Hot Threads: Matches You'll Never See Released on DVD, The Great Tyler Black Debate Rages On, and More

By Mike Johns Sep 2, 2010 - 11:21 AM

Did you know that World Wrestling Insanity has a Message Board? Yep. We’ve done got us one of them there fancy Message Boards, where you, the random, unnamed wrestling fan can go and vent your frustrations. From WWE’s Family Friendly Direction, to ROH’s Production issues, to whatever stupid stunt TNA is running with this week, the Insanity Message Boards is your place to speak your mind. You can also interact with fellow Insanity Readers, as well as the Insanity Staff. We even have an E-Fed, if you’re into that whole “Role-Playing” thing, so feel free to stop on by and join in the fun!

In the meantime though, here’s a taste of what you’re missing –

Hot Topic Folks who’ve been reading these updates since the beginning are likely aware of the name TheGreatWhiteDope by now, I would imagine.   Well, this past week, GWD started up a thread called Complete matches you'd like on a WWE DVD but won't ever get for whatever reason”, which got quite a bit of buzz from our members –

TheGreatWhiteDope
Watching some old highlight videos from various releases I've realized some matches I totally would like the complete match of won't ever be released on WWE DVD again. Besides all of Benoit's entire match collection......

Angle/Lesnar 60-minute iron man match

Others coming shortly...what about all of you?

Also where is the Iron Match DVD collection? WCW Iron man matches (Bash at the beach like 92/93 and others), WWE ones. That'd be some nice stuff.

shooting
I would love it if they released a WCW undercard DVD since the undercard in WCW was awesome. Maybe a timeline DVD, they start from the start of wrestling to the modern day and talk about the changes etc.

TheMaverickMJ
Well, we can pretty much kiss off a Best of Trish Stratus or Best of Lita sets. Even if they only did a 1 or 2 disc deal, half documentary, half matches. Or even a split DVD, similar to the one TNA did for Beer Money and the MCMG.

Aaron Wood
The Self Destruction of Vince Russo. The story of one man who, through sheer will and determination, made it his quest to tank as many wrestling promotions as he humanly could and make a buck doing it. Featuring over 3 discs of unique matches created from the mind of a former video rental store clerk who watched WAY too many b-movies. These matches are unique because they sucked so bad and/or were so damn complicated that they made no sense whatsoever.*
*Upcoming production in 2012 once WWE pick up the TNA library in the inevitable fire-sale, post bankruptcy...

A History of Cruiserweight/Lightheavyweight Title: While matches with Rey, Jericho, Guerrero and others would be a good selling point, the accompanying doc might actually have to address the title's nebulous end.

Vince McMahon: "Hornswaggle was the champ, then he was my son and...goodnight everybody."

Also, Best of Jakked (kidding, though on a slightly related subject I may have legitimately made a 'Best of Scotty Too Hotty' DVD for my mom thanks to old taped TV wrestling and some VHS ppvs.)

I'd LOVE a WCW undercard dvd set, that would be my first Wrestling related purchase since... umm, well since at least 12-15 years. I'm going to get ridiculed, but WCW saturday night was probably my fav show of the Monday Night War era.

Some guy has a YT account that has the complete and entire WCW history of Chris Jericho. It has everything from his debut, to the man of 1001 holds and his Malenko fued to the Greenburg bit, his trip to Library of Congress, doing the ring intro for a 10 man battle for Cruiser #1 contender... all kinds of good shit.

I'd love to see a set like that for the Filthy Animals, The Cat and Mortal Kombat rip offs, Norman Smiley with the the Hardcore title, Lance Storm and his stable, ... oh man.

Heck, I could watch a dvd full of Bobby Heenan one liners and Dusty Rhodes jibberish from Nitro too!

Tony Schivone: "Hacksaw was a D1 Champ in College"
Brain busts out laughing: "College?!? hahahaha, Duggan... College?!? College?!? hahahaha!"

RowdyRodimus
I'd like a complete WarGames set, I always loved those matches. Or maybe a Freebirds/Von Erich feud set with their matches and interviews with alternate commentary from Michael Hayes and Kevin Von Erich.

