T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: Live Thoughts From Survivor Series, The Shaman of Impact, It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Jericho, MIA Brodus Clay, and More

By Matt Dawgs Nov 25, 2011 - 7:00 AM print

T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #134

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

MATT NOTE: Only because I love you guys are you getting this. I will provide you with a short, abridged Black Friday version of my column. Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving/Black Friday.

WWE News and Notes

- Survivor Series LIVE THOUGHTS:

  • I've said it before but the Rock is far and away the best performer in WWE today and probably all time. He is above and beyond better than ANYONE on the current roster and it is embarrassing to see him perform since he is so much better than everyone else.
  • So CM Punk wins the WWE title even though he has not won on a PPV since Summerslam? Really?
  • Miz & R-Truth = KILLED DEAD. Entire feud they were made to look completely inferior to Rock and Cena. Not even close to main event level. How do you rebuild them?
  • Truth is underrated on the mic. The pigeon promo was GOLD.
  • So it looks like John Morrison is done. Nice knowing you JoMo. He is scheduled to work houseshows this week and possibly RAW on Monday being his final appeaerance. Doubt we will see you back anytime soon after that. Still cannot fathom for the life of me why you made that t-shirt though. UGH. Jomosapiens?
  • Why in the world would they add Dolph Ziggler to the elimination match if they were planning on eliminating him in 30 seconds? All that did was demonstrating for the fans “Hey, lookie here. You’re getting behind this guy as US Champ but he is not a main event level guy. HAHA.” Seriously, if you weren’t planning on using him for a long period before eliminating him then you could have put someone else in the match.
  • It is about time they got behind Wade Barrett again. He has the infamous “IT” factor and can contribute as a top level heel. He and Cody Rhodes have a bright future.
  • Crossroads on Mason Ryan for the clean elimination by Cody Rhodes?!?!?! WOW. Did not see that happening at all. Is someone down on Ryan now?
  • Zack Ryder is OVER. Fans love him. Absolutely love him.
  • Bravo to Eve Torres for taking the “Glam Slam” off the second rope.
  • Big Show vs. Mark Henry was a stinker but that top rope elbow by show was impressive. Dangerous considering he is 450+ pounds and hasn’t jumped off the top in years so he could have ended up hurting his hip, back, etc but impressive. Too bad it was a transitional spot because that should have been an injury angle or the finish of the match. Instead, it was wasted since Henry kicked out and then got immediately disqualified. That was a Wrestlemania like spot. Should have been saved for a big PPV/memorable angle.
  • How much of a flop is Sin Cara? Honestly, if he wasn’t an HHH project, he would have been gone a long time ago. The latest is that he suffered a torn patella tendon and will be out of action for 6-8 months thus missing WrestleMania. Vince McMahon has to be LIVID right now. He was planning on going for the worlds record for largest masked assembly EVER which the current record is something like 25,000 people in Lucha masks for a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball game. Since Mania is expected to have 60,000 people, they would have blown that record out but with both Mysterio and Sin Cara out of action for this years Mania, it is unlikely to be done now.
  • Side note on Cara: WWE was seriously going to get behind him due to the merchandise he moves. They have already commissioned 10 new pieces of merchandise that was set to be released this month. OUCH.
  • For the record, Cara tore his knee planting his foot for the dive, not on the dive itself. That is why it was botched. It tore before he jumped.
  • Mick Foley was backstage at the show but was not used. Also backstage was former WWE Diva Maryse who travelled to the show with boyfriend The Miz.
  • If anyone wondered, the lady in the front row who John Cena gave his shirt to was Betty Skaaland, wife of WWE Hall of Famer, the late Arnold Skaaland.
  • The Rock’s mother was also in attendance sitting in the front row.

MINI MATT RANT: I am a CM Punk fan. Odds are that I was a CM Punk fan BEFORE most of you readers even heard of CM Punk. I would put that number at 90%. Hell, with the exception of maybe fellow WWI Columnist Zah, of the 10% of you who were CM Punk fans before his WWE run, I was probably a fan before you were. That being said, Punk has won approximately TWO PPV matches since May 2011. He has had one of the most botched pushes in all of WWE history. Why should his latest title reign mean anything to anyone? Did you know that the WWE title has changed hands 9 TIMES since May? That is approximately 1 title change every 3 ½ weeks. The title is worthless. It has been damaged beyond repair. Speaking of damaged beyond repair, how about that Alberto Del Rio? The man was penciled in to be the next big star. They booked his title win to take place at last years Royal Rumble then decided against it. Then they were going to go with the win at Elimination Chamber before deciding to save it for Mania. Then they held off and decided to wait until Summerslam. Only to decide to have him cash in MITB only to lose the title clean to John Cena one month later only to win it back a few weeks later only to lose it to Punk clean one month later. WHAT. THE. F*CK??? Horrible booking. HORRIBLE!!!! END OF RANT.

