T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #135

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: James Guttman is ringing in December with an all new "Breaking The Ice" hosted by Ray "Glacier" Lloyd - set for today.  If you haven't're crazy!  GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes

- RAW was a strong episode that heavily pushed the TLC PPV on December 18th. LOL just kidding. While a good episode, they didn’t even mention the TLC PPV nor began hyping any matches for it. Then when the buy rates come in (Vengeance drew a measly 70,000 domestic buys while Hell in a Cell drew a measly 93,000 domestic buys) they panic and change titles and give away PPV caliber matches with no build to try and boost sagging ratings and buy rates. Amazing.

- Anyone know what the hell Rowdy Roddy Piper was talking about during Piper’s Pit? John Cena has to be honest to the fans about his feelings in order to win? WTF? It seems like Cena even had no clue what he was talking about. Thankfully Cole of all people saved the segment by insinuating that John Cena’s will is unbreakable which teases that eventually he is going to snap and turn heel. My bet? WWE gets cold feet and doesn’t turn him. But the seeds were planted on Monday.

- Bye Jomosapiens. John Morrison was written off WWE television at the hands of the Miz. I enjoyed the beat down/injury angle but really? Miz? I find Miz as ZERO threat to anyone since he has been booked so poorly for so long. Also, on another note, if Vince McMahon knew he was going to suspend R-Truth and push Miz as a top heel, why did he have Miz take the pinfall from the Rock at Survivor Series? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to have Truth take the pin? By having Truth lose, you give Miz one more thing for him to b*tch about?

- In an awesome turn of events, there is a VIDEO on of John Laurinaitis stating that he wishes John Morrison well in his future endeavors. The gist of his comments are: "I truly wish you the best," he said. "Your contract was coming up in the next couple weeks anyway, and, looking at your win/loss record, I really wasn't going to sign you anyway. That being said, it's kind of a win/win for WWE and John Morrison. I hope you take some time to get your mind and body in order. Get well soon."

- I am convinced that Brodus Clay is a figment of my imagination and is not a real person. Seriously, just debut him already. I am also still NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY THE F*CK CLAY IS NEVER THERE WHEN HE IS SCHEDULED TO DEBUT!!!! Listen, if I get a new job, you can bet your ass I am going to be at the job on my first day at least a half hour before I am set to start. Not be at home 45 minutes AFTER I was supposed to start. Why is Clay never on time? He should be in the locker room in his gear ready to go. WTF!!!

- Mick Foley can still be awesome when he wants to be.

- Daniel Bryan heel turn, coming soon. I see it. Flip side, Mark Henry face turn? I don’t dig it. I understand that it should eventually be done but it is way too soon for it. So what if he gets cheers, big deal. Keep him heel. He is hitting his stride.

- I like the Wade Barrett push. I’m just hoping that Randy Orton doesn’t kill him dead in the feud and bury him. Barrett has a ton of potential as a top heel act. BTW, what was with the introduction for Barrett? “Please acknowledge the presence of Wade Barrett”? Um, what?

- Dolph Ziggler has “IT”. What he does not have though is good music. Why ruin a good thing? The “I am perfection” fit him perfectly. Whatever the crap he came out to on Monday was just that, CRAP.

- Was my eyes playing tricks on me or was there an Alex Riley sighting on RAW? Is he Miz’s next victim next week?

- Anyone else notice CM Punk is getting away with more and more and sneaking stuff in? Getting away with saying ASS on television, letting out a “WOOOO” when he was handed the title as an homage to Ric Flair since they were in the Carolina’s. Great stuff. I am really hoping they keep the title on him until Mania. Give it some prestige again.

- It is just me or did the Punk vs. Del Rio match feel like a blow off? I thought they were building to the TLC PPV but now, I am not sure.

- Assuming HHH vs. Nash is being pushed to January instead of TLC? Seems like it since HHH was expected back last week and wasn’t on RAW this week.

- Re-writes are a part of RAW. That is a given. Everyone knows it. That being said, WWE had Mae Young backstage at RAW on Monday. They then decided not to use her. Why have a 90 year old woman travel to RAW if you aren’t going to use her? It makes no sense to me.

