Well, hello and good evening to those of the Insanity!
It is I, your 4-time and current Edinburgh and 1 time Scottish Facebook Wrestling champion, Aaron Wood, here as we open up 2008 and WWE's PPV calendar for the year with Royal Rumble. Damn, seems like it's been a while since we've had a WWE PPV. Damn, can't believe I just wrote that.
Anyway, tonight see's the match that only happens once a year, and this year it features a little person. Yes, that's right, Rey Mysterio is in the "Holy hell, the challenger has NO chance, because they aren't switching the title this close to Mania" match!
Got you there, didn't I?
...
Nope? OK, moving on....tonight, we shall answer the following questions!
Is Number 27 going to pick up another win on the 27th?
Who's gonna pull a Warlord?
How crazy is Jeff Hardy going to get by the time his segment is over?
You're Matt Hardy. Your nemesis is in one match. Your brother is in another. What you gonna do?
Is JBL going to complete his proposed lynching tonight?
So, I'll be back in about half an hour as the Road To Wrestlemania gets underway, but until then, if I may beg an indulgence...
Ladies and Gentlemen, from the bedroom of Aaron Wood in Edinburgh, Scotland (by way of Madison Square Garden)...
For the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world...
LLLLLET'S GET READYYYYYYYYYYYYY TO RUMMMMMMMMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Hello once again, it's just about bell time in New York and it's just about "frantic writing" time here. Are you watching in HD, or are you so far behind with the fuzzy poor standard definition? Yeah, me too.
Anyway, let's start this train rolling... Calling at stations World Title, WWE Title and Battle Royale. ECW Station is going under maintenence...
We open with the opening to the advert with guys getting the subway...
We then see clips of various Rumble wins by the icons over the year. And Rey's win. Then it's a random montage of guys posing. Then the fight in the subway. Last man we see? HHH...
And tonight it is THE MINI ENTRANCE! YES!!! doesn't make for a spectacular entrance, but I love it. Only thing is, it's not exactly dressed like a subway... It's more like the old ECW Entrance, actually...
Ric Flair vs. MVP in a "If only this were two months later and only if Matt Hardy wasn't gonna come back and rock the house with MVP..." Career Threatening match
Cole told us of Flair's debut in 1972 as we came out. 10 minute draw, eh? Flair has the stick, and is going to grace MSG with a final promo (for MSG anyway). He says it's been an honour to wrestle in the Garden. He says people say there is no place like it and he agrees. His first match there was in 1976. And he has to say, the level of respectthey've paid him all these years has been incredible.
However, MVP decides to interrupt the proceedings, and another flaw of the entrance comes to light as MVP's pyro is WEAK!
Sign Guy is in front row (and High Def!) as Flair starts struttin'. They lock up and MVP gets the headlock and shoulder block. They lock up again and Flair is pushed back to the corner. And now, we're trying to out-taunt each other. Andother lock up, sees a hammerlock by Flair, but MVP grabs the rope. Flair starts chopping away, knocking MVP down. Shoulder knockdown by Flair is countered with a drop toe hold by Porter. MVP hits a high boot to the head and a neckbreaker for a long 1 count.
MVP mounts and punches for another nearfall. MVP snapmares Flair ovewr and put on an armbar/chinlock. Flair is up quick, but it goes to the corner where MVP pucnhes away. Whip across, but Flair blcoks the charge and hit the knee clip. Figure four is blocked. Second attempt sees a small package for a 2 count. MVP works Ric in the corner. Flair fires back. Porter stomps away. Whip across and Flair takes a back body drop. Porter radies and hits the running boot in the corner. MVP makes the cover.
1...2...3...
BUT NO! Flair had hisfoot on the rope. In the confusion, Flair rolls MVP up for 2.
Butterfly suplex for MVP scores another 2 count. Porter picks Flair up and put him up top. MVP climbs up and hits a superplex. that scores another 2 count. Porter picks Flair up and bitchslaps him. Fireman's carry, but Flair wriggles out. Flair chops away, but there's disfunction at the junction.
Back up quick, and Flair small packages Porter for a 2 count. Flair backslide scores another 2. Flair chops. MVP fires back and hit a jawbreaker off the knee. Playmaker was blocked and Flair got on the Figure Four!!! MVP TAPS!!!