- RAW was definitely an improvement over past week's episodes. There were some real good matches and promos. Of course you had some crap mixed in but it was definitely less crap than usual.

- The opening CM Punk promo was well done. I just hope they don’t go ahead with a Punk/Laurinaitis program. Tired of babyfaces against heel authority figures.

- FYI…The Cliff that Punk referred to who wanted to grow up being Teen Wolf was a reference to former WWE Star Cliff Compton (Domino). Compton is a close friend of Punk and has been tearing it up on the independent scene of late. There has been talk from both WWE and TNA on signing him.

- Really no point in having Jerry Lawler sit at ringside with laryngitis when he could barely speak.

- As mentioned a few weeks ago, Booker T is going to work a program with Cody Rhodes and Monday was the first step in that direction. Booker T has stated that this is likely his last run as a wrestler.

- Anyone know where actor Jonah Hill was? Wasn’t he penciled in to be the special guest?

- Speaking of missing, where was Brodus Clay? John Laurinaitis went out of his way to make sure he wasn’t over shadowed by the Rock last week and now he doesn’t bother to show up for his debut? That is just rude.

- Anyone else notice that Cody Rhodes lost his mask but now has knee pads? Interesting tradeoff.

- Dolph Ziggler is AWESOME. His match with CM Punk was PPV quality and both men are absolutely the future of the company. Hopefully WWE realizes this and finally gives Ziggler the push he deserves.

-Miz and R-Truth definitely broken up too early. I understand WHY it was done. Here is a hint, see the below comment on Evan Bourne’s suspension.

- “ IT BEGINS ” is going to lead people to believe that it is The Undertaker. I do not think so. I believe it to be Chris Jericho who is thinking outside the box and get people guessing. If you listen carefully, the video says that the date is 1/2/12. Do the math. Year 2012, 2nd day of January = Y2J!!!

- Obviously the other video that aired was for the return of Kane.

- Smackdown is LIVE next Tuesday and will feature special guest host Mick Foley.

- Remember when Evan Bourne got suspended for violating the Wellness Policy for smoking synthetic marijuana called Spice yet everyone was up in arms over the fact that someone else who smoked it with him was fined $2,500 for failing a marijuana test rather than suspended? Well it so happens that the other person was in fact R-Truth. Truth was SUSPENDED on Tuesday for 30 days for violating the WWE Wellness policy. WWE did not want to suspend him due to his involvement in the Survivor Series main event.

- Not sure if he is just working his own angle or serious but CM Punk has been VERY negative of the Rock in interviews lately. Not just Rock coming in and taking paydays and what not but saying that the Rock has not been "one of the boys" and is anti-social when backstage including not mingling with others.

- Props to former WWE Diva Maryse who announced that she is starting her own fashion & accessory line due out in stores next summer. It is called House of Maryse and you can find more details on her new WEBSITE .

- WWE 12 the video game has become the most pre-ordered WWE game EVER.

- Zack Ryder after his Survivor Series APPEARANCE .

- FYI folks, even though he is getting over on his own and WWE is about to push him, Zack Ryder now has HEAT on him from management due to dying his hair without permission. Ryder as you noticed has a blond type color however all merchandise they prepared for him is BROWN. While normally I would be all over WWE, I agree with them on this one. Drastic changes to your look should be approved beforehand.

- "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is doing a movie with Steven Segal.

- Goldust is lobbying for a match at Wrestlemania vs. Cody Rhodes where he would put his career on the line.

- Apparently the Undertaker's Wrestlemania match has already been booked. No word on who his opponent is but it is locked.

- Former Miss USA and Tough Enough competitor Rima Fakih is in talks with WWE about coming in. Likely to do some sort of project with/for the WWE Network.

-The Rock’s promo AFTER Survivor Series went off the air.

- The December 11th RAW from Virginia will be the “Slammy Awards”.

- The Ultimate Warrior is getting his own REALITY SHOW .

- Episode 40 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

- TNA is interested in John Morrison and is expected to make a run for him and Melina as a duo once he is free to join. The plan is to feud him with Austin Aries and center the X-Division around him. While I know with a bit more freedom and a feud with Aries will be good, he will absolutely be WASTED in TNA more so than he was in WWE.

- I know I said I wouldn’t report about “him” anymore but Matt Hardy is BACK in jail currently being held on $1,000,000 bond due to being kicked out of his WWE sponsored rehab program for failing a test. He is in violation of his probation and will likely serve significant jail time. At least a year once he is tried on 4 separate counts of drug & alcohol related incidents.

- A Thanksgiving Thong match? Really? Then no thongs are shown? WTF?

- Apparently Jesse Neal and TNA reached some sort of compromise as he has not been officially released. The deal with him is that TNA wanted him to go train full time in Louisville but he said no. Turns out he said no not because he felt he didn't need the training but because he and his girlfriend are in financial trouble (as stated previously with them getting approved for food stamps) and wouldn't be able to relocate due to moving costs, etc.

