August 18 WWE Raw: Mallory's Ongoing Coverage of the Show

...

Welcome to WWI's ongoing coverage of Monday Night Raw. This week Raw was live from the sold-out Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

* * *

Michael Cole and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcomed viewers to the show as Chris Jericho made his way to the ring. Jericho was wearing a suit and tie and looked subdued as the crowd booed him. Jericho said he did not intend to apologize for last night's actions. If Rebecca Michaels got punched in the chops at SummerSlam, it was her own fault. (Jericho was the most hated person in the building at that moment.)

(Watching what led up to the punch heard round the world, it was fine drama. Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho have the talent to pull off this storyline and make it special.)

Jericho said HBK had it coming, although the crowd was drowning him out. With that, he climbed out of the ring and walked up the ramp and went backstage.

Next Monday night, a "special" Raw will be on SciFi. Translated, that means either dogs or tennis will be taking their spot on the USA Network.

(1) Batista vs. Paul Birchill.

Batista gave Birchill the rag-doll treatment, finally giving him a Batista Bomb and making the winning pin.

Batista had a big smile on his face as he walked up the ramp.

General Manager Mike Adamle introduced the newest member of Raw, Primo Colon, younger brother of former Raw superstar, Carlito. (With the short haircut, it could easily have been a repackaged Carlito.) Suddenly, and rudely, Adamle left Primo standing there in mid-sentence and ran off to catch up with John Cena, who blew him off. Cena, in turn, ran off to catch up with Batista, and the two warily discussed their match last night. Cena graciously said the best man had won.

Gillian had a microphone and burst into song. Or something.

(2) Kelly Kelly & Mickie James vs. Gillian Hall & Katie Lea.

The match was better than your average bear. Mickie pinned Katie for the win.

(Commercial break)

Tonight Cena will be in a handicap match with the Tag Team Champs.

JBL arrived in his refurbished limo and was in a snit because he had not defeated CM Punk last night.

Jamie Noble made his entrance next. Uh oh. JBL is bad enough when he's in a good mood.

(3) JBL vs. Jamie Noble.

Jamie got pummeled, jobber-style. JBL went for the pin but the ref stopped the match because Noble couldn't defend himself. Nonetheless, JBL was declared the winner.

A big announcement from Shane and Steph is coming up next. You've been warned.

(Commercial break)

Some of the Chicago Cubs were in the front row pretending to punch each other.

GM Mike Adamle came out to announce that Chicago's very own CM Punk would be in action later tonight.

Moving right along, at Unforgiven, a new championship concept would be presented--Championship Scramble. Sort of sounds like a new breakfast offering at Mickie D's. Five superstars would compete in a 20-minute match. What? The superstar who makes a pin will be the champion. What? And so on and so forth. What? At the end of the 20 minutes, whoever is champion will remain champ. Sort of like musical chairs. What? Participants will be CM Punk, Kane, John Bradshaw Layfield, Batista, John Cena.

(4) John Cena vs. Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes.

As the entrances were being made, Cryme Tyme made a quick trip to the ring and snatched the title belts. They headed to the back as Cena began his entrance.

(Commercial break)

It wasn't long until the match turned into a two-on-one clubbering. Cena, who couldn't get the time of day from the crowd earlier, was a favorite in this match. Cena looked like he was all done, but he was just playing possum. He reached way down deep and won the match by submitting Rhodes. Bad night for the precious pair.

Up next will be HBK's comments on Jericho's actions at SummerSlam.

(Commercial break)

Harley Race was shown in the front row.

The announcers were selling the punch Rebecca Michaels took as a broken jaw. As the family left the building last night, Cole had ambushed them for a few words. At first he was hesitant, but HBK finally said all he wanted to do was go home and comfort his wife and his kids. And then . . . What HBK had in mind was left unsaid. HBK was feeling guilty that Rebecca had taken a punch because of him.

Todd Grisham introduced CM Punk. Punk said Jericho had done something very low last night. In Chicago, they know how to deal with jerks like that--Chicago-style.

Team Glammarella came out next. Santino had won the IC title last night and the Bethazon had won the Women's title in one of Adamle's original odd-ball matches.

Up next, WWI's very own D-Lo Brown.

(Commercial break)

(5) Santino Marella vs. D-Lo Brown.

Before the match could start, Kofi Kingston came out to join the commentary team.

For most of the match, Santino was getting his behind handed to him. D-Lo was going to finish him off when Beth Phoenix stood in front of Santino with her arms crossed. D-Lo told her to get to stepping, so she slapped him. Meanwhile, Kofi did a little interfering, too. But all that mattered to Santino was that he went home with the IC title belt.

(Commercial break)

Kane came out to discuss Rey Mysterio's mask that had been in his burlap bag. He said thinking of it comforted him and even put a smile on his face. Then Kane reminded the audience that Rey hasn't been seen for six weeks. Kane had never liked him, nor does he like people who do. Rey is still alive, explained Kane, but his spirit is broken. Is he alive? Or is he dead? Ver-r-r-r-y creepy.

Batista came out and headed to the ring with a purpose.

(6) Batista vs. Kane.

Batista came out to avenge his friend Rey, but Kane left Batista laying.

(Commercial break)

Main event time.

(7) CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho (w/Lance Cade).

CM Punk's entrance in his hometown was phenomenal. Not only did the roof blow off the building as he made his way down the ramp, but they were loud and proud throughout the match..

Jericho seemed a bit taken aback.

(Commercial break)

Back from the break and Jericho was in control with an abdominal stretch on Punk. As Jericho moved in for the finish, Punk gave him a kick to the head. Near fall for Jericho. Then Jericho put Punk in the Walls of Jericho. Punk reached the ropes to break the hold. Bulldog off the second rope by Punk. Code Breaker by Jericho when Punk turned his back to deal with Cade's interference. Jericho may have won the match, the Punk had their hearts. Best match of the evening.

Once again, the show ended precisely on time. Adamle may have a few faults, but his timing is impeccable.
