I knew I recognised it when I heard it. You see, when they announced that Breaking Point was the new name for Unforgiven, I thought I had heard the name before in a wrestling context. And of course, you might already be a million miles ahead of me, but Breaking Point just happened to be the name of the band who did Rob Van Dam's entrance music! So, without beating around the bush, here's the video for "One Of A Kind"!
Anyway, check back at the top of the hour for the Real Time of Breaking Point. The PPV event, not the band.
Well, here we go! Just bear in mind that chances are I won't update until after each match unless there is a decent period of restholds, but keep checkign early & often!
We start with a video putting over the concept with a tessellated picture. We, naturally, focus on the matches that are actually submission matches. Seems like Undertaker & Punk are on top, which enhances the chances of a screwjob in that one, I think.
Nice set for the PPV tonight. Bunch of rings and some old-school Smackdown-like "glass shards" behind the screen.
Chris Jericho & Big Show vs. MVP & Mark Henry in a "Once Show & Jericho win, I wonder which pairing of African Americans will be next..." match for the Unified Tag Titles
The Champions head out first after Cole welcomes us to the show. No Jericho promo tonight in front of his Canadian bretheren. MVP comes out and he's modified his attire, cutting the arms out of it. And Henry's had an upgrade too as he has WSM on the back for World's Strongest Man. But notably, it's in the same style as the MVP on the back of MVP's clothing.
Anyway, sartorial notes aside, MVP & Jericho kick this one off, and I can't quite tell if they're behind Jericho or not, while Lawler immeidately loses it by claiming this match is a submission match, forcing Cole to correct him and for Lawler to back out of it. Jericho ducked right out of the ring to start and annoy everyone. Collar and elbow goes into the corner, resulting in a shoving match that MVP wins with punches and a hiptoss. Amateur takedown scores a 2 count. Porter works Jericho in the corner, but Jericho catches him with a shot, although he gets whipped off the ropes and caught with a drop toe hold. Neckbreaker scores a 2 count for the challengers. Mark Henry tags in, but Jericho scrambles away and tags in Big Show.
The behemoths circle a bit, and the crowd seems behind Big Show. The chanting would indicate this anyway. Collar and elbow goes nowhere. Show suckers Henry and whips him into the corner, but Henry catches a splash in the corner, and switches, laying in shots. Whip across and splash by Henry. Henry gets Show up for another bodyslam, but Jericho manages to cut that off, tripping Henry, allowing Show to get a 2 count on the press. Henry is taken into the heel corner, allowing Jericho to get a cheapshot in. He then tags in, laying in kicks. Henry shoves off, but Jericho is right back on him in the corner. Big Show tags back in, and whips Henry, but they clothesline each other down! Each side makes tags, and MVP jumps in and gives Jericho a throw and a back elbow. MVP floats over in the corner and continues to keep the upper hand. Facebuster off the knee leads to the BALLIN'~! elbow, but Jericho kicks out at a long 2. Jericho catches MVP with a Walls attempt, but Montel powers out. Big Show gets the blind tag and spears MVP out of his boots. Henry manages to rally the crowd for MVP, but Show has a headlock wrenched in. He clubs MVP on the back before tagging in Jericho. Jericho enjoys himself a little before locking in a chinlock.
MVP gets back up and out of it, and goes for a cradle, but only scores a 2 count. MVP scores with a clothesline and looked to tag Henry. However, Jericho JUST managed to cut MVP off an inch away from Henry. Jericho takes MVP into the corner and digs his boot into MVP's chest. MVP flips out of a hiptoss and he hits a DDT to put both men down. Standing 10 count.
Henry gets the tag (to a cheer) and he goes to work on Jericho. Jericho dives off the ropes, but Henry catches him and press slams him. Splash is broken up by Show. MVP is toss, but Henry gets rid of Show. Henry flattens Jericho, but Jericho got his foot on the rope before the three count. The Codebreaker was blocked and he tossed him over his head. ANd once again, Big Show appeared and hit the KO Punch to Henry while he was over by the ropes. Jericho into the cover for the three count as MVP wasn't quick enough to break it up.
WINNERS & STILL CHAMPIONS: Big Show & Chris Jericho
I am getting REALLY bored of that finish, but a decent enough match otherwise.
