Insanity Readers and Staff Choose: 2006's Match of The Year...
By World Wrestling Insanity's Readers & Staff
So what was the match that had everyone jumping up and down in '06? Our readers and writers had some different ideas.
Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle
(Turning Point) ![]() 2nd Place: L.A.X. vs. Styles and Daniels (Bound For Glory)
3rd Place: (Tie) Undertaker vs. Angle (Unforgiven), Edge vs. Mick Foley (WrestleMania 22) Reader Comments: "This match was awesome from start to finish not only because of the two men working this match, but the atomsphere in the Impact Zone that night was electric. This match met the criteria that each match should following. 1.) Good workrate
2.) Awesome crowd reaction
3.) Great in-ring moves
4.) Good buildup
5.) Great back and forth in-ring story telling"
- Clifton Robinson "There really weren't that many great matches that stand out other than some of the LAX-Daniels/Styles matches. However, there was nothing like this one." - Trace Armstrong "A few weeks ago, I remember thinking to myself that there had been no standout matches of 2006. The LAX vs Styles/Daniels feud had brought memorable matches, but none that would be remembered for years to come. But then, just like last year, Joe and Angle came through, this time against each other, and had a match that will never be forgotten. Their underwhelming first encounter was now a thing of the past, and the match became one of the main highlights in the short history of TNA." - Blair Tyler But wait, now it's time for.... 2006 Insanity Staff's Choice for Match of the Year Blood Generation vs. Do Fixer
(ROH Supercard of Honor) ![]() 2nd Place: Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle (Turning Point)
3rd Place: L.A.X. vs. Styles and Daniels (Bound For Glory) "If there was ever a match that personified "wrestling" in its battle against "sports entertainment", this would be it. In fact, this match actually blended the best of both worlds in a way that was super-exciting to watch. The match itself had six relative unknowns (at least in North America) in a performance that had every single person in attendance leap to their feet once the 3-count was completed. It wouldn't have mattered who had won in that match...the crowd was rabid at the finish and popped as big as any crowd this year. I actually found myself jumping out of my chair a bit while watching it. I've watched it four times since and it has yet to lose its luster.
While there have been many great matches during the year, this one absolutely stands out for me. ****3/4." - ZAH
"Once again, I am going to sing the ROH praise. Really, if you are a wrestling fan and are only in tune with WWE and TNA, you need to do yourself a favor and go well out of your way to see this match. No North American match in the US this year is better than this match. I promise you. Even if you are low on cash, I ask you to save some money and buy this dvd from ROH. Instead of having two cups of coffee a day, have one a day until you can save that extra loot and get a copy of it. Borrow it if you can. I've never seen any Dragon's Gate promotion matches other than this one (which took place in a Ring of Honor show) but I am curious now to see other ones because of this match. Purely amazing." - Matt Dawgs
