T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs... PPV's Forgotten Legacy, WWE's Latest "IT"s, Turning Point's a High Point, Angle and Wolfe Tear The House Down, Lesnar's Hole, Tila Tequila's Nuts, and More

By Matt Dawgs Nov 20, 2009 - 10:55 AM

Matt Dawgs Presents: Thank Goodness It’s Friday!!!!!

Hello all. Welcome back and Happy Friday. Let’s just get right to it. In my previous column on this site titled “Matt Dawgs’ Random Thoughts, Opinions, Questions and Observations”, I wrote exactly what the title says I wrote. While this column will definitely hit you with that from time to time, I am also going just basically switch up the formula a bit with my random thoughts from each wrestling PROMOTION this week. Of course I will also throw in some thoughts on real world news, sports, entertainment and gossip. Please feel free to provide any thoughts or feedback on the new format. Enjoy.

1) WWE News and Notes

- Rowdy Roddy Piper is a perfect example of why a wrestling fan or former wrestler is the best suited guest host for RAW. Piper delivered on the mic and was involved in both quality angles on the show (the verbal joust with Vince McMahon & the Randy Orton/Kofi Kingston brawl.)

- Speaking of Orton/Kingston, that was a damn good angle. Of course, minus the beginning where Orton had to pull back on the punt of Piper and then wait for Kingston to run in. The shoulder shrug to the hard camera was PRICELESS!!!

- This is a good transition to my next point. With Survivor Series on Sunday, how in the hell do you leave both Rhodes and DiBiase off of the go home show? WTF?

- Next week’s RAW guest host is none other than former Governor of Minnesota, Jesse the Body Ventura. It is also a 3 hour show. That can’t make the writing team happy to have to work on consecutive 3 hours shows.

- WWE has announced the guests for the next 4-weeks. Ventura next week, followed by Verne Troyer aka Mini Me (UGH!!!!), followed by Dallas Mavericks owner Billionaire Mark Cuban followed by Dennis Miller hosting the 3-hour Slammy Award’s show. (UGH!!!!).

- MISSING: Carlito Colon . Anyone know where he is?

- MSG continues to be the “BE ALL, END ALL” of arenas for wrestling. The crowd was red hot all night for everything. Even Hornswoggle. If you listen closely, most of the crowd was booing when HHH was about to pedigree him.

- According to a Senate filing, Linda McMahon and her husband Vince McMahon own approximately $355.13 million worth of stocks, bank accounts and other holdings. WOW.

- Kaval (aka Low-Ki) is back in action in FCW. He defeated Eric Escobar at the last taping.

- I know I said last week that they are leaning towards Undertaker vs. Jericho for Mania but due to what happened on Monday’s Raw with Taker tombstoning Cena, I fully believe that they are going to go for Taker/Cena at Mania.

- Edge will not be back in time for Mania. Not a fact, just a prediction.

- Mayrese should be back in the next few weeks on RAW.

- I’ve said it before and I will say it again, if you get on Vince’s bad side then you are there for a long time. Apparently Stacy Kiebler had her agents contact WWE about a possible guest hosting spot. WWE didn’t even bother to say no to her. Instead, they just didn’t return her call.

- Add Axl Rotten to the list of names of former WWE employees who have taken WWE up on their offer to pay for rehab.

- Dave Meltzer  has confirmed that Perry Saturn is alive and well. He is living in Minnesota and was recently remarried.

- WWE has re-signed with the USA Network through 2014. With the new deal, there are rumors that NBC Universal is considering providing WWE with their own cable network (speculated to take over the “Universal HD” channel) but talks are only in the preliminary stage.

- Sheamus has “IT”. Problem is, when someone has “IT”, WWE has a tendency to BEAT IT OUT OF THEM both physically and emotionally until they lose “IT”. Just ask MVP. Luckily Sheamus trains in the gym with HHH so that is a plus.

- Drew McIntyre also has “IT”. See above comment about Sheamus though.

- The MSG video package was awesome. WWE has really had some great moments at the Garden.

- CM Punk delivers one of his classic “Straight Edge” promo’s tonight on Smackdown.

- Great Khali was suspended………..from his job at the Punjabi Police Department. He was a cop in India, yes. He had requested and been granted leave for 5 years but those 5 years have expired and he didn’t request a new leave. He didn’t report back to work so they suspended him. What will he do now? LOL.

