Mallory's Look at a Tale of Two Lindas and a Shonie
By Mallory Mahling
Linda McMahon and Linda Hogan have both been in the press this week. Linda McMahon because she intends to run for the U.S. Senate. And Linda Hogan for less lofty pursuits. First, I think Linda McMahon would make a fine senator. For many years, she has headed a publicly-traded company that has weathered many a storm. Fortunately for her candidacy, she has played a fairly minimal role when it comes to the wrestling end of the business. Politics is all about "the spin," anyway, and there is plenty of time to convince voters to disregard her connection to 'rasslin and accept her on her own merits, cracks about cage matches notwithstanding. Give her a chance! * * * Secondly, Linda Hogan was interviewed on one of those interchangable entertainment magazine shows last week. No real news coming out of it, but there was some frank talk about her relationship with Charlie the Boy Toy who is 30 years her junior. Oddly, right after discussing how distasteful daughter Brooke finds the Cougar-Cub romance, Linda said that if it became an issue in their mother-daughter relationship, Charlie would have to go. Well, obviously it is…and he hasn't. In any event, this is a relationship that may have a limited shelf life, since in 10 years, she'll be 60 and saggy. I'm just saying. * * * MMA personality Shonie Carter appeared on the syndicated "Judge Mathis Show" last week. Under his real name of Mearion Bickem, he was being sued by a gym for breach of contract. Each segment of the popular courtroom show lasts about 15 minutes, so Shonie had to talk fast in order to impress the judge. Shonie droned on and on, saying how he'd nearly choked out Floyd Mayweather, etc. Judge Mathis listened patiently for the most part. However, he didn't quite believe that Shonie had brought mixed martial arts to Japan. This caused Shonie to elaborate on his previous statement. Actually, a little more elaboration could have kept this case from ever coming to court, since Shoney doesn't seem to let details get in the way of a good story. Anyway, the plaintiff explained that he had contacted Carter to make an appearance at his gym for the sum of $900. The gym owner and Carter had communicated back and forth, and Shoney was eventually provided with a contract for the appearance and subsequently told the gym owner to begin publicizing the event. Communication broke down somewhere along the way, and Shonie never signed the contract although the gym owner considered that Carter had verbally committed to the appearance. (A verbal agreement is worth the paper it's written on, dontcha know.) Shonie scoffed that he'd ever agreed to make an appearance for $900 when his watch, alone, was worth $1,000. (I'm thinking sometimes a $900 payday looks pretty good.) Nonetheless, Shonie countersued for $2,500 for the time he'd blocked out on his schedule for the guest appearance at the gym. Judge Mathis could see right through that ploy and determined that Shonie had filled those dates and was out no money at all. Not surprisingly, both cases were dismissed. * * * Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
