T.G.I.F. with Matt Dawgs: #137

Good day to you all and welcome to World Wrestling Insanity. I am your host for today, Matt Dawgs and this is my column. Today is the end of the work week and the time to look back at all the goings-on over the past seven days as I wrap it up with a bow and spout it out bit by bit. Buckle up. Let's go...

CLUB WWI NEWS: Maria, Oh Maria. Yes, former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis is this week’s guest on Club WWI!!!! She is hot, she is awesome and she is HERE. GO LISTEN. CLUB WWI !!! DO IT!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!!

WWE News and Notes

- From Jim Ross’ Twitter: "I apologize 4 the worst segment of tv I've ever killed. Had a rap thought, lost it. Won a Slammy!:)" and that folks sums up RAW in a nutshell. It was just an awful, AWFUL show. Hell, if I didn’t know any better, I would have not remembered that there is a PPV on Sunday. That is how bad this show was. There was little to no push for a PPV event. WOW.

- Speaking of PPV, John Cena is NOT BOOKED IN A MATCH ON PPV. How does that make sense? Why would you not book your top draw on PPV? Nothing is scheduled to be mentioned on Smackdown tonight either so that means they will add something on the internet or day of the PPV. This is MIND BOGGLING. Cena has been in a match on the last 11 WWE PPV’s.

- The only thing I can think of is a Cena Heel turn coming. I hope and pray that is the case because Cena being a schmuck heel is great television. I was watching old “rapping” Cena when he was feuding with Brock Lesnar and the Undertaker on Smackdown a LONG time ago and he was fantastic in that role. His effort on Monday by introducing the Rock to come out only to say he wasn’t there and then saying he sent a video when he didn’t was solid GOLD.

- Normally I would give you bullet points on what was good and bad but Jesus H. Christ, do I have to?

- The Jim Ross rap was scripted. Ross just forgot his lines. I cannot reiterate enough how AWFUL that was. WOW.

- Trending Star of the year? Trending this and trending that. Twitter this and Twitter that. I cannot stand the fact that they continue to beat us over the head with Twitter when it really isn’t doing anything for the company.

- So Triple H’s big return was to come back and accept a Slammy Award for tomb-stoning the Undertaker at Wrestlemania last year and then barely glossing over his ladder match this Sunday with Kevin Nash? Really?

- By the way, the whole award win for HHH was to build to HHH vs. Taker 2 at this year's Mania. 99.9% positive that HHH’s career will be on the line. So he will be officially retiring.

- Clay? Brodus Clay? Clay? No answer. Guess he isn’t debuting yet.

- Nice to see the Roaddog back on WWE Television. He has officially been hired as a full time agent/producer for WWE.

- Also good to see Rey Mysterio back as well. He looked to be walking well without crutches but is a long way from returning full time. He told friends backstage at RAW that he is not going to rush back for Mania and is expected back in May at the earliest. On the flip side, Sin Cara has been telling people that he plans on trying to rush back in time for Mania which is pure insanity.

- Masked Kane is back. Contrary to what is floating around on the internet, WWE did not bring him back in order to break the mask record at Wrestlemania. The reason for the change was to “freshen” the Kane character up and make him appear more menacing.

- Former WWE Diva Amy “Lita” Dumas was ARRESTED over the weekend for driving in excess of maximum speed limits and driving with a suspended license. She was incarcerated and released on $2,200 bond. She did APPEAR on RAW on Monday as a presenter for the Slammy Awards. She cleans up nice. WWE future Hall of Famer TRISH STRATUS was asked to accompany Lita however turned WWE down due to the travel since it was just a cameo appearance.

- I just want to state that when wrestlers in WWE trade wins back and forth from week to week like Rhodes and Bryan or Orton vs. Ziggler then wins and losses are proven to be meaningless. I cannot emphasize the fact enough that there is no need to make wins seem unimportant than by not caring. Examples from Monday are Sheamus brogue kicking Jinder Mahal and then not pinning him or Wade Barrett getting DQ’d by the Big Show. Big Show has a World Title match at the PPV and Barrett is involved in a grudge match with the 2nd top guy in the company. If you didn’t want either of them to lose, don’t book them in a match together. It’s that simple. Show could have beaten Health Slater while Barrett could have beaten Santino.

