9/08 WWE Raw: Mallory's Ongoing Coverage of the Show

...

Welcome to WWI's ongoing coverage of Monday Night Raw. This week Raw was live from the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This was the first Raw from Fort Wayne in three years.

Lillian Garcia was in the ring as the show came on the air. She introduced the new World Champion, Chris Jericho, who got a smattering of boos. That didn't matter to Jericho; he walked out to some new music with a smile plastered on his face and the title belt draped over his shoulder.

In addition to winning the title last night, Jericho had also had one heck of a match with Shawn Michaels. Jericho peeled off his shirt to show the bruises HBK had inflicted on him. Ouch!

As Jericho continued to talk, the "you sucks" grew louder. No matter. Jericho was still grinning from ear to ear as he displayed the title belt.

But how did Jericho get into the Scramble match, you might be wondering? Randy Orton had kicked CM Punk in the head last night before the Scramble match started, and General Manager Mike Adamle had offered Punk's spot to Jericho.

GM Adamle came out to explain that Punk had suffered a concussion and was not medically cleared to wrestle. Adamle said that Punk was not there tonight, but next week, Punk would be given another shot at the title. The match would take place in a 15-foot high steel cage to preclude any interference.

That was fine with Jericho and he said he was going to take his belt and leave. But wait…the GM had something else diabolical in mind. Tonight, it would be Jericho vs. Batista. Jericho's smile turned into a frown.

Candice Michelle came out and took a seat near the announcers. She will face the winner of the next match at No Mercy.

(1) Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix.

The Bethazon may be powerful, but tonight so was Mickie. It was a good match, but was clearly leading to the post-match staredown between the Bethazon and Candice Michelle in anticipation of their match at No Mercy.

Jamie Noble had arranged for Gillian to sing a song to Leyla but didn't realize what a screech owl Gillian can be. Leyla forgave Jamie and he promised to take her to the Olive Garden for a big time after the show.

(Commercial break)

(2) Jamie Noble (w/Leyla) vs. King William Regal.

Jamie made sure Leyla had a nice seat at ringside, then waited for his opponent, Regal. Once the match started, Regal was handing Noble his backside. Was Leyla concerned for Noble? Or impressed by Regal's stunning moves? Near fall by Noble. Then Noble launched himself into the corner and Regal used the move to his advantage and pinned Noble for the 1-2-3.

Regal offered his arm to Leyla and they left together. Regal looked quite pleased with himself and Leyla looked conflicted. Poor Jamie looked broken-hearted. Very well played.

(Commercial break)

(3) John Bradshaw Layfield vs. Charlie Haas.

JBL thought sure he'd win the Scramble last night. Well, we all want something.

CHL (Charlie Haas Layfield) was locked in the trunk of the limo and was dressed just like JBL right down to the 10-gallon hat. The audience started a "CHL" chant and JBL complained that CHL was mocking him as he peddled JBL's energy drink. Hilarious segment.

The bell rang for the match to start, but JBL walked up the ramp in a huff. A jubilant CHL won the match by countout.

(Commercial break)

JBL was wandering down the hallways backstage, and ran into Batista, who was chuckling about Haas's Mamajuanna.com pitches. Batista reminded a grumbling JBL that CHL had actually won his match tonight.

Todd Grisham asked Rey Mysterio about his unfortunate encounter with Kane. Rey looked into the camera and told Kane that he was strong and his spirit was still alive. He was nobody's victim. Take that, Big Red.

(4) The Miz & John Morrison of ECW vs. Rey Mysterio & Evan Bourne.

(Commercial break)

Teddy Long and Tiffany of ECW were in GM Adamle 's office watching Raw on a monitor.

Bourne and Mysterio teamed up to pin Morrison for the win with a 619 and a beautiful shooting star press.

Then Kane appeared on the TitanTron and spoiled Rey's celebration. Kane offered a hint to Rey-Rey about their match next week, and it was Kane's old mask. What's that meant to mean? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Orton was headed toward the ring.

(Commercial break)

Last night at the PPV, Orton and his team of second-generation wrestlers had made sure that CM Punk would not be able to participate in the Scramble match.

Orton got into the ring and the mic didn't work. Awww.

The mic started working and Orton began boasting about himself. Blah, blah, blah. He was convinced that CM Punk was a fluke and didn't deserve to be in the Scramble match. He'd destroyed him all by himself.

Cody Rhodes, Ted DeBiase the Younger, and Afa Jr./Manu strolled out and questioned Orton's memory. Cody said that if they hadn't set up the shot, Orton would not have been able to punt Punk's head.

Orton had heard enough and slapped Teddy across the face. Orton then got out of harm's way as the three young guys seethed.

(Commercial break)

(5) Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase & Manu vs. Cryme & Tyme & Kofi Kingston.

Manu made the winning pin, but all six had looked impressive.

(Commercial break)

(6) Santino Marella (w/the Bethazon) vs. Snitsky.

Santino pulled out his Intercontinental Championship Honk-a-Meter and said he was already 19 times better than The Mountie. Somehow, Santino was able to pin Snitsky and added another honk to his total.

Adamle was trying to explain about CM Punk to Kelly Kelly. Jericho walked in and said it was unfair for him to have to face Batista tonight after two brutal matches last night. An unsympathetic Adamle said that it would be up to Jericho pull off a main event match tonight.

(Commercial break)

(7) Chris Jericho (w/Lance Cade) vs. Batista.

Batista came out smiling, thinking that Jericho's weakened condition would benefit him. Batista tossed Jericho from pilar to post. Then Adamle came out and stopped the match. He said he was learning on the job and had misdiagnosed Jericho's condition. Instead, Adamle would make the next match a handicap tag match.

(7½) Batista vs. JBL & Jericho.

The match had started during the break. Distraction from Cade on the apron. Clothesline from Hell by JBL and Jericho went on to make the winning pin. That was followed by a beat down on Batista by Cade and JBL, but Batista reached deep down for some spears to send a message to the champion.

Where was Jericho while all this was going on? He was at the top of the ramp smiling and cuddling his title belt.
