First up in April 2006 Angle/Orton/Mysterio were coming out of Wrestlemania with Mysterio's first world title win. Orton went into a downward spiral of losing matches, catching bad breaks, getting suspended, and having Kurt Angle "break his ankle". This got a decent amount of talk on the forums...

            I don't have a problem with the injury angle itself. I think it makes perfect sense. But WWE.com has just published a story that blends both kayfabe and real-life, and to me that just doesn't make sense. You're either kayfabe or you're not. Announcing the suspension to begin with was stupid, imo. There's no need to announce that your #1 heel on SmackDown is being suspended. Just run the injury angle, let it "leak" to the Internet the reasons why, and be done with it. This whole thing seems like a cluster**** to me.

It's ridiculous to use the "suspended because of unprofessional conduct" angle for on-air storyline purposes. I mean, when has anyone ever been suspended for unprofessional conduct in WWE storylines? Guys are setting people on fire, raping each other, dragging caskets across cemetaries, etc. Wrestling is filled with "unprofessional conduct".

Orton must have done something REALLY bad to warrant that suspension, storyline wise. Will they even tell us what he did?

See, this is what I try to tell everyone that I talk to about wrestling. WWE could care less about ECW, they never did, they never will. The only reason they keep it around was for a place to put lesser wrestlers, mixed in with some stars from other shows (Kane-ECW Champion, Smackdown Branded wrestler). I'm sure this will work out though, replacing Styles (one of the best announcers ever, next to JR and Mike Tenay), with a guy who can barely get the wrestlers names right will surely work, I mean it worked beautifully when they tried to replace JR...right? And Smackdown is just awesome with such great voice talent like Michael Cole and the Coach...right? I hope Styles lets his contract run out, and goes to TNA. Imagine a team of Mike Tenay and Joey Styles, that hack Don West can go back to QVC, and everyone's happy.

ECW died a long long time ago. that hasn't changed nor will it. ECW is just a name of a WWE brand. Notice it's been a long time since someone called it Extreme Championship Wrestling. They call it ECW.

As you suggested, maybe if he was more of a man and called it a day when his body told him to, a good chunk of his current problems wouldn't have happened.

The part about Foley is especially hilarious because Foley (first) retired in 2000 when the chairshot effects were getting to be too much. Sure, he comes back every once in a while (and does some ridiculous stuff to boot), but the fact that he's more retired than active shows he knew when to call it a day. Hulk obviously doesn't get that.

When picking Avatar of the Week, it’s important to make a choice based on something powerful, yet topical.  While I know by now it’s probably old news, I only get to do this once every three weeks so nah nah nah to you because THIS IS HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF A BULLY!

I don’t condone violence, yada yada all that is bad, you know you can only ‘talk it out’ with a person so much before you have to stand up for yourself.  And if that comes with a bit of physicality, so be it.  Personally, I always tried for the inverted atomic drop.  I mean it’s a knee right on the nuts right? 2011 WWE Hall of Fame inductee Canadian Bulldog set out to debunk 5 myths about wrestling "Good Old Days" and the subject of the lost art of the promo came up.

Squeaky: Interesting read. Good point on scripted promo's. I think they are unnecessary for the guys on top who prove they can talk, but absolutely necessary for 95% of the guys who are trying to find their character and get some traction.

Canadian Bulldog: Yeah.... I mean, Flair, Hogan, Austin, Rock, Cena.... any of those guys could cut a promo on a moment's notice. But there are so many who couldn't. Of course, it becomes a bit of a vicious circle -- if you don't learn how to cut your own promo, you never will...

Squeaky: That's why house shows were invented.

Mike Johns: I probably let guys go more than I really should have, at points, but there was method to madness behind that, most of the time. Part of it was because duh me had a sink or swim mentality when it came to teaching guys how to improv, and, hindsight... not always best for your product. Good for the talent, but not always for the fans. But most places I worked for were schools/camps who ran shows anyway, and encouraged it.  

The idea, and its something I actually agree with Vince Russo on when it comes to this sort of thing, is that you want to encourage your guys to get to a point when you don't need to script them, and can just run off of bullet points some 70% of the time. the other 30% is when you need someone to run a mic to stall for time, or, when you have a very specific thing you need to accomplish, or whatever else.

I was fortunate that, for the most part, I could get guys who only needed bullet points and the occasional line. Then again, once I saw some guys couldn't talk at all, I cut their mic time almost completely. Scripts can only save so much. And, I know this, for the record, because my one and only in-ring role saw me blow a promo something fierce. A fully scripted one, too.

Bundorama: Last year on The WWE's website, they actually had someone write under Alberto Del Rio's bio something to the effect of "Is this o.k.? This guy is supposed to be a big deal, right?", and it made it on The Bio Page. It was posted on this site by someone here, yet I don't remember them getting much if any shit about it. I wonder why....

