Mallory's Thoughts on Raw: Stuck in a Rut
After sitting through yet another Monday night where wrestling played a supporting role to the hype for a corny movie, I pondered why it is that actors, comedians, and others who rely heavily on scripts perform so badly when they take on these guest host roles. Basically, the majority of the guest hosts are missing the ability to think on their feet. For all the disrespect heaped upon the "sport" of professional wrestling by outsiders, its stars are actually talented, well-rounded entertainers who deserve better than snarky critiques. Monday night's guest hosts were worse than usual. An aging TV heartthrob and a doofus of a "movie star" who added nothing to the show. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll be saying it again, I'm sick of having my time wasted on Monday nights. If the true intent of WWE is to provide family entertainment for younger viewers, then why does Raw come on past their bedtimes on school nights? The main event this week didn't even come on until the top of the third hour (11:00 Eastern Time). I rest my case. Call me cynical, but it occurred to me that the "family friendly" aspect of the programming might disappear as soon as the Connecticut elections have concluded? Just a thought. Wrestlers In Guest Host Roles WWE superstars frequently appear on TV programming and in movies where they are not called upon to wear spandex. It should be noted that when wrestlers appear on other shows, they do not embarrass themselves the way so many of the guest hosts from other walks of life have done when appearing on Raw. Having said that, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is starring in the new movie the "Tooth Fairy." Although he's costumed in spandex and fairy wings, I defy anyone to give The Rock any lip about that outfit. It's something only he could wear. One of the shows I've enjoyed most this season has been Jesse Ventura's "Conspiracy Theory" series on TRUTV. He and his team of researchers have tackled some weighty subjects, a few of which will scare you and some you'll probably want to learn more about. A new season of Bill Goldberg's "Bullrun" starts soon. More on that in a future column, but you can probably see Goldberg this weekend on Speed TV during the extensive coverage of the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction. Auction coverage will air through Sunday the 24th. Stone Cold Steve Austin will appear on "Chuck" next Monday night before Raw. The Miz and John Morrison both appeared on an episode of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader " that continues to be shown in syndication. Both did very well and are, indeed, smarter than a 5th grader. Check your local listings for time and channel. Haiti Relief Ironically, I had been reading Danielle Steele's "Amazing Grace" last week, a book with an earthquake at the heart of its plot. Ms. Steele had used a quote in her book that struck me as particularly appropriate to the current situation in Haiti: In each loss there is a gain. As in every gain there is a loss. And with each ending comes a new beginning. ~Shao Lin You can contribute to the relief effort in Haiti through the charity of your choice.
