The Light at the End of the Tunnel
These days, the big things seen on many wrestling sites are the negative traits of the figurehead of sports entertainment, World Wrestling Entertainment. Some may even suggest that their name is quite the pun, because it doesn't even entertain the fans anymore. But they are doing something right. I mean, how else can they bring the fans back every week?
Simple enough, it's not about if they are doing something right...now (even though they did put the belt on Adam Copeland...something I've hoped many times before)...it's that they did something right before that. Those moments are what we remember. Sometimes, the very hope that the WWE can re-create that magic oment is half the reason why people watch. What are those moments? That is what this column is all about. I am here to point at certain moments and say...this is why you should watch WWE. They can do that. They can make you enjoy watching wrestling. You can easily throw at me, "I can just watch TNA." No. Not the same. WWE has something TNA doesn't have. They have history, legacy, and dominance. TNA may be close to knocking WWE off the perch that WCW once did, but they are still far away from doing so. WWE has the value of history at its side and really can show it off when necessary. The best thing the WWE has done besides WWE 24/7 is their DVDs. Despite certain titles that waiver caution to the wind (Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior, ring a bell?), the WWE's reproduction of its library is, at the most, probably making most of the bucks anymore and that's the very reason why they are doing so. Every person has their moment...that day...that match...where they pointed to the screen and say This is why I watch wrestling...that is why I watch WWE. Let's start with mine. February 1988: Andre The Giant vs. Hulk Hogan for the WWF Title, The Main Event. I have a huge VHS and DVD collection that scare people on how much I am into wrestling, the WWF/WWE alone. The most valued piece of footage, no matter how it's stored, is the VHS where Andre the Giant took on Mr. 5 Moves and a Seisure Hogan for the WWF Title. With Ted DiBiase in Andre's corner, Andre seemed confident that he will do the job that he didn't do at Wrestlemania the year before. Hogan seemed to be on top of the ball...until the tide turned and Andre got a pin attempt. Hogan raised his shoulder at 2, but the referee kept counting and Andre was awarded the title. Andre then immediately handed the WWF Title to Mr. DiBiase, officially making him the WWF Champion. No matter how you salted the situation, Ted DiBiase was the WWF Champion. The error was that while Dave Hebner was supposed to referee the match, Dave's evil twin, Earl, was apparently filling in for Dave...who came out after the match to comfront the mirror-like person. Hogan grabbed both by their pretty little bow ties, threatened them, then walked away confused and conflicted. He then returened to clean house. The night ended when the last match of the night, involving the Hart Foundation, was cut off for the credits. This very event single-handedly set the tone for Wrestlemania 4, setting up the first tournament for the WWF Title. Simple moments...simple matches...or big moments or big matches. It doesn't matter. People have their moment where they were proud to be a WWF/WWE fan. That is the light at the end of the tunnel.