WINNER - RIC FLAIR
MVP gets out the ring and bitches to Charles Robinson, leaving Ric Flair to take one last bow at Madison Square Garden (well, in all likelihood). Standing ovation, as it goes.
Indeed, in the replay, you can see Jerry Lawler surprised at Flair's sudden Figure Four...
Backstage, we see Vince & son. Well, bastard son. They talk about the luck of the Irish, and the McMahon's tradition of promoting in the building. That brings us to Hornswaggle. Vince says he can't trust ANYONE. Even Finlay. But Vince expects a win. He's a McMahon.
Finlay walks in, and Vince explains the "No Trust" idea. Finlay cottons on quick, seeing Vince means he can't be trusted, but Vince claims that Finlay can't trust the little 'un.
JR pipes up as we see various press the Rumble has gotten.
They introduce the old XFL interviewer, Mike Adamle. He's at ringside. He congratulates Ric Flair. He says he saw the first MSG match that was referred to. He hypes up the event and the crowd. He brings up Chris Jericho and JBL, and introduces a video recap.
JBL vs. Chris Jericho in a "BATTLE OF THE RETURNS!" match
Jericho is out first, and most of his pyro is at another part of the building! And oddly enough, Jericho already seems to have ditched the "codebreaker" tights. Indeed, they actually look a bit like something HBK would wear... JBL is next, and naturally, no limo... And even Jerry Lawler is pissed at that.
The ref has to hold Jericho back as JBL takes his sweet time. JBL looks like he's been working out. They lock up and Jericho puts the bigger guy in the corner. They have to break though. And JBL bides his time. Andother lock up and JBL is again backed up. Andother lock up sees JBL get between the ropes. But then he suckers Jericho and goes to work with his fists. Whip across the ring sees Jericho take JEricho down and punch away. However, JBL pulls Jericho out. Y2J gets back in quick to swing away and give JBL a couple of punts to the gut. Jericho goes for the Walkks, but JBL grabs the ropes.
Bradshaw takes a powder, but Jericho hits a baseball slide. They fight at ringside. A Jericho suplex is blocked, but JBL is shoved into the edge of the ring and then the steps. Back in the ring, Jericho gets hung up on the top rope, throat-first.
JBL picks Chris up and hit a short-arm clothesline. JBL give Fozzy-boy another one, before he chokes Jericvho using the bottom rope. Slingshot into the rope. More choking with the rope. JBL starts with haymakers in the corner. Jericho fires back and whips, but it's reversed and JBL gets in a sleeper.
Jericho hits his knees quick, as JBL wretches it in. But he does get up and clotheslines JBL down. Standing ten count. Both get up at about 6. JBL boots Jericho down. Jericho is sent through the ropes into the ringpost. Chris falls outside. Actually, Jericho is busted YyxW (probably hardway)JBL takes advantage though.
JBL works Jericho over in the corner. And Jericho is BLEEDING. the ref warns JBL, but Jericho comes back and starts to build momentum. Bulldog kinda happens (JBL didn't dive). Lionsault hits, but JBL is up quick. Cactus clothesline by Jericho sends both men out the ring. Jericho is sent into the ECW desk. JBL takes the top off, but JBL THUMPS JBL with a chair shot to the head. That's the DQ there.
WINNER BY DQ - JBL
Jericho sends JBL into the ring for another hard shot, before punches away. Jericho gets himself a cable. And JBL gets a taste of his own medicine. Jericho actually chokes JBL BIG TIME. It was almost a hanging. Put it this way, Jericho was stood on the announce desk pulling while JBL was in the ring!
May as well book a bullrope match next month...
JBL writhes in the ring as Lillian make the official announcement. He even manages to raise his hand in victory.
Ashley is wlaking backstage looking for Maria. Santino Marella answers the knock at the door. Apparently, she's preparing for a Kiss Cam. Apparently, Maria can't say no to anything or anyone. Santino says Maria is not interested in her or her booby magazine. He was funnier than I can write it...
Mania 63 days away...
THE COACH & THE COLE! are at ringside. They thank Airbourne. They pimp the World Title match, which is up next, and send it to a recap.
Edge vs. Rey Mysterio in a "Edge is gonna win...Yeah? Him and whose Army? Oh wait..." match for the World Heavyweight Title
Edge is actually the man to come out first, and suspiciously enough, the Rated Rmy are nowhere to be seen... Eventually, Vicki Guerrero & Teddy Long make their way out. And here come Hawkins and Ryder. They join Vicki at ringisde. No Chavo?
