Insanity Readers and Staff Choose: 2005's Wrestler of the Year
By World Wrestling Insanity's Readers and Staff
The votes are in. This is the big one. Who did you guys choose as the Wrestler of the Year? Well...
2005 Reader's Choice for Wrestler of the Year... Shawn Michaels
2nd Place: Samoa Joe 3rd Place: Dave Batista Reader Comments: "Consistently amazing, he truly is the show-stopper. Long may he continue on this form." - Craig Elder "In his second career he is having a better career than his first career. I am not a Shawn fan boy, but nobody had more good matches with as many opponents in the past year as Shawn did. His tweener heel stuff with Hogan was gold and so was the entire Kurt Angle program." - Matthew Roberts "Last year before Taboo Tuesday, there was an online poll on who fans would like to see wrestle HHH for the World Title and we all picked Chris Benoit, cuz of the internet's fan fondness of him..., while we all know it was HBK who ended up winning the Taboo Tuesday vote, this year and last (rigged or not..) There was this thought that the internet fan enjoyed technical wrestling matches the most and because of that we would never equate Shawn Michaels on the same line as Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, etc... We were proven wrong this year... Shawn Michaels proved to us this year through the WORST opponents (Hogan, Masters, Carlito and now SNITSKY) as well as the best technical matches (Shelton Benjamin, 3 single matches w/ Kurt Angle) that he could get it done... and forever will he remembered as one of the greats.. screwing Bret Hart, reformed Christian, good promos or not." - R.H., Buffalo, NY Now the staff choice. This one was a blow-away... 2005 Insanity Staff's Choice for Wrestler of the Year... Samoa Joe
2nd Place: Shawn Michaels 3rd Place: A.J. Styles Staff Comments: "Not only was he involved with two high-profile five-star matches (the 3-way with AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels, along with the now-famous battle with Kenta Kobashi), but he proved that there isn't a particular physical format that a wrestler must follow in order to be successful. Does he look like Chris Masters? Nope. But fans have taken to him due to both his grounded & high-flying style. He is the wrestler's template as we head into 2006." - ZAH "Samoa Joe will obviously be on top of everyone's list in 2005. He's been all over and blew away the audience and his peers everywhere he went. He's also got the old school mentality to give 120% whether in front of 10,000 people or 100. He overcame an atrocious physical aspect and the stigma of being Samoan to become the most feared and respected newcomer wrestler today. Credible and loveable - he made stretch-marks look cool." - Celian Varini (WWE Pay-Per-Views) "The man has had the best matches of the year in any promotion. Between his ROh and TNA matches, you have not heard anyone say that he hasn't delivered above expectations. " - Matt Dawgs "Few wrestlers meant more to a promotion than Joe meant to ROH as they ramped up their schedule in '05, and at the same time Joe entered TNA and became a key piece of their X Division puzzle in a matter of months. Joe is able to vary his style and have a good match in so many different styles rather than sticking to a set routine; also, Joe is versatile in his character, able to be a strong babyface in ROH and also play a strong heel in TNA. " - Mallory Mahling "He has had a great year in TNA, 2006 is looking to be better. Joe re-kindled my dying interest in wrestling, as did TNA which I consider the Promotion of the Year. It's nice to be able to vote for that again." - Dave Embrey (Byte This) "It's been a long time since someone with this much hype has come along and actually lived up to it. He's been involved in at least three matches this year that could easily be considered Match of the Year." - Mike Nicolau (Raw AM)
