The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Machine Guns Promise, Jacobs Too Graphic For PPV, Y2J, Matt Hughes - Humanitarian, UFC, and More

By Adam Barnowski
Oct 1, 2007 - 12:51 PM

...

Let’s go to work :

Item : September was one hell of a month for UFC fans

Two good free shows on Spike TV, The Ultimate Fighter returns, and a great PPV to top it all off. If you’re not watching the UFC right now. You are missing some exciting times. Here is a list of interesting UFC developments from the past month :

‘The Natural’ is still telling the greatest story of all time. Nate Quarry battles back from a thought to be career ending injury. The once feared Mirko Cro Cop gets beat up... again. Rampage unifies the Pride and UFC light heavyweight titles.

Bisping beats Hamill in a controversial decision that makes American fans nearly riot.

The once invincible Chuck Liddell loses… again. Nate Diaz puts on a wrestling clinic. Chris Leban proves you can lead with your jaw and still win fights. Despite looking nothing like a bad ass, Ken Florian keeps on winning. Diego Sanchez gets beat up… again. Forest Griffin definitively beats down, and then submits one of the greatest middleweight fighters of all time, as the “Pride curse” makes Mauricio ‘Shogun Hua’ - “just another victim.”

Also, the Ultimate Fighter is back on, and looks to be just as crazy as ever, with the return of (arguably) the shows best heel of all time – Matt “Bible Study” Hughes

It’s hard to keep up there’s so much exciting stuff going on! When is the last time that you got that feeling from any professional wrestling product?

The times are changing gang. For a consistently entertaining product, the smart money is on the UFC right now. This is an awesome time to be a fan of MMA in America.

Assessment : Very good indeed.

Item : Ring of Honor pushes the envelope ECW style with Jimmy Jacobs and The Age of the Fall

Anyone who read my live coverage of the Ring of Honor show in Detroit a few weeks ago read the following statement :

Watching Lacey at ringside (which I do for the entire match,) I can’t help thinking that she is bland and pedestrian (two words that I never thought I would use to describe her) as a face. Lacey desperately needs to go back to being a heel, and she should take Jimmy with her. Their heel act was over huge. As faces, they are boring.

Gabe Sapolski was either hanging on my every word, or many steps ahead of me (I’ll let you decide which is more likely.) As the very next night, at the PPV taping in Chicago, Lacy was back to being a tramp (thank god!) and Jimmy went back into full blood drinking sociopath mode, as he introduced Ring of Honor to - The Age of the Fall.

The whole incident (deemed “too graphic” for the PPV) is on the RoH video wire (www.rohwrestling.com) right now, complete with Jimmy drinking and spitting blood, while cutting one of the best promos of his career.

Assessment : Too early to understand exactly where they’re going with this, but it is yet another good step in the right direction from the best pro wrestling company in the states.

Item : TnA Impact moves to two hours, and the Motor City Machine Guns promise me that, once the new format is in place, my favorite tag team will be featured even more on TnA television.

Also at the September Ring of Honor show in Detroit, I conducted an exclusive interview with the greatest tag team of all time –

This “interview” consisted of me bumping into them in the parking lot, and then following them to their car, while shouting questions at them (James hasn’t sent me a press pass yet).

Anyway, I complemented my fellow Detroiters for consistently putting on the best three minutes of wrestling on television every week, as they get squashed in record time on Impact. When I inquired as to if TnA might ever actually push them (or just give them 7 or 8 minutes to be squashed,) Chris Sabin guaranteed me that with Impact going to two hours - the Motor City Machine Guns will be featured… more than they have been to date. Then Tn@lex yelled at him to get in the car, and the interview quickly ended.

True to Chris’ word, The Machine Guns actually picked up a WIN (almost unheard of) on Lance Hoyt & Jimmy Rave this week during their three minutes on Impact. They then got an extra 4 minutes of television time as Team 3 -“Oh my god are they fat and old”- D, beat the living tar out of them, burying them even deeper in the bottomless pit that TnA has dug for them.

Still, they got a whole 7 minutes of the ever so precious TV time this week.

So, you heard it here first - The Motor City Machine Guns to be squashed even more often on the new two hours of TnA Impact. By awesome teams such as – KQuick & a Guy Who Doesn’t Wrestle; Two Old Fat Guys Pretending to be the Dudley Boys; The Now Immobile Steiner Brothers; The Haven’t Been Over since 1995 Age Outlaws; Nobody Knows Who Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave Are; Rikishi… Really… F’ing Rikishi; Shark Boy and Any Random Wrestler; the list goes on and on… and on … and on…. and on….

Assessment : Impact is seriously ugly. The Machine Guns are the greatest team in the world right now, and not even they can save this terrible show. It’s just plain hard to watch. Moving to two hours is only going to make it more painful.

Item : WWE Raw - The Ayatollah Returns? Really? No Foolies?

Now that IS interesting.

Apparently the WWE’s obtuse “save_us.222” promo video that has been running recently contains a number of imbedded clues that fans believe point to the return of My Role Model, the Living Loophole, the Master of 1001 Holds (including - “Number 74 : The Arm Bar”), the one and only - Chris Jericho.

The clip references dates of important moments in his career, his old entrance music, and even goes so far as to actually spell out his name. I haven’t actually watched an episode of Monday Night Raw in a long time… I might actually tune in to see what My Role Model has to say.

Plus, he’s conveniently just in time to plug his new book.

Save us indeed.

Wrestling fans (what’s left of us) desperately need a man like Chris Jericho these days. Of course if he returns to RAW fulltime and gets over HUGE (which is likely) it seems like it’s probably only a matter of time before the Mighty Thor comes down from the heavens and buries Mr. Jericho, a-gain! So my guess is that he wont stay around for TOO long.

Assessment : Not just Good… Potentially the best thing that has happened to the WWE in quite a long time. Cross your fingers gang, your hero may be returning just in time to save the day.

Brief Item : Quote of the month

UFC legend Matt Hughes : “I could leave this sport and go work in a nursing home… I just really like helping people out.”

Matt Hughes… humanitarian.

Rival coach (and future opponent) Matt Serra’s response : “I hate this co**sucker. I can’t wait to fight him.”

Well said gentlemen.