Theman6201
I'd love to see a Demolition DVD. I know they started as Road Warrior clones, but by the end, they were a pretty great tag team. It doesn't have to be a three-discer or anything, but I'd love to see something. I was a huge Demolition mark back in the day.

Rock N' Roll Express would be another good one.

We have a lot of singles DVDs but not so much of the tag teams, unless one member of the tag team goes on to singles greatness. (I. E. Brett Hart, Shawn Micheals.)

tharvey1
A Christian DVD would be awesome. He has just as much history as Edge does...minus the world title runs...and would probably be more entertaining

RYTMAN
Have they done anything w/the NWA tag team division yet? The Rock n' Roll Express vs. The Midnight express alone could make an awesome set.

ZAH
I was thinking the same thing.

Throw in some Fantastics, some Blanchard/Anderson, some Road Warriors, & even some Russians and you'll have some great stuff from the mid-80's.

Include some SST, some Freebirds, some Steiners, and even some Powers of Pain (pre-WWF) and you'll have some great stuff from the late 80's.

I'm a huge tag team fan...always have been. There's definitely a ton of stuff you could put on an old-school tag team dvd.

JohnnyRebel
We need a WCW anthology box set. That is all.

Hot Topic Then, there’s Tyler Black.   Ever since it was announced that Tyler had signed with WWE, hardly a day goes by without someone on the boards posting something about Tyler.   Whether it’s how ROH is writing him out, or where WWE could write him in, it seems that, at the moment, Tyler Black is the man of the hour on the Insanity Boards, so much so that no one topic can contain him.   So, to the best of my ability, I’m going to try and give you the best of the Tyler Black-related posts of the week.

Kira
Any thoughts on the chances of Black bringing the ROH World Title to WWE w/ him??? Perhaps prompting an ROH invasion to retrieve it?

What got me thinking about this was how over the Nexus invasion has been... and how they're having to cut that angle short due to injuries. Also, factoring in the current crop of ROHer's in WWE right now... I was thinking there might be some life/legs to an idea like this right now.

Aaron Wood
I would imagine less than zero chance. It's not even going to be a case of Black showing up on WWE TV the first second he gets. Indeed, if they are moving ahead with a 3rd NXT with him as the Kaval/Bryan level star on it, it wouldn't make sense for him to how up with a belt with less public recognition than the TNA Title. Also, in any case, it's likely he'll be in FCW for a period before he moves upas he learns to adjust his current style to fit with the WWE one.

I would place my last penny on him losing the title at the Sept. 11th iPPV show.

TheGreatWhiteDope
I still sit to the theory that he WINS that match, and the title is then vacated holding a tourney.

After the match I'd assume Homicide comes back and beats the hell out of Strong and Black to give the fans their feel good moment. Leading to finals of Tourney being Strong/Cide

TheMaverickMJ
Black is definately dropping the belt, as the HDNet tapings are in the can and have him coming out sans title. So he drops it between now and the end of September, when these tapings make air.

Still not 100% sold on ROH putting the belt on Roderick Strong at the moment, but barring a surprise or last-minute substitution, he's the likely next champ.

TheGreatWhiteDope
Here is to Daniels the night before the Strong match. Or Cornette puts Daniels and Richards into it that night because of Black's refusal to put the title on the line every time Cornette asks him too (the new storyline)

The Chosen 1
I will say that in this day and age, having someone come out with a belt because he supposedly will lose the title should almost be looked at both ways because I wouldn't put it past them to have done that to convince you he is going to lose only to have them shock you with a win. That said, no way he shows up with the belt in WWE... and no way ROH is invading anytime soon. WWE hasn't shown any interest in ROH the way they did ECW.

Plus, why would they do an invasion angle when they ALREADY have an invasion angle going on. Plus, what would they do? Feud with Michael Cole?

shooting
I can't see Black bring the ROH title with him or bring in some ROH guys with him. Plus with being a public traded company i can see them wasting a dollar on something they will have no return on.

The Chosen 1
See I just can't stop myself from asking WHY them being publicly traded would have any bearing on them not wanting to spend $ on something and not get anything in return.

