WWE News and Notes

- WOW. They really did it. They had an entire WWE PPV without John Cena appearing on it. I did not think it would happen. Amazing and impressed.

- Also amazed that WWE decided to forego their own angle and have Daniel Bryan cash in his “Money in the Bank” briefcase BEFORE Wrestlemania. Bryan defeated the Big Show (after Show defeated Mark Henry) to win the World title. After Show won, he was laid out by Henry who DDT’d him on a chair. Bryan immediately ran out and pinned him for the win.

- DANIEL BRYAN TITLE WIN .

- FYI…WWE took the title off of Henry due to necessity. Henry was scheduled to hold the belt until Rumble at the earliest however he is injured and needs some time off. No update on the severity of his injury. They put the title on Big Show and then had Bryan beat him so that they can continue with a Show/Bryan angle and not have to involve Henry.

- For everyone hoping for a long Daniel Bryan title run and possibility of him and CM Punk both headlining at Mania, do not get your hopes up too high. Former WWE creative team member Seth Mates put it all in perspective with the following: "To borrow a holiday metaphor, this is the time of year (between Survivor Series & Rumble) when Vince 'tries on' his new clothes or new main eventers. Foley (99), Jericho (01), Evolution (03), Edge (06), Sheamus (09), Miz (10), Bryan (11) among those elevated during this stretch of (the year). And to continue with the bad holiday metaphor, Vince has (until) Rumble undercard to return them if they don't fit just right. Also, Jeff Hardy in '08 - almost forgot him."

- Woo Woo Woo, you know it BRO. Zack Ryder won the US title from Dolph Ziggler in what was a fantastic match that the crowd completely ate up. They were on their feet for the whole match and went nuts when he won clean with the “Ruff Ryder”. Side note: I think I have mentioned this before but if I have not, Ziggler was on his state champion wrestling team in high school with UFC star Gray Maynard.

- Kevin Nash likely wrestled his last WWE match on Sunday vs. HHH. Nash basically wrote as much on Twitter following the TLC PPV by writing “Thanks Paul, nice to end it with someone I love.” HHH vs. Nash was a decent match (a lot better than it should have been) but still pretty low on the totem pole by other ladder match standards. Nash was defeated and stretchered out.

- Nash was legit banged up after the match as he suffered a minor concussion as well as some elbow problems.

- Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager Mr. John Laurinaitis is really hitting his stride as a television character. His line to Punk about mailing his Slammy award to him but it not arriving yet due to the holiday rush of mail was GOLDEN!!!!

- CM Punk on Twitter following the TLC PPV: "Very proud right now. Proud of @WWEDanielBryan proud of@ZackRyder proud of my crew of young, talented hard workers.@findevan @TrueKofi and a ton of others. Tonight was a great step toward the future of the wrestling business. That change I've been talking about? Started."

- Who would have thought they’d see THIS PICTURE back in 2005? The answer is likely NO ONE.

- Daniel Bryan on the above mentioned photo: "Six years ago CM Punk and I wrestled a 45 minute match in Florida in front of probably 36 people. It’s fun watching us pretend to be superstars when we’re really just a couple of Indy schmucks."

- Was it me or did Alberto Del Rio look PISSED during the main event on Sunday? He was stiffing both Miz and Punk with all sorts of shots. Chair shots, forearms, punches. It looked like he was mad at the world.

- RAW was a step up from the past few weeks of crap that they have been putting on. The opening segment with CM Punk doing introductions was awesome and the fact that the show was built around the “younger” WWE talents felt like a breath of fresh air.

- The CHANGE CM Punk has been talking about. I like it. But before everyone gets all excited and does happy dances in their living rooms, the main event of this week’s RAW drew a 2.6 which is the lowest rated main event for RAW since 1997. I am not contributing that to the participants (Punk/Bryan/Ryder/Miz/Del Rio/Ziggler) but more to the fact that it is going to take time to buy anyone except Punk as a main event level act. That is what happens when you do not allow heels to get heat (Miz/Del Rio), have announcers drill in our head that a talent is a loser and a nerd and not a main event talent (Bryan), beat someone on television week after week after week after week (Ryder) or push someone as a mid card talent who is awesome but cannot hang with the main event talents (Ziggler). You can’t bury people for months on end and then push them in a top spot out of the blue and expect them to be “over”. It takes time and hopefully WWE doesn’t pull the rug out from under them without giving it time.