Rey, the poor schmuck that he is, comes out in what looks for all the world like a CENTURION HELMET! It's got studs on it and everything... And indeed, Justin Roberts is giving it the "main event" introductions. And it could just be me, but Rey is getting booed and Edge is getting cheered...
Edge shoves Rey into the corner and talks smack. They lock up, but Edge gets the arm wringer. Edge works the fingers of Rey. Rey kicks the leg and hit some sort of headscissors (albeit with his legs around Edge's body). All that to BOOS. Edge gets the knock down, but rey trips Edge and gets a 1 count. To BOOS. Even Cole is referring to it in not so many words.
Edge punches a couple of times and chokes at the ropes. Edge sends Rey out. Rey gets back up quick, but Edge hits a baseball slide. Ryder & Hawkins get caught beating on Rey, so Mickey Henson ejects them. rey comes back in and sets for the 619, but Edge takes a powder. Rey dives over and lands on the champ.
Back in, Rey hits the springboard seated senton for a 2 count. Rey kicks away again. Rey is sent into the corner, and Edge kicks the rope to unbalance Rey, and injure Rey's gimp knee. Rey is forced to powder out, but Edge keeps on him. And there are LOUD "Let's Go Edge" chants.
Edge stomps away on the knee of Rey, before putting on a single leg crab. Rey refuses to quit. Edge modifys the hold, but still Rey's not tapping. Rey kicks Edge off. Mysterio enziguri connects and Edge lands prime for a 619. However, when Rey went for it, he ran into a snap powerslam for a close 2 count.
Edge tries the old "Brock Lock", before going back to the modified single leg crab. Rey again kicks Edge off, but only drags himself to the corner. Edge pulls him out and takes in the cheers. Edge pulls at Rey's knee brace. However, Rey kicks back again. Wheelbarrow bulldog by Rey leaves both men laying.
Both get up and rey fires in chops. Rey whips Edge across thge ring, but Edge gets the sunset flip. However Rey rolls through and hits a low dropkick for 2. Rey is whipped into the corner. Rey downs Edge for another near fall. Rey climbs out and goes up top. However, he's too slow for Edge. Edge gets knocked to the mat and Rey hits a doublestomp for a close 2 count! Rey may have tweaked his knee there too. Headscissors sends Edge out the ring. Rey slides across and hits a DDT on the outside of the ring. Nice spot.
Back in, Rey scores a close 2 again. Rey comes off the ropes into a big boot. Well, as big as it needs to be with Rey. Edge went for the spear, but Rey ducked and hit a hurricanrana for the 619. This time it connects! Vicki gets out her chair. Mysterio hits the splash, but Vicki stops the three count!
Rey sets Edge for a 619, but Vicki threw herself infront of it. Rey comes off the ropes, but is mnet with a HUGE spear for the three count!
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION - EDGE
The Rated Rmy come out and tend to Vicki. Well, it'll be back to her neckbrace on Friday... Probably a good thing. It hides her jowels...
Backstage, we see Ric Flair coming out the shower (with a towel on). We see Ken Kennedy, who gives him the golf clap. He congratulates Naitch on his win. Kennedy says after he wins the Rumble, he's gonna have so much time on his hands, he owuld love nothing more than to...
...Be interrupted by HBK? Well his wish came true, because he was. Kennedy left. HBK mocks Kennedy by mocking himself. Flair puts over Michaels's chances of winning the Rumble. Cue Batista. Flair reminds him he's a member of the RAW brand. HHH walks in! It's De Evolution X! HHH says that tonight, the best man would win, with them all suggesting that they are all the best men. HHH hates a shill apparently...
No Way Out of Vegas...
It's JR & lawler, so I'm guessing that it's the WWE Title next. Indeed it is as we see Hardy & Orton psyche themselves up.
Well, hang on, because Santino wasn't lying. We ar egtting a Kiss Cam skit LIVE ON PPV! BOO THIS, NEW YORK! BOO THIS!
Thankfully, it ends quick. Only for Ashley's music to kick in...IT GETS WORSE!
Ashley gets the stick...IT ONLY GETS WORSE! Ashley says she got the call from Hugh Hefner and he wanted to offer to pose for Playboy. Before Maria can answer, Santino Marella comes out with someone under a sheet.
