The Ratings Are In: Lucha Libre AAA Heroes Del Ring Video Game Review

By RDLee Oct 21, 2010 - 4:50 PM print

What's up guys, RDLee here on ClubWWI dot com.... Oh wait that's JG's intro. I forgot that I don't have one. Damn. Now before you run away or click off the site please allow me to start over and try again. Pretty please with cheese?

Hey folks, what's cracking? I thought I would drop by and offer my review of the new Lucha Libre AAA game that just released last week on Xbox 360 and PS3. I had the chance to play the game in it's entirety already (yes, I have a life so don't assume I don't. lol) and I have to say I enjoyed playing this game for the most part but already realize I am fighting a losing battle by giving this game any credit at all considering most people even bitch and complain about even the best wrestling titles out there like Smackdown v.s. Raw. We need to wake up and realize that not every wrestling game ever made should be compared to No Mercy on the Nintendo 64. So just consider this an honest review from a guy who has appreciation for every wrestling game he's ever played except Rumble Roses. Without any further adu, here we go.

- - -

Graphics - Lucha Libre looks strikingly simular to the TNA Impact game. The characters look a little more cartoony than TNA but are still very good looking. The art style seems to be a little on the dark side as far as the overall color scheme but it makes for an interesting design. There are a few technical hiccups when hitting moves such as missing the mark and it still registering the hit but it's nothing that should keep you from playing. While some of the characters like Marco Corleone (the former Mark Jindrak) and Jack Evans don't look 100% accurate in the face I still think the graphics are more of a highlight for this game than most would give it credit for. Only minor complaints from me and I would rate them a solid 4 out of 5.

Sound - This is one aspect of the game that will either impress you or make you sick. The game features both English commentary and Spanish commentary as chosen by you via the options menu. I tried both and actually preferred the Spanish commentary since AAA is broadcasted in this format in all of their media releases. The English is horrid with Konnan and someone else basically repeating the same stuff over and over again. You think Smackdown is bad, wait until you hear this games chatter minus all the background info you would expect about the wrestlers in the ring. Some of the moves have the appropriate noise when getting slammed to the mat but I think the running sound is atrocious. I can't really think of anything else to add here but will basically say that in my opinion the sound really hurts the game even for people like me that aren't normally picky. I have to score the sound a 2 out of 5.

Controls - The controls are fine. They are much easier than Impact but then again I didn't have trouble with TNA's game like most of you amatuers did. (Here's looking at you Mike Johns! lol) Most moves are initiated by the press of one button and the submissions require a button mashing mini game that is easy as hell to pick up on. Once you become comfortable with the button mapping and start to get a hang of it the game opens up and becomes enjoyable. One of the downfalls is that there aren't lot of moves to master which leaves a few buttons open to do nothing with. All in all I consider this to be a pick up and play type arcade style wrestling game. The ease of doing all the moves will certainly appeal to most casual gamers and be absorbed like a sponge almost immediately by hardcore gamers so there isn't much to complain about in this catagory. I would give the controls a 3.5 out of 5.

Fun Factor - This is where the hard part comes in. I enjoyed this game and beat both storymodes in only a couple of hours. The game is fun. Simple as that. Sure being compared to games like Smackdown v.s. Raw it will look like totally garbage but the trick is to lower your standards and simply enjoy it for what it is. The cast of characters and the wacky moves should keep your attention for a few days at most if you play it heavily. The lifespan is what hurts it most because like I mentioned I already beat the storymodes in short order. Beyond that there are online modes (which you won't find anyone to play with already for some reason) there is a 8 man tournament mode and the normal exhibition stuff such as 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 ways and 4 ways. I seem to think this game is meant to be a rental for single player gamers and a buy for folks that have friends or family to play locally with on the same console. If your a wrestling fan I suggest you check it out one way or another and make your own opinion. I enjoyed it for a few days but doubt I will go back and play it anytime soon once I get SvR 2011. My rating for fun factor would be a 3.5 out of 5.

Overall - This game is a 3 out of 5 to me. It's not the greatest wrestling game out there for obvious reasons but it is still fun and worth a try. It's a small step up from the TNA Impact game but then again I enjoyed that too because I'm not a stuck up prick like most of you out there are (<------- Joke) Like I said before and will say again in the future. Just make your own opinions on stuff and don't listen to everyone else since they normally don't know what they are talking about. I do so rest assured that this game is worth at least the price of a rental just so you can play as La Parka and do his crazy dance moves. I would love to get your feedback below AFTER you've played the game and not before. I think anyone that comments negatively on something they haven't played first doesn't deserve an opinion. I dropped some truth bombs yo!

That's it for my review of Lucha Libra AAA Heroes Del Ring. Leave your questions or comments below. Also, I'll have my review for EA: MMA up sometime soon so keep checking back. Until then, thanks again for reading and Stay Classy!