- Rey Mysterio is working on a VERY BAD knee. His knee apparently has no cartilage in it. It is bone rubbing against bone. He needs another surgery (not sure if this is upwards of 15 yet but I think it is) and it will keep him sidelined for at least 6 months. He definitely wants to gut it out due to him enjoying his current program with Batista. If you see WWE film an injury angle (either at Survivor Series or after) then this is why.

- The Pontiac Silverdome, home of Wrestlemania III (where according to Hulk Hogan, 1,000,000 people were in attendance for) is being sold for $500,000 dollars. Yes, that is FIVE-HUNDRED THOUSAND. One year ago, Detroit almost got $20 million for the building. WOW.

- Jim Ross is out until 2010 sometime. His contract is up in December. 2 + 2 = ??

2) WWE Survivor Series PPV Line up for November 22, 2009

  • - WWE TITLE: John Cena © vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels
  • - WORLD TITLE: Undertaker © vs. Chris Jericho vs. Big Show
  • - Batista vs., Rey Mysterio
  • - TRADITIONAL SS MATCH: Kofi Kingston/MVP/Mark Henry/R-Truth/Christian vs. Randy Orton/Cody Rhodes/Ted DiBiase/ CM Punk/William Regal
  • - TRADITIONAL SS MATCH: John Morrison/Matt Hardy/Evan Bourne/Shelton Benjamin/Finlay vs. Miz/Drew McIntyre/Sheamus/Dolph Ziggler/Jack Swagger
  • - TRADITIONAL SS MATCH: Mickie James/Melina/Eve Torres/Kelly Kelly/Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool/Jillian Hall/Beth Phoenix/Layla/Alicia Fox

3) TNA News and Notes

- TNA hosted their annual Turning Point PPV this week which shows why when focused, TNA has the potential to be the best wrestling company in the World. They presented a top to bottom, damn good wrestling show. In ring, they blew every single WWE PPV in 2009 out of the water. From the opening match (Homicide vs. Amazing Red) all the way to the main event (AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels vs. Samoa Joe), everyone delivered.

- AJ vs. Daniels vs. Joe was on level with their 2005 match of the year PPV main event. What is even more impressive is that all three men have considerablt toned down their style since that match and still delivered a quality, 4+ star match.

- Once again, Kurt Angle proved that he is by far the best technical wrestler to ever lace wrestling boots. He and Desmond Wolfe tore the house down (even though the crowd was kind of luke warm to several near falls due to not knowing Desmond’s signature moves/finishers). Even more amazing about the match however is the untold story. Literally 2 minutes into the match, Kurt Angle pulled a muscle in his back. It was completely un-noticeable as Angle still stepped it up and delivered in the ring.

- Surprisingly (and possibly a sign that Bobby Lashley is leaving TNA to join Strikeforce) is that Scott Steiner pinned Lashley relatively clean. Prior to the match, it was announced that it would be no DQ. After beating the crap out of each other with nothing but stiff shots and sick looking suplexes, Steiner finished him off with a shot from a metal pipe. Steiner worked hard in the match proving that he wants to remain in TNA.

- To be fair, since I normally bash TNA to shreds each week, I therefore cannot skip the piss poor logic and booking holes. For some reason, Kevin Nash is now aligned with Eric Young. Just three weeks ago, prior to his suspension, Nash was booked to face Young in a Global Title (formerly Legend’s Title) match at this very PPV because Young ended up screwing Nash out of $20,000. After basically feuding with Nash for a month, Nash at this PPV ended up coming to Young’s aid and joining him. No explanation given. WTF?

- Can anyone explain to me why Awesome Kong and Tara wrestled in a cage? Isn’t a cage match usually a blow-off to a feud?

- Does anyone think that Rob Van Dam will really wrestle here? I know that there has been a ton of talk about it, but seriously, come on now. Rob has always been a business man first which is why he tolerated WWE for so long. He is about getting PAID and TNA just can’t really pay him what he is worth. I would love some AJ/RVD, Joe/RVD matches but realistically, WWE is his best bet.

- All but guaranteed that Hulk Hogan will not be debuting until January 4th.

- By the way, according to Dave Meltzer, all this Hogan talk of running the company are nothing but mistruths. He isn’t in charge. He has A LOT of input but Dixie Carter is the be all/end all of decision making.

- And Dixie is going to become an on-air character involved in the Hogan angle.

- He is also trying to convince Dixie Carter to sign Sid. Yes, THIS Sid. A 49 year old man who hasn’t wrestled consistently in almost a decade and wasn’t that good of a wrestler to begin with. This is the new TNA folks. Love it.