Marella tells ashley once again that the answer is no. No-one wants to see Maria with no clothes on. He rags on New York, and it's sports teams. I can't do it justice. He's brilliant. He rags on the Giants. Ashley stops them from leaving. The crowd chant for the Giants. Ashley says it's not Santino's decision to make. She wants Maria's answer. She surveys the crowd. Santino says the crowd are like sheep and would cheer for hepititis. However, it was time for Santino to reveal his special friend.
Since people like boobies...
BIG DICK JOHNSON IN A PATS JERSEY!
Ashley slaps the crap out of him. With the chiuckens he was holding... And I was hoping ofr Beth Phoenix...
Wrestlemania advert. Kelly Kelly is a lifeguard. A fat ugly guy decides to get into trouble. Kelly does Pamela Anderson well. We see her give CPR, but Mae Young jumps in and starts macking on him. Funny as hell.
Newbie Mike pimps the WWE Title, with Jeff Harvey...Sorry, Hardy. We send it to a recap video. A long one. It's Orton's whole career followed by the Hardy career retrospective.
Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy in a "Could it actually happen?" match for the WWE Title
Hardy makes his way out first and slaps hands with everyone that wants to. Last tie I remember Jeff in MSG was the tables match against Three Minute Warning, where he fell off the guardrail and then Rico had to audibly yell to him to hurry up and into position. How far he's come... Orton SLOWLY follows. Lillian gives us another set of "Main Event" intros. Well, at least this crowd like the challenger and hate the champ...
The bell is rung and they circle each other. They lock up and they take it around the ring. Mike Chioda is forced to break it up when it stalls. Hardy gets a side headlock and a takedown. 2 count on Orton. Orton rolls Hardy over for a 1 count. Orton pulls Hardy's hair, before wrapping his legs around Jeff's throat. Hardy gets an atomic drop and the double leg drop and then a low dropkick for a 2 count.
Orton knee to the gut sees him work over Hardy at the ropes. Hardy sends Orton outside and THUMPS Orton with a dropkick. Orton's neck looks broke by the way he's laying. Mike Chioda even had to check he was OK. When Orton got back up, Hardy dived over onto him. Orton decides it's not worth and grabs his belt, but Hardy gets out and fires in a couple of shots. Hardy gets the better of it and rolls Orton back in. Jeff goes to srpingboard in, but Orton dropkicks him down to the floor.
On the outside, Orton gives Hardy a suplex. Hardy is rolled back in and Orton scores a quick 2 count. Orton stomps the feet of Hardy. Orton then stomps the arms. Orton puts on a blatant choke and then hits a couple of knee drops for a 2 count. Orton taunts the crowd before clubbing Hardy some more. However Hardy begins to punch back. He whips Orton off the ropes and then sends him out Rumble-style. How appropriate. Hardy hits the apron and hits a flying clothesline.
Back in the ring, Hardy scores a 2 count. Hardy whips Orton into the corner, but Randall ducks the charge, and Hardy dives into ring post. Orton scores a deuce off that. Chinlock with bodyscissors by Orton. Hardy begins to waken up and then elbows his way out of it. However, he runs into a powerslam for a 2 count. Back to the chinlock.
Again, Hardy fights back. Hardy hit hits twisting clothesline out of nowhere, leaving both men down. Orotn is up first, and quikc, Hardy counters a punch and hits a knockdown. Orton is sent into the corner, before hitting the Whisper In The Wind for a CLOSE 2 count.
Mule kick by Hardy set Orton up for the dropkick oin the corner. Hardy goes up top for the Swanton. However, Orton sensed it coming and ducked out to the apron. Hardy hits a dropkick to Orotn, sending him out. Hardy climbs up the other side. He hits a moonsault onto Orton!
He didn't get all of it, but enough. they got back in and Hardy called for a Twist Of Fate, as Orton pulled himself up. However, it was blocked and the RKO out of NOWHERE for the three count!!!
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION - RANDY ORTON
Orton leaves, as Hardy gets the "respect pop", which the New Yorkers give him.
AT LAST! We get us some Extreme! Joey & Tazz hype up the upcoming match. Please tell me those two alone are calling it... Either way, they send it to the "By the numbers" video.
The Royal Rumble match...no quips necessary...