We jump backstage with Josh Matthews & Legacy. Are Legacy the underdogs in this match? Cody says it's not a match. It's a fight. One that can go anywhere. Sure, Cody & Ted aren't submission guys, but there are more variables in this one. Cody says the only underdogs have the initials DX. Ted says they will make DX tap out, as they represented the past while they represented the future. DX were like their own glowsticks. Fun and entertaining for a while, but they burn out, the glow died and you throw them away...
Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz in a "Where the was once a Morrison/Ziggler match, there is now this..." match for the US Title
The Miz is out first in this recently announced bout, as Cole notes it was announced on their mobile service. Unlike Jericho, Miz does grace us with a promo, and he gives us some French! JE SUIS LE MIZ ET JE SUIS AWESOME! Kofi comes out as Lawler puts over Miz's tweets. @aaron24wood and/or @clubwwi, by the way... Collar and elbow goes around the ring a bit, and despite his French skills, the crowd chant for Kofi. Another tie-up ends up in another corner. Miz gets him down with a side headlock. Kofi fights up, but gets downed again. Kofi goes for his leapfrogs, but Miz saw it coming, but the Skull Crushing Finlae was blocked into a rollup for 2. Kofi gets some shots in and gets a 2 count off of an uppercut. Jawbreaker by Miz is followed by a snap suplex. Kofi ducks a clothesline and gets a pair of crossbodies. Miz looks to toss Kofi out, but Kofi stops and hits a dropkick for a 2 count. In the corner, Kofi gets elevated to the apron and he heads up, but Miz cut him off, sending him crashing back down to the mat. Slingshot into the bottom rope, gets a 2 count. Knee to the back is followed by an arm & chinlock. Kingston fights out, but dives into a big boot. Long 2 count for Mizanin there. Miz with mounted punches and a running kick for a 2 count.
Back to the arm & chinlock. Kofi fights out with shots to the gut, but he runs into a flapjack. 2 count there for Le Miz. Stiff kick to the chest by Miz is followed by some choking in the ropes. Kingston fires back, but drops down, sending Miz out to the floor. Kofi teases diving out, but jumps to the apron, btu Miz is quick enough to sweep the legs out from under him. Back in for a pair of 2 counts. Suffice to say, Lawler's not on it tonight... Miz hits the corner clothesline, before heading up top. He comes off with a double axe-handle to the head for a long 2 count. Miz runs Kofi into the corner, but Kofi pulls him into it as he comes back in. Miz with kicks to the side, but Kofi suddenly fires back, leading them to trade kicks to "YAY/BOO" Kofi misses on, but Miz's finish was blocked again, and he hit a DDT for a close 2 count. Miz hit a backbreaker/Reverse DDT combo for another close 2 count. Miz's charge was blocked, and Kofi hit a leaping clothesline. The Boom Drop is countered by Miz, getting his knees up for a pinfall that scored a 2 count. Kofi & Miz trade pins. Kofi snaps off a Side Russian and hits the Boom Drop this time for a 2 count. Kofi heads up top now and gets a crossbody, but Miz rolls through for another close 2 count as Miz gets frustrated. Stungun into the top turnbuckle. Miz gets a rollup with tights for a 2 count. Miz pulls himself up, wondering what he had to do. The Reality Check is blocked, and Kofi hit Trouble In Paradise for the win!
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: Kofi Kingston
This was a fine little match, with Miz coming close on a number of occasions. I'd like to think there'll be better tonight, but it delivered way more than expected.
We head outside to see a statue and some water before thanking Lynard Skynard for not dying yet.
We jump back to Cole & Lawler, who hype the next match which is The Submissions Count Anywhere match. Yes, the first three matches tonight are RAW's three matches on this card. Who thought that RAW's announce team would be done and dusted before ECW called their one match.
We hit a nicely done hype video.
DeGeneration X vs. Legacy in a "HBK...Submissions...Montreal..." Submissions Count Anywhere match
Are you ready? Oddly enough, for Kliq guys, and HBK quite possibly making his return to Montreal after, well, Montreal, DX get a hell of an ovation. We even see a "Welcome To Canada" sign! DX get themselves a mic and HHH says that it sounded to him like the DX army was in the house. So, were they ready? ARE YOU READY??? Then for the thousand...yadda yadda yadda... They finally get a "You Screwed Bret" chant going, while DX are bent over, which gets HHH to bring it up, noting that it seems that some can't let it go, but to HHH personally, it was all Shawn's fault! HHH wasn't even there! But hey, otherwise, let's suck it! Oddly enough, not one mention of Bizarroworld here by Lawler. He really is having an off night now... Legacy finally make their way out.