- Chris Sabin re-tweaked his neck this week at iMpact and is going to be taking a few weeks off to recover.

- Jethro Holiday (formerly Trevor Murdoch) is no longer with the company.

- I think I’m developing a crush on Alyssa Flash (Cheerleader Melissa). She is a damn cutie.

- They are building to an AJ Styles vs. Daniels main event for the next pay per view. A shame that all these quality matches are going to go down the sh*tter when Hogan comes in.

- Konnan is writing an auto-biography. Should be some good TNA stories in there as well as WCW stories. The majority of it will probably cover Mexico and WCW though. I doubt he has any major WWE stories though.

- Mick Foley was a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart this week.

- Midway Games has finally sold the rights to the TNA video game which is a good thing. The bad thing is that the company that purchased the rights is not exactly a “who’s who” of video game companies. That being said, between the sale and development of a new game, it’ll be 2 years at best before the new game can be released. That’s a long time in TNA’s lifespan years.

4) Ring of Honor News and Notes

- Congrats to both the Briscoe Brothers and former ROH backstage announcer Becky Bayless for both receiving WWE tryouts this week. The Briscoe’s at Smackdown in Philly and Becky at MSG in New York. WWE continues to look for quality talent. The Briscoes had a pre-show tryout and were invited back for a second look which is a good sign for them. What is not a good sign however is the fact that they are going to have to dramatically change their style. More-so than probably anyone in the history of developmental since all they do is high spot after high spot and drop people on their heads. Their style is not WWE-friendly.

- This past week, ROH TV aired Bryan Danielson’s final match along with a brief career retrospective. This coming Monday, ROH airs Nigel McGuiness’ final match as well. Good two episodes of ROH on HD Net.

- The main events for Final Battle 2009 have been announced with Austin Aries defending (and more than likely losing) the ROH World Title against Tyler Black as well as the American Wolves of Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards defending (and probably losing) the ROH Tag Team Titles against the Briscoe Brothers.

- Kevin Steen is playing with fire. His knee is in REAL BAD shape and doctors have been advising him to take off and get surgery but he has been continuing to work through his injuries. As I have stated in the past, I completely understand why wrestlers do it even if I don’t agree. On the flip side, Kevin Steen isn’t Bryan Danielson or Nigel McGuiness. He isn’t going on with the hope that he is going to make WWE or TNA someday. Steen will not make either promotion. Is his future way of life worth the risk? Will he be able to play catch with his son in 20 years if he continues on? He isn’t going to ever make “superstar” money in wrestling. How is it worth it?

- I like the idea of the Pick Six angle that they are running. For the unfamiliar, Jim Cornette has decided to officially name the top 6 contenders to the ROH Title. Only those 6 can ever get a title shot. Should someone beat one of the top 6, they take that person’s spot and the person who lost is removed. The current order of the top 6 is: Kevin Steen, Chris Hero, Roderick Strong, Tyler Black, Kenny Omega and Colt Cabana.

- Still wondering why Sara Del Rey hasn’t been signed by one of the “big two”. Especially here since she would fit in awesomely.

- Eddie Edwards is back wrestling. Broken elbow and all. He is NOT 100%. Jesus, these guys don’t learn.

- Kenta will not be back in action until the fall at the earliest.

- Added to Gabe Sapolsky’s “EVOLVE” promotion are Ricochet, Bobby Fish and TJ Perkins. Maybe I’m out of touch but who are these people?

5) MMA News and Notes

- Brock Lesnar was basically on death’s door. According to Sherdog.net, Brock has been fighting for OVER A YEAR with a hole in his intestines. Some of his intestines were leaking into his stomach which is what caused all the recent pain and high fevers. He had minor surgery earlier this week but it is too soon know whether or not he requires more surgery. Either way, he is in definitely in bad shape and according to Dana White, his career is definitely in jeopardy. Keep him in your prayers.

- BTW, to put that in better perspective for all of you Brock haters, he fought both Frank Mir and Randy Couture at less than 100%!!!!!!!!

- In regards to the Heavyweight Title, Dana White is negotiating an interim title match between Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin to possibly take place in February. Nothing is final as Dana has just reached out to both men to see if they can do it.

- Speaking of Shane’s, Shane McMahon met with Dana White last week. Dana did confirm he met with McMahon but did not divulge any details. My assumption is that Shane will join the company in 2010.

- Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman is all but signed for UFC 109. I don’t think you can possibly sign a main event with people older than them. LOL.