- So Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett for the first time of their feud wrestled in a Tables match at the TLC PPV and then they follow that up with a singles match? Never mind the fact that the singles match on RAW used the angle that SHOULD HAVE BEEN USED to promote the tables match? So they shot the angle AFTER the actual match? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for Barrett to put Orton through a table at the “go-home” show for TLC?

- Alicia Fox is the next diva charity case to get a main feud. WWE Divas Champion Beth Phoenix is NOT HAPPY with Alicia Fox following their match on RAW. OUCH.

- Jinder Mahal survived another week. Good news for him.

- WWE has nixed the “Latin Freebirds” idea. Hunico is going to be kept separate from Primo & Epico (managed by Rosa Mendes). Instead, Hunico has been paired with Donny Marlow from FCW as his bodyguard. Marlow is the son of WWE legend and former Club WWI guest Haku a.k.a. Meng.

- Does anyone think Jerry “the King” Lawler was spoken to during or after RAW for calling Epico the name “Carlito” on air? LOL, That was hilarious.

- Kane, before his return last Monday on RAW, was last seen on the Smackdown brand being “injured” by Mark Henry. Well that is old news as Kane has officially been moved to the RAW roster. His attack of John Cena was pretty cool and they are going in the right direction with the build up of him as a monster again. Hopefully they don’t blow it.

- Big Show’s promo on Daniel Bryan was good stuff. I hope they turn him heel and push him in a similar pattern that they pushed Mark Henry in, just as long as they do not turn Bryan yet. While Bryan can make a good heel proven by his ROH work, he needs to stay face a little while since he just won the title. Show has been absolutely AWESOME with his acting skills over the past few months. Monster Show = GOOD FOR BUSINESS. To quote Steve Corino, “If I was booking WWE, Big Show would never lose. EVER.”

- PROPHETLESS .

- Where is Alex Riley? Remember that push he got when he initially turned babyface on the Miz and the crowd was 100% behind him?

- And while we are on the subject of “where are”, WHERE. THE. HELL. IS. BRODUS. CLAY? Is he never debuting? Did they not find a new person to play him yet?

- Expect a fairly big RAW on Monday as the show takes place in Chicago Illinois, home of WWE Champion CM Punk.

- So you know, R-Truth has officially served his 30 days and is welcome to come back to WWE beginning this weekend (although there are no shows this weekend).

- CENA SUCKS ? Yes, WWE has launched a Cena Sucks t-shirt so that all the fans that boo him can now have a shirt. Funny thing is, the fans that will buy this and wear it to shows are actually putting money into Cena’s pockets so I am sure he thanks you.

- Cena also scored a licensing deal with….drum roll please….Fruit Pebbles cereal. Yes, this is not a joke. Cena will be featured on boxes of Fruit Pebbles cereal giving fans a chance to win free merchandise and live event tickets. Sheer genius.

- The plan as of right this minute is for The Undertaker to put his streak on the line at Wrestlemania vs. Triple H’s career but the catch is, Shawn Michaels is penciled in to be the referee. The backstory will be that Shawn, who stated last year that he did not think HHH could beat Taker, is refereeing. So the odds are now stacked against Taker.

- Former professional basketball player and future basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal told the Abe Kanan show on Sirius yesterday that he has begun talks to wrestle the Big Show at Wrestlemania this year.

- Survivor Series drew an estimated 310,000 PPV buys. That number is up from last year but has to be considered a disappointment since it was the first Rock match in 7 years. But it is what it is. WWE can’t expect a monster buyrate when they did nothing at all to make the match interesting. No one in their right minds thought Miz and Truth had a chance to win considering they were made to look like jabronies at every turn and no one wanted Cena and Rock to be partners.

- WWE has released the “Divas” DLC pack for WWE 12. The pack features Trish Stratus, The Bella Twins, Vickie Guerrero, Alicia Fox and Kharma.

- With all the work currently being done behind the scenes to launch the WWE Network, WWE has quietly begun working on finding a physical home for the WWE Hall of Fame. They would like to be able to open the Hall soon after the launch of the Network as well as film “historical” WWE programming from the building.