I'll try and keep up. Gang war at the bell with HBK taking Cody and HHH with Ted. HHH gets to choking Ted while HBK dumps Cody. This allows DX to work over the legs of DiBiase first and then Cody as he came back in. We followed Shawn & Cody, but cut to see Ted's knees get dumped on an announce desk. HBK & Cody head into the crowd while HHH & Ted fight at ringside. However, we cut back to Cody & HBK as Ted jumps Shawn, with HHH following behind. HHH & Rhodes head up the steps followed by Michaels & Ted. HHH & Cody disappear to the concourse as HBK locks in a headlock over a handrail.. In the concourse, Cody is coming off worse against HHH while there's a crowd around, but Ted made the save, but he was followed by HBK. DX go for stereo Figgure Four Leglocks in the concourse! However, LEgacy both manages to get out of the submission, when Cody raked HBK's eyes and helps out Ted. A huge "OLE!" chant gets going with the fans there.
We head back into the arena down the stairs. Ted chokes Shawn with his boot on the steps. HHH throws up the X in the background while Cody & HBK slowly make their way down. HBK again goes for the front chinlock while we see HHH follow suit. We hit the ringside area again as HBK & Ted gets dumped over. Cody jumps in to hit some shots, but HHH follows and jabs Cody with a chair. HHH sets up Cody';s ankle in the chair and he locks in a sharpshooter THROUGH the chair! Meanwhile HBK puts in a Camel Clutch! However, it's before long that DiBiase makes the save. DiBiase takes HHH round the ring and whips Hunter into the steel steps. Ted & HHH hit the ring, with Dibiase laying in blows. However, HHH scores with the AA Spinebuster. HHH locks in the Corssface, but Rhodes saves. HBK gets in the ring, but Cody tosses him. However, HBK skins the cat and headscissors him out. Ted dumps him and Cody locks in a Gory Guerrero Special!
HHH knocks down Ted and saves Michaels. Cody gets dumped into the steps, seemingly leaving HHH & DiBiase. Hunter tells TD2 to suck it before stomping his head. A "Woo" chant goes up, so I'm guessing HBK just chopped Cody. We end up following them a bit as Cody gets thrown into some flight case before they head up the arena steps there. They get to the edge of the seating bank and have a slugfest, which Cody wins, knocking HBK down to some boxes below. We head over to see HHH looking over Shawn as Ted sees to Cody. HHH goes after Legacy on his own and sets for the Pedigree on the stage. It's borken up, but he does backdrop Ted on the stage before punching Cody to the backstage area. 1 on 1 now.
In the back, Cody is sent into some boxes, but Ted jumps in and lays in some blows. Legacy start to beat down HHH 2 on 1. We can hear the crowd cheering as Dibiase locks in the Million Dollar Dream, but HHH backs him into a pillar before giving Ted a spinebuster through the the catering table. Cody gets locked in a Crossface, but Ted gives HHH an ice-box upside the head, knocking him out cold! SEE WHAT I DID THERE! Cody gives HHH a chairshot, but get interrupted by HBK, despite the fact we stick with Hunter. We finally join Legacy as they work over HBK on the stage. Slam to HBK on the stage. Legacy take Michaels back towards the ring, beating him as they do it. They roll him back in the ring.
Shawn stirs however, blocking a corner charge, before tossing DiBiase, but Cody caught HBK and locked in an Ankle Lock! HBK made the ropes, but since they counted anywhere, it didn't matter. However, he fought off Dibiase & then kick off Rhodes. He backdrops DiBiase out and hits Sweet Chin Music on Cody as we see HHH stirring backstage. The crowd either chant "Triple H" or "We Want Bret". Same number of syllables. HBK eventually locks in the Figure Four again on Cody. But Ted makes the save. HBK gets dumped in the corner, but he sidesteps Cody. Legacy set for a Spike Piledriver, but HBK kicked Cody off the top to the floor and then downed DiBiase. HBK tuned the band, but Cody tripped him and crotched him on the ringpost. Rhodes punches HBKdrunk before hooking on a supposed Figure Four around the ringpost. Not the best you'll ever see, but it's an ood angle. Meanwhile, DiBiase locked in the Million Dollar Dream. However, we saw HHH trying to make it down to the ring. However, Shawn could take no more and tapped out!