- Also cut from the show was the debut of the Hispanic stable featuring Primo, Hunico, Epico and Rosa Mendes. They are being written together and have started working house shows and dark matches. They are now set to debut next week.

- Part of the R-Truth beating by Miz has to do with Truth’s suspension but the other half is the fact that Vince McMahon sees money in Truth selling “Little Jimmy” merchandise. He thinks it is a cash cow so he figured he would kill two birds with one stone. He also felt like he needed another top babyface on RAW should something happen to CM Punk or John Cena.

- For those who are wondering why Daniel Bryan went back on his word and attempted to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase last week on Smackdown; Bryan, in an interview with said the following: “It’s simple. I do not like Mark Henry and want to take the title off of him more than I want to headline Wrestlemania.” Bryan feels this way due to the continuous beatings he has received in recent weeks from Henry.

- Smackdown airing live always seems like a better show to me than Friday Night Smackdown. Maybe because the live energy provides a better feel? Is it just me who feels this way?

- Randy Orton is the best wrestler in the business today from a work rate perspective. Everything he does, he does so much better than anyone else. He is such a smooth performer.

- So Hornswoggle can now talk? Really? UGH. Gimmick DEAD.

- Also not helped was Sheamus. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to have Sheamus lose the battle royal to Hornswoggle? I cannot believe that actually happened.

- Evan Bourne’s Wellness suspension ended yesterday. He can rejoin the RAW crew as soon as Monday.

- In a Q & A with fans on twitter, John Cena noted that he is totally on board with changing the look of the WWE title. He actually suggested going back to a retro look of the old “winged eagle” title that Hulk Hogan wore or coming up with a new design for the title. He has wanted this for the past 3 years now.

- I was just informed that NXT is still airing online. The SAME SEASON that started 8 months ago. WOW. Just pick a goddamn winner already.

- It is about 90% CONFIRMED that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will headline next year's Wrestlemania vs. either a heel CM Punk or Brock Lesnar depending on Lesnar UFC status a year from now. Austin is committed to doing one more match with either of the above names. The only reason Austin vs. Punk is not happening on this years show is due to the Rock wrestling Cena. Vince McMahon felt that there is no reason to give away Austin’s first match back in forever since the show is going to draw anyway. Plus, between Rock, Austin and Taker, both the WWE and World titles would be the 4th and 5th most important matches on the show behind the other three.

- The top 4 matches for Mania this year are said to be locked in. This includes Cena/Rock, Daniel Bryan vs. TBD, The WWE title match and the Undertaker match. Taker’s match is said to be a BIG ONE meaning it is either with an outside talent (the only big enough name that is available is Goldberg) or a huge stipulation meaning that Taker is either retiring after the PPV or is putting his streak on the line vs. someone elses career (HHH is the likely candidate).

- Rumblings out of WWE is that this years Royal Rumble will have the traditional 30 participants rather than 40 like last years Rumble match. Fantastic news because I felt that 40 was WAY too much.

- The major impasse that involved Chris Jericho’s return involves the WWE 12 game. When Jericho departed, he refused to sign a merchandising deal with WWE. This was due to the deal including limitations on what outside WWE projects he could be involved in. WWE still harbors bad feelings towards Jericho due to his brief run as a game show host for ABC’s Downfall during his last WWE run. This affected WWE since they have a synergy with NBC Universal due to being on USA Network. WWE wanted him to only take WWE approved projects meaning he would have never been able to appear on Dancing with the Stars (which is also why even though they sent WWE stars to support, they barely mentioned it on WWE TV).

- In all likelihood, Skip Sheffield will be repackaged when he returns from the leg injury that has kept him out of action for the past two years. He will be using his old FCW name of Ryback and WWE will probably not reference his past WWE run with Nexus.

- WWE has released a new Sin Cara T-SHIRT . After posting it on the Shopzone website, they almost IMMEDIATELY removed it. If you didn’t click the link to see it, you should. You’ll immediately see why it was removed.