- Jim Ross wrote the following over the weekend about Jinder Mahal: "Jinder Mahal has a chance but is miles away from where he can & hopefully will be. Brought up too soon." On RAW, Jinder Mahal was killed DEAD by Sheamus and a Brogue Kick in what was supposed to be a match. Sheamus didn’t even bother to pin him. He just kicked him right in the face knocking him unconscious. It sucks to be Mahal right about now. I would go far enough to bet that before the weekend is over, Mahal might even be “Future Endeavored”.

- Remember when Drew McIntyre was Vince McMahon’s hand picked Superstar? HAHAHA.

- In an interesting note, Kelly Kelly re-launched her website under her real name Barbie Blank and had previously insinuated that she wants to branch out (never a good idea for a Diva since everyone who has had outside aspirations always get released). She then went on twitter to put those rumors to rest and changed her website name from to . Coincidence?

- What was up with Tribute to the Troops this year? Felt completely different than years past including it being held indoors. Just felt weird to me. It is as if it was a Smackdown special rather than a stand alone show. They even continued angles on it rather than it be a stand alone show. Did not like.

- NXT is still going on. Do you believe this? Pick a goddamn winner already.

- If anyone is wondering where WWE will go with Chris Jericho upon his return on January 2nd, the current plan is for him to battle CM Punk at Wrestlemania in Miami this year for the WWE title. So Punk is expected to hold onto the title until April at the earliest.

- It is good news for Jericho when he returns because management has lost all confidence in Alberto Del Rio as the top heel for the brand (even though it is absolutely THEIR FAULT for killing his momentum) and they do not see Miz as a strong enough heel to carry them either (Gee, I wonder if it has to do with him winning only one match clean while WWE champion). So the ball falls with Jericho when he returns unless, as mentioned above, Cena turns heel.

- For those who missed Smackdown, Michael Cole was doing commentary and Josh Matthews used the old saying that Cole speaks out of both sides of his mouth basically meaning that he was flip flopping on his opinion. Cole replied, “There is nothing wrong with my mouth unlike JR’s.” this was in fact a direct shot at Ross’ bells palsy. There is one thing called getting heat. It is completely different when you are just bashing someone for the sake of bashing someone. And before everyone gets all uppity on their high horse and says it was Vince McMahon, Vince was in Afghanistan so the line wasn’t fed to Cole. It was ad-libbed.

- Last week I had read Smackdown Spoilers as I usually do before I post my column and read about Kaitlyn turning heel on AJ and joining the Divas of Doom a.k.a. Pin Up Strong. I decided against reporting it because I felt it wasn’t that big of a story. Sure glad I didn’t because WWE edited the heel turn out of the final broadcast and have nixed the idea of Kaitlyn joining Beth Phoenix and Natalya.

- I am going to sum up DAVE MELTZER’S cover story from this week’s Observer very quickly for you. It is on the WWE Network. The first year budget (between salary, production costs, satellite uplinking, legal, marketing, etc is going to cost between $60 - $90 MILLION. In order to BREAK EVEN, WWE is going to have to launch in 40 million homes and receive 20 cents from the cable providers per subscriber. The NBA gets 22 cents per subscriber and the FOX Soccer channel gets 16 cents. If WWE gets low-balled and makes 16 cents per subscriber and get initial clearance on 10 million homes, they will make $19 million in 2012. What did I say that cost of the Network will run in 2012? Oh yeah, between $60 - $90 MILLION. So WWE is going to take a HUGE financial hit with this Network for the first few years. Remember, WWE said they plan on getting into 40 million homes. Well by comparison, the NFL Network is in 56 million homes while the NBA is in 45 million homes. So it is safe to say that WWE is not getting anywhere near that magic number of 40 million.

- Your WWE Champion, CM PUNK .

- “Stone Cold” Steve Austin made it clear about his feelings on returning to wrestle one more match via Twitter: "I wouldn't even consider stepping back in the ring for one more match unless @JRsBBQ was calling it. #bestannouncer."

- WWE is slowly beginning to discontinue WWE Classics on Demand from PPV on demand line-up on January 1st.

- John Morrison is asking for $5,000 per independent wrestling appearance. Suffice to say, no one is kicking down his door to book him. Morrison is likely doing this so he doesn’t get bombarded with offers for shows. He is not really looking to do anything wrestling related right now as those close to him said he basically made his mind up in July to leave the WWE and pursue acting. His plan was to retire completely from wrestling.