- Speaking of the Network, it isn’t looking good. They have yet to hire a Network head or a full staff. Time is ticking away and a successful launch by April 1st is unlikely. Not that they are not going to launch on April 1st because they are, just not successfully. They have been working diligently behind the scenes to film additional things for the Network including having a camera crew fly to San Antonio and sit with Shawn Michaels for several hours filming various things as well as having Tommy Dreamer come to Stanford to sit down and film stuff with Joey Styles on ECW and by holding an event for FCW at a university in Florida to test a possible program on the WWE developmental system. So they have ideas ready to go, only no staff to implement them.

- Also of note, WWE does not plan on being a full time “wrestling” network. They want to be able to eventually air shows that are not related to WWE nor even fit into their demographics. For example, the History Channel airs a bunch of documentaries and historical shows yet their highest rated show (and one of the most popular shows on all of cable) is Pawn Stars which has nothing to do at all with their normal type of programming. WWE wants to eventually do the same.

- WWE will be holding their first ever live events in Russia in April 2012.

- Chris Jericho hanging out with some FRIENDS .

- WWE agent Goldust stated on his Twitter that he is blocking any followers who do not believe in Jesus Christ. WWE banned him from using twitter for a while earlier in the year for blocking users for no reason at all. I cannot see him using Twitter for much longer. Either way, I un-followed him long ago because his tweets are annoying and spam-like.

- WWE Hall of Famer, former governor of Minnesota Jessie “The Body” Ventura is planning on suing the TMZ website for reporting a false story on him saying he was pulled over by California police earlier this week for tailgating someone. Ventura is claiming that he has not been in the state of California since July and the story has since been removed which is unusual because TMZ NEVER removes stories when they have been asked in the past because they tend to stick to their sources.

- There are rumors floating around that Chris Hero has had his WWE Developmental offer rescinded by WWE. This is not 100% accurate. Hero has been under going some medical issues that raised some small red flags for WWE brass. WWE wants him to undergo some more tests in January to see if they can sign him. So while he is still not officially under contract yet, he is still on the radar and they still are interested in him. Imagine a FCW roster featuring Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, Tyler Black, Jon Moxley, Richie Steamboat, etc would probably be the strongest developmental class since Brock Lesnar, Shelton Benjamin, Randy Orton, Charlie Haas, John Cena, etc.

- Skip Sheffield (using the name Ryback) is not expected to return to television until 2012. His profile was removed from the WWE website and he deleted some tweets he tweeted regarding his return.

- FCW Diva EDEN STILES (Brandi Alexis Reed), who has been doing ring announcing duties on the main roster for NXT, Superstars and houseshows has requested and received her release from WWE. It is partly due to the return of Lillian Garcia. Stiles was a former bikini model that was signed and sent to FCW to train. When they realized that she could not wrestle, they called her up to the main roster to do ring announcing but she wasn’t very good at that either. With Lillian’s return, there is no need for her. She is however currently romantically involved with Cody Rhodes and that also played a part in her departing as she stated via her twitter that “most people in relationships prefer to not work together.”

- Seth Rollins a.k.a. Tyler Black of ROH fame was on the road last weekend with WWE working live events as an evaluation by the agents/producers of his talent.

- Former Tough Enough competitor Ivelisse has debuted in FCW using the name Sofia Cortez.

- Not sure why but Pee Wee Herman was backstage at FCW’s TV tapings last week.

- Former WWE Diva Ashley Massaro was in the front row of the WWE Live Event last Saturday from the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island New York.

- In sad news, as reported a few weeks ago, WWE Legend Kamala had his foot amputated due to complications from high blood pressure and diabetes. As it turns out, he had to go back into this hospital this week to have the upper part of his leg removed. So essentially, he only has one leg now. Horrible turn of events. Please keep him in your prayers.

- Head of NBCU Cable Bonnie Hammer (the woman who is friends with Vince McMahon and WWE’s biggest ally in television) is the SECOND MOST POWERFUL WOMAN IN ENTERTAINMENT .

- Episode 44 of " Z! True Long Island Story ".

IMPACT WRESTLING News and Notes

- I wonder how Samoa Joe feels right now or thinks since he is in TNA doing absolutely nothing of importance while two people who were arguably not as talented as him 7 years ago are on the top of the WWE food chain right now. Do you think he made the right choice going to TNA?