- Jeff Hardy is being protected due to a back injury hence why his match at Turning Point vs. Jarrett was so short and he was limited in what he did.

- Best of luck to TNA employee Bob Ryder who was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine. Ryder handles the day to day travel as well as independent bookings for TNA.

- TNA has once again sent out feelers to Dave Batista about coming in. They are using his longtime friend and mentor Ric Flair as a selling point. Batista however has stated many times that he has no interest in coming back to wrestling as he is happy doing his MMA training and if he were to come back to wrestling, it would be to WWE.

Independent / International News and Notes:

- R.I.P. to former ROH Wrestler Bison Smith who passed away this week at the age of 38. Best wishes to his family as he left behind a wife and children.

- Maria Kanellis was backstage at ROH last weekend in Chicago. She lives in the city and is currently dating ROH’s “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett.

- Congrats to Michael Elgin who won the annual “Survival of the Fittest” Tournament.

- The Young Bucks are close to signing a longtime contract with Sinclair Broadcasting.

- Former ECW ring announcer and manager, "Judge" Jeff Jones is now in charge of the promotion's "social media". This job was previously run by Dave Lagana before he signed with TNA.

- WSU had a successful iPPV last weekend with Melina competing in her first match since being released by WWE defeating Lexus in a good match. The show also featured the first ever woman’s WAR GAMES match which was fantastic. WSU is really on a roll and contrary to what a lot of people say out there, I feel this product is better than Shimmer when it comes to roster, match quality, etc. Production still needs work though.

- WSU also announced the latest class to be inducted into their annual Hall of Fame. The late Georgiann Makropoulos, Jana, Cindy Rogers and TNA President Dixie Carter. I know Sean McCaffrey personally and I’d be shocked to see Carter showing up to the event. He hates her. LOL.

- Episode 6 of “ TOMMY DREAMER TV

MMA News and Notes

- WAR . That is exactly what Dan Henderson & Mauricio “Shogun” Rua went to last weekend. By all accounts, this was the fight of the year and probably the best UFC fight of the past 5 years. Henderson won a controversial decision as all three judges gave the final round to Rua with a score of 10-9 when, unless you were blind, should have been a 10-8 round thus would have made the fight a draw. I fully expect to see Rua’s camp request a rematch since he felt he didn’t lose.

- Ryan Bader survived being cut from UFC in incredible fashion by knocking Jason Brilz into oblivion. Bader was coming off of two consecutive losses; one to Jon Jones which was expected and one completely shocking loss to Tito Ortiz via submission. So a third loss would have absolutely put him on the chopping block.

- Cung Le’s UFC debut did not go as expected. The fight was booked to be a showcase for Le in order to get one big money fight out of him. Wanderlei Silva had other ideas. He laid waste to Le winning by TKO. Dana White claimed earlier this week that he is not sure whether or not Le will return to UFC following his loss. So it could be a case of one and done for Le. If so, it was still a nice run for Le as he ended up being the highest paid fighter on the card earning an estimated $350,000 in the loss.

- UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos has been throwing around the idea of trying out for the Olympic Boxing team for Brazil. This is a DISASTER ON MANY LEVELS. Mainly because Dana White will look like a monster for not letting him compete for his country but the flip side is that it will keep him away from UFC for a while during his training and next summer Olympics. Plus, if he loses, it puts a damper on his aura.

- OUCH !!! Strikeforce’s Ronda Rousey dislocating elbows last weekend. Rousey is the next big thing in Women’s MMA. Here is the VIDEO of the fight. OUCH again.

- UFC President Dana White announced last weekend that the next UFC on FOX (titled UFC on FOX 2) is scheduled to air on January 28th from Chicago Illinois. The special will NOT feature any title fights and will probably have about 4 fights overall airing. It is rumored to air for 2 and a half hours. The main event has been announced as Chael Sonnen will fight Mark Munoz. This is a big deal because a loss by Sonnen will certainly remove him from his upcoming Middleweight title shot vs. Anderson Silva. Dana White did confirm that whenever Anderson Silva fights again, it will be vs. Sonnen. He is also now open to it taking place in Brazil which is just crazy.

- The first UFC on FX show will air on January 20th , one week before the second Fox show.

- UFC is going ahead with a TUF series from Brazil.

- Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was apparently not fighting in Japan and he was not happy about it. He had personally requested that he get booked on the card due to not fighting there in years. He was a big star in Japan due to his Pride days. When finding out about not being booked after originally requesting it when the show was announced, Jackson took to Twitter to complain. When he did complain, he ended up being booked vs. Ryan Bader. So that fight is set.

- Gray Maynard has left his longtime camp of Xtreme Couture and is now training with the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). Maynard was one of the founders of Xtreme Couture.

- Fedor Emelianenko won his MMA return in Russia for M-1 Global in UNIMPRESSIVE fashion. He defeated former UFC Heavyweight Jeff Monson by decision.

- One of the BEST FIGHTS you have not seen. From Bellator.
