Mallory's Thoughts on TNA's Hype-a-Palooza: What a Difference a Week Makes
After the three-ring circus that accompanied the January 4 Monday night wrestling shows, I found myself wondering how many people dialed by Spike TV Monday night looking for Hulk Hogan and/or TNA Impact. Will the casual viewers who may have been under the impression that TNA had moved to Monday nights bother to check back on Thursday night looking for Impact? TNA should keep in mind that fans can be fickle. Out of sight, out of mind, as the saying goes. It also made me wonder why TNA felt the need to trot out their entire playbook on a single night. It was overkill, to say the least. Would it not have been more prudent to introduce the surprises gradually and then heavily hype the following week's show? I'd be willing to bet that most viewers of last week's TNA hype-a-palooza could not rattle off even a fraction of the many surprises crammed into the January 4 show. As my mama always used to say, less is more. As for RAW, how would they follow up Bret Hart, an appearance 12 years in the waiting? This week's guest host was Mike Tyson, someone whose appeal is lost on me, but that's neither here nor there. Tyson is a big name and very likely pulled a decent rating. But after last week's guest host, Bret Hart, Tyson had some big shoes to fill. Next week's guest hosts, actors Don Johnson and Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite" fame, will have even bigger shoes to fill. Jon Heder is not exactly a household name, and it's been a while since Don Johnson has been one. However, if the topic of Mister McMahon and the "banned" Bret Hart comes up, I'll be happy. It's likely that we have not heard the last of the dueling wrestling feds, but if the feuding were done with a little finesse and on separate nights, there would be room enough for Hogan and TNA and Bret Hart and WWE. And that would make a lot of fans happy. Here's hoping. * * * Thanks for reading and see ya next week.