WINNERS: Legacy!
Great match! Great story told here, and built on last month in making Cody & Ted STARS.
We cut backstage to see the leader of Legacy, Randy Orton, as Josh approached looking for a reaction to Legacy's win. Orton told Josh to take a seat. Josh re-asked his question. But Orton had no reaction. He knew they'd win and they won. Josh tried to follow up, but Orton said Josh said he'd ask one question, so was Josh one of those people who said one thing and did something else. John Cena said something. He said he was incapable of saying "I Quit". Randall couldn't understand how he knew he couldn't say those words. He can't be sure. Did Josh want to knwo what it was like to feel your bones shatter or your head bludgeoned but to make it go away by saying one thing? Is that what you want to know, Josh? Well, watch the match. Because Cena says one thing, but Orton would make him say something else. He was going to force an "I Quit" out of him. Great promo.
Hell In A Cell promo.
The Great Khali vs. Kane in a "Please Lord, don't let me get confused by Kane & Cane..." Singapore Cane match
We see bunches of canes set up at the ringposts. If this was a Russo-booked match, they'd have been on poles. Kane heads out first as we get our first taste of the legend that is Todd Grisham and his sidekick, JR. Khali & Runjin follow. Kane goes for a cane right away, but Khali cuts him off and works Kane in the corner. Big chop to Kane. Kane is sent into the corner, but he grabs a cane. However, Khali also gets one and we have a sword fight, which Khali wins, allowing him to give a few cane shots. However, on the outside, Kane took out the legs before laying in a few cane shots of his own. Kane lays in some more back in the ring, but Khali grabbed Kane's neck to get back in. Kane went wild on Khali again, focusing on the legs, before hitting a low dropkick for a 2 count. Kane locked in a keylock entwined in the cane, but Khali got up and went nuts on Kane with the cane. We see a closeup of some welts on Khali as Khali set for the overhand chop. Khali got a 2 count out of that one. Khali called for and locked on the Vice Grip, but Kane grabbed a Kane and swung behind him to break free.
Kane went up and instead of his clothesline, he hit a headshot with the cane for a 2 count. Kane called to finish, prompting Singh to hit a cane shot, but Kane didn't sell it. He choked at Runjin, but Khali gave him the overhand chop. Khali checked on Runjin, but Kane whacked him with the cane, hung him on the top rope and hit the chokeslam for the win.
WINNER: Kane
Not as bad as I expected. That said, Weren't good either. Nice chokeslam though.
Three matches to go. 90 minutes left of PPV time. Suffice to say, I think ECW is getting more than 8 seconds tonight.
We go backstage to Eve, who brings in CM Punk for a chat. We're moments away from his match against Taker. Punk said he had alreayd done a lot of talking, so he'd be brief. No one was giving him a chance tonight, but then again, no one gave him a chance in TLC, and look what happened. And then Punk got rid of Jeff. And then, Jeff goes and does what Punk has said he does. Suffice to say, you won't see Punk's mugshot all over the internet. Punk lives a clean life and living clean means good things happen. The power of being sXe beats the power of the UNdertaker.
The lights go out! Eve & Punk crap themselves. But hey, it's only Jimmy Wang Yang messing with ya. No hard feelings, Punky? NO, Jimmy, but you can have a headbutt and then knees to face for that. Punk returns to Eve to say that he's not afriad of Taker, but Taker should be afraid of him. And there was a reason why it wasn't Josh backstage...
Christian vs. William Regal in an "Anything over 9 seconds is an improvement" match for the ECW Title
We join Matthews & Matt Striker at ringside as we recap the feud to this point. Striker keeps saying "Master Regal". Thank God William's surname isn't "Bates". Striker reels off a bunch of nicknames for Christian as he comes out. Regal heads out with his heavies, Kozlov & Jackson. They seem to keep saying "Beasts" for those 2. Regal's Beasts, in fact. The trio stare a hole in Christian as TONY THE CHIM~! announces that Jackson & Kozlov are banned form ringside and they have to get to stepping now, or Regal forfeits. The pair get the "Na Na Na Na" treatment, although at least this gives Regal time to get his jacket off.
