James Guttman on The Benoit Murder-Suicide and Where We Go From Here

By James Guttman

...

For the last few weeks, I've been asked about the Vince McMahon storyline. Casual fans, non-fans, and the rest have all called to ask me if the WWE Chairman was dead. I told them all the same thing.

"It's not real."

That was the last few weeks. Tonight, I got another phone call. This one was from a friend who wanted to know about the Chris Benoit situation. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell him it wasn't real. I had to tell him it was. I had to tell him it wasn't a storyline.

WWE.com has just updated their site and now it all seems to be a forgone conclusion that this situation is a bad one. The article (which can be found here: Benoit's death part of a double murder-suicide) states that Benoit sent "several curious text messages" which prompted concerned friends to contact management. The police were then called and the bodies were discovered. The article goes on to say, " WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday…WWE.com has further information relating to both the investigation and the cause of death, but the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has requested that WWE.com not release any additional details at this time."

You'd think that the last few hours would be enough to let it all sink in, but it's not. While I know it's real, I still can't help but wish it wasn't. After initial reports came out, I called different people to inquire about it. I kept waiting for someone to tell me it was all a joke. Maybe it was part of the Vince McMahon story. Maybe it was just a delusion. How could this be? It couldn't have happened.

But it did. Now we all have to look at the situation we're in and wonder…where do we go from here?

I did an audio about today's horrible news with ZAH and Matt Dawgs over on ClubWWI. In it, I said that I hoped fans who enjoyed Chris's work are still able to watch him. The only way I've been able to meet different personalities in the wrestling business and still be able to enjoy them on television is to know that their characters differ from them as people. You almost have to accept that they’re two people. There's one person you see on TV and one person who goes home at night. No matter how long you watch someone on television, you'll never know who they truly are or what personal issues they're battling…unless they want you to.

So there's my big advice. Separate Chris Benoit - The Person from Chris Benoit -The Wrestler and enjoy the old DVDs of his matches. Case solved.

Now, once you figure out how to do that, let me know.

It's easier said than done and, if all this turns out to be completely true, I can completely understand the thoughts of those who would wish to write him off and never again hear about his legacy. This whole thing is a tough situation to comprehend and many of us will never be able to wrap our heads around it. That's just a fact.

That said, remember that by ignoring the situation, you're not just forgetting about Chris Benoit. You're forgetting about Nancy Benoit and Daniel too. Before we start debating whether or not we should put out a Rabid Wolverine Memorial DVD, let's bow our heads for them. With all the focus on what happened and whether or not we should feel sadness over Chris' death, let's not forget that there's two other people who deserve our thoughts at this time. There's no debate on this. A seven year old boy has died. That's a tragedy in every case - no matter the circumstances.

As for tonight's show, I think WWE handled the situation as best they could. As I mentioned in the audio, Vince McMahon's first instincts are usually good. He has a way of handling tragedy with class and decorum. It's once he lets time go by that things start to get a little nutty, but his first responses always seem to be right. Tonight was no exception.

To all the readers of WorldWrestlingInsanity.com, we send our deepest condolences. As fans of professional wrestling, you take these men and women into your lives and look to them for entertainment. They're an escape from real life. When something so real rips into our fantasy wrestling world, it can be pretty horrible. Everyone here at the site shares in your sadness over the tragic circumstances of today. Our thoughts also go out to the extended Benoit Family and all of Chris, Daniel, and Nancy's friends. We can't even begin to understand the pain that you must be feeling.

It was a shocking and horrible moment. Many of us will never forget where we were when we heard the news on June 25th, 2007. May Chris, Daniel, and Nancy rest in peace.
