The Jamie Kennedy Experiment: The Jim Ross-TNA Situation and Oh Oh O'Haire

The more and more I follow the world of professional wrestling, the more and more apparent it becomes just how bizarre a world it really is. When I was younger, I looked up to most of these superhuman men and woman as heroes. I simply figured they would all get along with one another and be perfect people. Looking back on those views, they are extremely wide of the mark and it's for one simple reason pro wrestlers are just like you and me, only they have an unbelievable amount of talent for entertaining and putting their bodies through hell.

Hello everybody and welcome to this weeks edition of the Jamie Kennedy Experiment. I got some nice feedback on my last column, which was really pretty nice and unexpected! This weeks edition is back to that old familiar sting of random musings regarding titbits of news floating around the wrestling universe. Let's jump right in and see if I even get past the first item of news! (I like to ramble..)

Sean O' Haire Arrested!

Now normally I wouldn't really like to entertain this kinda news but apparently (and I stress 'apparently') ex WCW and WWE performer Sean O' Haire has been incarcerated by police authorities for beating up his girlfriend. The former “Natural Born Thriller” supposedly became very violent and aggressive towards his ladychum which led to her calling in the cops. The reason I wanted to include this was because I really wanted to talk about Mr. O'Haire's talents within the squared circle. Being the fan of World Championship Wrestling like I was, and I say fan when I could so easily have said 'masochist', my attention was stirred when a group of young, good looking dudes made there way onto my TV in the early summer of 2000 to form the faction known as the “Natural Born Thrillers”. Of course, the idea behind this was a stable of up and coming wrestlers which were theoretically the future of WCW. To be completely fair, the televisual product being put out by the promotion at this point in time was pretty much akin to dipping your sexybits in honey and dangling them over a bear bit but I digress the “Thrillers” gave us some nice matches and moments to take home with us in that last year of WCW. They really were one of the only reasons why I continued to get my good buddy to tape Nitro and Thunder for me each and every week and I looked forward to seeing the development of these guys both inside the ring and also as characters. Unfortunately, as we all know, WCW ceased to be as an independent company when Vince McMahon effectively purchased the entire North-American pro wrestling market and swallowed up a bunch of contracts belonging to WCW. This was however good news for Sean O' Haire as the hero of our tale was one of the contractual performers who was 'switched over'.

The man never really cut it in WWE and this has always surprised me. He has a good look, could potentially cut some nice promos, wasn't too shabby as a wrestler and also (towards the end of his run) had a sweet gimmick going on which involved him playing a character who encouraged others to break the law. The big guy even scored a televised alliance with a heel “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and managed a victory over Hulk Hogan, who was under a mask as “Mr. America”. The downward spiral towards the termination of his contract seemed to begin when Piper was released and in truth, O' Haire never really recovered from this. He pottered about on the 'C' show Velocity squashing enhancement talent before being released in the early part of 2004. I remember being pretty surprised that he had been let go as he was one of the brighter and more interesting parts of the roster at that time to me. I hadn't heard a lot about him since he was let go by Vince & Co. but it's 'nice' to see that he's still encouraging people to break the law. Well, encouraging HIMSELF anyway.

Jim Ross to TNA?

This is another wild rumour which has been flying around the wrestling press for the past week or so and admittedly, it is really interesting. Jim “J.R” Ross has been the main voice of World Wrestling Entertainment for many years now and whereas the promotion has often tried to replace him with a younger, more fashionable model, he has always ended up being brought back to the announce booth. The promotions latest 'rib' for the guy was his drafting from Monday Night RAW to Friday Night Smackdown, a move which apparently embarrassed the master of the 'slobberknocker'.

Personally, I've really never understood why the company has went out of its way to humiliate the guy and undermine his credibility when he is clearly the most talented pro wrestling play-by-play man in the modern era. His ability to help viewers understand match stipulations and his insistence on putting over the talent in the ring has always clicked with the WWF/WWE audience.

Indeed, I'm saying all of this without actually knowing if there is any real malice behind any of the WWE offices actions whatsoever. As I've said many times before, I am not behind that curtain and therefore know little to absolutely nothing in terms of whether or not these stories are fact or fiction. The fact is, there are a lot of people involved in the wrestling industry who speculate Ross will up sticks and leave the 'E' for TNA wrestling come the end of this year when his contract runs up. This writer can only go by what the man himself has said recently on his very own website..

"It's just more gossip. I am of the mindset that I will end my career in WWE."

I think that speaks for itself. How's that for squashing a nasty little rumour!?

It would be extremely interesting if something did come out of this however and “Good ol' JR” made the hop, skip and jump from Stamford to Orlando come the end of this calendar year, certainly for us fans of both companies. It could only be a boost for TNA if they managed to prize away the voice of the WWE for this generation. It has to be asked however, what would become of Mike Tenay if the switch did go ahead? Tenay has been the voice of his own respective employer since its inception into the wrestling universe and would feel rightly aggrieved if the company he has worked so hard for suddenly decided to bump him off in favour of yet another guy from WWE. I guess all we can do is wait and find out! One thing's for sure, I'll be keeping a beady eye on things.

That's all for this one but I shall return with more of my mindless prattle for you all to chill out to, cheeseburger in hand, next week. Don't forget to check out this weeks WWE Superstars TV report! TAKE IT HOME!