- Both Karen and Jeff Jarrett were “fired” by Sting from Impact Wrestling. Jarrett in reality is gone because he is working on the India project as well as All Wheels Wrestling for the Speed Channel. Karen was written out because she needs surgery on her foot which would keep her out of action for several weeks.

- Chavo Guerrero is expected to start with TNA in early 2012.

- Linda Hogan is in rehab….RELATIONSHIP REHAB ON VH1!!!! She is in the new relationship repair show with her 23 year old boyfriend Charlie Hill.

- Not going to go too much into detail on the TNA India Project now titled: “Ring Ka King” mainly because it isn’t expected to air here in the US and eventually is not going to feature many TNA wrestlers. But they did manage to hold their first taping for the show in India which featured Matt Morgan being crowned the Heavyweight Champion and Harry Smith & Chavo Guerrero winning the tag team titles. All reports are saying that the experience was incredible and the crowds were amazingly hot however on the flip side, all the reports have come from TNA employees. I did in fact hear that “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner nearly incited a riot which is absolutely something I can believe since he has always been able to get mega heat from foreign crowds. None of the American talents who worked the show are signed to contracts. The only talents signed are the Indian talents who worked the show.

TNA Genesis PPV is on January 8, 2012 from Orlando Florida and the line-up is as follows:

  • IMPACT TITLE: Bobby Roode (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
  • TNA TAG TITLES: Matt Morgan & Crimson (c) vs. Samoa Joe & Magnus
  • X-DIVISION TITLE: Austin Aries (c) vs. Kid Kash vs. Jesse Sorenson vs. Zema Ion
  • Kurt Angle vs. James Storm

- Ring of Honor has announced that the 10th Anniversary Show will be held on March 4th 2012 at the Hammerstein ballroom in New York.

- Evolve and Dragon Gate USA Booker Gabe Sapolsky COMMENTS on CM Punk and Daniel Bryan holding the top titles in WWE.

- While not official as the new owner of the former ECW arena met with several promoters and stated that she is open to renting out the arena for wrestling events, it will be no time soon. She has decided that the arena will be shut down beginning on February 1st for a complete overhaul of the building. So until that is complete, the building will not be host to anything at all. Once completed, concerts will be the first priority. Plus, with the new renovations, wrestling may get priced out since it will cost more for a rental.

- With the above in mind, Gabe Sapolsky has reached out to several former ECW superstars about attending the show as a special farewell to the building.

- Episode 9 of “ TOMMY DREAMER TV

ROH FINAL BATTLE is TOMORROW NIGHT from New York City and the line-up is as follows:

  • ROH TITLE: ROH Champ Davey Richards (c) vs. “Die Hard” Eddie Edwards with UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn
  • ROH TAG TEAM TITLES: ROH Tag Champs Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) (c) vs. The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe)

  • Roderick Strong vs. TBA
  • Tommaso Ciampa w/ The Embassy vs. Jimmy Rave

MMA News and Notes

- So far so good. Alistair Overeem has passed his first scheduled drug test for the December 30th fight vs. Brock Lesnar.

- A second opinion was taken in regards to the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira broken arm and a good thing it was. Nogueira had to undergo surgery after all (even though the first doctor he visited stated that he only needed a brace). Big Nog had a titanium plate and 16 screws planted in his arm to reset the bone. He will be out of action for a MINIMUM of 6 months before he can begin training. He will not likely fight again until the end of 2012 or sometime in 2013. Since he did not tap when he should have, he also suffered shoulder and elbow damage (but no breaks there) as well as nerve damage. He currently has very little strength in his arm and can barely grip anything.

- I really do not think that there is any woman in MMA today that can dethrone Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the 145 lb woman’s title. Cyborg returned to the cage for the first time since she completely obliterated Jan Finney more than 16 months ago. How did she do against Hiroko Yamanaka, a woman many thought would give Cyborg her first form of competition? She knocked her out in 16 seconds. Unbelievable.