- Sin Cara had successful surgery on his torn patella and will be out of action for 6 months minimum putting him back in action by May or June. Vince McMahon was reportedly livid when the injury took place however calmed down once he realized that it was just a freak accident and nothing that could have been avoided. There is no heat on Cara over the injury. Vince was said to be more upset that it is the holiday season and they currently have no masked wrestlers to sell merchandise for (masks are a hot seller at Christmas time). He is also upset because as noted in previous columns, WWE was looking to set the most people wearing masks in one place record at this years Mania and with Cara and Mysterio both out, that is likely not going to happen.

- Former WWE Women’s champion Bull Nakano was visiting WWE stars backstage this week during the RAW tour of Japan. Nakano retired from wrestling in 1997 to become a professional golfer. She had lost over 100 pounds however has been trying to gain it back as she plans on having one last match (a retirement match) in 2012 and wants to “look the part” for when it happens.

- Also visiting the RAW crew were former WWE stars Sho Funaki and Yoshihiro Tajiri who both attended WWE events. Funaki actually worked the show as a special referee between Divas champion Beth Phoenix vs. Kelly Kelly.

- Former WWE Women’s champion Lita announced on her Twitter that she was in Stanford Connecticut working on an interview for an upcoming WWE project. No word on whether it is a DVD or something related to the WWE Network.

- WWE has signed Lingerie Football League star DANIELLE MOINET to a developmental contract. She is currently in FCW managing former WWECW Personality Abraham Washington. She has a somewhat physical resemblance to Kelly Kelly.

- The tentative plan for the WWE Network launch is a launch date of April 1, 2012. That is the day of Wrestlemania. WWE has leased a 66,000 square foot studio in Norwalk Connecticut which will be the network base.

- Singer/Actress Jennifer Hudson stated in an interview with Ebony magazine that the only reason she is alive is because of her fiancé, WWE Superstar David Otunga. Hudson revealed for the first time that she was scheduled to fly to Chicago the night before her mother, brother and nephew were brutally slain by her sisters ex-boyfriend in their Chicago home but Otunga convinced her to go with him to Florida instead. Had he not, she would have been in the home at the time of the murders.

- Would everyone please pray for WWE Hall of Famer Tammy “Sunny” Sytch. She is going through a real rough time right now and could use the good vibes.

- I am posting this here rather than in the independent news section because I know not everyone reads that section but according to DAVE MELTZER , longtime professional wrestler Dennis Stamp is currently suffering from advanced stages of cancer and is in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Amarillo Texas. Stamp is best known for his scene stealing performance in the wrestling documentary “Beyond the Mat” for jumping on a trampoline to keep in shape because ”You never know when you’re gonna get the call for a booking” even though he was well into his 50’s and hadn’t wrestled a match in 8 years or so. He always has a good sense of humor about the movie and joked about it during his ClubWWI interview with James Guttman a few years back.

- R.I.P. to comedian Patrice O’Neal who passed away this week at the age of 41. O’Neal, best known for his standup and work on Comedy Central was briefly a writer for WWE several years ago. O’Neal once joked on the Opie and Anthony radio show that when he was fired by Stephanie McMahon, he took it so well that she got upset that he wasn’t angry so she called him back several times throughout the day to fire him again and again.

- Episode 41 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

- Something is obviously wrong with Rob Van Dam. He is moving like an old man. I am not sure if it is because he is hurt or because he is just going through the motions because he has no interest in TNA anymore but he has in fact changed.

- Kurt Angle has stated that he will be at the US Olympic wrestling trials in April in Iowa City to determine the US team that will go to London. He already has a bye for the Olympic qualifying tournament in June due to his Olympic Gold Medal (being a Gold medalist means you have a lifetime of bye for Olympic Qualifying tournaments).

- Remember the angle where Jackie and ODB won contracts from TNA after appearing for several weeks without contracts and then once they won, never appeared on TV again? Well Jackie is now gone from TNA. WHAT AN ANGLE!!!!

- Gotta love Hulk Hogan. LOL. Per his twitter: "Taping again in Orlando, Garrett seems to have found the magic. I only hope it rubs off on some of the other numbskulls."

