Mallory's Thoughts On That Volcano: Raw Rises to the Occasion; McGruber Doesn't; and Will Snooki & The Situation Ever Be Guest Hosts?

By Mallory Mahling Apr 21, 2010 - 8:52 AM

Say what you will about WWE, but they can usually be counted on to rise to the occasion. This week they were faced with an unprecedented travel problem. Who in their wildest dreams would have expected a volcano in Iceland with an unpronounceable name to be an excuse for not making it to work. As excuses go, it certainly beats the classic "dog ate my homework" defense.

On short notice, and with a pay-per-view (Extreme Rules) coming up this Sunday, WWE put together a pretty decent show (with the exception of the guest hosts, which I'll get to in a minute).

It also provided an opportunity to throw some SmackDown superstars into the mix just a week prior to the annual draft. If the hope was that seeing CM Punk, Edge and Chris Jericho would have fans wishing for the return of these superstars to Raw, it worked. At least at my house.

Hopefully, the Raw superstars will be back home by next Monday, but a volcano blowing its top is even worse than Mister McMahon blowing his top, and a lot more unpredictable. In any case, travel safe!

That said, the upcoming draft is the perfect time to scrap the whole guest host concept. For all the times guest hosts have been successful (The Hoff), there have been many more dismal failures (like McGruber).

McGruber was offensive on so many levels. The childish peed-pants routine was bad enough. But that was tame compared to "wiring the building with explosives" and pretending to blow up R. Truth, which was completely insensitive, considering that Monday was the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. Surely it must have crossed someone's mind that to simulate a bombing on this occasion was nothing short of appalling.

If the purpose of guest hosts was cross promotion, there has got to be a better way to do it. I am really tired of seeing people who don't seem to have the first clue about wrestling trying to pretend that they do.

Who's next? Snooki and The Situation?

Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