- Spike TV continues to throw shots at UFC. Earlier this week they announced that they have a new series beginning on March 2nd called “Ultimate Fighter Friday’s” which will feature episodes focused on such TUF alumni as Forrest Griffin, Michael Bisping, Josh Koscheck, Nate Diaz, Rashad Evans and others. The show will air every Friday from 9:00 pm ET to Midnight ET thus going head to head with new episodes of The Ultimate Fighter on FX. All of this scheduling by Spike is a way to force UFC into purchasing back the rights to their tape library thus getting out of their contract with UFC and allowing Bellator to start airing on Spike as soon as possible. With the current contract, Bellator cannot debut on Spike until January 1, 2013.

- The influx of heavyweights from Strikeforce has started. The “Gravedigger” Chad Griggs will debut in UFC in 2012.

- Brock Lesnar pleaded guilty to “wildlife charges” in Canada for failing to properly tag a mule deer he shot during a filmed hunt. He was fined $1,725 and had his hunting license suspended for 6 months.

- Gabriel Gonzaga has re-joined UFC and will be fighting on the UFC Brazil card on January 14th.

- The LATEST on the Junie Browning ordeal.(MATT NOTE: Following this article, Browning turned himself in to Phuket police.)

- GINA CARANO .

- So it looks like the proposed Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing extravaganza tentatively scheduled for May 5, 2012 (which if it eventually happens will be the highest PPV buyrate for any PPV in YEARS as it will easily top 2,000,000 buys) is OFF. Mayweather will have to serve 90 days in jail stemming from a domestic violence incident involving the mother of his children back in 2010. Mayweather is set to turn himself in on January 6th meaning he will be in prison until April thus not giving him ample time to train. I am still on the boat of people who say that the fight will NEVER happen.

UFC 141 is on December 30th from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem
  • Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
  • Johny Hendricks vs. Jon Fitch
  • Nam Phan vs. Jimy Hettes

STRIKEFORCE 38 is on January 7th from Las Vegas Nevada and the line-up is as follows:

  • STRIKEFORCE MIDDLEWEIGT TITLE: Luke Rockhold (c) vs. Keith Jardine.
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Adlan Amagov
  • Mohammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Lorenzo Larkin
  • Tarec Saffiedine vs. Tyler Stinson

UFC 142 is on January 14, 2012 from Rio de Janeiro Brazil and the line-up is as follows:

  • Rousimar Palhares vs, Mke Massenzio
  • Erick Silva vs, Siyar Bahadurzada
  • Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim

  • Melvin Guillard vs. Jim Miller

  • Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis
  • Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz
  • Michael Bisping vs. Demian Maia

  • INTERIM WELTERWEIGHT TITLE: Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz
  • Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce

- Conflicted feelings on the latest James Bond news. Bond producer Michael Wilson told The Hollywood Reporter that he is in negotiations with Daniel Craig to reprise the James Bond role for 5 additional films which would tie him with Roger Moore for a total of 8 films. I am torn. Craig is AWESOME as Bond. He’s definitely the best in my lifetime and on par or surpassing Sean Connery depending on who you ask. The flip side of that is that a few months ago there were rumors that actor Idris Elba was being considered for the spot. I think Elba is fantastic as an actor and would do well in the role. Plus having an African American Bond would be fantastic. If Craig does in fact sign to do 5 more films, by the time he is done, Elba will be at least 50 years old or older thus putting him out of contention to play Bond. Craig began playing Bond in 2005 at age 37. Elba is 39 right now.

- Actor Vin Diesel confirmed to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER that the next “Fast and Furious” film tentatively titled “Fast 6” is actually “Fast 6 & 7”!!!! The script for the film is too long and cutting it down would be detrimental to the film so the studio told them to break it up into two parts.

That is awesome news for Vanessa Bryant because in a strange coincidence, after being married for 10 years, a spouse is entitled to HALF of all assets in the state of California as well as lifetime spousal support. Also luckily for her, she did not have to sign a prenuptial agreement before marrying Bryant. CHA-CHING!!!! #getyourmoneybitch.

- Check it out at CLUBWWI.COM if you haven't had a chance yet. There are literally HUNDREDS of interviews with your favorite wrestling stars of yesteryear and today!!! If you're not a member then please do yourself a favor and JOIN CLUB WWI right NOW!!!! What are you waiting for? DO IT. DO IT NOW. Good stuff folks; don't miss out. You'll thank me for it.

Feel free to discuss whatever you'd like in the "Anger Management" section of the message board or whichever section you see fit. Also drop a comment in the comment box below as I try my best to answer in a timely fashion.
