I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but WWE just cannot get this "guest host" thing right. And silly me thinking that having a wrestler as the guest host would make a difference. But then maybe they should have picked a wrestler with a firmer grip on reality. To say Rowdy Roddy Piper was a bit on the loopy side Monday night would be an understatement.
The first three minutes of Piper on Raw went something like this:
The show opened with Roddy Piper and his guest, actor Luiz Guzman, in Piper's Pit.
Roddy said he was an artiste now, and told Guzman he was a chef. (No explanation as to why Guzman is now a chef --or why Roddy is an artiste. Are they going to cook something?)
Piper said he'd brought in Iron Chef Bobby Flay for Guzman. (Bobby Flay never showed up and this was the last we saw of Guzman for the rest of the show.)
Instead of the Iron Chef, the Iron Shiek came out babbling about Hulk Hogan. (I'm assuming this whole segment was about the Iron Shiek and Hogan, but they certainly picked a bizarre way to get to the nonsensical point.)
Call me fussy, but I like TV to make at least a
modicum
of sense.
As I mentioned in my Raw recap, at this point --
three minutes into the show -- I'd have dearly loved to have changed the channel. I wonder how many people actually did change the channel? Starting the show with the weakest segment was not the wisest choice.
What is sad is that the show built up steam as it went into the second hour. The viewers that fled at the beginning of the show would have missed that.
Which brings me to my next point. Raw still doesn't know what it wants to be. They say they want to be a family-friendly variety show. However, the show ran overtime and didn't end until well into the 11:00 o'clock hour on the East Coast. At that time of night, youngsters should be sound asleep. Monday nights are school nights, for goodness sake.
Meanwhile, the Parade of Guest Hosts continues. Next week's guest host will be former Gov. Jesse Ventura. He's a strong leader, so maybe he can control the Crazy Train that Ozzy left behind, metaphorically speaking.
