JG's Retro Column: Raising Kane - Filling Logics Holes In The Big Red Machine's Life

I hate inconsistencies.   I always have.   The only way to make your way through them in the world of professional wrestling is to try to explain them.

This past Monday, WWE went full steam ahead on Operation Rebuild Kane.   A sit-down interview with Jim Ross showcased a stunning revelation that the Big Red Machine is not burned.   But that explanation brought with it new holes to fill in.   So let's do this.   Let's piece together the life and times of a man called Kane and think of how everything in his life could be possible when everything seems so damn contradictory.

Undertaker sets fire to his childhood home with his parents and younger brother, Kane, inside.   The wreckage from the fire is so intense that it's nearly impossible to recognize any of the charred remains.   Officials assume that Kane has burnt to death like his parents.

Fearing that the young Red Machine will be placed into foster care, his secret birth father, Paul Bearer, decides to raise the boy as his own.   However Bearer's questionable past and unwillingness to step forward with his affair, causing a scandal in the town and angering the arson-setting Taker, forces him to keep his son's existence a secret.   Bearer keeps the boy locked away and tells him that he's horribly disfigured.   Despite obviously having no burns, Kane comes to accept his appearance as that of a freak.   It's the only reality he knows from a young age.

To show his son that he genuinely cares about his well-being, Paul takes him to out-of-state doctors for evaluation.   However he cautions him not to remove his mask.   The doctors, having met Bearer, are skeptical of the injuries.   They suspect that the boy's father may be a crackpot and push Kane to remove his mask so as that they can assess the damage.   Out of fear, he refuses and lashes out.

As the young Red Machine gets older, Paul begins to manage the Undertaker in the WWF.   Seeing the success of the Taker, Bearer realizes that his own offspring may have some of the genes that made his brother a superstar.   Paul makes brief exceptions to his rule and allows his son to leave the basement and train to become a professional wrestler.

Showing up at the school, Kane still refuses to remove his mask.   Since professional wrestlers with strange quirks are nothing new, the school allows it.   The Monster demonstrates great ability and for the first time ever is accepted by those around him.   This is where he meets Katie Vick.

Katie is the object of Kane's desire.   Being kept away from the outside world, the Machine latches on to the first sign of female interest.   The two become friends and she listens to him tell the tale of his horrible accident.   He refuses to remove the mask the entire time they know one another.

Deciding to cast his fears aside and let his true feelings be known, Kane makes a pass at Vick and is refused.   Unable to understand that she simply does not have any romantic interest in him, Kane believes that her rejections are due to his "burns."   He becomes irate and proceeds to end her life before satisfying himself with her prone corpse.

Having been trained adequately and growing in size each day, Kane becomes the apple of his father's eye.   On screen, Bearer begins to tire of the Undertaker, finally turning on him in a brutal and unexpected attack.   He proceeds to blackmail the Taker with the story of the fire and his brother's death, before finally screaming out that Kane is alive.   Undertaker is shocked.   That shock turns to anger when Kane makes his debut at Bad Blood, attacking him.

Prior to his debut, Bearer informs his son that the people are all against him.   He must make sure that no one sees his charred body.   Kane is covered almost entirely by his wrestling attire and Paul tells him to smear black face paint on under is mask, just in case he loses it.   Paul's rationale is that if a competitor does remove his mask, the paint would shield the audience from the disfigured face beneath.   It also serves to hide any skin around the eyes that can be seen through the holes.

As time progresses, Kane convinces himself that his body may be scarred but the worst part of him is his face.   He decides to change his outfit and show his burnt arms and chest to the world.   His outfit evolves, but his mask remains.   The world could deal with scarred limbs and such, but the face would be too much to bare.   Was the fact that although we could all see Kane's unburned flesh while he still continued his claims to be scarred our first glimpse of his mental issues?

Throughout his time in the promotion, many try to take his mask and get a glimpse of his face.   When Pat Patterson and Jerry Brisco do remove his mask and snap a photo, they are repulsed.   Rather than realizing that Kane's pre-match ritual involved the smearing of black face paint, they assume it is rotting flesh.   Having thought, like all of us, that Kane was burnt in a fire, everyone assumes the picture is that of a decaying accident victim rather than a sick man intent on keeping his "scars" hidden underneath make-up.

He confides to X-Pac that his entire body is burnt.   His former friend, though never seeing it, tells his former manager Torri and all the fans that it is true.   Having had a strictly professional relationship with Torri, despite innuendo to the contrary, she too believes that Kane's groin is deep fried.

When Kane finally loses his mask on Raw, we see what he looked like without it.   With the black face paint smeared following his match with Triple H, Kane looks right into the camera.   We all see the monster and immediately react the way Patterson and Brisco did.   We too assume it is scars.   But to Kane, the scars are hidden beneath.   He shaves his head and forgoes the face paint from that point on.   He wants the crowd to get a good look at the freak  he believes himself to be.

There you go - Kane in a nutshell.   I'm not saying that this is what happened, I'm just saying that this could be what happened.   I'm sure WWE will do something different.   You know, like nothing.

Oh and the voice box thing?   He just did that for fun.
