Mallory's Thoughts on Chris Jericho's Death-Defying Reality Show; and NXT and The Mea Culpa Episode

By Mallory Mahling Jun 23, 2010 - 8:00 AM

It's been easy to get burned out on WWE lately, so I wasn't too excited about their new show, NXT, when it debuted a few months ago. In fact, I skipped most of the first season.

Same old, same old, right?

Actually, no.

The first season had turned out to be a short one. Essentially, make your new stars, show them the ropes, and throw them into the deep end of the pool to see if they would sink or swim. At least it wasn't an endless process.

The small group was manageable, too. Rookies could develop their wrestling personas and let viewers get to know them individually.

That's where Season One broke down, in my opinion. There was too much heelish behavior, too much snarling, too much braggadoccio. When Season One wrapped up with a vicious brawl, I was ready to wash my hands of it.

Then on Monday night Raw, the Season One Bad Boys showed up in the ring again. Were they going to display more of their bad manners? Surprisingly, no. They were there to made amends.

And to lend realism to the moment, as each one stepped forward to say their piece and apologize, Michael Cole introduced him, sotto voce, so as not to break into the speech.  Nice touch.

But that is where the cumbaya moment ended.  By the end of the show they'd given Mr. McMahon far more hellacious bumps than someone his age should have taken.  Why?  Just because.

And what about Bryan Danielson?  Each of the Bad Boys had been given a contract, which left just the absent Danielson jobless. I certainly hope there's a surprise at the end of the road with Danielson's name on it. He's far too talented to fall victim to WWE's erratic rule making and enforcing.  Maybe one day we'll understand the reason.  Assuming there is one.

Have you seen Chris Jericho on the new ABC summer replacement show, "Downfall"? He's an excellent choice for emcee, as he's a natural at hosting game shows. That said, I just hope all the contestants make it out alive.

I have a fear of heights, which I suppose clouds my opinion, but if I were going to be on a silly game show, it certainly wouldn't be one that involved falling off a building. Who thought that was a good idea???

"Downfall" is on Tuesday nights on ABC. Check your local listings for time and channel.

Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