- Couture is keeping busy as he is about to compete in his fourth match in the last 12 months. That is a match each quarter. He recently defeated Brandon Vera in a controversial decision at UFC 105 in England. While I think Couture did win the fight, I can definitely understand why some people were upset with the outcome. Couture, while in some positions that could have cost him in the end, did dictate the fight and forced Vera to fight his style. That counts in the judges eyes.

- Doesn’t look like the Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson match will take place anytime soon, if ever. Dana White basically said that he and Jackson were enemies now and if past history dictates, once you’re White’s enemy, you’re his enemy for a long time. So I fully expect White to probably sue Jackson for breach of contract or something. Sad but true.

- The next season of TUF starts filming in January with the rumored coaches to be Renzo Gracie and Matt Hughes which will lead to a March fight between the two.

- In boxing news, just like I said, Manny Pacquiao completely embarrassed Miguel Cotto last week in a PPV fight that is rumored to be have drawn over 1.5 MILLION buys. If this is indeed the case, I fully expect a Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather to surpass the 2.4 million that Mayweather/De La Hoya drew which will make it the highest drawing boxing PPV EVER.

-

  • - Luiz Cane vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
  • - Karo Parisvan vs. Dustin Hazelett

UFC 107 is on December 12, 2009 from Memphis Tennessee and the line-up is as follows:

  • - Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo
  • - Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce

6) Random Thoughts, Links, Pics, Plugs, ETC.

- Random PIC of the week: The new and improved Amy Winehouse.

- Tila Tequila is F’N nuts. Don’t believe me? Click HERE and HERE . (WARNING: Listening to Tequila may cause your brain harm)

- I heard there is some sort of new Vampire movie coming out this week. Anyone else heard anything about it?

- One of my former independent wrestling promoters, Frank Goodman is coming back to promoting in Florida. His first show is December 5th in Orlando Florida featuring Balls Mahoney, Jerry Lynn, Too Cold Scorpio, Axl Rotten, The Boogeyman, Shane Douglas, Big Vito and more. Check out details on how to get tickets and to see more names scheduled to appear, check out the Pro Wrestling Uncensored  website.

- Gotta love America’s judicial system. Former NBA All Star Jayson Williams (formerly of the NJ Nets) shot and killed a man in 2002 at his house. He was playing with a shotgun (while drunk I might add) and threatened to shoot the man. The man basically no sold Williams so Williams shot him in the chest killing him instantly. Well he is accepting a plea deal that will send him to prison for a minimum of 18 months. So 8-years later and the victim’s family finally get justice. Although only 18 months for a man’s life isn’t really a fair trade if you ask me. At least it didn’t happen in Los Angeles where Williams celebrity status not only would have probably gotten him acquitted, but would have probably ended up with the victim’s family getting prison time instead.

- This past week’s episode of Sons of Anarchy was by far the best hour of television all year on ANY STATION!!! Jesus H. Christ was it intense and had me at the edge of my seat for 60 full minutes. If you’re not watching this show then you don’t deserve to own a television. SERIOUSLY!!!!

- Please support ACE Pro Wrestling . ACE Pro Wrestling is formerly the AWA-NJ promotion, which I last worked for back in 2005. ACE is a solid place for young, up and comers to get their feet wet in the business and mix with a good group of hard working individuals and veterans. They can use your support. Buy their tapes; go to their shows if you are in the NY/NJ/PA area. Just show some support. Steve Corino is the newly crowned World Heavyweight Champion.

- Lorenzo Von Matterhorn = FUNNIEST. TV CHARACTER. EVER. He is simply AWESOME.

- Christina Aguilera is DEFINITELY not wearing a BRA .

- A lot of stuff happening over at CLUB WWI. We had Marty “The Boogeyman” Wright in his first ever shoot since being released by WWE. We have had Bull Buchanan return with his Bullpen and we also have Eric Watts “Megawatts’” show on the way. If you haven’t done so by now, do yourself a favor and Join CLUBWWI.COM right TODAY!!!!

- “Big shout out to my friend and a very good DJ, DJ UCH. Check out his site and show some support by visiting him at DJUCH.com . He also just produced his first dance single that is getting radio play on Dance Stations across the country. The title of the song is “Stranger from the Sky”, check it out HERE .

- Finally, we close out with my wife. She has started her own business creating diaper cakes, which are a very original and cost efficient baby shower gift. Please take a second to visit her website: NY Diaper Cakes

Ok kiddies, classes are over for now. See you soon!!!!!!!!!

Feel free to discuss whatever you’d like in the “Anger Management” section of the message board or whichever section you see fit.