Striker noted the last major title change in this city was in 1997. I wonder which one that was. Christian goes for an early finish, but Regal blocked it. Regal rolled out an armwringer, but Cage held on to lock on a hammerlock. Christian got a sunset flip for a 1 count. Dropkick by Christian scored 2. Christian locked in a side headlock, but Regal got up and shoved off, sending Christian out. Christian was up quick though and came off the top with a crossbody for 2. Slaps in the corner by Christian. However, while on top, Regal knocked down Christian as we would take a break on TV. Striker claimed he was sayign "Master Regal" out of respect as Regal rammed Christian's chest off the apron before picking up a 2 count. Hangman's hold by Regal. Christian tried to power out and does so eventually, but their hands remained locked as Christian picked up a couple of nearfalls. Regal got a shot in and hit an exploder suplex. Regal put on a surfboard variant, bending Christian back to put on a chinlock. Christian was able to elbow out of it though. Springboard sunset flip was rolled through and Regal hit a knee to the face. He hit a couple more shots before picking up a 2 count.
Regal put on a Full Nelson. Christian got out, but Regal hit an overhead throw for 2. Regal locked in a modified headlock, but Christian got out. Euro uppercuts in the corner. Christian was put on the top, and Regal looked to join him, but Christian fought back and hit a tornado DDT for a 2 count.
Regal hit a nice forearm for a 2 count, as Matt Striker made a second Smiths reference by calling Regal "Johnny marr" who was their guitarist after saying "How Soon Is Now?" Christian looked to finish again, but this time it was blocked into the REGALPLEX! Haven't seen that in YEARS! If you haven't seen it before, its a combo of an Exploder and fisherman's suplex. As it goes though, this only brought a CLOSE 2 count and then seemed to spur on Christian as Striker AGAIN referenced Morrisey, with a solo album title. Christian headed up top, but jumped over Regal. He went up once again, but Regal moved and hit a senton for a 2 count. Regal hit some elbows in the corner, but Christian looked for the Killwistch again. That was blocked, but after Regal missed the running knee, Christian, at the fourth time of trying, hit the Killswitch for the win.
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: Christian
Wow. Great match.
Tomorrow night...Batista comes back with what could be a career-altering announcement. Well, it's either Smackdown or retirement. Kinda hoping it's not Smackdown... Also Trish is hosting and I believe Mallory Mahling will be back to cover RAW live.
We hit the ring again as Justin Roberts introduces Pat Patterson, who is, of course, French-Canadian, giving JR a chance to reel off a bunch of Montreal wrestling history.
Patterson said some stuff in French before saying he was proud to be the first IC champion, which is why he was proud to introduce...
Well, if it was Dolph Ziggler, he jumped the gun. Patterson knew who Dolph was, and Pat said he talked to a lot of people last night and Dolph wouldn't believe who asked about him... NOBODY! Only joking blondie. He was just having fun. Pat said Ziggler had a great future and had a lot of talent, and he could be IC Champion one day, so good luck to ya.
Mr. Ziggles asked for the microphone. First Bob Barker. Now, Pat Patterson. When did the Seniors take over? If Pat's here, who's watching those Golden Girls re-runs? Was Wilford Brimley busy? Doeds the retirement home know he's out? Hell, before he saw Pat come out, Dolph thought he was dead. And hey, Pat's looking good, the hair-piece even looks real! And hey, why are we wasting time on a fossil no-one remembers. A "Shut The F**k Up" chant got going. PG everybody. Ziggler said Pat was the first IC Champ. When was that the 1800's? Ziggler said he was just having a little fun with him. Pat was really a good guy. No, he was a great guy! And you know what Pat, you're a helluva guy! But Dolph knew what Pat was. A Coward. Ziggler jabbed Patterson in the gut. He went to leave but had other ideas. However, as Ziggler stalked over Patterson thinking about his next move, John Morrison ran out to make the save, causing Ziggler to duck out the ring and back up the ramp.
Well, my prediction of RAW being done before ECW didn't come to pass in the end, as their final match is up next. Cue hype video starting from Summerslam's clusterf**k.