- Triple H’s re-launch of the developmental system is going into effect shortly. He has hired a person who works in FCW but is a direct liaison to the developmental team. His job is to help plan new debuts. HHH is also no longer calling anyone up to the main roster until they have a gimmick for them and a long term plan for where they are taking the character (a year is what is being discussed). He no longer wants people being called up and then floundering around doing nothing for a while. Also gone is the fact that they are going to hire bodybuilders and muscle heads. HHH realizes that there are several talents in developmental that are better workers than half the main roster (Dean Ambrose a.k.a. Jon Moxley, Seth Rollins a.k.a. Tyler Black, Richie Steamboat, Husky Harris are a few) and are planning on going back to the golden age of WWE recruiting by getting athletes from college and top notch independent wrestlers. If this is in fact what they stick to then WWE is going to improve by leaps and bounds over the next few years.

- After some unannounced/unforeseen circumstances have delayed his debut, it appears that independent wrestler Chris Hero is set to debut in FCW soon. He announced at a PWG show last weekend that it was his last appearance with the promotion.

- Jack Korpela, commentator for Superstars and NXT as well as pre-PPV specials has left the promotion. His contract extended and he chose to not re-sign.

- MAYRESE !!!!!

- Former WWE Diva Chyna, who has “crossed over” into the adult film industry has added something to her resume. She is now working as an ESCORT where you can pay money for an evening with her. She only charges $3,500 for the first hour and $1,500 each additional hour. Or you can go with $10,000 for 24 hours and $20,000 for a two day weekend.

- Episode 43 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

WWE TLC PPV is THIS SUNDAY from Baltimore Maryland and the line-up is as follows:

  • WWE TITLE: CM Punk (c) vs. The Miz vs. Alberto Del Rio in a TLC match.
  • WORLD TITLE: Mark Henry (c) vs. The Big Show in a Chairs Match.
  • Triple H vs. Kevin Nash in a Ladder Match where a sledgehammer will hang over the ring.
  • Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett in a Tables Match.
  • US TITLE: Dolph Ziggler (c) w/Vickie Guerrero vs. Zack Ryder.
  • WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Booker T

- So those who ordered the TNA PPV last Sunday not only got gipped on a finish for the main event (the 30 minute Iron Man match between Bobby Roode & AJ Styles) since it went to a 3-3 tie but TNA decides to give us another 5 minutes….on Impact…for free.

- Zema Ion vs. Tony Neese? Completely forgot that either of them worked in TNA. WOW.

- Bully Ray is AWESOME. That is all.

- Jesse Neal is in fact done with TNA. He was asked to relocate to Louisville Kentucky for OVW wrestling and declined. Not because he didn’t want to improve but more so because financially it would be a burden to relocate. The angle with Gunner piledriving him and doing a stretcher job is likely him being written out.

- In what was a surprise, Eric Bischoff was not backstage at TNA’s Final Resolution PPV last Sunday. It marked the first time since Hogan and Bischoff joined the company that neither was backstage for a PPV. Bischoff said that he missed the show due to personal business in Arizona (where he lives).

- Ric Flair is working the New England portion of the TNA houseshow run in January.

- In addition to being sued by her husband Hulk Hogan, Linda Boella is also being sued for defamation by Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake. In her book, Linda claims that Hogan had a sexual relationship with Beefcake.

- The TNA India project is scheduled to tape 26 episodes and will include the following roster:

  • Jeff Jarrett
  • Chris Masters
  • Sonjay Dutt
  • Zema Ion
  • Nick Dinsmore
  • Trevor Murdoch
  • Scott Steiner
  • Abyss
  • Chavo Guerrero
  • Joey Ryan
  • Melissa Anderson (formerly Alyssa Flash)
  • Shawn Davairi
  • Jimmy Rave
  • Harry D.H. Smith
  • Drew Hankinson (formerly Luke Gallows)
  • The bookers/agents are Dutch Mantel, Dave Lagana, Jeff Jarrett and Savio Vega

Independent / International News and Notes:

- After disputed reports, it looks like the infamous ECW Arena will no longer host professional wrestling after the CZW/Evolve double header on January 14th, 2012. This is a major blow to independent professional wrestling as the Arena held a ton of memories and classic moments. The new owner plans on turning the building into a concert hall full time.