Aaron Wood
The fact they're a public company has nothing to do with them not working with ROH, although the over-arching point of WWE not particularly selling many PPV buys or TV ratings off the idea of having ROH involvement on their shows holds true.

When they brought in ECW back in the 90's it was when it kinda behooved them to bring them on board. It's not as if the WWE show up in NYC and get loud ROH chants yelled at them, and they're not exactly running scared of TNA like they were WCW.

But yeah, the notion it's because it's traded on the markets doesn't have anything to do with it specifically.

TheMaverickMJ
WWE's not going to run an ROH invasion because no one knows who the hell ROH even is. Half the people HERE don't even really know what ROH is, let alone anyone watching WWE TV these days.

ROH =/= ECW. Not now. Not then. Not EVER. The Internet and the entire Entertainment market has changed DRASTICALLY since the days of tape-trading and underground music/video. There is no more "underground". That died a slow, painful, mind-numbingly long death in the 1990's with the mainstreaming of punk, grunge, and hip-hop and electronica. We live in an age where Tegan & Sara show up on Prime Time TV dramas, Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers have both hit the Billbord Top 100, Chumbawumba actually had a hit, people actually know who the hell Morrisey and Matthew Sweet are, every chowderhead under the sun can rap a verse of Rapper's Delight in their sleep, the Sex Pistols are in teh Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, NOFX is actually getting their due credit for (inadvertently) creating what we now call "Pop Punk", KRS-One can have a wrestling finisher named after him, and Marilyn Manson is considered Old Hat. Hell, even Lady GaGa actually has to work to get attention, and, even then, she's not considered nearly as weird as she would have been when Madonna and Marilyn Manson did it first!

The "underground" is dead, and replaced with a hundred little "scenes", each of which vary in degrees of Mainstream. Even Punk.

James Bullock
As MJ said (no need of going into depth because he did a great job), ECW was on another level when WWF worked with them. Actually, WWF was on a whole different level when they came together. WWF was struggling against WCW, and ECW was making noise, and had WWF fans in some of WWF's key markets (New York) talking more about this "underground" company than WWF. WWE doesn't have anything to gain by working with ROH in a situation like that of 1997. ROH probably wouldn't gain anything because most of their wrestlers would be jobbed out to WWE superstars. For goodness sakes, WWE had Tazz job out to Triple H when Tazz was employed by WWE. Tyler Black as ROH champ in WWE would most likely suffer the same fate.

Squeaky
I don't think they're putting the strap on Strong. Didn't he just have a really good TNA tryout match recently?

Besides, Strong just screams acceptable. The champ needs to be Daniels. Period. End of the end.

The Epitome of Man
One thing I do, yet don't understand about the WWE mindstate is the rebranding of so many standouts...

I understand you want to attribute a performers success to your company as much as you can... but at the same time, shouldn't WWE be presenting themselves like they're NBA/MLB/NFL, and anything else is simply a farm system of hopefuls looking to hit the "big leagues"?

Jordan, Peyton Manning, Stephen Strausberg, etc... don't get "rebranded" when they hit the professional ranks... so why are so many talented wrestlers saddled w/ such shitty rebranding/gimmicks in the "major" companies. Red Rooster, Texas Tornado, Scotty Goldman, and Austin Starr all immediately come to mind.

Aaron Wood
I don't see the real value in hyping someone as coming from another company, at least in this day and age. So Tyler Black came in from ROH. Who in the general audience is going to either give two flying shits or know what in the hell they were on about? It's one thing to say someone like Kaval or Daniel Bryan worked for yars all over the world and show them with puro belts and such, but beyond that, it's rather redundant

nelsolo
Not to mention WWE wanting to trademark and own in-ring names. If I was a wrestler and had a recognizable name in the indies, maybe I'd want to keep it away from WWE's legal system in case things don't work out...

exx
From WWE's point of view, they want to own the gimmicks because they are putting in the time marketing that character and if a wrestler leaves, another company shouldn't be able to benefit from that.

Also, there is a long standing history in wrestling of bookers not pushing gimmicks or ideas that they didn't come up with themselves.

This is just a taste of what you're missing on the Boards. Why don't you come by sometime and check it out for yourself, eh?   You never know when something you post may end up being the next Hot Thread.
