By World Wrestling Insanity's Readers & Staff Dec 24, 2008 - 7:25 AM

For some, the shock was mixed with overwhelming happiness.  Considering last year's "most shocking moment," we couldn't have hoped for a better winner this year.  Everyone agreed on this one...

2008's Most Shocking Moment is...

"CM Punk cashes in his Money in the Bank title shot and becomes WWE World Heavyweight Champion for longer than one day: Some people may have seen it coming, but I define shocking as causing me to jump up from the couch and scream and call my friends on the phone to tell them about it. This was that moment. I did not expect it at all, and was blown away that it actually happened. Him winning the title was one thing, but keeping it for as long as he did, regardless of the circumstances of his matches and victories, was another."
- Drowgoddess

"For a guy who doesn't fit the WWE mold of being a 300 pound muscle freak, Punk's winning of the title was a shock to some. It wasn't so much that he got the title run, but after winning the Money in the Bank shot, he didn't seem to becoming a main event mainstay for WWE. Then it all changed when he cashed in his shot. He retained against JBL and Batista before getting attacked by Randy Orton, allowing Y2J to win the title at Unforgiven "
- Lionheart (Ernie)

"I almost fell over when I saw it happen. What else could it be?"
- Chris Hageman

"Never in a million years would I think that the WWE would actually put the title on Punk. When and how it happened was earth shattering and if Jeff Hardy wasn't around, Punk would be the biggest face in WWE.. "

Staff Comments:

" There are very few "Holy sh*t" moments anymore in wrestling, and this was one of them. Here you had two World Champions on SmackDown, and none of Raw, and in the course of 20 minutes, the entire landscape of Raw changed significantly. Granted, his title reign wasn't anything special in itself, but the way he got there was fantastic."
- Canadian Bulldog

"Umm…Punk was World champion in 2008. Do I really need to say more?"
- ZAH

" 2008 was a great year for WWE fans and Punk’s win epitomized the reasons why- new faces getting major pushes and the fans responding with heartfelt appreciation.   Punk’s win was a shocker and it had me on the edge of my seat screaming at the television.   That’s the reaction wrestling fans crave and they got it in spades in 2008.   While some people lamented Punk’s loss, he’s solidly established as a top star and the fact he stands out on a talent packed RAW is even more impressive."
- Mike Rickard

" I just kept thinking they wouldn’t pull the trigger when Punk came down the aisle after Batista’s slaughter of Edge on that June night. One GTS, and three seconds later, CM Punk had become WWE’s World champion. As someone who’s followed Punk’s career for so many years, this is a moment right there with Bret Hart’s, Eddie Guerrero’s, and even Chris Benoit’s culmination of becoming a World champion in a company where you’d never think they’d have a chance of winning such a prestigious honor. Even though the booking after Punk’s win is debatable, it doesn’t take away from that glorious moment of Punk pumping the big gold belt in the air for the first time."
- James Bullock (ROHbot Report)