- Ross and Marshall Adkisson (Von Erich) will debut for Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan in the New Year. They are the sons of Kevin Von Erich and have been training with Harley Race for a while now. That automatically makes them better than 90% of the FCW roster.

- I haven’t commented on the Resistance Pro Wrestling group owned by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins yet mainly because I am waiting for them to get their feet wet and get an audience. However, they are off to a good start as Raven is booking and they have a roster full of talented people including Harry Smith, Kevin Steen, Colt Cabana, Tara, The Briscoes, Petey Williams, Necro Butcher and more.

- Urban Wrestling Federation rapped 40 Glocc was arrested last week for attempting to strangle his longtime girlfriend three times in one day. He has not made bail as of this writing and is still locked up.

- Episode 8 of “ TOMMY DREAMER TV

  • ROH TITLE: ROH Champ Davey Richards (c) vs. “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards with UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn

  • T.J. Perkins vs. Michael Elgin w/Truth Martini
  • Roderick Strong vs. TBA
  • Tommaso Ciampa vs. TBA

MMA News and Notes

- UFC presented a damn good show last weekend capped by Jon Jones once again proving that he is a phenomenon vs. Lyoto Machida. UFC 140 featured 9 of the 12 fights ending by referee stoppages. WOW. Anyway, Jones decided to go one on one with Machida Karate and stand and trade with Machida. For the first time in his career, Jones looked threatened. He was missing shots and getting nailed by punches and kicks from Machida. He lost the first round on all judges’ scorecards all because he tried to stand with a karate expert. So in round 2, like he flicked a switch, Jones decided standing wasn’t the best option. He immediately took the elusive Machida to the ground using his wrestling skills and pummeled him with punches and elbows. Machida was SPLIT WIDE OPEN with a deep cut. He then ended up forcing Machida to submit via A STANDING GUILLOTINE. Guillotines are one of the hardest submissions to win with since you can still move most of your body to escape or gain leverage so you are choked unconscious. Jones not only pulled one off, he pulled one off WHILE ON HIS FEET. After he choked out Machida, Machida fell to the floor limp. He was woken by medical officials and is fine.

- Jon Jones is the TRUTH. Bear in mind that he is only 24 years old and has yet to reach his physical prime. I honestly do not see him losing to anyone in the light heavyweight division. Here is a list of fighters that Jones has beaten in the last 12 months:

  • Ryan Bader
  • Mauricio “Shogun: Rua
  • Quinton “Rampage” Jackson
  • Lyoto Machida

- Also on the show, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira a.k.a. Big Nog’s career was put in jeopardy as Frank Mir, who was losing, ended up locking Big Nog in a kimura. Well in Brazil, for some reason you are taught not to tap out. So Frank Mir went with the old saying “Tap or Snap”. Frank Mir ended up BREAKING BIG NOG’S ARM!!!! Fair warning, the link you are about to click is probably one of the most gruesome things you have ever witnessed. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED . The damage to his arm is extensive and will take a long time for him to recover, if he ever does. The good news is that the bone break was clean and therefore will heal on its own. It does not require surgery. This was Nogueira’s first career submission loss.

- Mir does need to shed some weight though. He bulked up after losing to Brock Lesnar feeling it would make it more difficult for Lesnar to push him around. Now, he looks sluggish and slow out there.

- Antonio Rogueiro Noguiera fared better in his fight as he defeated UFC legend Tito Ortiz by TKO in round 1. Tito looked sluggish coming into the fight meaning he was not at 100% but this was added to the fact that Ortiz caught a knee in the ribs while on the ground that absolutely broke a rib or two. Ortiz did not refute the ref stoppage and was obviously in serious pain. He then basically pleaded following the fight for UFC to allow him to finish off his contract as he has one fight left on his deal and basically stated that it will likely be his retirement fight. I honestly don’t see UFC NOT giving it to him. He is still a name and a retirement fight on Fox for example would bring viewers. Ortiz, with his fight vs. Lil Nog made UFC history as having the most fights in UFC history.

- Ortiz’s last fight will likely be vs. Forrest Griffith.

- UFC announced over the weekend that they are starting a Flyweight Division with a tournament to be held on March 3rd to crown the champion. The competitors will be Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani. The winners will face off at a future date.