Randy Orton vs. John Cena in a "How clever...a "Submission" match for the "Submission" PPV that is almost guarunteed not to end in an actual submission..." I Quit match for the WWE Heavyweight Title
Orton makes his slow way out to the ring first. Cole reminded us that McMahon had decreed that if anyone helped Randy tonight, Orton would be stripped of the title. Lillian gave it her last set of Main Event Introductions. Unless she does any in the next couple of weeks, that is.
Cena takes in the crowd reaction, which seems to be mixed to the point of inaudibility. The pair lock up hard and Cena goes to work early, hitting a belly to belly before taking Orton into the corner and hitting the Fisherman's suplex after whipping Orton across the corner. Randy reverses a whip and drop down on a shoulder tackle. Orton knocks Cena onto the RAW announce table. He pulls the Smackdown table apart and gets a monitor. Head shot with the TV. Well, Todd has nothing to watch the main event in now. I heard JR doesn't like to share. Orton gets back in the ring and waits to catch Cena crawling back in. He asks the ref to see if Cena quits (whcih he doesn't) before hitting the elevated DDT. Orotn grabbed a chair and set it up, teasing another RKO onto the chair, a la RAW on Monday. A dueling chant gets going as Orton sets, but Cena shoves off and hits a pair of shoulder tackles and the ProtoBomb. Cena calls for the Five Knuckle Shuffle, which he hits.Attitudfe Adjustment is blocked when Orton grabbed the ropes and pulled himself free, then dropping Cena on the top rope.
Orton saw what position Cena was in and readied for the punt, but Cena moved. The STF was blocked and Orotn rolled out. Cena went right after him, but his whip was reversed by Orton, sending John into the steps. Orton grabbed the dislodged top half of them and readied a shot, which he hit square on the noggin'. Orton placed Cena onto the bottom half of the steps, and looked to stomped on Cena's head. Orton asked the ref, but Cena eventually said no. Orton stomped him again, but again after a few seconds, Cena said no. Orton's face went mental, as he rolled Cena back in the ring and looked under it for some help. He pulled out a small bag containing some handcuffs. Orton put the key around his neck. Orton attached the cuffs to Cena and then the top rope. Orton played with the keyas Cena got back on his feet. Orton began to pick his spots, with stomps and knee drops. Cena again refused to quit.
Orton grabbed the microphone and smacked Cena in the head with it. He then took the cuff off the top rope, attaching the other end to Cena's other wrist. Orton then hung Cena up by his arms around a ringpost. Orton again picked his spots with punches to the chest, kidneys and head. Orotn doused Cena with water so he didn't pass out, and when the ref asked Cena if he quit, he spat some of the water in Randy's face. Randy grabbed a couple of the spare Singapore canes, going buckwild on Cena's chest and ribs. He then hit a headshot. Orton could not believe Cena had the temerity not to quit. However, as Randy choked Cena, Cena hit a low blow! NASTY welts on Cena's ribs. However, he managed to free himself from the ringpost. Cena staggered over to Orton, but Orton had a chair handy for a swing, smacking Cena. Orton undid one of Cena's wrists again, this time cuffing Cena to the bottom turnbuckle.
Orton wound up and hit a free shot to the back, but Cena again refused to quit. Orton was positively apopletic, even drooling a little in madness. Orton went for a killshot to Cena's head, but Cena moved and gave him a backdrop. Cena was then able to rip the key off Randy's neck! Cena then cuffed himself to Orton! Orton tried to get away, but Cena weren't for moving!
Cena went to work on Orton, bashing him off the announce desks before heading back into the ring. Back suplex was followed by blows. Cena drove knees into Orton's back. Cena got Orton up for the Attitude Adjustment, but Orton blocked and snapped off an RKO! However, Orton couldn't find the key. Orton saw it in the corner, but they were some distance away. Orton tried to pull them both over, but Cena awoke and pulled back. This drew another dueling chant before Cena locked in a variation of the STF using the chain of the cuffs! ORTON QUIT!
WINNER & NEW WWE CHAMPION: JOHN CENA!
That was a damn fine match with an AWESOME story.
After some replays, Cena got on the mic and reiterated that he did not quit. And to think despite a Singapore Cane match tonight, Cena got the worst end of some cane whackings.
Hoo boy, 33 minutes to the top of the hour. That should mean there's only 25 minutes of PPV time left, at most, unles they're running close to the hour tonight. Probably could have done with half of Ziggler's schtick in that bit. That's have said a good chunk of time right there.