Average: Daniel Bryan doing something was spoiled, too. I don't think it got much more than a chuckle now that you mention it.   Edit: Returning from "fired", I think.

Mike Johns: You missed how "a big deal fairly quick" has been a running joke on both the board and the main site since ADR's debut, then.   It was said in virtually every other post here circa the Royal Rumble.   I've made mention of it a few times. AW and Matt Dawgs have. I think JG's even snuck it into a few of his audios.   We made a HUGE deal of it at the time. I posted the pic on the main site. I believe Matt Dawgs did as well.   I honestly love how people reach for bias on an opinion site. Especially considering the things I've said here on both the boards and the main site concerning WWE's hiring practices and their developmental system.   The other running joke here. That we're somehow pro WWE despite being founded on a book that basically declared H as a cancer upon the business.

And just because this is an opinion site doesn't mean bias doesn't exist, when it so clearly does. And I'm not just coming down on this site, either. It's actually one of the better one's/if not the best. I'm just pointing out the blatant double standards that exists between the majority of The I.W.C. when it comes to their views on the 2 companies. And least from what I've seen....

If it means anything to you M.J., I think your one of the more impartial people here....

Mike Johns: We're not required to be, or even supposed to be, impartial. It's a site of opinions and commentary. we're not news. Expecting impartiality here is like expecting gold to come out of people's butts - not going to happen.

In other words - we're kind of supposed to be biased. You want impartiality, check a news site, and complain about their bias. Don't go knocking the site who's entire purpose is to present opinions.

I just think it's hypocritical for some people to bash one company for one thing, then have the other company do the same thing/something very similar and either have it glossed over, or not care. That has nothing to do with this being an opinion site or not. In fact, this very topic was talked about not that long ago in a TNA Thread....

Mike Johns: Thus, the "reaching for bias". Seriously, just because you missed the meme that was ADR being a big deal fairly quick doesn't mean it never happened. Personally, I think it's hypocritical to bash people unfairly without empirical evidence based on the perception of something that isn't there. The only bias or hypocrisy you see is the one you want to see.

I devoted an entire audio to Michael Cole's "f" slur on Twitter. I devoted much less to Borash.

The Alberto thing was a big deal too. So much, that people still joke about it to this day - whereas I think RVD's shirt thing won't be remembered long. I also devoted a big part of an audio to it and maybe something on the main page.

The reason it seems like things like this are discussed more in TNA than WWE is because TNA makes a ton less news than WWE. So even if the two get equal coverage on the boards, it might not seem that way since WWE has a steady stream of postings and TNA does not.

I'm curious why people think a bias exists though. Totally serious too. Is it that you think TNA makes good decisions that they don't get credit for? Is it that you think bad WWE decisions don't get the press that bad TNA ones do? Is it that you think the two companies are very similar and aren't covered that way?  

Honestly, none of those things are the case. WWE gets slammed by us for bad choices. I know it's been a few years since the books came out but Shane McMahon still hates us. Plus, the name of the site was spawned as a mocking slap at WWE.

There's very little TNA coverage on the site because that's the way things washed out reader-wise. I never really subscribed to the theory of covering all things wrestling even if no one is reading. That's why we rarely - if ever - do real times of Indy shows or things people might not care about. We've seen an increase in TNA readership since switching formats from real time to weekly. That said, WWE has far more opportunities to be raked over the coals for mistakes on the main page. The reason is because they not only generate more interest from readers but also do about 4 times the TV TNA does every week.

I went after TNA for doing the Jersey Shore bite-off. Most of my critiques cenetered around the characters they created with Robbie E and Cookie. I thought they were poorly done. WWE didn't do that with Snooki. They simply brought her in. Again, though, things that were similar between the two storylines that I didn't like - I pointed out. But I think some people look big picture instead of little. All they see is "TNA gets slammed for doing a Jersey Shore angle and WWE doesn't get it as bad." When, in reality, WWE didn't do some of the big things that I hated about TNA's angle. If they had, I'd point those out. You handle things on a case to case basis.

What I'm trying to say is that this isn't comparing apples to apples. It's case to case. Just because WWE has a slip up on Twitter and TNA does too doesn't meant they're the same exact situation. Just because WWE has a website error and TNA does, doesn't make them the same. Jersey Shore and so on. If you can think of a specific mistake WWE did that you feel we gave them a pass for, point it out. But I can't think of any. If you're trying to balance negative and positive coverage for the seperate acts of two different wrestling companies, then that'll never happen. They're two completely different entitites and you can't compare the two as if they are presenting the exact same product.