- Poor Mark Hominick. Chan Sung Jung a.k.a. the Korean Zombie knocked Hominick out in 7 seconds. That is not a typo. 7 second first round knockout.

- We now have our first major Alistair Overeem saga going on. Overeem was granted a conditional license to fight in the state of Nevada on December 30th vs. Brock Lesnar. There was a hearing of the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Monday due to the fact that both Overeem and Lesnar were notified on November 17th that they had to submit to random drug testing. Lesnar took his test on Monday November 21st and came up clean. Overeem however left Las Vegas for Nevada on November 17th to be with his mother who is suffering from her third bout with cancer. The saving grace for Overeem is that he apparently booked his flight on November 15th (before he knew there was a test being taken although the NSAC did not ask for proof that he paid for this trip on the 15th). He did not respond to the NSAC request until the 20th. He took a blood test on the 23rd from his PERSONAL PHYSICIAN instead of an independent lab. He received the results back 8-10 days later saying he was clean. 3 – 4 days following that, the NSAC said that it was insufficient since they needed a urine sample, he did not take a new test until December 7th, in Germany. The NSAC then stated that they need him to go to an independent laboratory, preferable in the United Kingdom instead of his home country of Holland within the next 72 hours. He must submit to a new test upon his arrival to the United States before his fight with Lesnar. He must then take an additional 2 tests over the next 6 months AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. Overeem blamed most of the miscommunication on his personal assistant who was to notify him of all this and was late in reaching him on more than one occasion. Overeem also stated that he is not used to random testing and testing procedures since the majority of his career fights have been in Japan where there is no testing at all or in Strikeforce where there is no random testing, only testing the week of the fight and immediately after the fight by Strikeforce officials. So the conditional license was granted however if he fails to abide by the conditions placed upon him or should he not get tested within 72 hours of their request in the future, he will likely be suspended by the NSAC.

- Dana White had a weekend full of announcements alongside UFC 140. White confirmed that he has reached a deal with Showtime for Strikeforce to air on the network until 2014. With that happening, it is now unlikely that Gilbert Melendez will be making the jump to UFC since he is the one champion the promotion still has.

- That doesn’t mean that UFC isn’t going to pick the best talents out of Strikeforce because Fabricio Werdum will make his return to UFC on February 3rd vs. Roy Nelson. Werdum is 2-2 in UFC with his final fight being a loss to an up and coming Junior Dos Santos via 1st round knockout. Dana White also concluded that he is getting rid of the heavyweight division in Strikeforce since it is weak. That likely means that Josh Barnett may have a UFC appearance in his future.

- It was also announced this week that Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfot will be coaches for the debut of TUF in Brazil. The show will be filmed in Brazil and air on Globo in Brazil with replays airing in the US on Fuel but will be subtitled as the show will be taped in Portuguese.

- Brock Lesnar is scheduled to face “wildlife charges” in Canada. He is charged with three counts of violating the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Act. He will likely get off with paying a fine.

- George St. Pierre’s knee surgery was a complete success. He is expected to be out of action recovering for 10 months.

- Miguel Torres has been cut from UFC for making an offensive rape joke on Twitter. First he repeated a joke from the hit FX show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” but he then continued on making rape jokes. Dana White released him as these comments came the DAY after Rashad Evans make a Jerry Sandusky comment about his upcoming opponent Phil Davis (who is a Penn State alumni). White, when pressed about the fact that he is firing Torres but not Evans, stated that it is not hypocritical and he is now using Torres as an example. He dared ANYONE on the roster to make another rape joke and watch what happens.

- UFC debuts on Fuel on January 1st with a 24 HOUR UFC marathon.

- Too many details to go into but former UFC fighter Junie Browning, best known for being released from UFC for attacking several doctors and nurses at a hospital after a suicide attempt, is currently wanted by both the police and the Phuket Mafia in the Thailand due to beating up SEVERAL patrons at a bar in Thailand and then more people in a hospital which he was brought to for treatment. He is trying to reach the American Embassy to get help getting out of the country as a manhunt has begun for him.

- UFC Ring Girl BRITTNEY PALMER returned to UFC at UFC 140 and they also announced that she will be posing for Playboy in the future.

- Best of Pride host KENDRA PEREZ is in the UK version of Maxim.
