marijuana failures. While most seem to think that taking the $2,500 fine would be simpler, it becomes costly for lower card guys like Bourne and if you remember MVP's run in WWE where he was a mid/upper card guy, he was buried by WWE creative for multiple marijuana failures. The controversy with Bourne comes into play because Bourne smoked the drug at a party that several WWE stars attended. He was not the only person using the drug as a few main event talents were using as well yet didn't get suspended and a mid card talent who was caught during the wellness testing with Bourne was fined $2,500 for a marijuana failure yet was smoking the drug with Bourne.

- Rumored LOGO for the WWE Network. WWE is still on pace to launch the network around Wrestlemania which is a great move if they can be successful since it will allow cross promotion with the event and thus be piggybacking off of all the hype for Mania.

- Big props to WWE. As bad as they have been on the creative end, they have been angels on the personal end. WWE Hall of Famer Blackjack Mulligan stated in an interview that WWE is currently paying for the medical bills of Barry Windham who suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago. Mulligan noted that Windham is in real bad shape physically as he was found with a dislocated knee, his right foot was turned at a 45 degree angle and spun inside the femur, a broken right wrist and was unable to respond to any questions. His heart damage was minimal as the heart attack was not major but while passed out, he also suffered a stroke following the heart attack. Mulligan noted that he was able to afford Windham to be in a nursing home but WWE called and had him moved to a rehabilitation facility as he is going to need to learn how to walk again and feed himself again; a very classy move by WWE as they were under no obligation to step in and assist.

- Best of luck to former WWE Star Marc Canterbury a.k.a. Henry Godwin who was involved in a major car accident and is currently at a local hospital near his home in Kentucky. Apparently Godwin's car fell off an embankment several hundred feet. He was trapped in his car for at least an hour. His car was crushed and needed the "jaws of life" to free him. He punctured both lungs, broke at least 12 ribs, broke his left leg in THREE places, had his spleen and appendix removed as well as doctors finding a tumor that was also removed as well as other various injuries. He is in intensive care and in serious trouble. Send some prayers if you are into doing that.

- Nothing really to lose by it so if I were in charge of WWE, I would do it but independent wrestler Gregory Iron has released a video on YouTube petitioning for a spot in the Royal Rumble. Iron's story is special because he has cerebral palsy and was shown praise earlier this summer by CM Punk at an independent show because even with his cerebral palsy. He teamed with Colt Cabana and can work real well. He is a bit on the small side for WWE but isn't petitioning for a roster spot, only a spot in the Rumble. I would give it to him considering there are 40 people in the Rumble and he has a great story.

- Adult film star Joanie "Chyna" Laurer stated on the HOWARD STERN show that she wrote a letter to Vince McMahon about a possible return to WWE. I have to give her credit for having the balls to try this. It is NEVER going to happen for various reasons (mainly because she is now in the adult film industry). but at least she made an effort. Vince did in fact write her back stating that there is no animosity between the company and her however WWE creative does not have anything for her at this time. She also went into other details of her life stating that she has no money left from her wrestling days; she was paid $200,000 for her debut with Vivid; her next adult film will have a wrestling theme to it; she has not spoken to her parents in years and doesn't even know if they are still alive and the kicker is that she stated that she is open to prostitution but only at $10,000 per client.

- Paul Heyman conducts an INTERVIEW with Brock Lesnar about WWE 12. With all the talk of Steve Austin's "Final Match" being against CM Punk, Lesnar is continuing to fuel the flames of an eventual Austin/Lesnar match. Lesnar vs. Austin will be a bigger match than Punk vs. Austin from a star power perspective. FYI...it will not happen at this year's Mania should Austin/Lesnar eventually get booked.

- The Great Khali is opening a wrestling school in India. The jokes write themselves with that one. Have at it folks.

- Kelly Kelly in MAXIM .

