Insanity Readers and Staff Choose: 2007's Wrestler of The Year

By World Wrestling Insanity's Readers & Staff
Dec 30, 2007 - 7:56 PM

...

This is it.  The big one.  2007's top wrestler.  Everyone has a different voting criteria.  You have your own.  Did you agree with the readers or the staff?  Well, take a look and judge for yourself.

2007 Wrestler of the Year is...

      Staff Choice
        Readers Choice

John Cena               Randy Orton

Readers Choice ... Randy Orton

2nd Place:  John Cena
3rd Place:   C.M. Punk

Reader Comments:

"I was tempted to go for Cena, who not only dominated Raw until his injury, but has impressed me this year (and I used to be a Cena hater), but I'm going for Orton. He had a slow start to the year, but I enjoyed his mini-feud with Edge that included a high quality match on Raw, but his character had a much needed change of direction when he went back to his 'legend killer' ways, and his spring/summer feuds with HBK, RVD and Cena in particular were well played out, and people really wanted to boo Orton. His title run over the last couple of months has been good, far better than his first title run three years ago, in my eyes because he has turned into the best heel in since Triple H circa 1999/2000 (just my opinion). I just hope he can improve his behavior backstage because he truly is a special talent. "
- Tomamar

"Randy was always a guy WWE wanted to push, but held himself back. Well this year (despite still having some problems) Randy lifted his game and with the great head-kicking gimmick finally got the run he deserved. Great performances on the mic and consistantly high quality matches make Randy, in my opinion, the stand-out wrestler of 2007."
- Blair Tyler

"I suppose that Randy Orton is the choice mainly because he is the only main event wrestler on either Raw or Smackdown who did not miss significant time due to injury and/or supension for violating the wellness policy. He also deserves it because he has really improved his in-ring ability and no one cuts an intense heel promo like Randy Orton. "
- Ken Langston

Staff Choice ... John Cena

2nd Place:  Umaga/MVP (tie)

Staff Comments:

" Like it or not (and I'm guessing most of you fall into the "not" camp), John Cena was the dominant wrestler in 2007. Not the best worker, not the most improved, and certainly not the most popular -- but he was certainly dominant. If he hadn't been injured by Ken Kennedy, it's a fairly safe bet that he'd still be going over the Ortons, Kennedys and Khalis of the world.

But even in the year through October, Cena was victorious over everyone from Shawn Michaels to Umaga, and Bobby Lashley to Great Khali. The one thing I'll give Cena this year (over past years) is, he looked comfortable doing it. You can't fault Cena for pandering to the fans or using juvenile humor the way you could even a year ago; that's the sole domain of DX these days."
- Canadian Bulldog

"With wrestlers dropping like flies throughout 2007, it was tough to find anyone worthy who had wrestled for more than a few months at a time. Despite his injury which kept him sideline for the last few months of 2008, John Cena deserves the nod. Cena was able to win over some new fans in 2007, he worked a surprisingly good program with Umaga, carried the Great Khali to watchable matches, carried his weight in matches with Shawn Michaels, and helped cement Randy Orton as the WWE’s #1 heel. Anyone who doubts Cena’s role as the WWE’s #1 face need look no further than the fact that the WWE allowed him to have one of the longest championship reigns in the last two decades."
- Mike Rickard

" John Cena hands down. He has been phenomenal in his role all year since the early feud with Edge to his feud with Shawn Michaels to Umaga all the way up until his Orton feud and subsequent injury. He has been great on the mic, improving in the ring and even though he hasn't been a technician with 5 star Angle/Michaels like performances, he has at least been doing what he does very well."
- Matt Dawgs

" He's had a lot of high quality of matches with a range of opponents, ranging from Great Khali to Shawn Michaels. There might be better workers out there in one or two matches, but for a near-full year's worth of matches, there's no-one in sight for me."
- Aaron Wood
