Couture's Championship Profiles: WWF Tag Team Champions Yokozuna and The British Bulldog

By James E. Couture May 17, 2007 - 10:46 AM

Folks, it's the innovator of violets, me, James E. Couture. Now, I've been staying the course for a while here at Profile HQ, doing some current champions and/or wacky/forgotten title reigns, but this time I'm going BOTH wacky AND forgotten. You won't find this reign in any record books, but I've seen the video tape and it's there, it's The British Bulldog and Yokozuna, Tag Team Champions!

The year was 1995 and the world was still reeling from Lex Luger's departure from WWE to WCW. His Allied Powers tag partner, The British Bulldog, had turned heel weeks earlier by viciously pushing Diesel into King Mabel. Luckily, WWE's upcoming DVD, "Lex Luger: Screw That Guy!" reveals that Bulldog also sent Luger packing in a non-televised Loser Leaves Town Match.

"Yeah, it's true. We wanted to give dem guys in Erie sumdin to remember. Dose innernet geeks'll say it did'n happen, but dey're geeks" -Brookly Brawler, giving his two worthless cents on "Lex Luger: Screw That Guy!", 2007

Riding high, at In Your House: The One in September, Bulldog continued his meteoric rise to the top, beating former WrestleMania main eventer Lawrence Taylor...wait, Bam Bam Bigelow.

Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice, Owen Hart and Yokozuna were reigning as Tag Team Champions, and on a collision course with more gold. At In Your House: The One I Mentioned Earlier, it was a one match triple header, with Diesel's WWE Title and Shawn Michaels' Intercontinental Title on the line against Owenzuna's Tag Title.

Then, for some reason, still undetermined, Owen Hart went missing the night of the event. Who the hell does he think he is, Sabu? Eitherway, would the World's Fattest Man be forced to forfeit the belts to the Dudes With Attitude?

Hell no. Interim WWE President Gorilla Monsoon gave Yokozuna a real pearl harbor job, and a beauty, allowing him to defend the titles solo or choose a partner. James E. Cornette, Yokozuna's english speaking manager, recruited another one of his charges: David Boy-Smith.

And so, by edict of the Gorilla, for one night only, we had new tag team champions. The British Bulldog, pound for pound the strongest man in the WWE, and Yokozuna, pounds for pounds the flubberiest. Sure, Bulldog didn't have a belt, but there's more to being a champion than having a title belt. Hell, any mark with more dollars than sense can get their own belt with engraved nameplate. Bulldog went out there and defended the Tag Titles that weren't even his to retain against the Dudes. It was all for naught, though, as Owen Hart showed up at the end of the match just in time to get pinned for his team after the ref was knocked out, no, blinded, no, just stupid.

Well, until TNA introduces it's revolutionary new concept match, the Clusterfudge, in which two singles matches take place in the same ring at the same time, with one ref calling both, I am, in fact, James E. Couture.