- Former WWE Diva Shelly Martinez (Ariel) tweeted the following PICTURE and stated that they recently discussed their beef and settled their differences. Martinez was released from WWE following a big backstage blow up between her and Batista as Dave was apparently talking down to her longtime friend Melina backstage at a live event. Batista and Melina were "involved" at the time. Shelly did not like the talk and confronted Batista and both were yelling obscenities at each other.

- For everyone who is wondering about Low-Ki (Formerly known as NXT winner Kaval) has been training at Dave Batista's MMA gym in Tampa Florida and is now considering trying out MMA for a career. Harry "D.H. " Smith also trains there and has stated that he expects to have his first MMA fight in 2012.

- Episode 38 of " Z! True Long Island Story ."

- If you are tired of RAW and the poor television that has been airing of late, feel free to write to USA NETWORK directly (since WWE obviously does not care about your feedback). Please be courteous and professional in your comments and refrain from using foul language.

WWE SURVIVOR SERIES PPV is on Sunday, November 20th from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • John Cena & The Rock vs. Miz & R-Truth
  • WWE TITLE: Alberto Del Rio (c) w/Ricardo Rodriquez vs. CM Punk
  • WORLD TITLE: Mark Henry (c) vs. The Big Show
  • US TITLE: Dolph Ziggler w/Vickie Guerrero vs. Zack Ryder
  • SURVIVOR SERIES RULES: Randy Orton & Sheamus & Mason Ryan & Kofi Kingston & Sin Cara vs. Wade Barrett & Cody Rhodes & Christian & Jack Swagger & Hunico.

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes:

- Ok folks, a week boycott is all you get from TNA. Why you ask? The reason is that WWE was actually WORSE than TNA this week. Sure TNA still has horrendous promos and angles. But for the most part, they are attempting to improve. Yes they rushed through 6 months worth of angles between James Storm & Robert Roode all because they booked to stick it to the internet. The flip side of that coin however is the fact that WWE did the same thing with CM Punk. They easily wasted 6 months worth of angles with Punk. Not to stick it to the net, but because they felt it was best for business. Not exactly sure how or why they thought that, but they did. I watched the James Storm vs. Robert Roode title change and if you take away the fact that it was done WAY too soon, it was actually a well done angle following a damn good match. Had they done it after building up an angle between the two and I would have probably claimed it was the angle of the year. But instead, it happened after two weeks which was DUMB. Either way, still light years better than anything WWE is doing. Again, the only reason I am reporting on WWE stuff is because I am going to Survivor Series in two weeks so therefore I feel it is my obligation to report on it until then. But believe me, after Survivor Series, if WWE does not buck the trend of crappy shows, then they are going to get a time out too.

- A.J. Styles severely injured his ankle last weekend at a live event however as of last night, they announced him as getting a title shot at the Turning Point PPV this Sunday vs. Bobby Roode. It is questionable whether or not he will be able to compete on it as he tweeted a picture of it earlier this week and it is BAD. he was told by his doctors to take 2 to 4 weeks off. Styles has publicly stated that he is working the PPV.

- By the way, anyone else see a problem with TNA waiting for the FINAL SEGMENT of Impact yesterday to announce what the main event is for THIS SUNDAY'S PPV? That just seems like it isn't a good idea if you are trying to sell a PPV.

- As part of Jeff Hardy's probation agreement, he is not allowed to leave his home past 6:00 pm unless it is for work. He is also not allowed to have any visitors in his home past 6:00 pm so basically he is under curfew.

- TNA made an official announcement this past week that they have partnered with former WWE Developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling to have OVW be the official TNA developmental system. In recent years, TNA has unofficially used Team 3D's school in Florida as their place to send people to train but OVW will be a feeder system to TNA as it was in past years for WWE. OVW was the home/place to learn for such WWE Stars as Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Randy Orton, Dave Batista, Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas and others.