- Speaking of Hogan, details of his divorce settlement were reached and boy did he take it up the ass!!! According to recently released court documents, Linda Boella received 70% of the couple’s liquid assets, 40% ownership in all companies Hogan has an ownership stake in as well as an additional $3 million from the sale of a vacation home they owned. Linda is also entitled to half of their Florida mansion used during the filming of “Hogan Knows Best” for VH1 which is currently on the market for $8.87 million. Linda also received a Mercedes-Benz, a Cadillac Escalade, a Corvette, a Rolls-Royce and several off road vehicles. As part of the settlement, Hulk will not pay alimony to his ex wife. WOW.

- Per Eric Bischoff’s Twitter: "Very impressed with the way Jeff Hardy is handling himself. Taken responsibility, changed his life and is 100% professional. I doubted Jeff. Not anymore. Admire him for having the balls to overcome his issues and raise his game."

- Matt Hardy was released from prison as the judge overseeing his case lowered his bail from $1,000,000 to $100,000. The DA in the case objected but the judge overruled stating that Hardy was free to go once he posted bond but he had to check back into rehab. A second failure will put him back in prison and raise his bail to $250,000.

TNA “FINAL RESOLUTION” PPV is on December 11th from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • TNA TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. A.J. Styles in a 30 minute Ironman Match
  • Jeff Hardy vs. Jeff Jarrett (If Jarrett wins, Hardy leaves TNA. If Hardy wins, he is #1 contender to the title). Karen Jarrett will be handcuffed to Sting at ringside.
  • TNA TAG TEAM TITLES: Matt Morgan & Crimson (c) vs. ”The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero & Devon
  • TNA X-DIVISION TITLE: Austin Aries (c) vs. Kid Kash
  • KNOCKOUTS TITLE: Gail Kim (c) vs. Mickie James
  • Kurt Angle vs. James Storm

Independent / International News and Notes:

- In what I guess is big news even though it really isn’t THAT big. Evolve Owner and Dragon Gate USA booker Gabe Sapolsky announced that the two promotions will be merging meaning that they will share the same rosters, titles, etc. going forward.

- Remember when I said I know some stuff that is going on at the UWF but wouldn’t report it until the story breaks? Well it is breaking. Current UWF Street King Champion Rasche Brown is GONE from the promotion. He joins Ricky Reyes as two talents who have publically announced that they are not working for UWF due to failed contract negotiations. All the talents who work for the promotion are up for renewal as the six months, 3 PPV deals that they signed for are up. Everyone is negotiating and from what I understand, it does not look good.

- The next set of UWF tapings is scheduled for next week in New York however several of the roster from the first set of tapings is not expected to appear on the show due to contract/financial disputes. Formally announced as not appearing are the names above however I have confirmed that several other talents will no longer be working for the company.

MMA News and Notes

- UFC has announced that the main event for UFC on Fox 2 will be Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis. This is a BIG deal because a loss by Evans will certainly remove him from fighting the winner of the Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida Light heavyweight title fight. Jones vs. Evans has big PPV dollars written all over it.

- Diego Sanchez & Jake Ellenberger have both agreed to fight sometime in 2012 for UFC.

- Chris Leben has been suspended by UFC for ONE YEAR due to failing his post fight drug test following his loss at UFC 138 to Mark Munoz. Leben had traces of Oxycodone and Oxymorphine in his system. It is his second career failure with his first following a 2008 loss to Michael Bisping. Dana White stated that he wants to see Leben get the help he needs and that UFC will be there when he gets it. Side note, the failure was from tests administered by UFC as the show was held in England where there is no athletic commission that tests. So when that happens, UFC pays for testing out of their own pocket to insure no one is cheating. So the suspension is by them and not by an athletic commission. It shows a sign of a real problem with Leben because all of the fighters on the card knew when they were going to be tested and both drugs he was popped for will be out of a human system in 3 – 4 days. So he took the drugs knowing he was going to be tested meaning it wasn’t a fluke but more that he has a problem he needs to deal with. The one year ban by UFC is the longest suspension they have ever given out.

- Beginning with tomorrow’s TUF finale show, Zuffa will have one show per week between now and March 3rd with the exception of Christmas week where no shows are airing. That is OVERKILL.
