8/11 WWE Raw: Mallory's Ongoing Coverage of the Show
By Mallory Mahling
Welcome to WWI's ongoing coverage of Monday Night Raw. This week Raw is live from the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia.
* * * The show opened with a recap of the rocky road Batista and John Cena took to capture the Tag Team Titles last week. As Michael Cole and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcomed viewers to the show, Cena made his way to the ring. Cena said General Manager Mike Adamle was all about hype and had consulted with Cena about what they could do to pump things up. Cena told him they needed to do nothing more than put Cena and Batista in the ring together. Cena explained that tonight they would have a Tag Title rematch. But at SummerSlam, they would have a match that was six years in the making to decide which of them was better. That question would be answered Sunday. Batista said he'd been watching Cena, too, because Cena had never changed who he was and Batista respected that; however, he wouldn't get caught dead doing some of the things Cena does (and then mocked some of his goofier mannerisms). But when all is said and done, Batista will be the answer to the question as to who is better. Cena extended his hand in sportsmanship and they shook. And left it at that. They may beat each other senseless Sunday night, but tonight they were gentlemen. (Commercial break) WWE had won CINE awards for the Tribute to the Troops show and for WrestleMania. (1) KellyKelly vs. The Bethazon (Beth Phoenix & Santino). KellyKelly was wearing some of that "family-friendly" wrestling garb. KellyKelly was holding her own for a while with the Bethazon, but she couldn't hold on long enough to win. After the match, Santino suggested sending a message to Kofi Kingston and Mickie James. Kofi and Mickie came running down and Santino insisted he wanted a match. Kofi accepted. Mickie, the hometown girl, was actually the one Santino wanted to wrestle. She accepted, even after Santino kept talking and putting his big foot in his mouth. (Commercial break) (2) Santino Marella vs. Mickie James. During the break Santino had been rude to Mickie's parents in the audience. Mickie was getting the better of Santino, but thanks to some interference by Beth, Santino grabbed a handful of tights and made the winning pin. Santino was so happy he jumped right into Beth's arms. She pushed him off. Then he pursed his lips and smooched like a fish, but all he kissed was air as Beth ignored him. Not in a mean way, just a can't-be-bothered way. GM Adamle had a large picture of Ronald Wilson Reagan in his office rather than the customary 8x10 glossy of Vincent K. McMahon. Kane walked into the office and the GM made another Adamle Original match for tonight--Kane vs. Chris Jericho. Then Adamle told Kane that tonight he would have to hand over the burlap bag so little kids wouldn't begin to emulate him and scare their playmates. Kane told the GM he was making a huge mistake. (Commercial break) Cody Rhodes, who is becoming an excellent heel, wanted to take back the Tag Team Titles. Ted DiBiase the Younger compared the Priceless Pair to the legends in the making. They were all about earning respect tonight. (Commercial break) (3) Tag Match: Shad & JTG--Cryme Tyme, vs. Rory & Robby--The Highlanders. You could see the end of this one coming a mile away. Can you say semi-squash? Cryme and Tyme happily hip-hopped their way up the ramp as winners. (Commercial break) Breaking news…Randy Orton, who is off recuperating from an injury, was involved in a motorcycle accident last night. Check out WWE.com for further updates. Meanwhile, JBL had arranged for a match with CM Punk tonight that Punk could not possibly win. Hmm… A table was set up in the ring with a chair on either side of it and a covered object in the middle. The two started to jaw at each other, with JBL calling Punk "Cinderella" and Punk telling JBL that he was living his dream. The match tonight was to be a drinking contest, with JBL pouring a glass of whiskey for someone whose gimmick is to not let liquor touch his lips. JBL said he only had to take one drink, but he wasn't making much of a case for Punk to take that drink. There was no big prize to dangle at the bottom of the glass. Punk was not buying into his stupid match, anyway, and refused to be bullied. JBL had the tables turned on him when Punk tossed the whiskey into JBL's eyes and punked him out. Pun intended. (Commercial break) (4) Chris Jericho (w/Lance Cade) vs. Kane. Kane placed his burlap bag lovingly in the corner before the match started. Back and forth it went, with each getting the upper hand at times. But it was also a bit sloppy. Nonetheless, GM Adamle and a squad of rent-a-cops came down to ringside and Kane stopped to pick up his burlap bag. Jericho used the distraction to go for the Code Breaker, made the winning pin, and left Kane alone with his baggie. Adamle, the ringside shrink, said he knew what was in Kane's bag. The "he" was Kane--the monster inside him. As Adamle continued to talk, the crowd lapsed into a "what" chant. Adamle said that Kane could exorcise his demons and lead a normal life and he asked Kane to give him the bag. Ronald Reagan had told Gorbachev to "Take down the wall," said Adamle. "Hand me that bag," he said putting his own twist on the quote. The conflicted Kane told Adamle there was a mask in the bag and the man who wore it has been scarred and damaged beyond all human recognition. The problem was, continued Kane, it was not his mask. He reached in and pulled out Rey Mysterio's mask. MWAHAHAHAHAH, came Kane's maniacal laugh. (Commercial break) (5) Jamie Noble vs. King William of Regal. Regal stormed out to the ring and lit into Noble, ultimately pinning him. Was Leyla watching? Next time WWE makes a movie, they should consider Edge for a starring role. He was quite the convincing villain in the Smackdown mini-movie last Friday with Chavo and Vickie. (Commercial break) (6) Tag Team Championship Match: John Cena & Batista vs. Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase the Younger. The match was ready to start, but Cena and Batista could not agree on who would start. While they quibbled, Rhodes and DiBiase capitalized. Then Cena managed to flatten Rhodes as the show went to break. Cena, who had been voted Prom King…err…most popular…by the viewers in a poll earlier in the evening, rubbed it in as he toyed with Rhodes. (Commercial break) Batista tagged in and pummeled DiBiase to prove a point. Spinbuster. Taunting. Then it was time for the Batista Bomb, but that didn't happen thanks to Cena. Later, Batista slapped Cena across the face to make the tag, much as Cena had done to him last week. As Batista and Cena behaved like children, the younger stars had the advantage DiBiase quickly rolled up Cena for the pin to recapture their tag titles. An angry Batista wanted Cena back in the ring. He was about to oblige, but the GM sent his security goons out to break it up. In spite of the security Batista and Cena tore into each other. Who will prevail? If you want to know, order the pay-per-view Sunday, of course. One other item of note, General Manager Adamle ended the show at the 11:00 p.m. on the dot. I like this guy!