TNA TURNING POINT PPV is THIS SUNDAY from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. A.J. Styles
  • TNA KNOCKOUTS TITLE: Velvet Sky (c) vs. Gail Kim
  • TNA TAG TEAM TITLES: Mexican America (c) (Hernandez, Anarquia & Sarita) vs. Ink Inc. (Jesse Neal, Shannon Moore & Toxxin) in a six person tag with the tag team titles on the line.
  • Jeff Hardy vs. Jeff Jarrett
  • Crimson vs. Matt Morgan
  • Rob Van Dam vs. Christopher Daniels in a NO DQ match

Independent / International News and Notes:

- ROH ran an angle at the Louisville television tapings last week which has Kevin Steen returning for Final Battle 2011 on December 23rd in a match vs. Steve Corino. Jimmy Jacobs will be the special guest referee and Jim Cornette will be at ringside for the match. If it seems like the deck will be stacked against Steen, you are right. This will be a fantastic angle/match though as it will have a ton of heat to it.

- I am hearing that there is a lot of UWF behind the scenes turmoil going on. I'll keep you posted once more details become available.

- Eddie Kingston GOLDNESS .

- Tommy Dreamer TELEVISION episode 4.

MMA News and Notes:

- UFC is more lucrative than boxing? Dana White seems to think so. "From 2001-2006, we were almost $50 million in the hole. Over that time, not one fighter ever got paid late, no check bounced, no employee at Zuffa, ever. The Fertitta brothers funded this thing for that long. In 2006 we started turning a profit. From 2006-2011, I can't remember what the number is, but it's like 40-something millionaires. 40-something millionaires, 20-something multi, multimillionaires and the list goes on and on. That's from 2006-2011. Boxing's been around for 100 years. It was a mainstream sport before there was television. What we've been able to do, in that much time, is pretty phenomenal."

- George St. Pierre stated in an interview that he makes approximately $4 to $5 million per fight with UFC. WOW.

- Dana White received a mixed bag of news from the California State Athletic Commission this week when the CSAC announced that Big John McCarthy will be the referee of the UFC on FOX debut Heavyweight title fight between Cain Velasquez (c) and Junior Dos Santos. White has been at odds with McCarthy for a long time due to McCarthy leaving his UFC job to join the IFL a few years back so it has to piss him off that McCarthy is getting to share in what is likely the BIGGEST moment in MMA history to date. The flip side, Dana knows how experienced and good McCarthy is as a referee and can now count on the fact that if someone does not get knocked out in the fight, the referee will not play a part in a controversial decision as McCarthy is arguably the best referee in the sport (Herb Dean being his closest competitor for the crown).

- An amazing stat is that UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta stated that tomorrow's fight on FOX will end up costing UFC around $16,000,000.00.

- Not only is tomorrow's show significant because it will help launch UFC into mainstream sports and solidify it as something new and big but it also marks the 18th birthday of UFC as a promotion. Yes, UFC has been around for 18 years.

- It is expected that UFC on FOX will mark the highest rated/watched MMA fight in history. The current record holder is Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson which drew a 3.8 rating on Spike. The preview show for Velasquez/Dos Santo drew a 2.0 rating with little publicity.

- FYI...my opinion on the fight is that Velasquez wins. Barring anyone chickening out and doing a lot of nothing, this is also likely to be the best fight in MMA history to date. Both men are young, strong, athletic and gifted. Both have literally run through every opponent in front of them and both are known for going at their opponents rather than being tentative. Both have knockout power and if they decide to stand and trade blows, someone is getting knocked out. Neither man has lost a round in UFC.

- After a break up from his longtime management company/training camp, Alistair Overeem has signed to train with X-Treme Couture out of Las Vegas. Overeem is training for his fight with Brock Lesnar by rubbing elbows with Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin and Gray Maynard. Overeem is suing his former management team of Golden Glory claiming that they duped him into signing a poor contract that cost him hundreds of thousands in earnings.

- Dana White confirmed that contrary to what he claims, Anderson Silva will defend the middleweight title against Chael Sonnen in his next defense. No date has been given yet due to Silva still recovering from his shoulder injury but he isn't fighting anyone by Sonnen.

