Mallory Looks at "Celebrity Rehab," Chyna Doll, and the Ultimate Trainwreck

By Mallory Mahling

...

If you've watched any of VH-1's celebreality shows, you know they specialize in turning celebrity train wrecks into performance art. There is something about a celebrity behaving badly that keeps viewers coming back for more, and VH-1 keeps cranking them out. Whoops, poor choice of words. Nonetheless, since VH-1 has gotten so much mileage out the drunken escapades of some very fragile stars, it seems only fair that they put them into rehab.

VH-1 debuted the ultimate train wreck last week with "Celebrity Rehab." Don't let the word "rehab" fool you, though. It isn't one of those Lindsay Lohan resort-style rehab facilities. Dr. Drew Pinsky's Pasadena Recovery Center looks very much like a drab rest home.

Former wrestler and current actress--her words--Chyna was among the luminaries checking in. She was joined by Jeff Conaway, Brigitte Nielsen, Jessica Sierra, Seth "Shifty" Binzer, Jamiee Foxworth and Daniel Baldwin.

In the first episode, Chyna was the only one who seemed to be clean and sober. During her voice-over interview, she alluded to the prevalence of drugs in the wrestling business and said most of her life had been a horror movie. When asked why she was there by Dr. Drew, she claimed she didn't know.

Okey dokey.

Most viewers could answer that question for her. We've watched Chyna Doll--in altered states--be exploited on camera during two stints in the "Surreal Life" Clown House. The same goes for her buddy Brigitte Nielsen.

Conaway and Baldwin are former participants on VH-1's "Celebrity Fit Club" where they put themselves on unauthorized "liquid" diets, to the consternation of the panel of professionals overseeing the weight-loss program.

The first episode centered around Conaway, who was pathetic. There is simply no other word for it. He was alternately incoherent, mumbling, dozing off and crying. There is one other thing an addictive lifestyle does for a person.  It makes them look way older than their years. Former heartthrob Jeff is in in his 50's and looked at least decade older. Perhaps this will be a wake-up call for him and for the others.

After watching the first episode and expecting the worst, "Celebrity Rehab" seems more like a public service than a cheesy exploitation show. How can anyone watching Jeff Conaway at the very bottom of his personal barrel think that a lifestyle of drugs and alcohol is in any way attractive?

So will I watch more of "Celebrity Rehab"? Sure, who doesn't like a good train wreck?

Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
