Mallory's Thoughts on Competition Being Good for Business
As a wrestling fan, 2009 has been a year in which I was close to losing all enthusiasm for the product. And the continual stream of "guest hosts" very nearly killed any enjoyment that was left. Back in the day, I really enjoyed the weekly wrestling shows. Plus I was gullible enough to buy into most of the storylines. It didn't take too long to figure out what was what, but most of these "soaps" were enjoyable, if not always realistic. I've missed the glory days of Bret Hart, the Rock, Stone Cold, and the other larger-than-life characters. And I've missed Monday nights when WCW and WWE would give it their best effort in order to win the weekly ratings wars. Would we ever see those days again, given the state of a wrestling business that has become so uninspired? Apparently others missed it, too, and when the date of January 4, 2010, was announced as the night TNA and WWE would go head-to-head, one could almost hear the cheering over the Internet. As the details began to take shape, it became more and more exciting. With Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart in leading roles in this new ratings drama, the possibilities are endless. All they have to do is keep egos from getting in the way of a good thing. I would be willing to bet that Bret Hart and WWE will be drawing the bigger audience next Monday, simply because Hart has been out of the limelight for a number of years. Bret Hart fans will be tuning in to see the Excellence of Execution once again. There is something to be said for keeping a low profile. There are talented members of the Hart family who are already making names for themselves in WWE. With Uncle Bret in charge of the Hart Family, they could be a young faction to be reckoned with. A low profile is something that Hulk Hogan knows little about. He is on TV at every opportunity. If he were in the media a little less, there might be some curiosity about what he will bring to TNA. But if I look into my crystal ball, I can already see the lineup of old cronies that always come along with Hogan. Personally, I'd be more interested to see what TNA can deliver on its own, not what Hogan can bring with along with him. Same old, same old. So, which fed will come out on top next Monday? And will there be a second head-to-head ratings week? We'll know in just a few days. *********** Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