- Rory MacDonald is off of the December 10th UFC 140 show in Toronto with an injury. He is being replaced by Claude Patrick who was fighting on the prelims.

- UFC Undisputed 3 will be released on February 14, 2012.

- Carlos Condit will face off against Josh Koscheck on the undercard of George St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz on February 4th.

- The next season of The Ultimate Fighter is on chart to air in early 2012 on the FX network. It is set to be lightweights and welterweights. Rashad Evans has been quoted as being interested in coaching again but no coaches have been discussed by UFC yet.

- In what can be considered good news for GINA CARANO and her fans and bad news for women's MMA, Carano is getting FAVORABLE reviews for her starring role in the upcoming Steven Soderburgh film "Haywire". She plays the lead in a cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton. The movie had a special premiere earlier this week at a film festival and had very little negative comments following the showing. Carano was said to get a good review based on her fight scenes and believability and an exact quote stated that "she delivered where other actresses have attempted roles that were more toned or buff and ended up looking like pretenders." The film was basically a launching pad by Sodenbergh for Carano.

- Boxing promoter Don King stated last week that he is looking into starting his own MMA promotion. While I do not think that anyone will be able to compete with UFC since they have basically cornered the market on MMA as a main stream sport, I do believe that with the correct finances, King might be able to make a minor dent/ripple in the MMA world with the right promotion.

- Bobby Lashley returned to the cage tonight in Lubbock Texas to attempt to become the Shark Fights heavyweight Champion when he faces off with Karl Knothe. Knothe is currently on a 12 fight win streak dating back to 2007 however he has not fought in over a year. That long of a layoff and taking a fight on 3 days notice, not a good idea.

UFC on FOX DEBUTS TOMORROW NIGHT from Anaheim California and the line-up is as follows:

  • Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kinsbury
  • Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story

  • Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir

  • Claude Patrick vs. Brian Ebersole
  • Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung (The Korean Zombie)

STRIKEFORCE 37 is on December 17th from San Diego California and the line-up is as follows:

  • WOMEN'S FEATHWEIGHT TITLE: Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (c) vs. Hiroko Yamanaka
  • Gegard Mousasi vs. Ovince St. Preux

UFC 141 is on December 30th from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
  • Johny Hendricks vs. Jon Fitch
  • Dong Hyun Kim vs. Sean Pierson

UFC 142 is on January 14, 2012 from Rio de Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

- R.I.P. to HEAVY D who stopped being heavy a few years ago and got slim. He passed away this week at age 44. No official cause of death has been given other than foul play was not considered and it is due to a medical issue. Friends say that he had come home from shopping and was struggling with breath walking up the stairs. His manager sat with him while an ambulance was called. He was conscious when the ambulance arrived stating he was having trouble breathing. He died at the hospital. A source close to him states that he was suffering from a bout with pneumonia. Sadly he was no longer slim as the coronoer said he weighed 344 pounds at the time of his death.

- Oscar producer Brett Ratner resigned from producing the Oscars this year because he made a comment stating that "Rehearsal is for fags" and it offended homosexuals everywhere even though he did not mean it literally. Penn State football coach Joe Paterno offered to step down at the END OF THE FOOTBALL SEASON for covering up the fact that one of his assistant coaches were raping little boys repeatedly for several years. What is wrong with this picture? Ratner immediately steps down for a stupid quote (which also caused his friend and Oscar Host Eddie Murphy to quit in protest of Ratner stepping down) yet Paterno literally commits a crime and people were ok with him not stepping down immediately?

- The Joe Paterno scandal has apparently also got Ashton Kutcher too. Ashton is RETIRING from Twitter (he is now letting his management handle his tweets) because he did not find out the facts before he tweeted. He tweeted the FOLLOWING on Wednesday night and got hammered by his followers over it.

- Not really understanding the mindset of people who refuse to watch Sons of Anarchy. It is the best television show on TV today. BY FAR. Nothing comes close.