After Orton slowly left, we followed Cena as he slowly made his way up the ramp, slapping hands with the fans.
Arkham Asylum promo. AWESOME game. If only I could beat some of the Challenge Rooms. And yes, playing as The Joker in that bit is awesome. Sorry XBoxer's...PS3 only, another reason why it rules.
Grisham & JR were joined again as they talked about our main event. I think at this point, we could do with less talking and more doing. That said, let's take in a hype video...
At this point, after Taker's entrance, there's only going to be a few minutes left...
CM Punk vs. The Undertaker in a "OK then...book your way out of that one..." Submission match for the World Heavyweight Title
I wonder when was the last time a WWE PPV ended in a stright Submission match. Also, anyone conspirists out there will note that Justin Roberts did make note of there being no countout or DQ's here either. Punk headed out first, allowing them to pimp Hell In A Cell, where "all matches deemed to be main events" will be in the cell. Shall we book the DX vs. Legacy rubber match now? As it goes, Taker took his sweet time in even starting to come out to the ring. But he did eventually. Seriously, would the use of a zimmer-frame help him get down the aisle faster? Justin Roberts gave it the Main Event Introductions, and the bell rang at 20 minutes to the hour by my clock. This one is gonna be quick...
The bell rang and Punk ducked right out to waste time. Is he planning on retaining by "running out of TV time"? Punk tired a couple of kicks, but they missed. Taker charged in though and Punk moved, allowing him to get some shots in. However, Taker switched and dumped Punk out. However, coming back in, Punk cut him off, although he was hit with a clothesline. Taker took Punk into the corner to work him over, the ribs specifically. Taker dumped Punk out of the ring again, but Punk caught Taker with a couple of shots. Taker reeled back though and came back with a fist of his own. Punk tried to post Taker, but Taker blocked and elbowed him. Taker hit a knee and then a boot to the head. Undertaker whipped Punk hard into the guardrail, but Punk avoided his charge, leaving Taker to crotch himself on the wall. Punk hit a running knee to the head while he had the chance. Punk got hold of a chair and hit a couple of shots, the second of which to the head.
Taker rolled back in the ring, so Punk followed, hitting the high knee in the corner. The bulldog was blocked though and Taker wrung the arm, working the shoulder joint of Punk. This saw Taker head up for Old School, but Punk crotched him on the top turnbuckle.Taker came back and blocked a superplex. However, Punk was able to hit a jumping kick to Taker's head before hitting the superplex at the second time of asking.
Both slowly got back up, with Punk firing in kicks, before Taker came back with fists, engaging in a wacky slugfest. Taker won and whipped Punk into the corner, hitting a clothesline. Snake Eyes were followed by the big boot and leg drop. Taker instinctively went for a cover but caught himself, so set fo a chokeslam. Punk hit a roundhouse to he head though to block it.
Punk stood over Taker when Taker popped him into Hell's Gate. Punk taps!
WINNER & NEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: THE UNDERTAKER!
Wow. I honestly didn't think they would have Taker go over clean. That doesn't help Punk at all after all the EXCELLENT work he did with Jeff Hardy. I'll reserve judgement until after Hell In A Cell...
BUT WAIT! Here comes Teddy Long!
He regretted to inform us that Undertaker's submission was banned by Vicki Guerrero, and so the match will continue!
Punk tried a sneak attack, but Taker got the upperhand. He went for the Last Ride, but Punk slipped out and downed Taker. Punk locked in the Anaconda Vice and MILLISECONDS afterwards, the bell rang! Scott Armstrong screwed Undertaker!
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: CM PUNK!!!
Armstrong headed for the hills, as did Punk who celebrated on the stage while Teddy stood the stoically. It has to be said, Teddy did say he'd have something to impress McMahon. However, the show ends with Punk and Taker staring holes in each other.
Well, now that the match has actually ended, while I didn't see the re-start happening, I saw the screwjob coming. That said, I didn't see a regular ref doing it. I thought, thanks to some feedback from Smackdown, that it'd be Teddy himself who made the call.
The match itself was too short to be great, but was fine enough for the time it got. I highly expect we'll get better form these 2 next month.
Anyway, I'm tired as hell since it's gone 4am over here, so don't forget to check out Ladies Night on RAW tomorrow night and also my review of the Smackdown 10th Anniversary DVD which was posted eariler today!
